I have no idea where you are obtaining your statistics. Most HK people live in high rises - as a security you need to key in a code to get in - petty theft is practically non existent. Likewise bag snatching etc. my sister in law has lived on the 37th floor of a high rise bldg for over 30 years.never had an incident. Many years ago a smuggling ring was stealing expensive cars to ship to China. That was stopped. How long ago did you live there? I could walk across town at 3;00 am & not worry about it. Used to walk my small dogs on a lonely sea wall late at night. Not activities I would dream of doing here

Lived in Hong Kong for 23 years & was there last Nov. Let me assure you that the crime rate in HK is very low. With an extremely low incidence of random crime. In all my years there never experienced even the least hint of a threat. Still the same. BUT, HK has a very high ratio of police per 100 citizens. 3 policemen. And no, not BIB. Well trained &. university educated. "Tea Money" will lead you in one direction - jail! I used to feel very safe in Thailand. - now not so much!

Yes I do read - some mystery novels, biographies & various newspapers - the latter online. I love reading - always have & hope to continue for a long time

The problem is that westerners have some health issues which are rare in Thailand. And all too often there is a reluctance to admit this & then begins the runaround. I know -,been there done that. Thais have different nasal structures & don't seem to have the same issues with chronic sinusitis. As I said in an earlier post, forget the normal ENTs, they know nothing about it & are also not so familiar with allergies. In the end I had to go to BK & lo & behold, I needed sinus surgery. It's a bit like skin cancer & looking at suspicious moles - well you know from Sheryl's posts there is very little experience. It would just save a lot of time & headaches if the consulting doctor would just say "I don't know what's wrong -or I have no experience in this area". But that almost never happens. Luckily with a bit of research one can find excellent doctors in BK. But it's not a cheap exercise

Go to see Dr Songklot at Bangkok Hospital on Sat mornings. There is another great sinus specialist at Bumrungrad but would have to look up his name. The problem you (&I ) face is that Thais do not have sinus problems to anywhere near the same degree / thus lack if experience in dealing with this issue. You absolutely must see a doctor who has trained overseas & who understands sinus issues. The normal E NT doctors here don't have a clue. Been there done that. Good luck !

Have lived here for a decade & to me it seems there is much more animosity now. I feel much less safe than I used to. No need for window bars though - 6 soi dogs living with me!

This just happened to me. Bought a Panasonic from Home Pro which is way too powerful. Bummer as it was so expensive. Not sure how to resolve this - don't really want to buy yet another air con

I have a Panasonic - so quiet you wouldn't even know it's on, a bit pricey though. Just bought it so hoping for a very long life!

Living in Singapore will certainly not prepare you for you may encounter in the Land of Smiles. You can wander around at any time of night & this is not likely to happen to anyone - drunk or otherwise. Lived in Hong Kong for years & have been remotely threatened however late the hour. Ditto Singapore where I have spent lots of time. Quite unlike here where alcohol is such a problem. Personally after midnight I am at home in Thailand it does not feel safe to me

Be very careful about Thai massage. Many so called masseurs have practically no experience & can cause more harm than good. Good luck! Best to see a real doctor & to do some real physio.

I have lived here for over a decade & speak fluent Thai. I am saddened by the negative changes I have seen over the past few years & especially now. Researching where next....can't wait to leave. IMO negatives outweigh the positives no so time to get going. Best of luck to those who remain!

I should add that whilst some may choose to spend their money on beer & bar girls some people choose to spend their money on dogs. To each his own!

As far as I understand it he also neuters as many as he can. Which we in dog rescue also do. The main aim is gain their trust & neuter them. They have a right to life also & at least those of us who help them make sure they are not disease ridden by vaccinating them. Frankly I am disgusted by many of the comments here. The problem is people not dogs. People get puppies, abandon them, never think of being responsible & neutering them. And so we have this terrible problem with stray dogs. Not everyone likes dogs of course but the disregard for the a use, starvation & suffering these animals endure is appalling

You need to get out of Chiangmai - been there done that - sinus surgery constant headaches & sinus infections. Gave up & moved to Hua Hin & finally after a few months SO much better. No more allergy meds - although religiously do saline sinus rinses morning & night. And no more headaches. The dust in the air in C M made it impossible for me to continue living there. Sinusitis is dreadful - you feel like death all the time. I miss many aspects of C M but can't imagine living in that bad air again. Good luck!

Well, I have 6 "soi" dogs - although none are missing a leg. One is blind in 1 eye & we have other health issues. Best thing I ever did. Have had dogs all my life but Thai dogs are hard to beat. Wish more people would realize that. Loving, loyal & so easy to take care of. Living the hi so life now!

Gave up on Chiangmai & moved to Hua Hin. My lungs are very grateful. No need to use my inhaler now. Wish I had moved sooner...

Loved Chiangmai for years but with ever worsening air quality & terrible burning season gave up & moved to Hua Hin. Can't believe how much better I feel. Constant headaches & sinus infections in CM. Disappeared after a few months here. I miss many aspects of CM but cannot imagine living year round in such bad air now. So glad I moved.

My God - as an owner of 6 rescue dogs I was horrified to read this post. My dogs are all neutered, regularly bathed, live my house & sleep on chairs, sofas or where they choose. They all get Frontline monthly - no fleas or ticks & are great family members. And no I don't live in a shack I have a very nice well cared for house. It takes a fair amount of work I will admit, but if you treat them like garbage what do you expect. Man up & do the right thing. Find them a good home. And if you can't do the right thing & look after them properly!

Sleep really well, very good mattress & of course now air conditioning which is essential in April. Oh & toss in a couple of cats & a few dogs - yes -really (grew up sleeping with my dog & highly recommend it). Perfect. Why bother having dogs if you treat them like garden ornaments? But then I am from the UK. I don't recommend sleeping with dogs for everyone but suits me just fine

Breast feeding is by far the best & safest option for a newborn. Any stomach issues should not be self treated & if they persist you absolutely must take the baby to a qualified doctor

My solution to endless sinus problems in Chiangmai (including surgery) was to move to Hua Hin which has very little pollution & lovely sea breeze. Also religious morning & night cleansing of nose with saline solution - essential to helping with sinus issues. Like your partner I hate breathing cold air. I do use an air conditioner now but use cloth tape to tape a light towel over the air con to deflect cold air. Probably a bit self defeating, but works for me. Hashi nasal rinse plus unit can be found in Pharmachoice. Good luck!

I need hip replacement surgery - TB 500,000 - 600,000 at Bangkok Hospital. Very glad I have insurance!

When all this began I sort of knew where it was all headed. I mentioned to many friends " be careful what you wish for". No, no they said, you are wrong, just wait & see. Well we have waited & now we see. And it's really scary & this is far from over

Have you tried Motillium - very inexpensive & helps greatly with gut motility & bloating. Give it a go
