  1. Very unfortunate news. I am not a fan of The Thaiger with its fake author profiles and AI generated and completely ridicolously bombasticly written content that usually is of quite low journalistic quality. Recently we've seen AseanNow also start to post AI generated content. I don't have a problem with AI per-se as I use it myself, it's the dishonesty in its usage that rubs me the wrong way.
  2. I posted a link which has an explanation for newbies and also includes the math. You could use it as a refresher. I am surprised how someone who took statistics does not know the basics. But then again I interviewed someone last week for a job who also claimed to have taken a statistics course and didn't know the slightest bit about... well statistics. I don't know what some schools teach in their statisticics courses but it ain't statistics it seems.
  3. Jonny in Statistics a sample size of just over 1000 is usually enough to make statistically significant statements with low margin of error regardless of the population size. You choose a certain confidence (usually 95%) and then you get back a margin of error. One thing that has to be taken into account is the standard deviation in your results. The math formulas don't have the population size as variable in them which tells us the population size does not matter. The more often you conduct a random trial (a poll vote) the more smaller your window of possible results (margin of error) will get. Flip a coin 1000 times and you will be quite confident that even if you flipped it a trillion more times you'll get a 50/50 chance of head or tail. If you are interested to see how this works here's an article that's not bad: https://towardsdatascience.com/statistical-foundations-of-election-poll-c1fade2dce2e That's why you will see nearly every poll use a sample size of just over 1000. That's when the math says it's good enough. What you should be cautious about though is how a poll was conducted. E.g. the exact people they asked, the questions they asked and so on. That's where a lot of room for manipulation and mistake lies. That being said, it's not a great result when a poll conducted by Republicans shows Biden leading.
  4. You are either trolling or didn't read the article. The poll was canducted by a Rupublican pollster. Or you are saying the Republican pollster is a woke idiot. All of these are not great options.
  5. Newsflash for Liz Truss. That's the whole idea. So the government can't run rampant and do whatever they want without checks and balances. Calling for the abolishment of the Supreme Court is imho an attack on the foundations of the state. No wonder she supports someone who also attacked the foundations of his own state. These people are traitors and a real threat.
  6. Ah I didn't know they reduced nurses and ambulance driver salaries after the war started. They must have had no problems before. Must be also all government employees and not private companies then. Yep yep. I guess he tried to march towards Kyiv for fun then. Totally not interested in topling the elected government and taking control. If you let a bully do whatever he wants then he will take whatever he wants. It's not the first place that Putin wants to take and it wont be the last. It's pretty clear what he's been doing.
  7. I'd like girls to stop wearing sexy dresses. Or, they can keep poking the rapist bear, then lament what they've pretty much forced him to do.
  8. Haha the same story again by Thaksin as before through his proxy sister. Government borrows huge amount from his own bank. Just last time they at least pretended it would make money. This time it can't even make money, it just hands out money with questionable benefit and will probably not even increase taxes noticably. So the government is indebting itself towards itself. Sounds like a recipe for success.
  9. Of course Ukraine will fall without the support from the US and others. They would have fallen a lot earlier if it wasn't for support from western countries. But reality is that there was support. How many times now have there been "this is the end!" proclamations? It's also so weird how you @thaibeachlovers seem to want the Ukraine to lose. Why are you supporting Putin the warmonger?
  10. That could be but then there has to be a ruling on that. One third party country can't decide that's the case and act on their own accord. It is absurd. A third party can't just harm annothers embassy. That's why whenever an embassy's inviolability is breached other third parties jump in to condem the host country. If the system isn't respect by all parties then it's pointless. How do you know what they did inside the consulate? We only know who was in there. Would it have been OK for the US to attack the Ecuadorian embassy in London who was at some time giving refuge to Julian Assange? Why couldn't Israel kill them when outside these premises? It simply was a mistake to attack it.
