  1. After a decade in Thailand & speaking fluent Thai, I am appalled by the country I now live in. Came here & loved it - at first. But after so many bad experiences & those of friends with lying, cheating, stealing - I could go on, I am utterly disillusioned by this country. And no, not some bitter, dissatisfied complainer. Lived 23 years in Hong Kong & never ever experienced the level of deception I have encountered here. And yes, planning to return to HK. Can't wait actually. And best of all HK has a real justice system which applies equally to both big & little fish!

  2. For those who discredit supplements, I have proof in 2 of my dogs that they work. My pug had terrible skin issues. I started giving her fish oil & Evening Primrose Oil. Incredible difference within a week or two. The other dog gets hardening of the soft tissue of the outer part of his mouth. My clued up vet told me that some Thai dogs don't produce enough vitamin E. 200 mgs a day - problem has cleared up. So, scoff all you may, I believe some supplements do work. When I lived in Hong Kong doctors would run tests as part of a check up to determine whether one had enough bit B 12, etc & would recommend them. I for one take several

  3. After more than a decade here I would not make the decision to live here. Came here with a very positive attitude, learned to speak quite fluent Thai & made thai "friends". Well what can I say. I had lived many years in HK & can honestly say I never experienced the level of deception l have found to be pretty typical. And no I am not a negative, jaded person. Also not a whiner. Just making an observation of my experiences here. Before I moved here I read a comment by someone who had lived here for a while. "Beautiful land, beautiful people but deception at every turn." How cynical I thought! Well now I think that says it all really

  4. Try Nienke Lucky Dogs in Doi Saket - very good at training. Not sure about cost. Thai Ridgebacks should really only be owned by people who know how to handle them. IMHO. Beautiful dogs but not so easy to own. Many people have them for protection but they can be a bit too aggressive for my liking . Just have Thai mixed breed dogs - all rescued - fabulous pets!

  5. I have had exactly that happen to me actually & the leader was a pitbull

    - a terrifying moment - I dropped all the treats on the floor but stood my ground. That surprised him & he stopped to check what was going on....now one of my pals. I don't underestimate the threat soi dogs present - & even I carry a small pepper spray just in case. ( in 10 years have not had to use it). But don't dismiss what I am recommending. Like all newbies to Thailand I have had to work out what best to do. And for me it has worked better than even I expected

  6. Nowhere did I say people should be able to deal with their fear - I just said that not being fearful is a key component. And it wasn't easy for me in the beginning when I first came to live here. I moved here from Hong Kong - no packs of stray dogs there. I had no idea whether my strategy would work. What I do know is that aggression begets aggression & street dogs are hyper vigilant & can sense aggression a mile away. I had a lot of scary moments myself in the beginning but as I said in my post, giving treats & being kind actually does work. These dogs have terrible lives - and they can sense when someone means no harm does it work with all dogs - no. 0of course not. But I have a 90% success rate which I regard as pretty good. Works well for, may not work well for others

  7. For those of us who suffer from serious panic disorder Xanax is a life saver. It is also known (can be checked) that those of us who do use it for P D don't abuse it. I take a very low dose daily & am able to manage panic & live a normal life. I was an abused child & research also shows that the brains of abused children are wired differently. I do not recommend casual use of Xanax, but for chronic PD as I said, it's a life saver

  8. Actually not showing fear is critical. Perhaps my solution of giving dog treats works because I have no fear of dogs. For those sceptics out there - the majority in fact / it is nothing short of miraculous how well my solution works. The nastiest of dogs whilst not necessarily my friend just stops & waits to see what I will give them today. I decided to try this approach 10 years ago when I moved to Thailand.and I have had nothing but success. And I like so many others live in a Moobaan with lots of soi dogs, a few gangs & yet they leave me alone. Must be something to it!

  9. This topic has come up before...I have to pass many aggressive dogs in my Moobaan & I have said before - but doubt anyone believes it or is willing to try it - I carry dog treats - lots of them. And while a few are still not that friendly, the others are so glad to see me. No longer interested in biting me - very keen to see what the treats of the day are. Aggression begets aggression & whilst 1 or 2 dogs will be aggressive no matter what dog treats work wonders. Soi dogs are used to nothing but abuse - believe me, they are so delighted to get a treat. Have had a few foaming at the mouth ready to bite - but a tasty treat did the trick. Yes, really...
