  1. OK,

    That was interesting.

I just updated the bios on this computer, which I had said I would try, and now I lost the speakers, but the headphones work for music playback.

This may be a good sign, since this might signify that the new update to the bios did change some sound related files, and that now I may have more luck with getting everything working.

And JSP, I tried removing Pulse at first, but for some reason it came back after I rebooted.

I think one of the repositories must have it as a requirement for some of the applications, maybe.

  2. And, for those who do not believe in god,

There is one pressing question that you gotta ask yourself:

If you cannot lay the responsibility at God's feet,

Then can you accept the responsibility yourselves,

To believe that you are fit to decide whether or not to bring a human life into this world, to face torment, and pain, as well as some pleasure, with no assurance of success, and likely great hardship.

Who are you to decide, anyway?

I feel, personally, that I do not have the right to make this decision for someone else.

I do not have the right to decide for another human whether or not he/she should be forced to exist in this world,

Sometimes for over 100 long years.

That is right. How can I feel that I have the right to condemn another to pure hell on earth, in some cases.

There are no guarantees in life, and it is the biggest risk of all,

    To be born.

I would never presume to be so omniscient that I could logically make this decision for another human.

And, sometimes, I also wish that no one had taken it upon themselves to make this decision for me.

    Happy days.

    Or....

If you believe in a god, or gods,

Then you do not need to take responsibility for the life of another,

When the crappola hits the fan.

    Its not my fault,

    God did it.

  3. I am happy.

But, still, I never win anything.

I just can't help myself, sometimes you just must write something here, like

Adding a final letter in Scrabble,

    And another.

This is becoming a very insidious habit, which leads to lost time on other important things.

I am not saying this is not important.

However, should we not all have some prizes, or something?

Or, why can't we sort of just rate ourselves according to top 20 percent down to bottom 20 percent?

I like to think of myself as part of the top 90%.

Most harm in the world is caused by people doing important things.

    SC

Most harm in the world is caused by wealthy powerful people doing important things.

And, of course my goal is to join the top 90% in 2014. 2557 to us

  4. Speaking of proper owners in more developed countries you don't want to read about the dogs in Detroit.

Good example of post-modern third world America.

I don't like to read about oppressed and downtrodden dogs anywhere,

But especially in the Motor City, where they invented the thing that dogs love most,

    Going for a ride.

  5. Yes, it is true. I am the worst speller and don't like the results of this, my longest shortcumming.

What I need is some sort of dictionary add-on to Chrome that will automatically correct me errors as I type in real time.

I want a very extensive dictionary so that I do not need to stop and then search for the correct spelling of a difficult or estoteric word,

    Everytime I mistype one.

    What is available?

Mostly, as here, I start out OK, with the first letter being spelled correctly, but then the alphabet hits the fan.

In the MS Word program, this software has a pretty efficient spell checker which allows me to type fast while depending on the software to automatically correct for typos, caps, periods, mispellings, even before I ahve finished typing each world.

As you can see, whatever I am here using now, just does not do the job.

I am sure that others wouls like suggestions also.

    I use Chrome, mostly,

    Running on a linux computer.

I do not want to use the editors available in linux to first type each comment and then past into the comment area on TVF.

I just like to type the comment and hit the button in black, Post New Topic/Comment

Also, I have not yet gotten the LibreOffice spellchecker set up, but i neve r really liked it, and it is very slow to wake up and load.

There are some very powerful text editors available in linux of course, but I have never really gotten used to them, although they are about as powerful as you can get.

I like to paly around with them, but not for posting comments on TVF.

This is a pretty find topic I would say, and potentially very suful to some.

    Thanks for any good ideas,

Because probably this probelm can be solved in 2 mintues if I just can find the correct software to install whcih will make up for my natural clumsiness at the keyboard, not to mention my natuarll proclivities to slothfulness and stubborn refusal to learn to spell.

    Tks!

(I have been using the StarOffice program which has now become LibreOffice since about 1999, if I recall correctly. And I always liked it. A real shame that it wont' load faster, and be more polished. Whte word program by MS is about the best thing that Microsoft has ever done, I guess. But it is WAY overpriced, and it should be banned because it puts a strnagle hold on inovation when it does not allow free exchange of file types and formatting. This is why we need a universal opensoruce file system, which we already have, if only Microsoft and word would adopt it. Tks.)

