  1. All TGs are Thai.  And all BGs work in bars.  And they are all f......female.  I hate to inform you, but this is true.

My point was that not all 'tg's' are the same and not all 'bg's' are the same. We should not label people in such sweeping ways but consider them as individuals.

Several recent posts in this thread seem to assume that lying and dishonesty are unique to parts of Asia. Or is it that some people believe that 'truth and honesty' are unique to the West? Truth is often a very personal matter and depends on our own perceptions. For example, some people believe that Bush and Blair told the truth about the need to invade Iraq, at least to the extent that they repeated what their own intelligence agencies had told them. Other people think that they are incurable liars. With the limited amount of factual knowledge available to most of us, we each can only make our own assumptions about which is the truth.

zzap has made an excellent point:

'There are more important values than telling the truth- i.e. saving face, protecting others and working towards the higher goal of longterm harmony. It's not always ill-will.

A pushy, investigative attitude will get you no-where!'

Accept that Thailand has a different culture from the ones in which most of us were raised. If you want to be there, you will be happier if you go along with that view rather than try to change things.

  2. A friend has told me that McD's have a secret breeding ground somewhere in the African bush where they are experimenting with genetic modification to wild animals. Market research has indicated that Western palates will soon tire of their traditional meats and they want to develop new flavours and new sources of meat. Apparently, they have the go-ahead to factory farm species that are not yet threatened with extinction.

The giraffe is the animal that appeals the McD's the most because its vegetarian diet, taken from high off the ground where it is less soiled by other animal life, makes its flesh particularly tasty. The potential was spotted by high fliers from Harvard and is not, according to McD's university in Finchley Central, some head in the clouds or pie in the sky idea.

The only drawback with a giraffe is that, despite its height, it doesn't have much flesh. However, this is smaller than the drawback of an elephant, the second species on McD's list. So, genetics experts have been secretly lacing giraffes' diets with steroids and other body bulding chemicals and are almost ready to start 'harvesting'.

My friend has managed to get hold of a pic. of a modified giraffe which I have attached for members to see. Mmmmmm, looks tasty!

  3. The Dude took a trip from his US home to England in the summer of 1979 to see a friend and attend a rather large Led Zeppelin concert at Knebworth.

It's scary to learn that you were so close to me and I didn't know! :o

I understand that any part of the carcase can be called 'chicken' or 'beef' as appropriate. So, it's anyone's guess what actually goes into some of these meals. McD's seem to be cutting back on their packaging of late and that can sometimes make things in the car a bit messy. A good thing about KFC, though, is that they give you a box to put your greasy bone into when you're finished eating.

  4. If you don't trust the person that you are with, whatever the nationality, then go away and find someone that you can trust. No-one lies because of his or her nationality.

Oh, and can we stop calling people 'tg' and 'bg', please? Such terms suggest that people fit into stereotypes ('all tg's lie'). Such generalisations may seem to make the world simpler to deal with but they are just not true. I also think that such abbreviations are a sign of disrespect in that we are saying the subject is so unimportant to us that we cannot be bothered to write the name or description in full.

  5. I agree with the OP. Wars are usually about protecting commercial interests; that's why we see images of armed forces personnel rushing to protect oil pipelines while innocent civilians are blown to pieces elsewhere. Thailand suffered during WWII only because one country wanted access across it to reach another country so that it could take military, political and economic control.

However, there are other reasons for some wars that we may regard as more acceptable. If the Allies had not resisted Hitler's advances in Europe, many more innocent lives would have been lost. I dare say that very few Thai wives would be living in Europe today. Having said that, WWII would not have even been possible if the world's major banks had not funded (and profited from) the arming of both sides.

I cannot agree that the observance of Remebrance or Veterans' Day is hypocritical. We each have our own reasons for observing it. My reasons are:

    1. To honour the lives of those who made sacrifices believing that they were for the good of their own countries and for humanity.

    2. To reflect on how different the lives of my relatives and me might have been if there had been no wars - no killings, no maimings, no bombings of my home town.

I abhor the greedy, manipulative architects of war but I respect the trusting and innocent people who laid down their lives for what the were told was a just cause.

Compare the attitude of many Thais with the greedy attitude of the natives of certain Western states. Also note how many wars those states have involved themselves in compared with Thailand.

  6. Do we remember?

I shall observe the silence and feel quite humble. I'm not sure that I could endure what many of those guys went through. There have been numerous ageist remarks made on this Forum recently. Perhaps, just for today (and Sunday in the UK) at least, we can all take some time to show respect for what the very oldest members of today's society did for their fellows - and maybe consider what their countries may or may not have done for them in return.

  7. Hi,

I used to eat lobster at Ratchada "Por koong po", but do you know any other place to have it?

And if I want to eat lobster at home, where is the market to buy it?

    Thanks

    !

There's a fish restaurant out along Ramkamhaeng Road, just past Big C and on the other side. Can't say I've eaten lobster there but the langostines are fine.

    13 Coins?

Poa Gung Pao, I am reliably informed. Do you know it?

I don't eat lobster in the UK ('home') unless someone else is paying!

The best lobster that I have ever tasted was in Restaurante Combarro, Calle Reine Mercedes, Madrid. Kept live until selected, of course. Fortunately, I didn't have to pay for those meals either! In fact, Madrid is full of really good fish restaurants.

  9. There's nothing new in this. Hollywood has been rewriting world history for decades.

We can't be sure that the present, conventional view of history is accurate and so a review would, perhaps, be appropriate. History books are written by fallible human beings using their own subjective imterpretation of the facts available to them at the time. If we weren't prepared to consider new information, we might still be scared of falling off the edge of the world.

