The departure cards used to ask if leaving temporary or permanent, not sure why anyone would have answered permanently as that would have flagged you (as a non resident) to the tax office for sure.
Indeed. It's pretty obvious from when there is a disaster in some part of the world and the government is able to say virtually instantly how many Australians are currently in that country.

And someone suggested that "they" ( ATO/Pension Office) will only know you are outside Australia " if you tell them". No, " they" know exactly where you are, and how long you are out of the country. Sure, they scrapped the immigration forms but the system still monitors your every movement, courtesy of the API system ( with which all airlines abide).

Yes thats right about the house, it used to be one of the questions the ATO calculator asked.
The reality is that if one owns a house/condo in Thailand as well as one in Australia, then the pension is virtually impossible.
I'm a self-funded retiree ( refugee?) and get a fat Zero from Canberra. That's ok, I still dabble in a bit of work. I wouldn't care much ( and don't care a lot) were it not for the low-life, scum-bag, rotten to the core politicians whose snouts to the trough approach to their own benefits is both bipartisan and universally acknowledged. Vile rotters one and all.

It would be a pity if innocents get caught up in this contemplated change: it is intended to curb Chinese investment in real estate, specifically Sydney and Melbourne. Investors have been buying , leaving the properties vacant and then selling a year or two later for a 20% gain.( not small change on properties worth 1-2 million or more, although stamp duty is 70,000 or more on the purchase price and agent's commission at least 30,000 on the sale).

Yes, I got it from Flyertalk. I saw NYC for $1028. Oct/nov but the fares will go really quickly.
Qatar is now cancelling these tickets, claiming they are "mistake" fares. Pity.

Got any sample dates? I checked and see $2600 as the cheapest business class option to LAX from SGN. Added, looking at that flyertalk thread I might have just missed it.

We just flew them and it's a nice airline. 24 hours in Doha could be interesting!
Yes, agree, nice airline. I used them a lot ex Cairo but that has stopped because of the ban. I think I was on the last Qatar flight into Cairo the day relations were cut.
These flights book in "R" class ( a business restricted) but still earn the full whack on most One World programs .
Ive never seen fares this cheap.

Super cheap deals on Qatar now ex HCMC, including business fares to the US for around $1000 return. Also cheap flights to J'Burg business (rarely seen and someone was asking about it). Valid until Dec, wide availability, unheard of cheap...won't last long. Google flights search will show the options.
I'm booked up already and a bit pissed that this has come without warning. But good if you can go and don't mind 24 hours in Doha ( and departing from, returning toHCMC).
Bargain.

Thanks for the replies. I have brought in smaller rugs before as suggested above, without difficulty. Unfortunately this one is 5.3x4.2 metres, weights about 40 kg ( thick wool ) , so slipping through unnoticed is not going to work.
yes, I'll play up the fact that it's old, but has sentimental value rather than financial and try to minimise the damage. I wouldn't mind a couple of thousand Baht.

I want to bring a rug through customs. It's Chinese, not antique but maybe 50 or 60 years old. I bought it about 25 years ago. How does value get assessed? Purchase price was somewhere around 20-25,000 Baht equivalent ( forget exactly), value now a bit more, could be 40-50. Do I pay duty on assessed value over 10,000? At what rate? Will I get harassed and hassled, shaken-down?

Reminds me a little of the Frank E Evans, US destroyer sunk in a collision with HMAS Melbourne, Australian Aircraft Carrier, in the South China Sea or Gulf of Tonkin back in the late 60s. 70 or 80 died in that and it had been preceded by a similar collision with an Australian destroyer, The Voyager, in which more than 80 died.

Qatar continues to offer decent business fares from a number of European cities TO Bangkok ( not so much from). The cheapest I have seen is Venice ( VCE) , just over 50,000.
Obviously Cairo, the best deal, is dead for now. Fortunately my one ticket was for the last flight from Doha to Cairo , last week.
-
It looks as though Qatar is trying to better manage ( from their perspective) these frequent sales, by restricting the ticket validity/travel dates to about a 6 week period. Previously they offered long validity/return options( 6 months or more).
Consequently the current deal ( book by May 22) requires travel to be completed by the end of June.

Wow, this is all great info. I am looking for a site or airline with good business deal to Brasil and/or to Capetown and to sites where I can find business flights at discounts in general. Any info much appreciated. Regards. MS>
It's uncommon to see anything cheap to either: occasionally Ethiopian has some cheapish deals to South Africa but it's a long, long route and stopover. Brazil: never seen anything cheap ex BKK....but there is a reasonably cheap fare around ex Cairo ( BA, AA), but of course you have to get to Cairo to take it.

Qatar has some pretty good deals on business class - travel must be completed by 6/20 for full discount, return flights after 6/20 look to be normal fares
sample fare of 66000 RT BKK - BCN or BKK - TXL, many more available
book by 5/22
This is a good one if anyone needs to be in Vienna or close by. RTN Business for under 55,000 ( does require an overnight in Doha and limited dates, late May/early June). Qatar, nice airline, great fare.

Almond milk is an alternative: much lower carb/sugar in unsweetened form. Good to drink and substitutes well in many cooked dishes.

Thanks PrBkk.
I am interested in what are the current going rates baht/sqm for condo service charges on the riverside.
Do you or others have any up to date rates.
Thanks.
No, no info specific to the area. If no one here knows you could find out by looking at condos for sale, calling the agent and asking for the information . FYI, mine is 40, lower Sukhumvit.

That's crazy cheap: probably ok while the building is more less new but would nowhere near cover a realistic sinking/contingency fund for when things need fixing, as will inevitably happen. So I would think the increase is warranted if it's for that purpose ( and will need to increase further as the services and facilities age).

And for a piece of trivia history: that song went to No 1 during the week after JFK's inauguration, knocking off Wonderland By Night by Bert Kaempfert ( the latter was played at one of the inauguration balls)

Give the guy a break: he's a bit jealous rather than worried about respect. It's one thing not being too worried about what goes on when out of the country but something else when confronted directly.

This award needs a better name. Hollywood has The Oscars, I propose naming the TV award The Ratbags.

Some I buy in Thailand and have delivered; some I bring from Europe and Australia ( just 200 or 300mls at a time. No one in customs has shown any interest and neither does security screening. I suspect they are more interested in large scale importation for sale rather than individuals.

Only if you live to 120-170 years of age would that even remotely be considered middle age.
Old data, old thinking ,but feel free to consider yourself old at any age you choose. The new data, based on changing health and ageing patterns cites 65 as the new middle age rather than 50.

Middle age is 60-85, IMO
Here is the new Australian embassy in Bangkok
in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits

That is a great building and worked well as an embassy until it became surrounded and overlooked by many high-rise office towers and condos. The new one looks like a fortress but I guess that's what embassies have to be these days.