  6. I want to ask:

Why don't we manage our dogs better?

For example, anyone who routinely walks around for exercise in the back roads in mountain lanes and byways,

Has probably run up against some very angry, fierce, ferocious, and aggressive dogs.

Some seem downright dangerous, and will not let me pass on my way to a nice relaxing walk.

I really do not like this, because otherwise life would be so much nicer.

So why can't we curb and control our lovely dogs.

    I also love dogs.

But the proper management of dogs can lead to a better life for both human and canine, alike.

    So what is the answer,

    Since I am now asking.

I'm confused by your use of pronouns.

Speaking for those I know personally WE do manage OUR dogs very well thank you.

There are many dogs in Thailand - perhaps the majority - that don't seem to be owned by anyone, but are allowed to roam the streets as they like and are fed and sometimes otherwise cared for by one or more of the Thais living nearby.

However no one is "responsible" for the actions of these dogs as a proper owner is in more developed countries.

That is the root of the problem.

In more developed countries, every animal must be accounted for, licenses and taxes paid and the owner responsible for managing it, paying for stolen chickens, liability for passersby being bit, etc.

Any dogs without the proper tags found roaming the streets are taken down to the dog pound/animal control facility, and usually put down after a period of time if no one claims it or wants to adopt it.

My understanding is that "Thai culture" is opposed to these practices.

    That's your answer

I suppose I might have used IT.

For example, speaking of the canine, how does IT manage ITS humans.

However, I also do not like the idea of euthanizing the stray canines we see roaming around, on the roads, and on campus.

I believe we need a strict policy of neutering the beasts, so that less suffering will occur.

Instead of killing the dogs, we should educate people that neutering is the best policy which does not cause suffering, and which any animal rights orgs should welcome.

So why not put some real money behind this, so that we can control other things like the risk of rabies transmission?

I do not mind roaming dogs, either, for the interim until the unwanted dog population is significantly decreased though population control.

I sort of enjoy the roaming dogs on campus, decked out in brightly colored dog blankets, snoozing in the grass, or wandering around in the cafeteria.

This does not bother me, and sort of makes me think of Tom Jones, in the Fielding novel.

My main concern here is for both the welfare of the dogs, and for my right to walk in the CM surrounding hills, unimpeded by canine bullies.

  7. I am happy.

  9. I find it amusing when people state things as inarguable facts, yet are unwilling or unable to provide any supporting documentation.

For example: Taxes are the primary reason the percentage of smokers in the US has been reduced.

Stated any number of time in the thread, yet nothing to support the claim other than that fact that taxes are high, and smoking is down.

Using the same logic, I think we can make a decent argument that fat people actually live longer.

Fact: People in the US are fatter than they were 30 years ago.

Fact: People in the US live longer than they did 30 years ago.

Fact: Increased obesity is why people in the US are living longer.

You do realise that not only do the thai and usa governments not tax sugar so you should happy about that, they actually subsidise it's production.

Hiphip hooray. They went even further beyond taxing it they actually subsidise it. Surely this is the opposite of a regressive tax on sugar and as such must be progressive taxation?

That's the excuse for subsidising sugar and petrol. Such subsidies encourage waste and unnecessary use, and are probably the most invidious actual policy of SE Asian governments.

    SC

The subsidizing of water in China, and elsewhere, is another travesty.

Beijing is dying of thirst, and yet they subsidize water. Very nutty.

I think candy bars here in Thailand are far too expensive.

    5 Baht for a Jack & Jill?

    Peng Mak!

But, if you don't get drunk every night on subsidized rice liquor, then you can probably afford a few.

And for anyone who stops drinking, candy bars are good to eat.

  10. You basically use two audio devices (chipsets) on one computer, the first audio device is the Realtek ALC887 chip mounted on your mainboard, the second audio device is the Logitech USB headphone.

Logitech is not famous for Linux support, actual if you search the internet you will find that Linux support is very low to not existing.

