  1. Maybe it was mid October, but the sun definately came out in November....in that case 2.5 1.5 - 2 more months of rain then, regardless it still sucks !(for some) smile.png

But it has to be noted that the closer you live to a mountain the more rain you will get, do any of you posting graphs live close to a mountain by chance?

I stayed on Huay Kaew road last year and it was wetter than other parts of the city from the rain that developed over the mountain range at Doi Suthep.

On the other side of the city there was much less rain. I remember this because i would have to go to the other side of town to paint my motorcycle.

I really hope it is Mid October, then i can go back sooner...the US is driving me nuts right now.

You don't give up, do you?

The weather data reported from Chiang Mai is normally, and definitely on the site that I pointed to, measured at the Thai Meteorological Office at Chiang Mai Airport (VTCC).

Last year, i.e. 2011, there were five days with rain between 20 October and the end of the year (two in October, two in November and one in December) with a total of 8.64 millimeters of rain. If last year is anything to go by, your "2½ months" would me more like 5 weeks!

  2. I said Fiamm because that was the brand I was looking for.

It turned out that PPS stocked another, a Hella from Germany.

They demonstrated it for me before I bought it, in an employee owned vehicle.

Dual horn, 400 MHz/500MHz, sounds like an S600 Mercedes car horn with a very wide dispersal area. Designed for urban car use, where there is a lot of background noise. But it is not irritating or over the top- just an emphatic and authoritative horn.

Of course, I will use this new horn with discretion. A very short tap, only when needed.

Any more, the Glock 9mm's will come out of the gloveboxes...rolleyes.gif

    The price was 950B, installed.

They gave me the Brio OEM car horn, which amazingly is a very beefy looking version of a motorcyle horn.

With a bit of fudging and Thai syle improvisation, Nat Honda on Huay Kaew Road installed my Honda Brio car horn on my Honda Wave 100.

    Brilliant. thumbsup.gif

And my apologies to the OP and others for being a bit off-topic.

Thanks a lot, McG! I'll be in to PPS tomorrow biggrin.png

  3. Apologies for dredging up an old thread, but thought it might be of value to anyone looking for automotive solar film/window tinting....

Went there today, got all side windows and rear hatchback glass on a new Honda Brio done for 3000 B.

That was for the excellent 3M solar film, with 7 yr guarantee.

PPS on Hang Dong Road is a top notch outfit, and I will be back tomorrow to replace the squeaky little car horn with a Fiamm big rig truck horn.

    thumbsup.gif

How much did you pay for the horn, including the work? You know what car I have, but the horn sounds like a Brio wink.png

  4. It is sad seeing the redshirts applying a tactic that is copied from the Nazi SA in the late 20s and early 30s (before they were purged by Hitler...). Now as then, the police stand by and watch crying.gif

I love this country and its people (well, most of them...) but I'm afraid that it is now so far down on the slippery slope that it might be too late to save.

  5. @kaptainrob, Ban Nai Fan is near the primary area I've been looking at (Nong Khwai) so easy for me to look at those communities. The places do look very amazing but we'll see what kind of a budget and needs we have. Ban Wang Tan as well looks like it might be the right compromise between access to the airport, City Center, and some other areas that I'd like to be close to. From what I can tell, I think I'll be looking south of CIty Center then. I do like the mountains so Nong Khwai or Ban Nai Fan (or anything around Mae Hia) look great to me.

Everyone, thanks so much for the feedback. It's been so much better than I expected.

Does the CM ThaiVisa group here ever do weekly or monthly meetups? I'm involved with CouchSurfing and saw they do a weekly meetup, but I must say that the ThaiVisa community is quite a bit more active it seems smile.png

Baan Nai Fun 2 (the one on Canal Road) is a terrific place, probably one of the nicest in/around Chiang Mai. However, I think you'll be hard put to find anything in there below 30,000+ THB/month. If that's within your budget, strongly recommended!

