  1. i dont agree that the prime minister is in any way responsible.

radical islam and the terrorism it spreads has one aim , to split the opposition and destabilise and eventually bring down the governments of the countries where it is active.

it is almost impossible to fight terrorism by "normal rules of engagement" , thats why it is so successful.  the intimidation placed on the peace loving muslims to keep quiet is high , hence little or no co operation from villagers , many of whom probably support the cause , if not the methods used , of separation.

this is already a worldwide problem and the world should take heed of the increasing strength of the storm that will eventually split the world and involve us all , or all our children.

Taxexile - you sound a bit like the German Nazi propaganda in the 30's and 40's about Bolsheviks and Jews - or perhaps like western propaganda in the 60s - communism, domino theory and the lot.

Radical Islam does not spread terrorism. Fanatics do. But they do not have the support, nor the means to split the world - unless the rest of the world allows them to do so by retaliating in ways that cause more problems than they solve.

The main cause of terrorism is injustice - real or percieved. And a real and lasting solution needs to address the root casues, rather than focusing exclusively on the symptoms.

An interesting point and certainly one with much greater than average insight. As I read most of the others, it is clear that whoever is pulling the strings on this have done a good job at convincing the masses that the Muslims are bad folks with whom the harshest courses of action are necessary. We thought the same about the communists not that long ago as you have so cleverly pointed out. Very little is as it seems and you can be sure there are those in the Thai government are aware. It is a very difficult situation and the solution is far from obvious.

Your right about one thing.....I am convinced muslims are bad people. Just out of curiosity, can anyone name one muslim country without a terrorist group operating in it? I wonder why terrorist groups like Muslims or ......why Muslims like terrorist groups.

Maybe its just Muslims in large groups that is the problem. I do know one muslim and she seems very nice.

Why is it when they gather in a mosque they feel they need to jump on their little 125cc motorbikes and go shoot people? Or strap explosives to their chest and jump on a bus.

Maybe its the muslims who have convinced me they are bad people.

  2. I usually stay on the road next to the fountian. Phone Preseuth I think is the name of the hotel. 660 baht/night. It's clean with air, hot water, ubc and close to some pretty good restaurants.

I have had a few meals by the Mekhong as well. If you can stand the misquitoes, its a very nice place to drink a beer as the sun is going down.

I liked the people there as well.

  3. How much do you want to spend on the hotel?

There is a good restaurant by the fountian. During the week they have a lunch buffet. On the other side of the fountian is a french and an italian restaurant.

Vientiane usually closes down at 11pm but there are a few all night places through out the city.

  4. Although I don't care for Muslims much because I stereotype them as terrorist, why not give them what they want on a trial basis.

If this brings peace to the region, why not give them a chace to govern themselves for a period of 5 to 10 years.

If they are successful, let them keep their little 3 state country. If not, they return to unconditional Thai rule.

Let them elect their own leaders and raise their own armies Let them pay for their own public services like hospitals and police.

Make a rule that says their country will be subject to monitoring from the UN to make sure it does not become a haven for drug smuggling or terrorist.

Those who want to stay can and everone else can be moved to different parts of Thailand.

All the money Thailand saves from getting rid of the 3 souther provinces will be used to help resettle those people who do not want to live in this new country.

I wonder how many people will stay and how many will move.

  5. WhiteShiva, if you think kidnapping, torture, and murder is the definition of a peaceful demonstration than you really have a few bolts loose between your ears.

I will be very happy to see the mothers arrested for their involvement in the kidnapping, torture, and murder of these marines.

2 marines died because of their actions. There was nothing peaceful about it.

  6. There is only one boy in the photo. There does appear to be girls there as well.

I don't agree about the PM being responsible unless there was peace in the region before he was elected PM.

I am angry hearing of the killing of marines. I find it difficult to feel pity for the people in the south of Thailand.

I hope for peace, but I don't think it will happen now.

  7. I have a Honda Wave S 125. I had a Honda Wave R but it was stolen.

It's very dependable and easy to maintain.

