  1. I live in Bangkok and I take a few times per week a taxi to Don Mueang and back.
As Rhijs mentioned it is indeed luck of draw. The taxi meter is mostly not the problem but nearly every time I fear for my life, most of them drive like crazy, totally irresponsible and this with very poorly maintained cars. And yes I have 20y experience driving a car in Thailand, the reason I take taxi is because there is no parking space available at Don Mueang. So to answer the question, mabe it is not worse than ever but for sure no improvement.

  2. It’s an attitude originating from the geographical location. Enough rain, no winters and plenty of food and a slow pace because of the heat. So money was never an issue, not important. But western influence made them want luxury, house, car, clothes etc..
So their hunger for money grows and to keep up they need paid jobs but instead many bury themselves with heavy debts.

  3. Dear OP, I was reading all the responses and advice but I can’t figure out what is wrong with the situation.

You pay well above average, you provide housing, motorcycle etc...

Maybe to remote? I have 40 Thai workers, and I also take good care of them. As one of the posters suggested, I also work with yearly bonus but I don’t pay all at the same time at the end of the year. I pay every year on the date they started, this to spread the risk they all leave at the same time. All my workers bought a car meanwhile (although they have housing at the site) because they have to pay back the loan they stay..

Increasing the salary won’t work but maybe provide TV and wifi which was very well appreciated by our workers.

You have to give them something that they can appreciate every day so if they leave they will be in a worse situation.

  4. The sad part is that once we reach the arse wiping situation we might not comprehend and just be a burden to others

Yes, this must be a difficult situation, but I think most of us cling to life and try to postpone the inevitable..it’s like when I was 20, I told myself never to become an old man of 60. Now that I passed this age It looks different from where I stand now. When you need help like arse whiping, one can decide there is still enought to live for and so we continue to postpone until the moment we are not capable anymore of making decisions or until the last breath.
I am afraid I also belong to this category, I have a lot of respect for people who can plan their end.

  5. I think you did nothing wrong, a lot of small construction and repair works are done the same way as you described.

People who blame you for not having a contract probably dont live here..

Try to call them using different phone nr.

If you dont know where they live and they dont respond, I would take the loss because all other options probably cost more.

  6. Some of the grumpies have real writers talent, it would be boring without them. They give color and dimension to this forum. Sometimes predictable like JT but most of them are on TV for so long they became part of the cast.

  7. I use Uber, I won't give these mafia men any of my money.  They are rude, dishonest, pushy, play dumb when you ask them to do anything out of their way # they are lazy.  Some are violent because they know that they won't be prosecuted in Thailand.  There are exceptions but the majority are not someone that I choose to do business with.  I don't need them to survive, they need us.  Motorcycle taxis are better if I were to use a taxi and those boys can drive!

    Is Uber legal in Thailand?

  8. I Iive in Bangkok for over 20y and I take several taxis per week often to Don Mueang. I can tell you that most of the taxi drivers are driving very dangerously with cars that are very poorly maintained. I really fear for my life. On the rare occasions I get a friendly responsible driver, I am so happy I give him at least 100thb tip. Grab taxi is no solution, first of all after reservation they always call you for confirmation why?? They sometimes find the way where to pick you up but seldom use gps to get to the destination. Thai drivers in general can’t read maps. So I do follow the OP’s concerns but as so many others already mentioned, the 50thb extra is normal and is mentioned on the ticket.

  9. First, it is important to decide if a patent is the best solution. If the product/ formula can be kept secret inhouse, better not patent. A patent becomes public and thus available for easy copy.
If you cannot hide the secret, you need patent. I work with a good professional patent bureau in Singapore.

  10. I came into the office and we had an aquarium at the reception. Nobody took care, water was green filter clogged, fish not happy...
So before going to lunch I told our staff to clean the aquarium very well. when I came back they were just removing the last stones from the bottom, glass was clean and fish flushed through the toilet..one of my first "ooh soooo sorry sir" misunderstandings.

  11. Did you ever see Thai people eating cockroaches? They do eat a lot of bugs, one looks very similar to a cockroach but it is actually a water beatle. As such probably cockroaces are edible but they do live in a filty contaminated environment plus there is also a chance they just ate some poison before being cought for consumption.

  12. Many years ago on a holiday (staying with a Western relative who had lived here a few years), a Big C or Tesco Lotus cashier 'waied' me as I was leaving the checkout.  I returned the wai, and the cashier was definitely taken aback.  Her look combined confusion/amusement/embarrassment - which left me confused !

Fortunately my relative was there and later explained why returning the wai confused her, and made me look like an amiable idiot.

Having now lived here a few years, its far easier to bow my head in response to a wai.  The only exceptions are when someone has helped me out or have been particularly nice in some way (particularly if they are elderly) - in which case I'll give a 'high' wai to express my gratitude.

Maybe her confusion had nothing to do with your wai?

  13. Why wai?  A proper 'farang' wai is no wai at all.  A head nod will suffice.

However, if you live here and interact with many Thais on a daily basis, it is worth knowing how to wai properly.  If you don't know how to wai proper, don't: you simply end up looking like an idiot, e.g., extending a high wai to a 5 year old.  Which is why if you don't know how to properly wai, default to a nod.

Again, returning a way will never make you look like an idiot. Of course children is a different matter, normally you never wai to children unless it is part of a play..

  14. In general, I am under the impression that it's considered ridiculous to return a wai to someone who is paid to wai the customers all day long, i.e. a store cashier, hotel doorman, etc.  Certainly don't see Thai people doing it.

I agree many Thai will not return their wai, my point was that returning a wai is ok and will not be considered an embarrassment. The examples you give are relevant and I have to agree that also for me this is borderline.

  15. I am talking about "returning" a wai, so how can this be inappropriate? As far as I know, thai people will always appreciate this more than no wai at all. I work with Thai people every day during the last 20 years, I just wanted to share this experience.
