  1. I was bitten by a tick and manage to pull it out before it swelled with blood. I've captured the little monster in a plastic bag and it's crawling around so I think I got it it all. He looks just like the photo I found by googling "Thailand tick".

Although not specifically about ticks in Thailand most of the websites I've seen say if it hasn't had a full blood meal I probably don't have anything to worry about. If you've had experience with this specific species of tick in Thailand - can I just wait and see, or do I need to see a doctor to get some antibiotics to prevent Lyme or other ailments?

Before anyone else says it I'll beat you to the punchline. Yes of course it was most likely a Burmese tick that did the evil deed and not a Thai national smile.png .

    Thanks,

    W

  2. Since a bit of revenge seems to be part of your motive, find a cop and offer to split whatever he can get for you 50/50. You'll probably get at least some dough out of it, create a big pain in the ass for the other driver, and establish a friendship with a cop whom you can call on in the future.

If the other driver ups 1/2 the money to the cop to make the problem go away, you could always find yet another cop to give it his best shot 50/50. Could become a long term source of entertainment, and an interesting set of ThaiVisa posts.

    Have fun!

  3. The last few posters must be REALLY bad at arithmetic.. 18+1=19 and 9+1=10. Sure the first one can vote in the election in early 2017 but the 10 year old. No, not unless we have " citizens voting irrespective of age"

Errrrr...do you REALLY believe there will be elections in 2017? Now dat thar is funnie!

I'd guess my math - and elections in 2025 is closer to reality than one would hope. :-)

  4. Yeah, think we done all the stuff in town now but thanks anyway. Love the morning markets too. Found a really huge wholesale clothes and everything else market coming south into Khonkaen just before Makro on the left. Looks like all the local markets people buy their stock there.

You could try Nam Nao N/Park. It's about 130 kms south on the nmb 12 highway. Nice jungle walks to suit all levels. 3kms and up. Museum interesting. A huge collection of home made poachers guns etc. You can stay in a cabin overnight too. Welcome to Khon Kaen.

Thanks for the tip on Nam Nao. I need to be in Khon Khen for a few days and wondering about other places in the region - particularly nature, animals and hikes within 3-4 hours drive on Khon Khen...any great nature around Nong khai or Udon thani?

  5. I was told by Immigration three years ago that I needed to have 800,000 baht in the bank for six months prior to renewal. Three years ago I place 800,000 baht into an account, never used that account so no 'money in' nor 'money out' in these past years, and never had any issue with Immigration requesting any other financial information.

Noteworthy that your money has lost 20% of it's value (vs the US$) in those three years parked in a Thai bank. Seems like prices - particularly food prices - have increased almost as much in that time.

The efforts required to comply with the shifting goal posts at immigration are frustrating, and the many dis-incentives for foreign investments in Thailand will eventually bring more harm to the Thai economy. Clear laws, and a functioning and fair legal system are fundamental requirements for participating in the global economy. Duh.

  6. I was out for the evening to a Networking Christmas Party and had more than several drinks. Although relaxed, I still had the common sense to know I was over my limit so I decided to do something I've never done before - I took a taxi home.

Sure enough on the way home there was a police roadblock, but since I was in a taxi they waved it past and I arrived home safely without incident.

This situation is new to me because I had never driven a taxi before. I don't remember where I got it, and now that it's in my garage I don't know what to do with it.

If anyone wants to borrow the taxi please send me a private message and we'll work something out.

  7. Can anyone recommend a good spot to view the meteor showers near Chiang Mai?

A friend said he thinks the road to Doi Suthep is closed at night...does anyone know if that's true?

    Thanks,

    W

"According to Dr Saran Posayachinda, deputy director of the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, “Geminids Meteor Shower,” a phenomenon which takes place between December 4th – 17th every year, can be seen in Chiang Mai on the night of December 14th (8.30pm onwards), lasting until the next morning. It is expected that the Geminids Meteor Shower will have up to 120 meteors per hour, which will be seen clearly across the north-eastern part of the sky, weather permitting."

  8. Yes I do.

    attachicon.gifBike for Dad Map.jpg

It's basically starting North of town near the provincial government buildings, then goes into town via the Mae Rim road (Chotana), hits Chang Phuak Gate, clockwise around the moat via Thapae Gate, Chiang Mai Gate, left at Suan Dok Gate on to Suthep Road all the way to CMU, through CMU on to Huay Kaew Road turning East towards town again, then left up the Canal Road all the way to the Convention Center.

So best to avoid that whole area and approach downtown from the East, South East or South. If you can even get there.

Huge cluster#$*&% to do this on a weekday.

    Thank you!

  9. On the moat, as you pass Talaat Somphet, continue until the bend to the left. Just at the bend is some kind of motor cycle rental place or something. Just before that is a little shop that sells hair clippers. They have been in business forever and most barbers in town take their clippers there to be sharpened. The turn around is about 10-14 days as I recall. The guy who sharpens them is getting on in years and only comes one day a week. I take mine there every two years or so. Not expensive at all.

Edit: it's the corner where Moon Muang turns into Sriphoom

I wasn't able to find the shop...here's a google street view of that corner...could you please point out the shop you mean?

the link posted in the fourm doesn't include the street view data - please copy the entire string and paste into browser to get the full street view.

    thanks!

    Hi elektrified,

  11. Just what I need. 3000b is that including medical examination etc.?

    tanawat-clinic

Dr. Tanawat Vaseenon is an Orthopaedic Doctor at the Chiang Mai university hospital who has his own clinic. 053 945 544

It is on Thipanet Rd coming from the moat before you get to Wualai Rd (the silver road) maybe about 100yards give or take. It will be on the Right side of the road.

What he does is take impressions of your feet and sends them in with the shoes to get the inserts. I had two pair and was satisfied with them. 3,000 baht a pair. Not cheap. Maybe more now.

I visited Dr Tanawat's clinic and impressed with his care. The orthotic materials and the foam impression molds were the same as used in the USA when I purchased there. 3k baht for the inserts + 300 for the doctor visit. Only downside is a 3 week wait for the finished orthotics.

Thanks to all for the good advice!

  12. I've used custom orthotics for decades and they have typically lasted over 10-15 years with daily use. I normally own a couple of pair and move them from shoe to shoe without any problem.

The one caveat is that they do take up quite a bit of space in the shoe, so I have to buy put the orthotics in when purchasing shoes to be sure everything fits my foot.

In the USA I've purchased them at a specializing pharmacy that does everything from orthotics to prosthetic limbs. They seem to know what to do.