I have a Chinese USB telephone for Skype, which also connects to the USB and it works flawless, when somebody calls me with Skype I hear the ring-tone through the speakers and when I pick-up the phone I hear the audio with my cheap (150 THB) Chinese telephone

When you use Linux as operating system you need to be a bit more careful what accessories you buy for your computer. Famous brand names who advertise “driver-less install” or “MS Windows plug-N-Play” are often not a good sign...

One advice I can give is that you check the USB bus arrangement of your computer, and try to connect your Logitech USB audio device as close as possible to USB port 0 (first USB port). Also make sure that the device is plugged into a USB 2.0 port. Linux scans the USB ports for device a bit different than MS Windows, and therefore you can have very different results by using another USB port.

As example I have an old USB Cannon Lide 20 scanner, which I still use sometimes. On my latest computer based on a Asus Z87M-Plus mainboard the USB scanner works only on two USB ports with one USB port to guarantee that it will always be seen... (by the way the scanner is so old that MS Windows 7 and 8.1 not even support it anymore).

Thanks a lot regarding your thought about the Chinese USB Skype phone, which I really want to try!

And, yes you are right about Logitech headphones USB, and the fact that they never want to talk about linux when you call the support engineers.

I have used Logitech for the past 5 years because i just really like their cheap headphones which are durable and comfortable and perform well, with adjustable volume, and a long warranty period with fast service.

I was able to get them working with opensuse 12.x

I realize that you need to be careful when choosing hardware,

However, I have found over the years that the contributors seem to do a very good job providing drivers, even better than on Windows OS.

In this case, I have basically three devices, (not just 2), I have analog INTEL, and HDMI INTEL, and Logitech devices to choose from.

I chose analog and Logitech devices.

Skype on Windows 7 works fine, and I am wondering if because Opensuse 13.1 has just been released, there may still be needed some work on the Skype application for Linux, or if Opensuse needs updating here.

I WILL CHECK WHICH USB PORT is 2.0 , Good Point! Tks.

(During the past 3 days, the Opensuse Website Forumsite has been Hacked, and thus shut down awaiting a solution to stolen passwords. So, I am also waiting to add some files that might help.)

Also, I will check to see if a bios update might be available.

These days, multimedia is so crucial to the use of almost any computers, that Linux, I think, needs to concentrate heavily on making improvements to its installation process here. Or, I could be wrong about this.

I just know that I do not need to spend as much time when installing Windows, to get the audio working.

    Thank you for your help!

  11. So again, what have you decided needs to be done about the sugar that is killing all the fat Thais?

It's not my call but I think they should consider a substance tax on ALL sugars. Or if not, at least watch closely to look at results from other countries.

Also make transfats illegal in processed commercial products.

Require labeling for food products in retail stores with clear icons about danger levels for danger substances.

Try to encourage manufacturers to offer actually healthier choices at normal prices (not easy).

PR campaign to make half hulled rice SEXY. (Why not?)

Sure throw in the education campaign as well.

Require labeling for food products in retail stores...

Sure throw in the education campaign as well.

Those are the only two items in your list that I would agree with.

As for the rest, you are assuming that you are better equipped than I to make those choices for me. I find that both arrogant and insulting. I am educated and intelligent enough to make those decisions for myself. If I choose to have two spoons of sugar in my coffee, who are you to tell me that I shouldn't? Who do you think you are to advocate that I should be exorbitantly taxed for that small pleasure?

You exhibit the traits of far too many 'Public Health' jobsworths, who think they should be the moral arbiters of the human condition. What arrogance! What hubris! Just who do you think you are?

I tell you what. I won't seek to pass judgement on your lifestyle if you will extend me the same courtesy, ok? So no more talk of coercion through taxes, ok?

We don't need self-righteous do-gooders hectoring us daily, thank you. We can muddle along just fine without them, and probably enjoy our lives a lot more into the bargain. And if our lives are somewhat truncated as a result of the lifestyle we've chosen, then so be it. You may see quantity as the ultimate goal, but I would go for quality.

As Kingsley Amis once perspicaciously quipped:

“No pleasure is worth giving up for the sake of two more years in a geriatric home at Weston-super-Mare”

“No pleasure is worth giving up for the sake of two more years in a geriatric home at Weston-super-Mare”

It is NOT about this, of course.

The question is about living a healthy life, one which does not overtax the public health system of Thailand.

