  1. You are not talking about racism. You are talking about bigotry.

I would expect more from a person that owns bookstores. Perhaps reading some of them might broaden your understanding. There are subtle differences between bias, prejudice and discrimation. All forms of discrimination are categorized under bigotry including race, gender, age etc.

People that discriminate against immigrants are racist regardless if they are just different nationalities, cultures or race.

sdanielmcev:"That contradicts what you've been saying."

You didn't actually read the piece written in yellow did you?

"which he cannot show to be justifiable irrespective of the colour, race, nationality or ethnic or national origins of the person to whom it applied"

sdanielmcev "I know of no country that has successfully defended a definition of racism as other than against a certain race, not culture, class, nationality, etc..."

You apparently have never been to the US or have read the last Thai Constitution.

When I worked for the US government in Washington we all had to take a culture sensitivity training seminar and were informed quite clearly what is defined as racial prejudice.

Not that Wiki is a great source but most other major sources I have read classify it similarly.

Race is a social concept used to categorize humans into large and distinct populations or groups by anatomical, cultural, ethnic, genetic, geographical, historical, linguistic, religious, and/or social affiliation.

Governments love telling us how to think.

  2. I watched a girl at the school gate yesterday morning, that didn't Wai me. Not that it matters, but she was waiing everyone else, including other fathers. When I stood directly in front of her, quite near this morning she glanced away. I got two Wais out of her when she realised I wasn't going to go away. I'll see what happens tomorrow.

The school principle sometimes wais me, sometimes not but everybody gets that treatment.

You appear to be bordering on the creepy.

And you have a nasty suspicious mind. Read my other post. She wasn't waiing Farangs, avoiding looking at them. She does now. Saying that 'it's the principal that counts' is usually asking for trouble but I made an exception in this case. I pay good money for that school and expect at least a minimum of respect. Many of the hundreds of kids there know me and say hello, so why should I let her get away with that?

" When I stood directly in front of her, quite near this morning she glanced away. I got two Wais out of her when she realised I wasn't going to go away." - I have read your post and whichever way you look at it your statement is creepy coming from a schoolteacher.

  3. Any Thai woman who gets seriously involved with a foreigner has some explaining to do.

To whom, and exactly what the nature of this explanation involves depends almost entirely upon her family's position or their perceived position in the food chain.

The Thai hierarchical system is the key here.

The higher her family's position, the daughter of a doctor or a prominent businessman, the more explaining she will have to do.

The lower her family's position, the daughter of a sam lor driver or a sharecropper, the less explaining she will have to do.

This should be evident to all parties from the outset.

If it is not evident, or if the need for explanation is blurred and obscured primarily by physical attraction and emotion there will be blowback in direct proportion to the woman's family's social standing.

I have heard of Thai fathers and heads of family actually begging and imploring a foreigner to consider abandoning marriage plans.

After a nice lunch another father invited his daughter's boyfriend back to his office.

Over coffee he pulled file folders of three years credit card receipts from his desk drawer, placed them squarely in front of the prospective groom.

He then asked him point blank if he was prepared to take over and support his daughter's shopping habits in addition to the normal responsibilities of raising a family. He added that although he hadn't spoiled his daughters he had always approved of their spending habits as a protection against inappropriate matrimonial choices.

At the other end of the scale we have all heard of entire villages in Thailand's agricultural hinterlands celebrating the good fortune that comes from their daughter landing a farang tuna.

    Kind of works like that.

and i have friends married into wealthy families where the heads of the thai families came to them and suggested the connection!

I'm guessing you don't know many at all who have been propositioned in this way. Maybe even none?

  4. Thailand is full of failed ex-pats. There is something about Thailand that attracts the sort of people who hover around the lower reaches of farang society. Many have failed before they found Thailand and others failed while they were in Thailand. I have sympathy for those who have tried and failed but very little sympathy for those who have gravitated towards Thailand having already become failures. There are also those who have let the fantasy, for many that is Thailand, become a reality. There is no way back for them.

  6. The main institutions are corrupt. The population are, from a very young age, taught not to question things. It's just the way it is. There will be cosmetic changes under the junta but in time the old style corruption will return. Thailand isn't the US, UK or any other western country, it is a country that is culturally 180 degrees different from the west. If one can't handle that then don't visit or live in the Kingdom.

  7. It's the "sandy soil" thing that worries me. Any tunnel builder will tell you bedrock is key. Having worked on the Channel Tunnel I know the work involved whether it is 200 yards or 20 miles long. Look at the amount of empty buildings in Bangkok unfit because of the insufficient piling carried out. It will be the same civil engineers working on the tunnel. Make up your own mind.

  8. so provide your evidence

Either you spend all day with your head in the sand or don't communicate verbally or even read discussion boards. I have literally hundreds of examples where guys have been done over. One typical example is an Aussie guy I know had a bar on one of the soi's on Sukhumvit, Bangkok. He went back to Oz for 2 or 3 weeks and when he returned the place was sold and cleared out. Just one example.

    name? address? phone #?

    You will know the place.
  9. Never lend money or become involved in a monetary transaction if it involves regular payments with a Thai. You will get stuffed.

    Utter nonense.

With respect, just for a start how many farang guys have been rolled with a house, bar, business, car, motorbike. It's almost the norm. I respect your right to an opinion but the evidence is just staring you in the face.

What does your reply have to do with your nonsensical comment about never lending money to a thai etc ?

I dont dispute your above reply as an opinion of yours.

Would you lend money to a Thai? Not meaning a couple of hundred baht but a few grand?

  11. The Thai language has no way near the vocabulary as- for example - English or Spanish. The OP mentions tones and that is where farangs always trip up. Thai's will make allowances for our lack of melodic tones. From an English perspective try and understand what your local Indian in a corner shop or driving a taxi is saying. We make allowances without even thinking about it, so do the Thai's.
