hi'
to say things straight ... "McAfee coming with my com" is what we called forced sell, and it's limit legal!
unistall McAfee and install, either ; AVG7 FREE (grisoft.com), but you should take a look at this :
Avast FREE download Avast antivirus free
or even better : Bit Defender8 FREE (download Bitdefender 8 free
never run 2 antivirus together!
some might think (as I did years ago), that having a resident antivirus, and a second one not running in the backgrond but here for a second scan ...
useless !
choose a good one and stick to it
I run Bit Defender 9 and I'll never look back
for firewall, same!
choose one and stay with it.
2 soft seems to be on the top ;
Zone Alarm (free), and Sygate (free), but Sygate belongs to symantec(norton) now, so for update , it's a no no
but the firewall, either in version 5.5 or 5.6 runs nicely
you may still find it making a search ...
I do think that it's useless to talk about ZA as it's still the best firewall on the market
just pay attention, when install to ckeck the zonealarm free edition, not the pro one ...
if you have a routeur with a firewall integrated, you don't need any soft for firewall, the only thing you'll get is conflict!
and possibly no connection possible as every port would be blocked!
very safe but useless for internet
that's all what I have to say about that ...

Looks like the cd has a small sratch on it.
Going to have to take a trip back to pantip then.
So how should I partition my 250 gig hard drive? Should I split a 5 gig partition for windows and leave the rest alone? I might be doing some video editiing down the line, will this be better off on its own platter seperate from my applications and 40 gigs of music?
hi'
a 10gb for the C drive and then you can decide in the extended partition one or more sub partition
just like wallalai, I have on a pc, windoz in a 14bg primary partition, and one for data and one of 12gb for games
francois
ps; partitions are a basic safety rule for working!
only dummies store everything on the C, using my docs and this s*** stuffs
make your own classification for folders and don't accept windoz default!

Download and install the driver from the NVIDIA homepage: http://www.nvidia.com/page/home.html
Never use drivers provided by Windows.
hi'
right!
use only drivers provided by the manufacturer, the only exception is for old lpt printers.
n'vidia latest release is 84.21 whql.
francois
ps; forgot to say, uninstall existing driver before to install the n'vidia one, and you may have to do it through control panel/hardware, your pc will ask for reboot after uninstall, reboot and on the reboot, there will be a window, "a new harware ..blabla", bypass this, cancel it, and then install the n'vidia driver you just downloaded, around 20mb (20.9mb)
then set your own settings, take care about your screen refreshing rate, check that
the checkbox "hide the refresh rate your monotor can't do" or similar and set it to the max possible, if you see in the list best performing settings, take this one

hi'
in the situation you are it is required!!
I lived in Isaan where the electricity is far to be stable, use a ups for 2 reasons but the main one is that some ups(not all) have a voltage stabilizer and this is the most important, a stable voltage, electonics don't like electric fluctuation
you can get one with a stabilizer and let's say 5 to 10mn alive in case of power down, wich allow you to look for a candle and close everything properly or even on some lucky shot, you're about to shutdown and the power comes back, in anyway your computer is safe
some have a com linh to the computer, you may use this as you may know
the shape of batteries and power stuffs, look in control panel/display/properties/and sub menu ups.
francois
ps; it's quite cheap compared to the full price of your com
I do think that you may get one for a few thousand baths (avoid
Lemel name)

hi'
yesterday evening for the first time since crisis began, they talked about on the news in France ...
to say the prime minister of Thailand mr T Chinawatra resigned and won't be part of the next government, explaining that he was in a trouble because of high level corruption and they also show the mass of protesters in the street in BKK!
just once in all this time, as a simple news!
wil he step off for good, it's still a remaining question, what kind of role will he play?
on the dark side, in the shade and still directing the new pm as a puppet?
who knows?
wait and see

hi'
and you may look on LG side, they have descent 19", 8ms, and good quality of colour and contrast, nothing fancy on, just a good screen at a reasonnable price

hi'Not a happy camper.....He's too stressed...
He's welcome to join our thaivisa peace rally (note... that's rally, not party yet, sushi... )
OHMMMM>>>>>>
Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra looks grim faced as he leaves Government House in Bangkok, Thailand, Monday, April 3, 2006.

