  1. try learn a few words, counting and polite greetings and stuff. You will be at TU and you will be studying with International students as long as Thai students who (should be able to..) speak english. I go to university here (not at TU but at another big uni in bkk) and I cant even try to practice speaking thai because everyone at school gathers around me to speak english with me.

Basically be prepared for your life to be ruined.. after you find out that you can be living life like this in bangkok, america will seem incredibly generic, boring, forced, and phony. Easily the best choice you have made in your life so far.

  2. A lot of young thai people love chatting line through MSN or through social networking sites. I think a lot of females feel more comfortable talking with guys ( Thai guys, remember these numbers are about real thailand not the ridiculous world of foreign men and thai women) then they would in person, and this leads obviously to quicker intimate contact, combine that with the semi new trend of you thai women starting to get more sexually empowered, especially at university level.

On a related note its so sickening when i see my friends myspaces/hi/facebook and see these eurotrash shitbags saying stuff like wow you look so tight, and hello mate lets shag, and other euro-drivel etc.. the thing is a lot of young girls really do get taken advantage of by these guys cause they dont know anybetter, but at least middle age thai cougars can counter attack those stats by taking the foreigners to the cleaners. very nice!

  3. thai food is amazing. Thailand has a huge variety of food especially with the ever tasty Isaan/Lao connection and the deep south bring in the muslim action.. wow.

i usually eat and cook only thai food although sometimes i eat foreign food if i hang out with some of my friends who are chefs, so they obviously have to prepare lots of euro shit, but its always pleasant to eat some cereal or something once in a while. The amount of healthy food here is amazing. Also if you dont like msg you can easily order or prepare food with out it. MSG and copious amounts of sugar really do distract from premium yummy food though.

  4. They can buy a lot of whisky for 150,000 Baht.

    ^^

holy shit !!! almost spilled rum EVERYwhere when i read that

anyways.. mr OP please read your own topic.. "setting up .. and self sustain " i dont think those work well together.. anyways they obviously survived somehow before the freemoney started arriving every month.. so once they had a taste they didnt want to go back to the old style..i would say, maybe get down and pay for something they can use for something and thats it.. ie a truck or a new bike (with sidecar) or something useful.. dont give them money as it will be wasted. You got 150 000 baht set aside from that, and iam guessing from your post that that baht is coming from euroz.. anyways as someone said maybe education is the best thing for now, do well in school in this area and then move to somewhere bigger to get better schooling in the future.

  5. i had a near full passport 1 page left and then 1 spot left on an almost full page.. traveling thru US to get back to canada... i wanted him to stamp the small entry stamp on the near full page, I asked him " hey can you stamp this page cause its almost full and i .. " and he interrupted with "THIS PAGE? hahahah sure !" and smashed it down on the fresh page and laughed at my face and threw my passport at me.. ugh i still remember choking back the bile i almost spit in his face. Oh well ! Now i dont travel through America anymore :o

  6. i ve seen ตอแหล applied to things more then just talking like say.. physical actions, say if some one is trying to do some crazy dance moves when they actually are not a dancer and are just joking kinda thing i have heard ตอแหล a lot in situations like that and similar ie trying to sing kinda thing. Also although it might be a bad word its also very popular between friends and relaxed atmospheres, but obviously foreigners should really pick their spots when using any kind of impolite stuff... younger people love it though, first thing i heard when hanging out with some of my friends from university is all the worst words and phrases in the language.. and from the girls no less..

  7. another example is farang who take so much pride in telling you a story about slipping a cop money. they probably could have recieved the same result without a kickback. i think it makes them feel like they are in a movie or something.

    haha ^

anyways its good for people to be aware of these types of things anyway, especially as its pretty easy to stake out an ATM machine and wait for people to take out a lot of money and also scope out what pocket it goes into.

  8. Hey.. I am curious if there is a way to add credit or something similar to take the worry out of paying monthly elec // water bills for a house up in Khonkaen.. obviously the easy logical step is a direct deposit sorta setup through the bank although i tried this once and it didnt work and tried again and everyone told me, ok maybe it will work in a few months. Maybe this is a KK thing, i am not really sure, but i have lost a lot of faith in the direct deposit system.. unless someone specifically knows a good idea to fastrack it.. like pay off everyone at the bank and the utilities.. hmm sounds pricey.. anyways i tried to just add a some credit when i paid the bills at 7-11 before but its not possible to do.. maybe some way to setup it up through a credit/atm card or pay through the atm even though i dont have the bills ? Thing is i dont live in KK even though i am usually in bkk so it makes it a hassle.. right now friends just pay it for me but i really REALLY dont like rely on other people for this type of stuff. Any help would be heartwarming <3

  9. yum ma muang for sure.. this pic is about medium spicy, but i had to consider the people who were eating with me when i made it - they arent in to spice.