I would buy insurance for theft on top of the basic insurance. Honda Waves are very popular. If your bike is stolen it dosent cover the entire cost of the bike but it will cover most of it.

  8. The news I saw broke out first on The Nation...

followups are coming in quickly now from variety of sources... this one is BBC (edit repeating portions):

    _40824074_ap_tanyong203.jpg

Women from the village helped seal off the roads

    Thailand villagers seize soldiers

Two soldiers are being held bound and gagged in Thailand's troubled south, as hundreds of villagers prevent security forces from retrieving them.

The men were seized after a drive-by shooting in the village of Tanyong Limo, which left one person dead.

Villagers took the two soldiers, who were not in uniform, and accused them of being involved in the shooting.

Thai authorities said the two were in fact chasing the suspected militants who carried out the attack.

According to the governor of Narathiwat province, Pracha Terat, the situation in Tanyong Limo remained tense.

Looking at the picture, parents kept their children out of school so they can teach their children to kill. Then they say they had nothing to do with the killing. They stopped police from entering the mosque. They are guilty of murder. Now their chidlren have blood on their hands.

Mobs are made up of men and women usually. This was an organized group. Where were their men during this event. Probably inside the mosque torturing the Marines.

The article quotes women saying many in the village will work to help find the killers. If this was true, I think they would have them already.

They are using the peace process as an excuse to get away with murder. After they commit a murder, they ask all to understand and be patient. We are suffering they say. Then the government backs off.

I think the patients of the people of Thailand is running thin. The behavior of the villagers only made things worse.

  9. Pretend there insn't a problem in the Thai South. Then you hear the story of the how mothers of one village stopped police and other soldiers from helping their comrades while their village was torturing and killing these two.

Where were their husbands? Would you let your wife take your children out and form a block-aid against armed soldiers and police known for their brutality? The husbands had to be in on this too.

In most normal countries, would this make the mothers (and husbands) accessory to murder?

IMHO, I would arrest the mothers and put the children in protective custody. The mothers are no better than terrorist.

They destroyed all chances for peace. They just made all soldiers in Thailand unsympathetic to their cause.

If they thought the violence was bad before, it will probably get worse now.

    Som nam na.

  10. Phnom Phen is about as friendly as a pissed off rattle snake. I think they make up their own rules up there. I went their once and have never been back because of the Thai embassy in Cambodia.

Maybe it has something to do with Cambodia burning down their embassy once. Perhaps they are trying to wreck Phonom Phen visa tourism to get even.

They really make Thai immagration look bad.

It is very discouraging to follow Thai law only to have the Thai Embassy in Phnom Phen make up their own rules.

On the other side of the coin, the Embassy in Vientiane, Laos is great. They are always very professional and very organsized. They always take time and answer any questions I ever had.

If immagration had a poll to find out which embassy is the best, I would vote for the Thai Embassy in Vientiane, Laos. They really reflect the motto of Thailand as being the land of smiles.

Even immagration in Nong Khai is great. The guys stamping the passports as you come through, the office in the city, and even the customs guys always seem to treat you with respect when you come through.

  11. :o Today I was into the Alanyaprathet Immigration to apply for my third one year extension based on support for Thai wife and I was told that the Immigration in Bangkok gave me 25 days extra last year, so for the past 25 days I have been in Thailand without visa and I'll have to pay 200 baht a day for that mistake!  The lady cop phoned many bosses in and around and I will have the final verdict tomorrow morning!  Is that really possible, being almost unbelievable for me since I have dealt with those people for 15 years now.  What should I do?

I had a mistake like that made by Don Mueong Airport once but I asked about it before the initial expiration date they stamped in my passport. They were able to fix it and restamped my passport with the correct date with a note inside. It was Aranypreth Immagration (located next to the police station) who fixed it.

