  1. It's probably why so many people don't work

I have an english friend who married a thai and she was allowed to work after 1 year in the UK and now that they have divorced she retains her british citizenship and receives a small pension, free housing and free healthcare. She even got a free bus pass.

It begs the question why can't a man who is married to a thai, who has been visited and vetted by the local authorities in this country be allowed to support his family. In this day and age you would have thought that Thailand would have allowed the "aliens" to work without prejudice. Alas, this is not the case due to some xenophobic laws that others will choose to circumnavigate when possible.

I very much doubt that British citizenship was obtained in one year !

There is no such thing as "free" housing in the UK so why post this nonsense ?

Doubt away but its entirely true, why would I lie just so you can scoff nonsensically. She has british citizenship and free housing provided and paid for by the government

  3. Thanks to all the posters who have offered constructive advice. The family business employs 10 thai nationals already and they are going to apply to the labor department to employ my friend on a part time basis as a designer "situated in a different location" for a supposed salary of 20,000 to 30,000 per month. I did see another poster say that his salary would have to be around 60,000 bht per month but I am unaware of the reason why. If the salary was as high as this, what would be the amount of tax to be paid compared to the lower salary?

    Once again, thank you

  4. There is no possibility of your 'friend' obtaining a legal work permit on the basis of being a 'freelancer'

What is offered is illegal !

WP's are issued and linked to one specific job/employer and can only be used in the district where they are issued.

If he wants the job and the work permit offered by the family he will have to move to Bangkok.

Whenever this person works as a "teacher" he is risking arrest, fines, jail and deportation.

He realises that he is circumnavigating the law in this way but it must be said that many foreigners who are employed at the local schools (albeit with a work visa) also freelance as teachers outside of the school in the same private tuition school he works in. This is common knowledge in the province but it is overlooked or ignored because the province is not a popular tourist area and has a problem attracting english speaking foreigners who will teach their students. Immigration seem to be quite happy to turn a blind eye as long as he has a work permit and pays taxes.

So the question remains, how would a company in Bangkok obtain a work visa for a foreigner as their freelance graphic designer? Is a lawyer required or can the company obtain the visa on behalf of their employee for a more modest fee

    Thanks

  5. Hi guys

An old friend who is married to a thai and resides in the south of Thailand on a non immigrant sometimes works as an english teacher in his spare time. Recently he has been advised that it is in his best interests to get a work permit but he is unable to fulfill all the criteria to obtain a work permit as a teacher. He has been advised by his local immigration office that as long as he has a work permit from a company in Thailand and pays tax he will be allowed to continue teaching part time. So his wifes family has offered him a job as a freelance graphic designer in their business in Bangkok.

My friend has then consulted a lawyer in Bangkok who after becoming aware of the facts has said that they can get him a work permit but they are asking for 20,000 bht for their services because the company that are offering employment is in BKK but he is located in another province. I think this is grossly overpriced and I wanted to check on his behalf what the procedure would be if his wifes family applied for a work permit in his name in Bangkok instead.

Thank you for any assistance you can offer

  6. Hi guys

A friend of mine has just got a Lenovo Thinkpad s210 notebook with 320g hard drive and 2 gig of memory. When he switched it on he found that windows was not preinstalled and that he had just a version of freedos. He brought it to me to check it out but I dont know anything about dos and it does not have a cd drive to easily install windows

So what are his options to install a familiar operating system and how would he go about it. Might also need to look into upgrading the ram as well to 4gb or more as well

    Cheers

  7. Just write down the details of the financial division in the box on the back of the divorce application at the Amphur office.

It's legally binding on both parties.

What I should have also added is that I need to renew my marriage visa by the end of July this year to allow me to find the time to sell the property. I am certain she will help me to renew my visa so what I am looking for is something that will protect me before the annulment like a legally binding agreement to repay the 5,000,000 if and when we get divorced

    You're asking for trouble.

you must engage a lawyer whether you like it or not.

I think you may well be right about the lawyer but I don't know how they can help me right now without antagonising the situation at the moment regarding my visa. I am legally allowed to stay in the country until the end of July and thats when I would go and do a marriage renewal which I think she would agree too as I have done nothing wrong to her other than show my anger and disapproval of her behaviour. At the moment she is staying with her family in BKK and in Hua Hin where I have found out that she is in the process of forming a new relationship with an old guy with money.

I know that the properties in BKK are in her families name and the land in Nonthaburi is in her sisters name. I have agreed that she can have them as I have no reasl legal right to claim them. The land that I bought and the house that I built and live in definately in her name even though I had insisted that it was put into my name. I now have the chanote and house book safely hidden away. All of this only came to light over the last 6 months and it drove a massive wedge between us as I realised just how dishonest and untrustworthy she really was.

The money that she took from me was a small amount from my personal account. I was hospitalised with cellulitis and she needed to withdraw funds to pay my hospital bill. 6 months later and she took my atm card and withdrew 20,000 bht without my permission or acknowledgement. I only realised she had done this when I saw my statement the following month.

Sorry if my responses seems a little muddled and confusing, its just that my mind is all over the place at the moment struggling to work out what is best for me to do.

PS With regards to a retirement visa, I am 48 in July so I cannot apply for that right now. But I notice someone mentioned getting a year multi entry in Savannakhet. How easy is that to do and what provisions would I need to ensure I receive it

  8. my understanding is that the legal stipulations states that assets acquired during marriage should be split 50/50

Yes you are right but in this scenario she is agreeing to allow me to sell the house and property and keep the money because she has been caught stealing and says she is willing to do the amicable thing. But I will need time to sell the property before I agree to the final uncontested divorce and then end the marriage and my visa too

  10. Hi guys

After 15 years of marriage it looks like I am heading towards a divorce. My wife has been caught withholding money from our business and also taking money from my bank account. We have discussed the situation and provisionally agreed that she will keep the houses and land in BKK (which she has placed in her families name) and that I can sell our home and land and then she will sign it over to any potential buyer.

Of course, this is easy to say and I realise that she can quite easily renege on the deal at any stage. What I am looking for is some idea that will ensure she cannot claim half of the property which is somewhere around 5 million baht. A friend suggested that we write up some sort of loan agreement of the amount the property is worth with the proviso that if we divorce this money must be paid first before the annulment is agreed. Is this possible and if so, how would I go about wording it and would I need a lawyer to ratify this agreement.

It will be an amicable split if I can arrange this or some other idea that protects my assets. If not, then I have proof of infidelity through Line app messages. Seems my wife is already looking for an old man to pay all her bills. C'est la vie

    Thanks guys

  11. Hi Guys

I have an old style Sanyo gas hob and oven that I bought about 8 years ago for around 6,000 bht. Yesterday I tried to do some baking which required a temperature of 180 degrees but the gauge shows its only reaching 150 degrees and after an hour 160 degrees. I noticed that the flame at the bottom burner was low and when I use the knob to increase the gas it went up just a little. This morning I took it out and apart from some surface rust I did not notice any other blockages. I put it all back together again but it has made no difference at all.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to get the flames higher and the temperature back to normal.

  12. Hi

I am married to a thai national and have a non immigrant o visa which requires me to report to immigration every 3 months. I have to report at the end of February but sometime in March I want to return back to the UK for a visit. How will this affect my visa on my return to Thailand? My annual renewal is due sometime in May so would I have to start a new application over again.

    Thanks for your advice

I did chiangmai to mukdahan in one day on it and it held up great

Why did you get bored of it? Have you come from a bigger bike or something?
