  1. Thanks for that - a helpful and positive post that should make life in Thailand that little bit easier for all of us

    SC

It would have been even better in NYC, rather than Thailand.

Here, pretty much all mornings are relatively easy.

But AMs in the beginnings of January, in NYC,

    Fogettabaoudit

Can you imagine getting up in the freezing north, and then scraping your skin with a Schick?

Even in Thailand, this is no place for the Gillette or Schick, I believe.

  2. There have been razor reviews in the Chiang Mai forum in the past, talking about the old Schick injector blades.

    But what is that?

I am here to pay you back for all the times you read my topics, when you probably shouldn't have,

    But could not help yourselves.

You kept reading, so I kept posting.

    Is that a good thing?

So I want to thank you all, by recommending something small that may change your life in the mornings:

The Top's Disposable Razors 4 per pack, with pivoting head,

    Satisfaction Guaranteed

Twin Blade: 019120 last digits of bar code

Here is the thing, I have been having so much trouble with my Schick and Gillette razors, the plastic disposable ones,

Which I think are worse than pure garbage,

Because they start out too dull, and they quickly get duller,

And you need to exert too much force on the razor, scraping up and down

    Up and Down

    UP AND DOWN

Your face until you are just about scraped raw,

Something like the scraping the doctor does but to a different gender, if you know what I mean.

And then, all of a sudden, I tried the Top's razors, which are lower in price, I think.

But after many years using the dull ones, I got nicked quite a few times and bled and bled, the first day.

Now, I have learned to just use the very lightest of force, and the razors do glide up and down my face,

And slice off the beard with extremely low effort.

Don't worry, folks, I am not joking here.

After the first day, I was ready to hang up the towel,

But then I realized that I should not use so much force, and scrape back and forth at 3 feet per second, as I normally do with the Schick garbage.

And then I learned what truly wonderful razors these are.

So try a bag of them next time you go to Tops.

And remember to go slow and to use the lightest of touch.

The hair on the upper lip, I spent minutes on with the Schick,

And it still would not come off.

Now with the Tops, the top lip beard is no match for me.

Seriously, I am trying to do you a favor out of the kindness of my heart.

Some of you may think you have stubble like Iron Trees, that palm of Asia that sits low to the ground.

But even this stubble is no match for the Top's razor.

Who actually manufactures these razors, I have no idea.

    Just glad they do.

    =================

    And another thing:

I recently have come to love the color purple.

    not the Whoopi G film,

    But the actual color.

So if you want some simple soap that smells nice,

    Try the purple Parrot Gold.

I love it because it leaves my skin smelling kissing soft and

I enjoy getting clean twice a day since coming to Thailand.

Have fun with your razors, and the soap that I use in place of shaving creme, which I am too cheap to buy.

Let me here know how you enjoy you mornings before the mirrors.

    Tks.

  3. So, then, does anyone here still recall the red flower song?

Because i am wondering what it actually means. It has been haunting me since I first posted it,

And I just can't wash it out of my hair.

Maybe someone here with a more philosophical bent of mind than mine will be able to make

Hind, Hide nor Tail of it.

    WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN???

    I need to know!

    Thank you.

    Here it is again:

  4. I hope that we all realize that in Thailand, especially,

To argue there is no god, is pointless and needless, and probably also causes avoidable discomfort to all of our Thai friends.

I would never argue religious points of view here, because this is just not something that people here seem to find enjoyable.

I have asked a Thai friend what she knows about Thai scientists who obviously must be questioning the existence of god.

And she told me that there are many who do not believe, but that no one every goes out of their way to argue there is no god,

And probably Dawkins would be given the cold shoulder, something that rarely happens.

But more than this, being true to my lights,

And being always in a fairly existential nihilistic frame of mind,

I never think it is worth a calorie to turn on enough brain cells to argue in a way that will cause harm to others,

If they choose to delude themselves about something, anything, just as long as this causes no harm.

    I WAS thinking though that:

    IF

Someone does believe in something that does not actually exist,

And this belief causes this person to set forth on a course of action that becomes negative in its impact,

    Then,

What was first thought to be harmless delusion, actually turns out to be a harmful belief.

