I note the Koreans are waiving any issues regarding Thais immigration status, and offering a full amnesty, as they see the threat of the virus as being way more important. Be interesting to see the reaction here when someone on overstay is found to be infected, or wishes to leave citing virus fears.

I absolutely agree. In the last week three of the places I eat at in Pattaya have gone under and that is only going to be the tip of the iceberg. Very tough times coming for many businesses across the country. I can sympathise with many, though those like taxi drivers and other price gougers who have ripped their customers off as hard as they could for years rank right down near the bottom of the list.

Just now, smedly said:They can now ban political gatherings lol
you couldn't make this stuff up
next announcement - all political gatherings banned because of COVID 19 risk
Indeed. I was just thinking the timing for this was a little coincidental considering his announcement that while he would NEVER (), stop people meeting for political reasons, he would stop them on health grounds. If the GP goes, nothing remains sacred and I can see us going back to the no more than 5 people may get together rule.

1 hour ago, webfact said:The deputy prime minister/public health minister commented that he had never considered banning political gatherings where people have rights and freedom of expression
I somehow find that kind of hard to believe. Especially since in the same breath he essentially went on to say that he was happy to stop people gathering if he could do so under the guise of health grounds.

I saw this wondrous snippet from that full story: Police Lieutenant Chanikarn Puenpinit said the alleged attack could damage the image of tourism in the city, best known for its round-the-clock adult industry and as a safe-haven for foreign criminals.
Oh, that made me laugh. If those are what makes the place famous, can you be surprised when family folk don't come?

I had to read that three times before my brain confirmed what my eyes were seeing. Are they saying that before this, those operating boats transporting tourists didn't know, or might have forgotten the absolute basic principles of water navigation? Given the crashes and fatalities these guys have been producing, you could be forgiven for assuming that they did indeed need this, what I note was termed as, basic training.
May God help those in peril on the sea, especially when in Thai waters.

An extra factor to be considered is the fact that right now Thailand doesn't have much water, so to throw millions of gallons around which they really can't spare, added to the virus spreading potential, does mean there is good cause to call as much of it off as possible. Won't happen though, but as I head out of town for the duration every year anyway, it won't bother me much, unless of course our borders get sealed.

Only in Thailand! She cuts from completely the wrong lane straight across in front of the truck, obviously didn't use her mirrors as she says she didn't see it, and then leaves the scene, thinking a slippery road rather than her abysmal driving is to blame! She is as guilty as it gets. Stupid too.

It's a quite simple concept to grasp once one looks at the overall score or reputation someone has. If you give a laugh they get plus one on their reputation count, same as a like or a thanks. Confused and sad do NOT give an addition to their reputation and hence, credibility.
I see a lot of far right and far left posters making outrageous claims and being laughed at, which gives them a positive score, when one of the negative ones might have been more appropriate.
Most people from the tone of their post know if someone is laughing with them, or at them, and the other emojis are even simpler.

Criminal defamation laws in this country are extremely harsh, and even if what you say about someone can be proven to be true, you can still lose and go to jail. They do not have to show that it is false, purely that such publication caused them personal suffering. Crazy as it sounds, that is how it is.

If I was her lawyer after viewing that I would throw her keys out the window and tell her to take the bus to wherever she needs to go.
With such an attitude after her actions cost someone their life, and having driven off without a care, she really should not be allowed to drive.
The poor guy in the lorry does what he can to avoid her and would have probably been better off driving straight up her rear.

24 minutes ago, Forza2002 said:Singapore has a similar climate to Thailand and it has nearly 100 confirmed cases of the virus. Also it closed its borders to Chinese travelers more than 3 weeks ago. Thailand only reporting 35 cases, very dubious to say the least.
Like many posters I have been scratching my head a lot over the official figures and I kept coming back to climate. Flu is seasonal and comes every winter, but dies away when it warms up.
Singapore as you rightly point out is the fly in the ointment, as their climate is not like much of the Northern hemisphere right now, though they do live absolutely on top of each other, so once one person has got it, I can see it spreading rapidly. Then again, it might be spreading a lot quicker even there, if it were 20-30 degrees colder.
Time will tell if the Thais have been honest or not, and obviously the repercussions of having been found to have been lying, to prop up tourism, would be horrendous.
Who knows? Somewhere that never gets really cold might actually be the safest place in the world right now. As long as you don't need to go out on the roads of course.

This crowd never cease to amaze me. Did they think they could just dissolve a major political rival without the rest of the world noticing or making comment? And to try to fight back with cheap insults like "idiot" or suggesting that they don't understand.
Oh, they understand crooked goings on all too well, as do those of us who live here and see such nefarious activities continuously.
The depth of desperation to cling to power is disgraceful.

Now I have seen some films occasionally win awards, which when I subsequently watched them, puzzled me as to how the hell they did so.
AFTER watching a movie is probably the best time to make informed comment, though I note he asked the crowd, "Is it good? I don't know."
So he hasn't watched it, but that doesn't prevent him from slagging it off for winning, purely on the grounds it wasn't American!
Now Hollywood has produced some great films over the years and some absolute piles of trash at the same time.
I fail to see though, how a movie made by someone else that is adjudged better than Hollywood, should get treated as political point scoring material, or how a crowd with even some intellectual capacity could follow such utter dross so fervently.
God help us should someone outside America win a major literary prize as I can already hear the calls for the book to be burnt in the streets the way things are going. And we all know where burning books takes us.

I bet even the old fella driving a buffalo cart saw that one coming.
Dissolution of a political party is something you should never see in a democracy.
If the party is as evil as their enemies suggest, the populace should have the right to not vote for them.
Dissolving them only shows the fear those pulling strings have of a party that wants to make things fairer for the people.

Much as I dislike keeping large chunks of money in Thai banks, they are a lot safer than having 1,000,000 in the house in cash. One has to ask who else knew the money was there? Many burglaries are the result of inside information after all.

I can't remember how many years this discussion about getting better English teachers has been going on. Nothing has happened to date, and it is difficult to see anything really positive happening any time soon.
Immigration seem set to vilify us to such a degree, many potentially good teachers will be put off by the attitude towards them from chunks of the population who believe all they hear in the news. Then there comes the issue of salary of course, an immense hurdle to jump to actually get quality.
I want to believe that Thailand will dramatically improve their entire education system, but unfortunately I just can't.

It seems a little odd that the bank apparently admit the loan was fraudulent, but took every satang she had legitimately in her account anyway. Good luck to her in getting it sorted out. Thai banks are not renowned for speed or openness in resolving such matters.

A post using nicknames for candidates has been removed.
Sadly, this post was quoted several times and all of those replies, and replies to those replies, some quite good, have had to be removed also.
If you are going to go to the trouble of writing a lengthy post and you want your post to stand, please cut out the childish comments and say the persons name correctly. No nick names or plays on words of names. That goes for both sides of the house in this discussion.

PM orders measures to deal with virus crisis
in Thailand News
Posted
The reason the "measures" are largely undisclosed, is most likely because right now, they are probably largely unknown. Privately praying for a miracle a lot, making merit, buying amulets and coming up with half believable stories for the public probably make up much of the current strategy, and likely will remain so until they see how deep in the doodoo they are.
