  1. I have MM2H 10 year visa, but chose Thailand instead to retire. Penang: no language problem; crime minimal with strict law enforcement; clean water from the tap; house and land ownership permitted; environment issues strongly enforced; however, seemed somewhat dull and sterile compared to Thailand and more expensive. Thailand: language problem; people not as peaceful and tolerant as expected; driving is a nightmare; visa and residence rules much harsher; not as crime-free as expected; many ladies seeking (older) farangs but expect financial support for relatives etc; however, free and easy lifestyle, easy social life etc.

I'm still not sure if I made the right decision.

  2. I was quoted a reasonable premium for a policy at my age (74, living in Samui, with a Bt 40 000 excess), but then discovered that if I go into Bangkok International, there is a 25% co-payment (the only hospital in Thailand where this applies), plus another 25-30% co-payment if over 70, plus no cover for dental or vision over 65 or pre-existing conditions. On top of that, there are maximum payments for certain procedures/complaints, but no reduction in premium for these factors. I was left wondering if they would ever have to pay for anything.

  3. There are nearly always pull issues and push issues. Living in South Africa, the push issues were crime (with associated violence), the rising power of the Unions, ANC corruption and incompetence, anti-business and worker friendly legislation etc etc. The pull issues

were friendly and non-aggressive people, similar cost of living to SA, no winter. I was 72 and retired here. Of course the reality is not always what one expects, especially as some Thais are not without aggression and Thailand has its own political problems. Also the cost of living is actually higher than SA (in Samui).

  4. My GF had no idea who Madiba was. I find that most Thais have never heard of South Africa, never mind its most famous politician/freedom fighter. It does seem that the education system is very insular. Having said that, I also found people in the USA very ignorant of anything outside their borders. They seem to think that lions roam the streets of Johannesburg and most people live in mud huts. I was once asked by a young lady (not that young) in Baltimore where I came from. When I answered London she said "isn't that near the Eiffel tower?"