  6. Standart dinner situation, nothing to write about cheesy.gif

Why the hell carrie a shit gun like a Uzi around? It's as effective as a knife, you can't hit shit with, it unless you stand 2meters from the target, because of the short barrel and high rate of fire...well or of cause, if you fire it, while having dinner with people, you can hit them biggrin.png

It sounds like you don't have any first-hand experience of submachine guns. The UZI has a 10.2 inch barrel, i.e. longer than most pistols. I don't have any personal experience of firing the UZI, but extensive experience of the not dissimilar Swedish 'Carl Gustav M/45' ( http://en.wikipedia....arl_Gustav_M/45 ) which has an 8 inch barrel and the same rate of fire (600 rounds/min). To quote Wikipedia: 'The m/45 is fairly accurate up to 200 meters', which I can attest to.

One more quote from Wikipedia: 'The pistol grip is fitted with a grip safety, making it [i.e. the UZI] difficult to fire accidentally.'

  7. Sorry I don't know the name but there is a shop for glasses about two or three doors down from the UN Irish pub heading towards the moat.

If you don't know where the UN Irish pup is it is on the road inside the moat just across from the corner with Mikes burgers on it. Put your back to Mikes burgers cross the moat and some where around 500 or 600 feet you will find it. If you find the UN Irish pup you went to far. It is in a nice looking building and I believe they have paring in the back.

I am sure some one will be along with a name it is highly recommended.

Maybe Dave 2 has a picture of it.

The name is "Vision Center" and they do indeed have parking in back.

  8. Rest in Peace, Larry.

You provided a lot of help with good information when I first started considering moving to Chiang Mai. You were also the first to donate when we started collecting money for the Wat Pa Pao cat sanctuary. A fine man, you will be missed by more people than you ever thought.

  9. I did not know the red/white lines on the street border are meaning no parking zone.

What, you didn't learn that when you got your official motorbike license to drive legally?

    Guess we're all just lucky!

I have any driving license you can own on land, I know the rules but this one is clear new for me.

I'm impressed! Do you e.g. hold a Swedish license for driving a heavy truck with a heavy trailer? Can you tell me the sign that should be attached to the rear of such a heavy trailer? Do you know the sign that should be attached to the rear of any vehicle with four or more wheels that is not capable of a speed in excess of 30 km/h?

My point is that there is no global standard for traffic regulations. If you require all regulations to be identical to your home country, you'll need to stay there.

  10. Hi there, I was wondering if you could help me out, my husband and I are visiting Thailand from Jan 3rd / Feb 1st 2013, we fly to Bangkok. I have done loads of research on Chiang Mai in the last week and really fancy it for a week or so. However, my research doesn't seem to have been extensive enough as I have just read about the dangerous smoke pollution during the months Jan/April. Would you say it's not worth the risk.

In January, when you'll be here, pollution is normally quite low in Chiang Mai. E.g. Bangkok and Chon Buri (Pattaya) are usually considerably more polluted at that time. The bad time in Chiang Mai is most often from mid-February until the end of March. However, the pollution levels vary a lot between years depending on the weather.

  11. My apologies as I imagine this has been covered many times before, but I haven't managed to find the answer:

My permission to stay (O-A Retirement) expires September 18. My present passport expires August 20 2013, i.e. about a month before my next extension of stay would end. How would Immigration handle this:

    A/ Refuse my upcoming extension?

B/ Give me an extension until my passport expiry date, upon which I would have to start a new 1-year extension cycle?

C/ Give me an extension until my passport expiry date, which would then be extended until 18 September 2013 when I present a new passport?

Since my country's EU/Schengen passports are only valid for five years, alternatives A/ and B/ above would effectively reduce that to four years sad.png

  12. 'Consensus' points to Vision Center in Rajvitthi Rd, on the same side as UN Irish Pub but a little closer to the moat. Excellent products and service and, in my experience, never tries to oversell!