Also i am really into som dtum (thai) and lately i ve been getting down with dtum thai gai yang.. very nice.. but who can forget the Laab family ? Laab moo ( and Laab moo tod and Laab gai yaang) although Laab dishes are rarely spicy mainly people the people who make then usually dont add prik thai and always seem to just use prik bon ( dried chili powder )

Although i love the yum mango, you never ever go wrong with the class dtum thai.. especially if you dont put in palm sugar, wow can really bring the heat out. I really dont mind dtum Lao either but i would say i definitely prefer dtum Thai.

ps.. just wanna note how much i hate writing and reading the names of Thai dishes in English.. just doesnt do them justice.

  10. Guru is horrendous and is good for laughs only ( my opinion ) and the mixed foreigner/thais loves to talk about themselves like that and display their western lifestyles.

I think that Thai-Chinese people get more attention in newspapers and are more common to be famous / models / signers / tv stars etc.. The look is popular right now and if you have money to start then you can go a lot farther.. for example Petch (forget family name) the singer who put out the album Lets talk about love.. his father owns Bangkok University and the family has some money.. his brother got a Ferrari, and he got to make some cds... although he at least broke even pretty much on that.

I dont think one is more Thai then the other.. Thai-Chinese have been here for a long time just as Thai-Lao/Khmer have been prevalent in the North-East for a very long time as well, i have no clue about dates or numbers or shit like that.. I would definitely say that Thai-Chinese and Thai-Lao/Khmer are more Thai then someone who is say Thai Indian or Thai - Foreigner, mostly because the blood line has been in the country for a longer period of time.. that being said though its also like this, if you have Thai blood then your a Thai citizen.. what i mean is that if your ethnically Asian then you will appear to be more Thai then someone who is mixed with a ethnicity outside of Oriental Asia.. The funny thing is how the people who leave here see each other.. (Lots of)People in bangkok (born here) usually look down on the North East, the NE have the population so they can sway elections and also prove a huge labor supply for bkk. I know Thai (Siamese) people who hate Isaan people and hate Thai-Chinese people and even other Thais, and i know Isaan people who are pretty laid back as far as that kind of thing goes, and i know lots of Thai-Chinese people who also really look down on Lao people..

Guru really seems to try hard to talk about themselves, from what i've gathered its just some rich Thais ( and look-kreung and Thai-Indian people) who some how got a free magazine to run.

oh well hopefully this post makes sense

  11. Mods, can we not call it a day on these parallel threads about taxi's motorbike taxi's and purveyors of people in any shape or form? It's getting ridiculous. If every poster posted his/her bad encounter with a taxi (or whatever) in real time, flood control would be constantly engaged and we'd have to rename Thaivisa to Thaitaxi!

    ^^^^^^^^^^^

  12. just read what i wrote.. wasnt very descriptive forgot to say that .

    A. me and the other guy are both in a degree seeking 4 year university program at university

    B. we are both in the same program and both 1st year and 1st semester.

Its not a big deal but just curious, it could just boil down to i am on a fresh passport at the moment with only my ed visa while my friend has older voa stamps, trips to cambo and has been on a non-imm B before. Could be as simple as that, was just weird cause they marked him as a year then x'd it out and put 6 months.. the uni told me i would get 6 mths anyway, so i was a bit surprised to get a year. Oh well just curious.

  13. ok to make a long story short me and a friend of mine from school both went for extensions on our non imm ED visas ( mine was single entry, his i believe is multi entry but not sure..)

i went last thursday in bkk on canadian passport, received 1 year.

he went last friday on south african passport, received 6 months, although he had originally had a one year stamp that they crossed out and replaced with a 6 mth stamp.

I am happy with my 1 year but i am curious about this situation.

  14. heard a ton about this movie while i was doing some commercial/film work, but didnt know it was called Pinksville .. just found out it has bruce willis in it and is about the 68 My Lai massacre.. wow could be a good movie, hopefully oliver stone doesnt hold back and make some ridiculous shit like 9/11 movie.. jesus

  15. I hope so.. i am kinda new to bkk and cant even imagine it without the current routes.. Hopefully they keep pushing full steam ahead for the extensions of the current lines along with the construction of new lines.

I am confused to what just got approved recently, the new MRT line, i think its the red line? not sure, anyone shed some light on this?