A reasonable and justifiable amendment of political history that avoids future loss of life without compromising anyone's personal rights or freedom seems worth considering.

  10. OK, OK, sorry 'bout that.

When I first saw the shot of the USS Arizona...didn't catch the caption 'till it was posted.

    :o

And 'it' started in 1939 - as my Uncle would have been able to tell you if he hadn't been killed in 1940!

Perhaps you would ask the Moderators to remove the image and captions, please. It has been repeated several times now and looks garish and offensive.

    Thanks.

  11. What makes you such an expert, I'm 67 have travelled the world as an Airline pilot, I love coming to Thailand, my favorite country, and perhaps at times I make a fool out of myself, but I enjoy doing it, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. :o

And very pretty you look too - especially for a 67 year old. I must get up the the flight deck next time I fly. :D

  12. In Hertfordshire:

    1. St Albans market has a useful Chinese stall.

    2. Stevenage indoor market has a great veg. stall that sells Thai stuff and also canned produce and sauces. Very good.

Also, Mill Road in Cambridge has Indian and Chinese shops that carry Thai food.

By the way, your clock's showing Thai time rather than GMT! :o

  13. please could any one tell me where i can buy some thai food i mean proper braded thai food, my wife has just come to england and sainsbury,s and tesco,s have ok vegtables and bits. but is there any where that we can buy thai food shops or markets any thing.  thanx  :o

If you're in the UK, why is your 'local time' 7 hours adrift from GMT?

  14. Just want to know how Thai people will react while I introduce my GF being a Transgendered.]

    KR Alex

You probably won't have to much of a problem in LOS because people either won't mind or will be too polite to express or otherwise show any prejudice. Other countries may be different.

I hope that there's not too big an age difference between you, though. You may have seen from other current threads that that really does upset some people!! :o

  15. Has it ever occured to you that the 15 year old that you assume the oldie is screwing may actually be his grand daughter? The next time you see an oldie and a child walking down the street hand in hand just, for one minute, allow your bigotry to assume that they might be family rather than customer and client. Some of you people are puke-worthy  :D

Actually, endure, that's exactly the problem we face every day. We're the targets of that bigotry and having a bunch of old farts cavorting around RE-ENFORCING that stereotype doesn't exactly make our life any easier.

The other day, I was at the hospital and had the opportunity to witness an exchange that is sadly all to common in this country.

A pretty young Thai-looking woman (maybe 22) and a much farang older gentleman (maybe 50ish) approached the counter and attempted to make an appointment for the young woman. The nurses there essentially snubbed them and went about their business, probably assuming that they were in a client/working-girl relationship and therefore deserved second-class treatment.

It wasn't until they produced ID proving that they were father and daughter that the staff actually brightened up a bit and started to be genuinely helpful.

So, yes, it's all fine and good for some old fart to chase around girls 1/3rd his age, but let's not kid ourselves, that kind of behavior is NOT acceptable in normal Thai culture, and so (fair or not) it DOES paint the rest of us with that same brush.

You're absolutely right that people should not automatically assume that an old man and a younger woman are client and working-girl, but given the ABUNDANT evidence of that kind of behavior in many parts of Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya, it's understandable why many people do make that assumption.

And let's face it. Most Thais don't like that kind of public behavior. They TOLERATE it, but they don't like it.

And so many of us are forced to "prove" we're not like that before we can interact with people in "normal" society.

This may be an Adult Disneyland for some people, but some of us do live here, and when we're sitting on the Skytrain with our wives and/or families, it's kinda annoying to get lumped into the same group as the flip-flop wearing beachball and his pay-by-the-hour "girlfriend".

Now be fair about this young fella-me-lad. :D It's not just the oldies who are seen with what you call a 'working girl'. In any case, you may sometimes be making the wrong assumption about their relationship. My experience is that age difference between partners is not an issue with Thais and my wife confirms that. Whether or not the contractual arrangement may offend Thais in general I'm not sure. I do, however, suggest that you take care when you comment on the particular arrangements that offend you. I personally know of no such couples but I understand that many farang, of all ages, have met and married 'working girls' and are very happy. If you are a family man, why do you think that Thais 'lump' you with the farang who have 'pay-by-the-hour girlfriends'?

Whenever I feel a prejudice welling up to the surface, I remind myself that we all have to find our way in the world as best we can with the skills and experience that we are given. When I walk around MBK, I usually see farang whose physical appearance I find quite repelling, but who am I to judge them? I have no more right than do the farang women who cast a judgemental eye over me and my wife.

I accept, of course, that some older farang behave badly according to the rules of one person or another. But, then so do farang of all other age groups. And they do it all over the world. Boy, I thought that it was the old who were reactionary and critical. The constant poking at oldies at the moment is getting just a bit tiresome. They have the same right to be what they want as do people of any other age. They have a great deal to offer society and have had either the skill or good fortune to achieve what many young folk will not; they have survived decades of work, traumas, losses and disasters more or less in tact. Now they want to play until they drop their teeth into the glass for the last time. Good luck to them and I hope that as many young bucks as possible have the same opportunity - because you will all find that if and when when you also become oldies you won't want to give up on life either. :o

  16. There are some very interesting views in this thread about how old guys should behave - probably posted by young guys who don't like to be told how to live their own lives. :D Wouldn't it be interesting to see how you young chaps live your lives if and when you reach middle and old age yourselves? Perhaps your views will mature with age.

Where is it, by the way, that all of these old folk live who are constantly drunk and whoring? The older farang that I meet are busy enjoying family lives, creating homes and enjoying their drink in moderation. There must be a parallel universe! :o
