  1. I figured that was sure to happen. The THB was already way overvalued under suspicious circumstances, now the weakening USD will make the THB even more overvalued. It really sucks if you are depending on a USD pension, or income while living in Thailand. On the other hand, if you have excess THB somewhere like in a bank and (don't need it) transfer the excess back to a foreign account - or wait until the next US monetary policy committee meeting for an even better deal.
  2. George Carlin - hands down. On stage and recorded - "The American Dream". RIP George. Wish you were here now!
  3. So is this doctor saying that a newborn to a mother who is an Hep-B carrier (chronic - she has no antibodies), often herself contracted from her own mother at birth (without being immunized) - that mother's newborn should not be immunized immediately? If that's your understanding, then why?
  4. Speaking of poor water management - which is an ongoing thing in Thailand - do you think they learned anything from the 2011 devastating floods (and took any action based upon that)?
  5. At least two of the other big banks I have accounts with (SCB and Kasikorn) ditched web banking some time ago. It is more secure on your phone app with facial recognition (as others pointed out). But I agree with you about the (possibly serious) downside of having only one remote access to accounts. What if you lose your phone when you are traveling in another country? You can phone the call center I guess to make a transfer or pay a bill. But that's not really the solution.
  6. Right. I remember they came just about puddle deep to Saphan Kwai and stopped there. However, people living close to the river (other side, but not on 'downtown') side were flooded to the second floor. Some were Thai colleagues.
  7. There is now no government either, unfortunately. They've disenfranchised themselves in Congress and defer all governing to 'Dear Leader'
  8. I find it almost funny that Lyle Robinson comes from a right-wing machine-gun-toting family, and only switches sides when Charlie Kirk starts dissing transexuals, something the right-wing Robinson kid didn't like because he was in a reach-around relationship. How does the right-wing square all of this constantly moving target? They don't of course. What comes around. Som nam na, etc.
  9. This is actually aimed at the OP. Are you just a bit thick or is this just a wind-up? What do you call the guy who dressed up as a cop, went to the homes of two Democrat politicians - with a gun fully planning to shoot all of them. At one place he killed the politician and her husband - and their dog FFS. So are you saying this guy was not a fascist terrorist? There's a whole list of these whackos. How can you be so naive?
  10. For those that don't know... Abhisit was installed as the PM with his (laughably named) Democratic party stitched together by the coup leaders that deposed a majority elected people's government and forced/coerced members of that majority government to elope to the Democrats. Abhisit has an infamous quote after the 80-90 unarmed Red Shirts were gunned down in Rathcaprasong as saying to foreign media "I'm sorry that "HAD" to happen." Don't forget, don't accept.
  11. ...and how many actually watched it? Any of it? Even with my VPN pointed at UK I can't access it. I'm not suggesting it's good or bad, but if most of these posters didn't even watch it.. well...
  12. It's been nearly 14 years since many in Bangkok and surrounding areas needed to flee their homes/offices due to the Great Flood of 2011. Are we due for another one this year? It's only mid-September, but already Thai news reports this week warn that the Royal Irrigation Department is planning to open flood gates from certain dams as they reach their highwater marks. As September and October are usually the months with heaviest rain in Bangkok, and while this September has maintained that scenario, what's in store by end of October? Any bets (or anyone with real knowledge about what may be in store)?
  13. Aside from the trailer, I couldn't watch it - even with a VPN pointed at UK it knew I wasn't in its broadcast region. So I guess everyone that is defending this or that has watched the series?
  14. Apologies if I missed an earlier post, but whhat are you referring to? The 'on-the-day' 100-baht update that must be done at a teller and not an ATM? The one you do AFTER you received the bank statement printed at the counter (like a day earlier) plus the letter of ownership of account? Or are you referring to trying to update the bank book for the previous 12 months at the ATM to show immigration?
  15. Gotta wonder though if that 2 year moratorium on no-tax repatriation of ovserseas money is going ahead. Did it ever get Royal Ascent?
  16. Well, I can only hope the online 'chats with an assistant' get better than they are now. I mean they are on every website we encounter. And of course, like you say, they can almost never answer a question - no matter how many times you simplify the question and ask it in different ways, it ends up saying: 'so you have a question about your account. Is that correct?' "YES" 'Okay, please try again.' - and on it goes and you never get a useful answer.
  17. Yes. What happens if you are traveling for several weeks and your mobile is lost or stolen? How do you pay rent or bills back home, or transfer funds? Phone bank I guess?
  18. After 4 months without a haircut, I'm surprised your barber even recognizes you..
  19. I've never had the urge to live in a small village far from the bright lights. I know it's much cheaper, and you can build a nice place with all the modern cons for a relatively good price. But once you walk out the front (or side) door onto the dirt or potholed soi in the village - there's little to do but watch the soi dogs trot by. I go squirly after just a few days at my wife's place up country - fortunately it's in a peri-urban area and I usually find some excuse to stay in a hotel in the nearby big city 20 minutes away. Yeah, yeah. To each his own - I fully get that.
  20. Also, your experience at the (redacted) private joint unfortunately mirrors that of others. Pitching medical services like a Central Midnight Sale mainly to foreigners in English, Arabic, Chinese, etc., should raise a red flag - but for a newbee it's more familiar and comforting I guess to go to these places. Over many years I have been to quite a few hospitals for various treatment - I stick mostly to one that is probably considered a second tier private hospital in Bangkok - but that's because a few of the doctors I see there are very good IMO, not because it's slightly cheaper, though it is that too. And they have most of my records. I think many others on this forum in Bangkok who have lived here more than 5-10 years will have eventually realized that going to, what I will cal lthe 'Big Three' private joints doesn't mean they'll get better care or see better doctors, it just means they will pay more - with one place in particular notorious (anecdotaly) for running up the bill with additional tests that were at least questionnable. Like others, I learned to search for and find doctors who were well-experienced in various fields (that I needed) and I would find out where they worked, and go the place they worked 'most often' - often at lesser know private hospitals and government ones (though many might also work one day a week at the Big Three). This would often cost much less. It takes research and asking others, but it's worth it - not just monetarily - but health-wise too - which is the most important thing in my books. It's the good doctors I'm after, not the big name hospitals or even some of the impressive Thai titles (like Prof Dr, Pol. Gen. Assoc Prof Dr., etc) - though some of them are very good doctors too
  21. I thought similar. Here's a case where the professional first doctor diagnosed the problem, interpreted the imaging correcetly, and gave you honest advice and guidance to go to a place with better facilities for the complicated fracture, instead of trying to do it there. Kudos to him.
  22. They have taken over the famous RCA entertainment strip in Bangkok - that's pretty clear.
