You'd expect a certain amount of idiocy in a thread with such an open ended title... but four pictures of tanks, no one can do better than this? Sad...

Now, to the OP. GO VOLVO!

Having said that, I would be wary of anything like the V/S40 models of today. The Volvo reputation for 'solid' was forged in the 70's and 80's and some of those cars are still the best bet, if you an find a good one. I have personally rolled a 240DL 16 times along a highway and walked away from it. My father dropped his 164GL off a levy bank of 10 onto the roof and not only survived but drove the car home. I have owned an S40, I do not think much of them at all. They are a re-badged Mitsusbishi Magna with a few safety touches.

VW is also a solid craft, expensive, but since ou asked about 'safe' then they certainy qualify.

    Oz

16 Times! Are you sure! Get a bump on the head? They could never go fast enough.

The cops counted the dents in the highway so thats what they told me.... I was doing 160, the back rear tire blew and gravel on the side of the road did the rest. btw, they then charged me with reckless driving... could have done without that, but young dumb and....

    Oz

Yeah, bit tough being charged with reckless driving rolleyes.gif

Now if that were in Thailand you may have been able to run away! Why not - everyone else does. When in Rome do as the Romans do, as the saying goes.

  3. I always understood that the primary reason for prohibiting the use of mobile phones during flight was to prevent "swamping" of the cell towers below....................has that problem now been miraculously overcome? - or perhaps it was never a problem in the first place?

Ever placed your mobile phone on the dash board of your car, how does the radio behave? There is short range interference and that is what the airlines were concerned about. What they have done to fix it? I don't know.

I would suggest that it has never been a "problem" of recent years. Many farang countries now allowing use of electronic devices (certain stipulations) but I wonder if this will get thru to Asian airlines? Knowing (especially Thailand) denial of anything of betterment from farang countries. I understand that AirAsia are starting to trial WiFi on board aircraft. Interesting that a LCC is beating many full service carriers to that punch! But then again, look at the excellent management AirAsia has. Thai Airways take note!

  4. Only an idiot believes that democracy is important. It's an irrelevance - and far too many in the west have fallen for the lie.

What makes it even more shameful is that most westerners have convinced themselves they live in democracies - an idiotic stance, embarrassing to behold.

The only thing that matters in any society is the rule of law.

if that is your definition of idiot, then call me 'stu-peey'

    and proud of it.

I'll take democracy over the alternative any day of the week.

You've never lived in a democracy.

What is the proof of your assertion? Or is this just a meaningless or idiotic statement comment?

  5. I'd like to know what airline serves 100,000 baht per bottle wine and allows economy class customers to serve a boss who is in First Class.

If the story as any basis in truth then it got lost in translation.. like so many news stories.

VIP can preorder to be served special wines. The airline will comply if its worthwhile. If the fat bastard is into Bordeaux Petrus, e.g., cheap ones cost about Bt150,000. An expensive bottle costs well over Bt2,000,000. I have learned that rich people not deserving to be rich love buying expensive wines just for the price. You cannot imagine how little they know about wine. In a blind tasting, they would not be able to tell which one is the 500 Bt card box wine and which the 5,000 Bt decent Burgundy.

They just want to be Caligula, Nero, or Thaksin. 5 years hard labour on a hot rice field would help them (and us).

    Thai Airways.

Time to completely privatise that hotbed of corruption and inefficiency. Force the finance ministry to sell its shares to public over time until in owns less than 25% and I guarantee that these abuses will cease.

The shareholders will now pay for the "abuses" and not the tax payer? Thinking on that one, must remember not to become a shareholder.

  6. Would be nice to put a name with that story. Anyone have a clue as to who this upcountry offender might be?

Nicer would be if the dear General checks their bank accounts. Finds the corruption. Seize everything and put them in jail.

I dont think this is the solution.

I personally think absolution is the only reslistic way forward.

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

Absolution! How "christianlike". Are you joking? I hope so.

There are more than enough excuses going around without adding another.

The only change I can see is that a car trip from Nong Khai to Bangkok is done much smoother than before. Before the ROYAL Thai police were around every corner to catch people for speeding and other so-called offences. Now we do not see the police at all on this route. Why ??? I think they are not brave enough to continuing their practise, because the military will put them in jail if they try to extort anybody. That was their living before. Now I can drive how fast I want, no police, mai pen rai. But this means that if the new prime minister is serious and an honest man, he will kick out every policeman with rank over sergeant all over the country. Make a new police force from the bottom. The most corrupt people normal people are used to meet is the police officers and the guys at the desks in the ampeu.

Does "Now I can drive how fast I want" mean you go faster than legally allowed, if so you are breaking the law, the same as a corrupt cop would be.

Cruising speed above 100Kmph is just wasting fuel. Hmmm...what kind of people don't give a darn about law breaking and wasting resources?

  8. Just look at Australia within a month of being in power Bishop was under fire for travel rorts , they are not really needed as they only make our lives harder.

May be and the former party in power never did anything wrong?

Being a politician is about self-aggrandisement, well, at least for too many of them anywhere.

  9. money

    Easy money

    Unfortunately so true.

BUT there are many Thai who would like that to stop. and I know of some, from Isaan, who want vote buying payments and "direction" by village "headmen" stopped and for the people to be educated enough to understand more about politics and policies.

  10. Posted by Eric Loh: You said that the previous government answered to one which you later admitted that they subject to those who voted them into power. That's a contradiction.

When the previous government dissolved Parliment, they are giving back the power to the people whom they are answerable to. The people mandate who they want as leaders. If they don't performed as it happened previously, citizens spoke out, attract and organize supporters and demand a re-election. That's the democratic process.

If you support democracy with blatant corruption that is your choice - but many Thai people did not like that and fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on ones point of view) it took a military coup to bring that to an end at this time.

Sorry to burst your bubble. I don't support blatant corruption and it should take an election not a military coup to put an end to this. I hope you are not saying this because you are align to the Dem Party and that they can't win an election in a straight fight.

Don't take out of context - the keyword is "if".

Secondly, I do not "support" any of their political parties because too many of them are corrupt in practicing "democracy". Buying votes by direct payments to voters is hardly my idea of democracy.

  12. Until he cancel martial law, he is still authoritative and imposing his hard stance on the citizen who can't gather and express their opinion. Soft is never in his vocabulary as he answer to no one.

And the politicians before him answered to no one (except their financial backers) either! Eventually all will answer to someone.

Democracy should be for the good of all people, NOT just those who led the democracy at the expense of those who "voted" them into power.

I hope you realized that you contradict yourself in your two sentences.

    Two separate statements.

The first answering to your "he answer to know one."

The second is about how democracy could/should work. I do not see any "contradiction".

  13. First time EVER on a bike, no bike license I bet.....no sympathy....hopefully they and those like them learn before it's too late

How do you it was their first time on a bike?

How do you the car driver was not at fault?

No sympathy, hope you are in an accident one day and people tell you that. What on earth is wrong with you?

    Rhetorical comments by surfinglife perhaps?
