Wait Till We Get Our Samui Coconut On You.

there was a letter in the bangkok post last week calling attention to an announcement by a government minister calling for a curb on foriegners opening businesses here that compete unfairly with thai businesses by providing cheaper prices and better customer service than the thais.
I have heard a while ago they planned to open one in Nathon...may be only a rumour.
Tesco better customer service......???? We had this subject already.....nuff said.

Chedi is much better and also the Rajamka near Wat Pra Singh, both really good.cheers
Same price range?
Probably near same if you shop around on the internet for the room rate.
Also check out Yang Come Village, I really liked it there. Very friendly, peaceful and in the center of town. Probably also cheaper than Tamarind.

I am taking bets that there will be NO new airport on Samui. After PG was awarded the ground handling (or at least some) at the new BKK airport, I think TG and may be others will soon be allowed to service Samui and handle additional traffic. Kind of trade-off I guess.
I have no idea in regards to the 20 mile distance radius between two airports, but I just can see it happening. Samui has changed for the worst over the last years and unless something is done soonest, it will end up like Pattaya a few years back.

A SUCCESS STORY
Nathon Group saves part of the coast
Story by SUPAPHONG CHAOLAN
The successful fight against a large reclamation project at Ban Nathon has brought a secondary blessing for the local community. The two-year battle resulted not only in the scrapping of the planned 447-million-baht project, but gave birth to the Nathon Group.

ISLAND RUNNING DRY
Soaring demand from tourism boom poses tough challenge for Samui's water office
Story by PIYAPORN WONGRUANG
Koh Samui's ever-increasing water demand is proving a tough challenge for the island's waterworks agency. The tourism boom, with more than a million visiting the island each year, has intensified water shortages. Samui, with an official population of 40,000, is also home to many non-registered residents.

DEMAND FOR 'DEAD SPACE'
Land developers buying up island cemeteries
Story by WASSAYOS NGAMKHAM
Just last month, Passakorn Phuthichiwin was offered 40 million baht for his two-rai plot of land in tambon Mae Nam where his parents are buried. He firmly rejected it.
It looks like we get our fair share of PR from BKK Post considering articles over the last week.
May be they should rename it Bankok-Samui Post.

Hi
Thai Airways in UK say there is no way around the height restriction, but I know a family who took a dog on the Bangkok - Chiang Mai route 3 weeks ago and the carrier/crate was only fractionally smaller than the one my dog needs. I think I shall make some more enquiries.
You may want to try Bangkok Airways, I have seen several times already bigger dogs being handled in Samui. Could have been a 717 though and to my knowledge PG doesn't use this aircraft on BKK-CNX route.
-
Probably a member of the Thai Royal Family who visited the island. He is known to fly the aircarft himself. Happened many times before.
That also explained the police at the airport.
-
Well, enough of that. It doesn't matter who got shot, Thai, farang, male, female, gay or straight. A man is dead and his family is in mourning.
I'd be interested to know more details ie: was it a teenage gang? Was it a puyaibahn trying to clean up Samui. Anyone know?
Fact is the man (Thai) is dead...apparently some issues with tip-offs, just read the Thai Rat Thai newspaper (BKK Post is not covering).

A lot of Woofters visit this place.
What's a Woofter?
A woofter is a gay/fagget -- just wonder why John 1 knows

Hello everybody.
I am moving into Samui next months for work and will be staying for a good 18 months.
I live in Malaysia at the moment and I own a year and a half old Rav4.
I was wondering if it is worth to try to import it with me or if it is better sell it and aqcuire a new one once in Thailand.
Thank you for any advice on this.
Cheers
Sell it in Malaysia and buy a new one in Samui, saves you a lot of headache and lots of money for sure. Import taxes are sky high......

Remember not too long ago the Major group(who had the franchise right on Pizzahut's in Thailand) ran into conflict with PepsiCo, the owner of Pizzahut (along with kfc etc) about exactly how high these franchise fees had to be to extend their franchise right...
Negotiations went wrong, Major lost the pizzahut rights and simply went along renaming all existing pizzahut restaurants to "the Pizza Company".....
wasn't that the Minor Group (i.e. Bill Heinecke), but sure, Major Ggroup sounds better

