  1. Higher excises on liquors approved

Four types of distilled liquors are subject to the change - special blend, brandy, whisky and others. So far, they had been subjected to a range of

    3550 <--------------TYPO

per cent of market price or Bt240 per litre of alcohol content. The new rate is

    4050 <--------------TYPO

per cent or Bt400 per litre, whichever is higher.

I think there is a typo somewhere according to what I read on the Nation website:

"Special blends, brandy, whisky and other types of distilled liquors are subject to the change. These types of liquor had been subject to a tax of between

    35-50

per cent of market price, or Bt240 per litre of alcohol content. The new rate is

    40-50

per cent, or Bt400 per litre - whichever is higher."

  2. I live about 18km from Cambodia in Sa Kaeo and take the bus to Bangkok all the time. Its very easy to do. To go 40 km from my village to Sa Kaeo is about 50 baht. To go the 250km or so to Bangkok is about 170 baht.

The bus is air conditioned and seats are not too bad. Sometimes they play movies on the bus. I usually take something to read because the trip takes about 5 hours. About halfway they stop for gas and everyone gets off to use the bathroom and buy something to eat. There is usually a bathroom on all of the air conditioned busses.

There are busses with just fans that are a lot cheaper but they are not as comfortable. The farthest I ever rode on one of them was 100km to Chantaburi from my village. Not very comfortable and standing room only.

The trains are great. I usually go 2nd class sleeper. Leave at night and arrive the next day at my destination. It helps if you take ear plugs and maybe something to cover your eyes if your on the top sleeper.

2nd class also has 2 bathrooms. 1 Thai style and 1 farang style. I usually ab nam in the Thai style one. It usually takes me all day on the bus to get to the train in Bangkok so the little shower is a welcome relief at the end of the day. Just don't drop anything in the big whole in the middle of the floor because you will never see it again.

They also serve food and drinks (including beer) on the train but its cheaper to buy your food and drinks before you get on the train.

The trains also have armed police for your safety who patrol the trains constantly. They are always very friendly and usually say hello to most farangs. They will also be the ones who punch your ticket.

It is quicker to fly but if you have the time, take the train.

  3. I know things have gotten a little better since the tsunami but I still read reports of tourism not being as good as it use to be.

What if the Thai government let everyone needing any visa service, new visa, extension, or anything else....to be done in Phuket or other tsunami devastated areas.

Would you go to Phuket rather than making a visa run to Laos or some other country to get a new visa?

Also, do you think something like this would help tourism in those areas?

  4. This whole topic has been covered time and time again.

    Please use the search facility.

I think there is a pointer to the summary on the main www.thaivisa.com

    home page.

I know its been discussed over and over. I have used the search feature and the answer is out there but sometimes finding the answer to my questions is like looking for life in outer space.

All I am saying is post the basics to start and maintain a Non-Immagrit O visa.

More people are getting married than playing on the football team but football has its own thread on Thai visa.

Have you forgot what its like to be new to Thailand?

  5. Non Immagrit O Visa questions are very popular on this forum. Most everyone has a different situation and questions of their own.

People discover Thailand everyday and some end up falling in love with not only the country but with a resident of Thailand as well.

It is safe to assume that people will constantly refer back to Thai Visa forum to search for the basic information needed to start and sustain a Non-Immagrit O visa.

I know you can eventually find the information doing a search on Thai visa, but for new people, who are new to the Thai visa process, this can take a long time.

If possible, could the powers that be post (pin) the basic information at the top of "Thai visas, residency and work permits"?

    :o

  6. You should have 20k with you because you will have a visa entry.  Not likely to be asked if dressed ok; but perhaps more likely than in the past.

The 10k would be entry without visa for 30 days.  And the higher 40k for a family entry together with visa.

    Mr Lopburi,

I am new to some of this so please forgive my ignorance. I thought the 20k you mentioned earlier was only for entry with a tourist visa. Is it also for applying for a non-immigrit o visa as well?

I thought the only financial requirement was 400,000 baht in the bank or a pension of only 40k/month.

With all the different types of visa, sometimes I do get confused.

  7. I'm helping my wife learn English. It is much easier to teach her to use the "f" sound in place of the "v" sound than to try to get her to say the "v" sound the way an American would.

As you stated earlier, "dtor dtao" and "dor dek" are hard for you to hear when some Thai people use words with those consonants.