    Here is a good example:

If through belief in god, one thinks that one can have children, even though one is not able to truly support them financially in a way that will be best for said children,

And then the reasoning used to justify having said children is that the lord will provide,

And if there actually were no lord to provide,

Then the children would be just out of luck, now would they not?

It would actually have been better, perhaps, that they were not born into such circumstances.

So I do believe that unless one has the the financial stability, and much more financial wealth than most have,

Then it is wise to not have those children, but rather adopt children because at least this will improve a less good situation to one that is some better.

So yes, sometimes an innocent belief in god, can have repercussions that will do harm, even though ones intent is good, and one does not intentionally do harm.

    Therefore:

It is always best to follow the scientific method,

Always best to not believe in some things, that are not part of the reality we can see, touch, and measure.

But i would not says such a thing among friends in Thailand, if it were to cause distress to those who want to believe.

    Does this make sense?

  5. I now seem to have both usb headphones and analog speaker output working, but this experiment is still interesting:

For example, Skype sounds terrible, like it is drowning in 2 fathoms of water, when it is used with the installed linux application.

But with the windows application on the same PC, installed on a virtualbox of Windows 7, then it sounds normal.

I think that even Skype is tired of the PULSE audio.

Strange that Skype sounds OK on Windows, but not OK on Linux, on the same PC with all the same hardware. using virtualbox.

  6. Never use pulse , alsa has always worked fine for me. Then again, I don't use gnome or KDE. Maybe you need to simplify your life (and go smoke a joint or take a zanex).

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus SlimKat using Tapatalk

Although your answer is rather original, it stops short of actually telling us what you are using if you are not using GNOME or KDE.

I suppose we could guess you are not using x-windows and are just staring at green letters floating by on a black screen.

But seriously, any thoughts why APPLE Windows OS spends more time getting audio half way right?

Or, are you trying to say that anyone should be able to get audio right on a linux pc, given half a brain?

It would be nice though, if anyone might be interested in popularizing the linux desktop for somebody to organize a few standards to live by, and setup the audio by.

It is easy to read how others are doing it, setting up audio, and it really does not seem as if anyone is ecstatic about what they have at this time.

    No?

(yes, i agree, never use pulse! but this is not so easy with KDE and gnome getting on the repulsive bandwagon)

  7. The ONLY thing that certainly is NOT controversial, sir,

Is that we have our tastes set at a very early age.

If we are restricted from eating salt, fat, and sugar when we are less than One,

And continue with this restriction through the first few years,

And we substitute fruit, and healthier foods,

Then we will maintain these preferences into old age.

I recall that no one in Taiwan would drink COKE normally,

They said it was too sweet.

    They hated candy, most,

But loved fruit, which they saw as being a treat when they were growing up.

    Fatty meats however, were loved,

Because these were considered treats when meat was financially too rich for their diet, most days.

If parents in Thailand will restrict the junk foods, completely, when children are young, then they will have a fighting chance when the kids become teens, even troublesome teens.

Probably the same goes for alcohol, somewhat.

  8. I have never used Apple.

I have used Windows since NT, or even further back, since the beginning of DOS.

But I have never been satisfied with Linux Audio support.

The reason I mention this now, is that I am trying to connect:

    a) One pair of larger microlab speakers, and

    B) One Logitech USB headphones, to

    c) Opensuse 13.1 64 bit PC

I don't really think it matters much which distribution you are using. It matters more if you are using KDE or GNOME, I imagine.

But, I am using KDE 4.11.3

I got the microlab speakers to work.

Then I got the Logitech headphones to work.

But I have not gotten both to work in the following way:

    1. Speakers will play by default

    2. Or, headphones will play when USB is plugged in.

This is the way everything works by default in my off-the-shelf Win 8.1 laptop installation.

I did no tweaking of the sound settings.

They just work right on the Win 8.1 OS.

So, I think both ALSA and PULSE are repulsive by comparison.

And GNOME used to use ALSA on the UBUNTU distro, but now has switched to PULSE.