Bangkok Airways sees property fund as antidote to rising costs
UMESH PANDEY
Bangkok Airways is planning to set up a property fund for its highly profitable Samui Airport to raise funds for expansion. ''No, we are not undertaking a securitisation, instead we are studying a proposal for a property fund for the airport,'' said a top source at the airline.
The property fund, which would be the first for a local airport, would allow Bangkok Airways to raise as much as 11 billion baht, which it plans to use for future growth.
The fund, which would use Samui Airport as an asset, would probably be launched in mid-August and would be managed by Siam City Asset Management. Capital Nomura Securities would be the lead underwriter for the offering, alongside other brokers to be named later.
Bangkok Airways is awaiting Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approval for its proposal.
''The company has been undertaking roadshows and meeting investors. We are confident that we will be able to successfully sell the offering,'' said the source, who asked not to be named.
Bangkok Airways, which operates 16 aircraft and three airports in Thailand _ Samui, Trat and Sukhothai _ had previously shelved an initial public offering because of poor equity market conditions coupled with rising fuel costs.
''The reason for this property fund is to raise money to leverage the firm as the industry is heading for strong headwinds from rising fuel costs, the resurgence of the bird flu virus and other issues that may reappear,'' the source said.
The company's aim is to pay off nearly three billion baht in debts and expand its operations.
Samui Airport, the jewel in the company's crown, has handled around 750,000 passengers over the last 12 months.
The total is expected to rise to around 800,000 over the next 12 months.
The airline also plans to use the proceeds from the fund to expand its fleet to serve the robust economies of India and China.
''China is a country that everyone is running to and India is a country that nobody can ignore,'' he said.
''We have already started our preparatory work on expanding our fleet to India, and although you may not see anything happen over the next six months, over the next 12 months you may see us flying there.''
The airline also plans to restart services to the Maldives, which were suspended in 2003 following the Sars (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) outbreak.
Earlier the airline said that it would use part of the proceeds to fund its planned investments in Suvarnabhumi airport. However, Bangkok Airways now says it will only spend another billion baht on a new hangar as part of its long-term investment strategy.
In view of the above, I do not see another airport coming to Samui (or even close by)
and I think thats good !

Okay, may I suggest to contact the Rotary Club of Pattaya (www.rotary-pattaya.org) or (www.rotary-jomtien-pattaya.org)and let them know what you are doing. I am pretty sure they will support at least something. You may even get invited to one of their weekly meetings and tell them what you need. Also, consider contacting Father Joe of the Mercy Center in BKK (Human Development Foundation). He has hundreds of kids on his own, but he may be able to give other, non material, support. If you do not get any response from the Rotary Club there, send an email to the Rotary Club of Koh Samui. Very effective and versatile club which does a lot for children in need (there is no orphanage on Samui, therefore the club here helps others in need on a regular basis.) A member of the local Rotary Club might then visit your center to affirm all is okay and the club in Samui will do its part.
If you then still not get any further, please let me know. Happy to give, just wanna make sure it gets where its supposed to go.

Samui 'Bandidos gang' busted
(dpa) - Police have arrested three members of the Bandidos, an international motorcycle gang allegedly engaged in Mafia-type activities, such as the drug trade and money laundering.
About 100 officers with the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), crime-suppression police and anti-money-laundering force participated in the raid on the suspects' hilltop house-cum-office on Samui Island, a popular tourist resort situated 450 kilometres south of Bangkok in the Gulf of Thailand.
"We've been getting complaints for some time about this gang running protection rackets, forcing small businesses to sell out to them and engaging in illegal land sales," said a DSI spokesman, Colonel Piyawat Kingkeow.
Arrested were two British nationals - Peter Watkin-Jones, 40, and Crispin John Grandvil Papon-Smith, 40 - and Danish national Kim Lindegaard Nielsen, 36.
The gang's suspected leader, Danish national Peter Buch Rosenberg, 35, had recently left the island for Denmark. Thailand plans to request his extradition to face criminal charges in the kingdom, Piyawat said.
"This gang has been under police observation for money-laundering activities for some time now," said the colonel, who noted that the suspects had made more than 300 bank transactions over the past two years worth 3 billion baht (79 million dollars).
Samui residents have lodged complaints against the foreigners for asking them for protection money, forcing restaurants and small businesses to sell out to them and buying and selling land to foreigners using forged documents.
The Danish embassy to Thailand has been cooperating with Thai police in investigating the gang.
"The Bandidos started out as an American motorcycle gang, riding Harley Davidsons and so on, and eventually, they spread to Europe," Piyawat said. "But they aren't all criminals, only about 1 per cent."
The DSI spokesman denied that the Bandidos had anything to do with another land scandal that was recently uncovered on Samui, involving tracts of forest reserves being sold to investors, some of whom were alleged to be powerful politicians.

I flew in January. We war 8 Person. The price was 5100 Bath plus 300 Bath airport tax. We leave the Airport at 8:00 clock AM and we been back at 12:00 AM. Great! If the will fly again, I will use this way to do my runs.
.....if it ever runs again that is......
What do u mean?
Is that supposed to be funny, I'm guessing that you are happy at their missfortune of not getting the license to land on the sea and run the business as it was initially intended.
why?
How do you know it is the license for landing on sea that makes them not fly, I guess it's rather the license to carry paying passengers that is holding them up...... and no...I don't think its funny, would love to take a trip on a sea plane......

Hello, I have gotten so much info from reading these forums, I figured I could get GREAT help from someone. I will be on Samui late september and I am looking for a fantastic place. I really like the bungalows, and one on a beautiful beach would make our trip. A/C, pools, etc would be icing on the cake. Any recommendations for Samui and or Phan Gan would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Justin.

And is the price by person, and when do they leave? Does someone have more info? Also How long does it take return?
Plane has been grounded for weeks already, still no license to carry passengers.....better take a bus before the visa runs out
