  1. I just called Bangkok Bank's CS number, 1333, and after being put on hold "forever", I got through. According to them, the Banks will only be closed on Monday and will be open on Tuesday. The branches in the malls will not close and will have normal hours on all days. Should have known better and called them in the first place rather than getting an "opinion" poll here!

There's no need to adopt that attitude. People were trying to help you.

Sorry I offended you, but I find that its best to remain silent if you don't really know the answer. Just read my motto. Butr if everybody did that here TV would go "tits up"!

    You didn't offend me.

I prefaced my reply with 'I'm told', wishing to pass on what I could but indicating that I wasn't sure. If you don't want that kind of response, Google away and don't ask on a forum.

  3. Plenty of confusing information between the headlines and the texts.

Still, it's still sad to read about the demise of this young man after a night out.

Can't believe posters are swinging handbags over the technicality of his citizenship.

The word is 'accuracy', not 'technicality'. As I just wrote, respect for the poor guy.

  4. A sad event.

By the by, if he was from Northern Ireland he wasn't British:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Britain

Where were you brought up? The full title is the 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island' so that makes him British mo...on

The UK includes Great Britain. Great Britain is the island containing England, Scotland and Wales. The UK is Great Britain plus Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

Do read the link - properly.

  5. I wondered about that too loong ,, maybe meant to be bamboo don't like too much rain or flooding,, although I'm certainly no expert on bamboo, we're just trying to learn as we go, I'm sure I read somewhere that although established bamboo is unlikely to be killed off by a bit of flooding, too much water in the soil may restrict the growth of new shoots

A few years ago, my wife's bamboo plantation was under a foot or more of flood water for a week or two without damage.

Perhaps he was referring to either the shoots or stored cut stems.

  6. Yes, they are brokers, which is what the OP asked for (Insurance agency).

I understand two completely different things by "broker" and "agency".

An agency is the local office of an insurance company. It deals with claims and exclusively sells its own products. It sends out representatives to accidents.

A broker arranges cover from many different insurance companies in return for commission. It does not pay claims (though a good one may assist the client who is making a claim, and then forward the claim form to the insurer).

Thanks for the explanation. Where I come from the 2 words broker and agent were used for the same thing, the only difference being a broker dealt in commercial risks and an agent in personal lines. But both working independently of the insurance company, just as the broker you describe.

In some countries, regulation has defined and clarified the difference between agent and broker. Regulations are often more or less the same for commercial and personal lines now with those for personal lines being more stringent as regards disclosure of insurers' terms. UK law clearly defines the difference between a broker and an agent.

An agent may be either an independent company or person or one representing one or very few insurance companies. some may be directly employed by an insurance company. They cannot offer objective advice and are often more focussed on sales than finding the right product for each client. Banks, for example, are agents for either one insurer or a small selection and their employees are paid to push sales, not advice.

A broker will have an arrangement with as many insurers as his company sees fit with the aim of being able to offer clients a wide choice of similar products. His job is also to help the client make his choice and to help him subsequently with questions and any dispute with the insurer. That seems to be rarely the case with agents.

There are several good brokers in Thailand for all kinds of insurance and so there is no need to take the risk of either using an agent or going direct to an insurer. Additionally, there is nothing to gain by becoming one's own amateur broker when making a choice of product.

  8. I've asked several times where I can buy a scythe and even drawn pictures to explain. I was told each time that there are none here. It surprises me because they are such an obvious and better alternative to the long handled machete. The same goes for spades and garden forks.

  9. Quite often, perhaps because the conversation is not in Thai and the other person has a limited knowledge of English, the answer to a question is a literal one. If you ask whether the other building has rooms, then the literal answer is, 'Yes'. If you ask whether it has vacant rooms, then the answer may be different. You must word your questions very carefully in order to improve your chances of getting the answer you need.

  10. I am amazed that some of you believe Harry reached the top by hard work. Harry got where he is by birth, not ability, this is not jealousy, just old fashioned scepticism.

You are making an assumption there with no facts offered to back it up. Judging by his Uncle Edward's failure in the forces, I'm more inclined to the view that the Royals have to earn their stripes and wings the same as others do.

  11. What is regular price in Thailand of 1 kg arabica?

Best coffee I ever drink in my life in Thailand is at the coffee mania in Pattaya have 2 branch

Can also buy vaacum bags from northern Thailand , have friends in my homecountry with restaurants and coffee machines of 10000 euro and after he tried coffee mania he say cannot reach this quality!

Number 2 in my quality check Bon coffee

Number 3 doi Chang in central Pattaya but serve to hot!

Number 4 Starbucks but to expensive!

    Not deliciouses amazon coffee

Taste very bitter same then coffee world!

Segredo from italy was the most miserable. Coffee I ever drink!

The problem with Amazon, Coffee World and some others is that they don't do the job properly at the point of sale. Too much coffee is ground in one session and they don't apply enough pressure when they tamp down the grounds. They don't froth the milk correctly either.

  12. I'm no monarchist, especially as regards the dysfunctional British royal family, but I admire Harry for his dedication to the job, his forbearance when he was deliberately put in harm's way in Afghanistan and his determination to be an individual despite the pressures of his alleged royal background. He would give the monarchy a much needed lift if he ever became king but we know that will never happen.

  13. I showed them my UK bike license and did not have to do the theory or riding test

Me too. Just an eye and reaction test on a machine, lots of paperwork and copying, pay the fee and then queue for the photo and licence.

You will need to take a medical certificate with you, in case you don't already know that.

  14. My wife has a small plantation of bamboo that shoots all the year round.

Once you have four good stems, you can crop the shoots. After a couple of years, let four more stems grow and cut out the old ones. Water occasionally during the dry season.

You won't get rich on bamboo but the shoots sell very quickly. My wife often has offers for the whole of one crop.

Apart from that, encourage the guy in his attempt to do something useful.

  15. Many of the commercial brands pack their beans in vacuum bags. I'm sure it's not perfect but even when they're rather old, you can smell they are preserved somewhat at least. Then when exposed to air, of course, use them ASAP.

Coffee beans begin their demise the minute they come out of the roaster. A sealed Mylar bag helps, of course, but not much. Most of these bags are NOT vacuum sealed and there is air in the bag. It is the process of oxidation that lowers the quality of the bean. the Mylar will keep out moisture, which is important, but it will NOT prevent the degradation fo the bean from oxidation.

The bottom line is, if you want good coffee, it is stupid to gamble with the risk of old coffee from a store shelf -- especially when right out of the roaster options are available.

I quite agree with your last sentence provided that fresh roast is available. On the other hand, the so called fresh roasts that I used to buy weren't a match to Boncafe's sealed bag roasts.

Once the beans are in the hopper of the grinder, deterioration is more rapid. Once they are ground and left below the hopper the rate of deterioration increases further. The first coffee of the day is markedly different from the next for this reason. This is the mistake made by many coffee shops where the staff, not properly trained in the ways of a barista, grind a day are twos worth of beans in one go. Added to that, they don't tamp the ground beans properly either.

  16. Actually; there is nothing wrong in mentioning the company the insurance is with - since a positive experience there is no risk of "slander" smile.png

    Cheers!

Good! No need for the OPs continued coyness then.

This reminds me of a post I read some years ago on another forum where someone promoted an unregulated offshore investment business but wouldn't name it. Turned out he was the Thailand representative of that company but the need for secrecy escaped me.