  11. Of course China couldn't declare North Korea as being its Embassy. You can only declare something as a diplomatic mission inside a foreign country and with the permission of the host. Diplomatic missions also have specific duties and purposes. A whole country doesn't fit that requirement. The first sentence of Article 22, paragraph 1 speaks only about the inviolability. What you quoted in bold is part of several paragraphs mixed together. Your interpretation that an embassy is only protected from the receiving country but is fair game to third parties is absurd.
  12. Putins justifications never made any sense if one thinks about it for 5 seconds. He even strengthened NATO by pushing more countries to join and for existing members to increase defense spending. It's a sign of a twisted mind. Same for Iran. Just that Iran isn't as strong as Russia and knows they'd be pounded into dust in a full scale war. Both countries actually have quite some potential but it's completely wasted by their leaders who only know how to stir sht up instead of improving their own country. They only know how to scheme and make trouble.
  13. Article 22 of the Vienna Convention of Diplomatic Relations clearly states that the premises of the diplomatic mission are inviolable. It does not say inviolable by the host country. It is a convention that applies to all countries that ratified the treaty. That also applies to Israel. It would have been much smarter for Israel to bomb them when their targets were in some car or whatever. But I guess Israel doesn't care much anymore at this point.
  14. They are of course not private enterprises as they are run by a government and are the official diplomatic mission in a foreign state. They are not, contrary to popular belief (and wrongly stated also in this thread by some) sovereign territory of the sending country. They act under the juristiction of the host country. But the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations states that the host country may not enter the premises and there is an array of immunities granted. It's not uncommon that an embassy houses/shields who they like as you phrased. But there have been also a handful of instances where the host country has forcefully entered the premises.
  15. As suggested take your monitor to the hospital or clinic next time and compare there. Just a bit of a walk outside can increase your pulse significantly and that in turn influences your BP. You can not compare readings in completely different situations.
  16. That's the worst definition of a scooter I've seen. I guess my 260kg adventure bike is a scooter and the Click is not a scooter. Who knew 🙂
  17. Again, they both signed a treaty that recognized the borders and Russia breached it and started a war. Ah yes "you can be independent as long as you are doing what we say". I'm sorry but to support Russia and all the suffering and destruction they are causing... it's just sad. What do all these minute tidbits have to do with the fact that Taiwan wants to be left alone and doesn't want to be told by China what to do? China is acting like a jealous ex who can't let go. Look, you are moving goal posts all the time. You make claims which clearly are wrong like here where you claimed neither Russia nor China had troops thousands of kilometers from their shores and fighting some systems. They clearly do in Africa and Middle East. Same as you claimed Russia never signed a treaty recognizing Ukraines borders which clearly they did sign. Then you come back with some wishy-washy goal post moving nonsense and vague "search for information" non-references. It's not working. Funny. You do realize they used to be one country/empire on multiple occasions and got separated after wars yes?
  18. Well I guess you just missed all that they have done and are doing in Africa and the Middle East. The Hong Kong people wanted to be left alone. China has used force to crack down on dissidents. China has removed freedoms from Hong Kong citizens. That they write and speak Chinese does not mean China can take control. Austrians write and speak german so should Germany take control?
  19. My post edits are for correcting spelling mistakes. You can see that the timestamp of the edit is usually close to the post time. But dream up something else if it suits you. Murky arguments? They signed a freaking treaty! The disput was settled until Russia started a war and annexed parts of Ukraine. It's very simple. You are muddying the waters with vague claims. If you want to reference a specific article then just link it. Don't tell people to search for something. The voters of Taiwan are the only ones that matter when it comes to deciding what to do with Taiwan. It's none of Chinas voters nor anyone elses business.