this is the face I was waiting for since a few weeks ... toxin loosing and his sad sick face !!

hi'
WRONG!!
just go into registry and set the path for program files on the partition you want and reboot, you'll see ...
if you plan to install all programs on another partition that the C one, you need to go into registry to change the partition letter for the programs installed!
and for the key, you know "search for"? "Programs Files" for the path
francois

hi'
Asked what the military would do about the matter, Gen Sonthi said: ''Just wait and see.''"It's time to bring law and order," Mr Thaksin said to journalists before speeding away from the Bang Plad polling station.looks ike a nice built up
snap election, toxin still here, army getting on the start of action, and some protesters(300), ask for 4 pad leaders to leave, who paid them?
anyone think that they went on their own decision? b******
WHO PAID THEM?
LOS is in real trouble!
a dictator who wants full power through "democratic" way, so it will be easier to walk on it later, and the army following like a sheep, greedy of power!
everyone knows that army in los has a large influence and used force badly not so long ago ...
just have to expect that toxin will be nothing after this election ...
BUT, who expect that he will do what he said, if the ballot give him a victory
even just of one vote, los is going to live a very troubled time ...
and they'll forget until the next time to show off...
I really believed mr sondhi could make something, illusion!
they will bury him with craps in order to stop a disturbing movement, and this is what they like to call democracy

I mistyped poll results earlier today. 34.5% of voters in Bangkok are going to vote for Thaksin, down from 46% a week earlier.
It looks like he's not going to get his 50% here to resign in peace, but Isan and the North will certainly give him enough votes to face the burden of staying and dealing with the mess.
On the other hand, he's got only 60% of votes in last elections - 19 mil vs 13 mil for the opposition parties. It's not unimaginable that 3 mil people have changed their minds since last year.
Hope Banharn knows that he's a mediator now. A week ago he refused.
hi'
don't be so sure about Isaan and north, stone head they are
they could vote right the opposite of what is expected and this would be fun!

hi'
first you don't need 2 antivirus, especialy wth norton!
you need to choose one or the other!
you can disable : java_jushed on sartup, go to control panel and in the java menu uncheck " check for update".
same for real player disable the update thing in the tolls menu/update.
this will be 2 less to load.
then uninstall spysweeper, it's useless and might be interfering in some other protection programs!
and from some source spysweeper could be a spyware by itself
then one line tells me that you must have an incorrect entry in the registry:
this one :
http://activex.microsoft.com/objects/ocget.dll
O17 -
O18 - Protocol: msnim - {828030A1-22C1-4009-854F-8E305202313F} - "C:\PROGRA~1\MSNMES~1\msgrapp.dll" (file missing)
you should not have : activex.microsoft, and this could some part of a malware ...
this seems supect to me, but I could be wrong ...
anyway, do as I said, and then reboot! and then get the tool for this pest
here : trojan zlob remover
take a look at the page download the tool and run it as indicated on the symantec site

hoping that it will help a bit

Does someone knows the meaning of "lifetime warranty" for RAM in Thailand.
Any experiences with dealing/exchanging the Ram?
hi'
keep the small boxes of you ram sticks, life time means it!
in 20 years if your ram is defective any brand will exchange it to you, except that in 20 years it won't be ram anymore may be some nano stuff
don't worry about ram, buy it, if it doesn't work bring it back it will be exchanged
francois
ps: a faulty ram is pretty rare but still saw some ...