Does anyone have any thoughts about Linux Audio, and which is better.

And, anyone else having trouble just doing something simple like I am trying to do, so that when I want to use SKYPE, i do not get my ears zapped by loud, VERY loud, buzzing!

This is NOT FUN nor FUNNY anymore, friends!

  9. Shhhhhh, my nightly Thai soap is my guilty pleasure

Easy to watch, I know the plot every time since it never changes....along with the actors!

I am not saying that it would not be good for your Thai language acquisition project.

And, if this proves true, let me know so that I can join you.

Unfortunately, at the present time my Thai is just not good enough to get much out of the soaps.

However, the time will come, I hope.

  10. I live in Chiang Mai at the moment, near the uni, but would gladly also be in Chiang Rai, or Lampang near the uni, or in the hills of CR.

I think there are some Chinese tea growers up there.

It does not matter here or there, but I must have the university, so it is here.

I come from the west coast, not Miami, but in the gulf.

Before that, I came from the cheese steak capital of the USA.

    And before that, near Boston.

    But I/m no redneck.

I don't mind the Asian way of life.

I will stay here in Asia until I die.

And, hopefully, I won't go out with my boots on.

I want to die in bed thumping.

    Knock on wood.

A bit of Puccini - maybe they will see the irony of Madame Butterfly especially if you are located in Pattaya .

THANKS! for this great find on YouTube!

    Truly beautiful.

Who needs irony, for a while, while watching this?

  12. Maybe FastStone Image Viewer can help you - http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

Agree with that one and is my primary. Picasa is OK, but find it more complicated than necessary and rarely use it anymore.

You mention an addon for FF so perhaps something like this is what you have in mind. Have not used it but has a good rating - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/imagetweak/

After seeing this, I just downloaded the FastStone onto a copy of Win7.

Picasa is no longer being supported for linux.

Since most people now seem to use Chrome, then would there not be something from the Chrome browser that would work on windows and linux.

  13. Speaking of which, werewolves while in London,

There was a very well received recent film regarding werewolves in London,

Does anyone know the name of the film?

Must have been produced during the past 10 to 15 years.

They had plenty of werewolf action jumping all over the buildings one night, while being chased by the city folk.

I think the werewolf destroyed almost all the city.

Extremely good visual effects interlaced with actual action scenes.

This is one of the few werewolf films I truly enjoyed so much,

Although the Jack Nicholson flick was another winner.

Basically I just fall over backwards every time I see one of these werewolf films.

The other monster films cannot hold a candle to the werewolf.

What about I was a teen werewolf? Another winner.

And this tune you posted, I very much do enjoy.

The hairstyle is very wolfish in these vids.

I also like Tom Wolfe with his white suits.

And also Thomas Wolfe, and Virginia Wolfe.

    And look homeward Angel.

  14. My wife and I just finished building our dream home in a rural area of Nakhon Sawan. We are about 1km off the main highway between Bangkok and Chaing Mai. 10 km North to the nearest small city with a decent size Tesco and 40km south to Muang Nakhon Sawan which is a fairly big Thai city with pretty much anything you could need. We love the people here in the country side and I find I can't relate to most of the negativity I read on TV about Thailand or Thai people. We have 5 rai with a big pond and many mature fruit trees and the most amazing mountain view in the whole Provence! The stars fill the sky at night, and nature surrounds us during the day. It is delightful!

I grew up in Canada and spent my 20's working in Florida and the New York City before coming here a little over a year ago when I was thirty. Could not be happier with the decision!

    You are exactly right.

    About the negativity.

  15. May I add a thought:

In days to come, when we are all old and gray, we will look back at these posts, a word here, a word there,

And we will be able to so clearly recall exactly what we were doing as we typed each entry,

Sort of like a smell that brings us back to some point in time,

    Or a tune,

    A taste.

This will bring us feelings of nostalgia for what has gone before, and I for one do not much look forward to moving ahead,

And actually I think I like it now where I am.

No doubt some day, though, I will read these words and rue the day I decided to leave.