The difference between "v" and "f" are also difficult for some Thai people when they here some farangs speak as well.

Lets say your teaching a class and you want the children to spell what you say using Thai letters. You say the word "van". Would they spell it "แวน" or "แฟน"?

I think its easier to get early Thai learners of English close to the right way to say "V" than to confuse them by teaching its a "W" sound.

Even the older matayom students I run across still use "W" in place of the "V".

I'm not a great English teacher either but it is fun exploring the different aspects of the Thai and English languages. Good luck to you and your classes.

  8. richard10365 Did Bangkok Bank charge the minimum fee (300 baht, .025% up to a max. of 500 baht) for the initial in-bound wire transfer (41 cents in your case)?

Also, where did the 41 cents come from? One of your accounts at BofA, or does BofA use their own money for this transaction(s) and then recoup it from you later?

The money came from my account. I called BB to get the exact amount in US currency (.41 cents).

I am not aware of any charges I incurred in Thailand. I am still trying to figure out the fees that were tacked on by BOA.

My pension gets deposited in my BOA account on the 1st of the month. I am doing a visa run to Laos at that time. When I return, I will transfer money to my Bangkok Bank account to see what happens.

  9. Wife says, mom thinks you need to pay.

Just how much are you buying your wife for? I just got married and was offered a house by the parents with land. They want their daughter to be happy and don't want anything from me. I do intend to give, I just can't right now.

It sounds kinda like some people raise kids like others raise crops. When they are ripe and ready to harvest they try to get as much money for their crop as they can.

I know this is custom, but 500,000 is a lot of money. I would wait until the baby is born first. See if the baby even looks like you.

I wonder how much they would ask for if their daughter was going to marry a Thai man?

  10. I also have BofA account and have never seen this option on their Internet Banking site.  A couple of years ago they specifically told me this was not available.  What state is your account in?  I wonder if there are different rules for each state.

Can you be more specific on how you initiated the option and how each transfer is handled? You say you called a number to get the option, what number? You start the transfer from the web site and then confirm the transfer via e-mail? You say you called a number to get the option, what number?

Thanks, this would be great, especially at the prices you quote.

    TH

I have an account in California. I sign onto my online acount.

This leads to a window with 5 main Tabs.

    Accounts

    Bill Pay & E-Bills

    Transfer Funds

    Investments

    Customer Service

Click on the transfer funds tab. This tabe opens up to transfer options. Select Accounts at other financial institutions option (3rd on the right). Then follow the instructions for setting up your transfer account.

There is an initial amount of money that has to be sent to the Bangkok Bank to verify the right account in Thailand. It is not alot. Mine was 41 cents. BOA will send you an email telling you when the money is sent 3 working days later.

I called Bangkok Bank central office up and asked them to tell me the amount. The told me and I went back to my computer, signed back online, and to the transfer account section.

My next step was to verify the ability to transfer from my BOA account to my Bangkok Bank account by telling BOA the amound Bangkok Bank said they received.

Once that was complete, they informed me my transfer account to Bangkok Bank was now active and I can transfer money immediately.

I dont have the number I called at the Bangkok Bank but you can probably get it from their website online. http://www.bbl.co.th/Bangkok+Bank/main.htm

  11. So other than the phone call you were able to do everything online at:  www.bankofamerica.com.......is this right?

That is correct. The only people I called was Bankok Bank to get the amount of how much (in US currency) was transfered to my Bangkok Bank account.

Everything else was done online at www.bankofamerica.com.

Now when I open my account on the internet, I have a tab I select (transfer funds) that lets me transfer from my BOA account to my Bangkok Bank account. It also has a option to let you choose next day or 3 day processing.

  12. Richard, have you actually done a transfer yet?  I'm also with BOA and I looked into this about a month ago......from what I gleaned it could not be done.  Hope you're right this will solve a problem for me.

I did the initial transfer. They sent 34 cents to my Bangkok Bank account.

You have to call to get this info because your bank book will show you had a transfer but that will be in baht. I called Bankok Bank on the phone and they told me the amount in cents BOA sent.

I had to go back online and verify the amount (put .34 next to where it says verify). It responded that the account is verified and I now I am able to send money back and forth.

I have not sent any other money yet because I am waiting for my next pension deposite to try it out.