  12. I just got an email back from Bangkok Bank branch in New York and they said:

    Dear Sir:

With reference to your question, you understanding is correct. When funds pass through our New York Branch, we will deduct $3.- for the transfer amount of $100.- or less and $5.- for the transaction over $100.- and remit the balance in U.S. dollar to our Bangkok office who will further credit your account. With regards, Sirivan Chuaypradit

Fees for my $25 transfer are as follows:

    Bank of America $3

    Bangkok Bank New York $3

    Bangkok Bank Thailand 200 baht

The wierd thing is Bank of America sent me an email saying:

Our records show that the $3.00 transfer fee was charged twice in error.

Therefore, we have applied a refund in the amount of $3.00 to your

account. The funds will be credited to your account the next business

    day.

So somehow, I made $3 on this transfer. I think what happened is Bank of America cannot account for the missing money so they credited it to my account instead of being federally accountable for missing funds from an ACH transfer.

  13. Just chatting with my gf...

she says, rop-bu-rii is the place where the temples and the monkeys are.

    Close to "lopburi" handle.

Where we went is "kow soy daew"

Think_too_mutt,....let me know when your back in town. I'll spring for the beers and we can sit on the side of the road and watch traffic go buy..lol.

If thats not enough fun we can try thai style fishing, I can show you how to do that. It might break the boredom.

If your wondering what Thai style fishing is,....its when you toss the net into the water and go in after it. I know a place where you always catch something.

I did the western style fishing Sunday. I almost caught a nice fish but he broke my line.

Hey,...there is 1 other farang here from Holland. His name is Barry. He says he knows of someone else here but who is not here at the present time. I wonder if he is talking about you?

  14. Needs more icons on how to find it.

or maybe i am just not seeing them.

Agree on promo stuff, pick a controversial event or news item and schedule a chat sesh!!

    pref when everyones sober!!!

I have an idea to get more people in there. Perhaps posting a time when a subject matter expert can be there chatting about a particular topic. Like Monday night at 7pm would be Visa night, Tuesday night at 7pm  would be Thai Business night, and Wednesday night at 7pm would be Thai teaching night etc....

Perhaps people would make time to log on and contribute to the discussion.

Richard, please feel free to coordinate some "scheduled events" with jayenram. We could certainly test it out and promote it! Sounds very intersting.

I'm on nearly every morning....if anyone wants to know about cow's n stuff :D

Hey,..I'm kinda interested in Cows and stuff. I have been thinking of raising a few for milk and food. Probably easier to buy these things from the market though. :o

I'll send him a message to see what he thinks. (He might be already working on it)

  16. Hey Muldoon, If you don't like Wang Somboon,  I am sure no one will miss your annual charity visit.

It's also the fact that many farangs like youself don't come here that keeps me here. Not that there is anything wrong with you, it just seems like the type of entertainment you might be looking for might cause problems in a small community.

Richard, just for clarity sake, I believe you are confusing "Muldoon" posts with "Think Not Enough."

btw, been through SaKaew myself several times and your descriptions as well as my own observations lend me to believe further that, indeed, it's a very nice place to be... Enjoy.

    :o

Ummmm.....Thanks sriracha john. I do apoligize to Mr Muldoon.... Thanks for pointing that out. If you guys ever visit, the beers are on me. Cheers! :D

It's a deal... but I'll have to overlook your Army past.... :D

How far up the road are you from Pak Nom Ron in Chantaburi? Perhaps next visa trip could be extended further North.

    :D

I am about 30 to 40 km from Pong Nom Ron. I am right on the border of Sa Kaeo and Chantaburi.

As far as my Army past is concerned, I try my best to over look it as well.

Speaking of Pong Nom Ron, do you know where exactly the white water rafting is that is supposed to be there?

  17. We don´t live there but have a house in Khao Chagan, better say a village next to Khao Chagan.I like it there and I can imagine to retire in Sa Keao town.

Khao Chagan is a very pretty place. The mountians there and its many caves covered with monkeys is always an interesting place to visit.

Sa Kaeo is usually very green except for the end of the cool season and hot season (Dec - Feb). This is when the leaves fall off the trees, the grass turns yellow, and the farmers burn everything. But once the rains start again, the green returns very quickly.