  20. Oh great now you accuse me of being paid to post on Asean Now? I must have earned a lot of money in the past decade. Or maybe you are just talking out of your behind. It's funny how you think that I living in a neutral country and having no business with China or the US am so biased towards the west compared to you who is living or spending a lot of time in China is totally not influenced by chinese propaganda. You can find many posts of yours where you are praising China in various threads in recent years. Step back and try to see what's more likely. I am not a fan of the US and they definitely pulled some crap. But the point is they didn't annex anything while Russia and China did or are trying to. There is a very big difference with how or why someone is involved in a war. For example the US is definitely involved in the Russia/Ukraine war. So is Russia. There is a huge difference between the two involvements. This is completely misleading. Historically Taiwan has seen itself as the true China. What most people call now China is a different China. Taiwan does not see themselves as part of *that* China. That's blatantly obvious or the whole tension between China and Taiwan wouldn't exist! You are fully aware of this so by you twising it around you show your true colors. Ah yes, here we go.
  21. Let's be more specific and talk about invasion, annexation or being involved in territorial disputes in order to gain control of another country or parts of it ok? Russia has taken over Chechnya, Crimea and now Donbas. They've also done the first steps with splitting off Abkhazia and Ossetia from Georgia. China has gained complete control of Hong Kong and removed its freedoms by force. China has been or still is in territorial disputes with India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan. China has repeatedly threatened Taiwan with invasion to take over and merge them into China. The US? None.
  22. I see you ran out of arguments and propaganda talking points with only a silly smiley left. I guess getting yourself caught with your history pants down regarding the border treaty was a bit much. But hey, you're welcome 🙂
  23. Corrupting yourself and bending rules to please someone who doesn't want to play by them without good reason is not a good justification. Neither are any of Russias justifications for the invasion. Either there are rules or there aren't. The West don't want to end up like a corrupt country like Russia. Well you might want to look up the "Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation, and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation" signed by Russia and Ukraine in 1997 which settled the border question. Your claim that it hasn't been solved since 1991 is flat out wrong. Russia decided to violate the treaty when it started its war in 2014 and annexation of crimea. Sorry what? The US had troops in Taiwan before anything we call today a computer was even a thing. The US put troops there to stop Chinas continued efforts of fighting with Taiwan. They helped end the civil war. China doesn't want to let go and wants to crush the democracy and absorb Taiwan completely. The only thing stopping China from doing so is the threat of the US entering into war if China would pull the trigger on an invasion. Taiwan just wants to be left alone and live in peace. Why can't China allow that?
  24. So you are suggesting that some vague play on feelings and corrupting themselves and bend their rules would have been the right way to go about it. Playing it the russian way. Yea nope. It is purely on Putin to have fscked that up. What's so difficult to just play by the rules? He can't. It's not in his nature. He's a spy turned dictator. How can we even expect him to be a well meaning leader? Don't think NATO is shivering. If Russia would be so stupid as to attack any NATO country then that's the end of Russia. The size of and capabilities of the two are not even remotely similar. Russia is already struggling with Ukraine which is a thousand times easier target. In fact it has just exposed their own incapabilities and weekness. Putin even had one of his own men march on him and nearly got to Moscow. What a joke. One side claims there was such an understanding. The other side disagrees. And that's nothing new. If you really think that such a guarantee would be as important as to the breach justifying an invasion of another country then you'd think the least they'd ask for is to put it in writing. Curiously no single treaty mentions anything like that. Weird hu? But now suddenly it's sooooo important and we feel sooooo betrayed by the evil west who is looring all those little countries into their evil evil defense pact. Now we must crush them! It's a democracy. The majority does not see themselves as part of China. End of story. Same <deleted> as in Ukraine. Some part of the population is pro Russia so Russia can just go and take it. BS. The US troops are there by Taiwans invitation for Taiwans defense against an invasion. Why do I need to explain that even? None of the countries you listed have ambitions to invade China. Nobody threatens China. China is not encircled. Neither is Russia. It's Russia and China who are doing the invading. The two top ranking dictators in human history when it comes to people killed are Chinese (Mao) and Russian (Stalin). They killed many more of their own people than Hitler even killed enemies. Several times over. Maybe countries are a little bit afraid of what these two countries might do given all their recent aggressions.