And this is why you do not want fools loading up on sugar drinks, mostly,

    Candy, and sugar.

It is a burden on the health system.

Personally, I think that sugar lends very little which is positive to my life.

I don't much think that sugar to produce alcohol for imbibing is much help to humankind either.

Sugar consumption is generally not a good thing.

But, if I choose to consume it, then I want it as cheap as possible.

We should be able to smoke untaxed cigarettes too

Providing that we sign a pledge not to use public health resources.

The fatter the other males in society,

    The better I like it.

    Just makes me look better.

If we choose to take risk, like eating sugar, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, engaging in unprotected sex, something i just love,

Then we should ensure that society is not made to pay for our illogical behavior.

I think it is interesting to consider the Mormon society,

Whatever else you might think, they mostly all look so very healthy.

    And talk about smiles,

They should have a land of smiles all to themselves.

They are ALWAYS smiling, and way too happy for my tastes.

They probably also have much less taste for junk food.

Smoking, caffeine, and alcohol are definitely out of their picture.

    Healthy is actually sexy, too.

Rotten teeth are a turn off.

Fat ugly bloated skin does nothing for me in the sack.

Love handles, I do not like.

If you really want to see slim and trim, in both the feminine and male form,

Take a look at this video.

I wonder how much sugar these girls eat:

    Better to look like this,

Rather than to overeat junk food.

    Eat fruit.

  12. Regarding some of the information you requested:

(Sorry, I would have posted this earlier, but fell asleep for a few hours, then awoke not a bit refreshed.)

    Linux 3.11.6-4-desktop

    openSUSE 13.1 (Bottle) (x86_64)

    KDE Platform Version 4.11.3

All other info can be gleaned from reading the specs on the MB: Asus

    H87M-E

    https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/H87ME/#support

    Realtek ALC887

And the specs on the CPU perhaps http://ark.intel.com/products/75047/

Although not really pertinent to audio question.

    ----------

The Skype sound is normal when Skype is opened in Windows 7, which in turn is running on Opensuse 13.1 in virtualbox.

And, the headphones will work, except that if the USB is unplugged and then reconnected, the audio through the headphones is not restored.

Truly, Linux sound is a pleasure to behold.

I suppose it is just a matter of finding the correct settings after much trial and error, and it has always been this way on every install I have done with PULSE or ALSA, and USB headphones, with connected speakers.

Maybe things would be easier with a separate sound card, however I have neither sound card nor GPU, which i do not want.

I have only tried so far with pulse audio.

I tried to remove pulse, but it keeps coming back (maybe I should remove the repository for something?

(Is this a result of a political conflict of interest in the Linux community? I wonder.)

  13. And, this is serious TV that is also humorous.

Really, I wish there were more.

The Fawlty Towers things are also funny, but have less meat.

Maybe, also, the Yes Minister episodes will be too difficult for someone who is not more conversant with the politics of the UK, even though we can still appreciate some of the humor.

Many years ago, we used to look to British film and some TV to see products that were better than much of what we got in the USA.

I have not been watching any TV since 1979, when I recall taking in a Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman before boarding the plane and saying ByeBye to TV for literally years.

Where I was, almost all TV was nonexistent due to martial law, and the blocking of international radio was also practiced.

Once a week, we had Mission Impossible, and that fat man comedian from the UK that was so popular in the 1980s.

    Why mention him here.

Mostly undaring sex jokes and sex skits.

Yes Minister was brilliant. After a break of a couple of years the series returned , having become Yes Prime Minister. Enjoy watching!

The series, Yes Prime Minister, was re-made in 2013 with 6 episodes, featuring current events. I haven't seen those.

Where were you situated GMG with the martial law?

I spent many years in the big T.

Lots of fun, a time when most pop culture from the west was barred from disturbing my thoughts,

    And equanimity.

  14. The best disposable razor by far is the Shavy 4 blade from Tesco. They cost around 90 baht for two and stay sharp for a few weeks.

I have heavy facial hair but I don't need to hone (run the razor twenty times each way across denim or a cotton shirt) the blades for at least the first three weeks.

There's plenty of decent razors out there that aren't made by Gillette. The Fusion refills have a 4000% mark up on them.

    This I will DEFINITELY try.

I stopped going to Texaco years ago, though.