hi'
is your system restore turned off on all drives?
and as everyone said highjackthis!
and stop to use IE

hi'
Next challenge will be how can i share folders with my other (windows ) Machines on the Wirless network....any ideas?you need to learn how to dance samba
samba, the unique platform to be in contact with windoz, read the how_to, you should have it install as client by default.
YaST again, and samba configuration ...
I leave the rest to you, you need to see by yourself, but don't worry, nothing impossible, may be a hint , write down the path of the windoz folder or drive you want to share respecting the linux denomination for the drive, hda, hdb etc ...
a lots of pages on the net about samba and it's configuration
francois
-
hi'
I noticed that some mention highjackthis, probably the only soft that can help you here, did you go to any antivirus site, and get a "cleaner' for this sh*t?
and if I were you, I would go for Bit Defender home edition version 9, the best!
francois
-
yes, it is strange that after updating , this occured...but i use this Laptop merely to try on Linux...so no real damage workwise...
what i find also strange, on suse 9.1 i am able to get easily connected to my Wlan (atheros Wireless LAN on my Laptop) ,with Suse 10 i didn't get it to work...
well i hope francois can help me here...
thanks in advance,
rcm
hi'
well, well ...
Suse 9.1 hmm hmm, I had some bugs, with YaST also
I can only confirm what you say, I found no way to repair it other than upgrade to version 10, and it's all working now, before it was closing or freezing randomly:)
the problem is; from which source did you download these updates, security only?, you could try to update available package ( or may be it's what you did)
did you try to check that it was installed alright?
which way did you do it?
security, patches you, all updates, else..?
can you make a search with YaST and see?
you need to update YaST alone and reboot X ...
or upgrade to version 10 and plug an usb wifi key before install, it should work, don't forget to disable the wifi you have on the laptop before install too, on the screen install or update, choose update
if nothing go well, well, as many of us many times(geez I can' count how many re-install I did before to get something, long way to learn when alone..), re-install the OS ...
keep your home partition and don't format it!
I'm doing an upgrade by now, downloading fast as usual
some pgp security stuff, image magic, amarok, and a kinda windos stuff, may be it'll be easier to share folders between the 2 OS ... I'll tell you
francois

hi meadish,
it' either the grafic circuit or the screen, laptop sceens don't last as long as desktop ones
did you try to plug your laptop to another screen?(ext one of course )

How Much RAM Do You Really Need? (from Tom's Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/13/how...eed/page12.html )Indeed, 1 GB of system memory will most likely be enough for the average user and for people.
It will allow you to play new games at their highest quality settings, given that you have an adequate processor and a powerful graphics solution.
You won't have to shut down non-critical applications when you want to play a game.
You can (accidentally) press the Windows button while in a game without dying from a stroke during the seconds it takes to read Windows back into system memory from the swap file.
If you go from 512 MB to 1 GB, you will notice the difference all the time. Starting up Photoshop while working with Word, an Internet browser, e-mail client and Acrobat Reader will go so much faster, and switching between the applications is a breeze.
Still there are situations where more than 1 GB is what you want.
If you are a professional user, you might need more than 1 GB for really heavy applications.
If you intend to do heavy multitasking, especially if you have more than one CPU or CPU core. Running RAM intensive games such as World of Warcraft, downloading files via high speed FTP or encrypted protocols, Bittorrent or any P2P program; decompressing large archives and playing large size video files in a window or on second monitor all at the same time can max out your system memory pretty fast - if your CPU can handle it.
Another question is about a Floppy Drive. Floppy Drives are quite cheap ~ THB 300.00. I'm not sure if USB Flash Drives are an adequate replacement for the Floppy Drive.
Which Flash Drive (probably of 1GB capacity) would you recommend?

hi'
they just forget to say that with 2gb of ram you don't need exchange file anymore, the system is running on memory and doing so run faster!
you don't loose the pagefile.sys, but it remains at the same size than your ram and never move, neither fragment!

the simpliest is, start, configuration panel/system and on the first window you'll see it's all written on, your windows version, your cpu, and your ram

disconnect from the net, disable your antivirus and go to C:\WINDOWS\history
and clean it all, also, go to control panel and under internt settings, clear cache even the so called offline stuff ...
and check the box saying check the page "everytime visited".
you may do this in safe mode logged as an admin.
then run ad_aware or something similar, still in safe mode and the reboot.
it should be better!
