  1. An indication of prize differentials at the top level here, this is the $ schedule for the Bang Saen half marathon - 350,00 baht 1st overall, 30,000 first Thai Invited Kenyan runners won male and female overall; first Thais were M-10th and F-8th And note the highest age group is 70+ Event we entered in January had an 84 year old male runner, got massive applause at the finish line.
  2. No, it's the organisations and sponsors' right to determine where prize money is allocated, and this is set out in conditions of entry. Don't like it, *$#@ off! though I doubt 95% on this board could run across a single lane road. I've been involved in sport at various levels, to semi-professional full-time athlete across NZ, Aust: continued in Malaysia / Thailand, now purely amateur for enjoyment, every event provides rules, restrictions and conditions of entry. I've been ineligible for cash or 'lucky draw' spot prizes at events specific to that country. This is how it is.
  3. All the armchair / barstool athletes here, surprised how many! This morning I competed in a running event, came home with a trophy for age group prize. Prize money was for overall 1st to 3rd male and female in each event, great to see so many talented young athletes in a field of around 900 starters, 1st in the 10km went to a 14yr girl and 18yr boy, both representing their athletic clubs. Understand the main sponsor M-Seven put up 300,000 baht towards the event, supported by local amphurs as the event was to fundraise for Chanthaburi youth athletics. Like a rock concert we started with smoke machines (but I thought the stage was in fire) and fireworks displays at 5.30am. And I got a good cheer at prizegiving, "the man from New Zealand" was apparently the only non-Thai competitor. Very very briefly I had minor celebrity status. Suggest any moaners just read the conditions of entry for any event, set your whinge-o-meter back to zero and don't bother to enter if the organisation's rules bothers you so much.
  4. and yet ... we face this problem. We're one of eleven houses built 2016-18, town of (estimates vary) 7,000-9,000. Utilities all ok , show address correctly, yet Google Maps has never updated. Google Street View ends about 100m from the first house. Regularly get calls of 'where' when we've had delivery of furniture, building materials, but the post office, Grab and 7-11 deliveries get here now they know us. Last time at Immigration I showed the IO on her tablet she did a screenshot, printed, for me to mark X and sign
  5. Buriram had 'best of Thailand ' additional prize money, as did the Bang Saen half marathon in December If sponsors wish to donate to support local athletes, that's their choice I've competed in five Chanthaburi events in past three months - I'd probably support the 'no foreigner prize money' these are local events, locally sponsored, one in November was cleaned out by visiting Kenyans who took every cash prize, just popped in for a warm-up! Sunday I'm running again, I may suggest a special 'good farang' prize for me as they used my image (with consent) in promotional material advertising the race. This is a fundraiser for Chanthaburi Youth Athletics Club, fully sponsored my M-7 apparel, much appreciated. Edit. Just a note here, in my full-time triathlete/ ocean swim days I (NZ) entered numerous Australian events where prizes were for Oz entrants only. Sponsors prerogative.
  6. though in this case, they're Cameroonians! Pale-skinned gingers in kilts they are not. Unclear who started the "dark-skinned Scottish' that was reported, though seems it was half-right in basis they may well be dark-skinned being from Cameroon. And both currently in Singapore.
  7. No - no sample taken (!), just a question and an A+ written on the form. Easy to remember it's better than any grade I got in uni days.
  8. Bizarre, I don't believe they do 'farang price'. 69,900 (it's the ABS model); aware other dealers charge more but that was the Honda website suggested retail price. Two Honda brand helmets as part of the deal. No complaints on the costs I'm certainly not going to whine about a potential 400b cost. Their service throughout has been A+, got all the accessories I wanted, fitted at no cost, first service done, I'm happy, hoping it is as reliable as the old Fino on 95,476km as at today still in daily use.
  9. Got my extra electronic 'key' yesterday (2023 Honda Click 160). Not just a matter of collecting it though, technician had to program it, about ten minutes. Cost 1000 baht. Also ready - Green ownership book and white registration plate (and a 500 baht refund for the red plate they removed).
  10. Bought a Click 160 in December, one electronic 'key' provided. Ordered a spare last month and was told 1300b - collect it later this afternoon, will confirm price.
  11. Bought a new Fino in 2013, now on 95,000km still running well, new fuel pump last month the biggest expense I've had, otherwise just standard maintenance, tyres etc. Had a 2008 Fino before that, sold in 2013 at 54,000 to wife's friend, last seen had over 100k on it.
  12. December I bought a new Honda Click 160 ABS in Chanthaburi. Started at the largest Honda dealer in town, their price was 72,500 but wouldn't sell for cash, only on hire purchase. Next Honda dealer on the same road - ok with cash and selling at the suggested retail price on the Honda website, 69,900 baht. Green book and registration plate arrived today - took 7 weeks, collect this afternoon along with the spare electronic 'key' I ordered.
  13. In December I went to DLT Chanthaburi to check on the latest requirements for car and motorbike licences. I was given a list of documents plus address for a suggested medical centre; 100 baht fee - they filled out the form with height, weight, blood pressure, blood type, signed and stamped, that was it, a bargain.
  14. Criteria include grave illness, being handicapped or being over 70. Is this a Get Out of Jail Free card for most posters here?
  15. Chanthaburi's provincial emblem is the rabbit in the moon. Rabbit logos galore across the province. Two weeks ago, rabbit pants in the style of elephant pants went on sale.
  16. Bars and YouTube. About a year ago a YouTube channel from a Canadian setting up The Last Bar, Chiang Mai. Thought he'd bought the bar, but lost in translation it was only leased. Lost a lot on the rebuild, all went quiet. He's back now having returned to work in Canada while the bar was losing - his statement - 50-60,000 a month. Pumping more money into it to make the bar a success - give him points for perseverance! and maybe he'll recover the losses eventually.
  17. Two guided cycle tours about 10 years ago from Phnom Penh with 'Vicious Cycle', well-organised and and an excellent group leader - same one both times. My lasting memory was having to be reminded which side of the road ... off a dirt track then oops straight into oncoming traffic. Later did a self-funded tour on one of their hire bikes.
  18. What is the problem? I'm law-abiding; I choose to use an agent for convenience. That's one less person ahead of you as you wait in the queue.
  19. Question that figure of 700,000. Typo, or for dramatic effect? Only lived there a year 2009-10, but as a cyclist/runner think I'd have noticed. Soi Dg Foundation quoted 70,000, more realistic.
  20. As above post, suggest try Nai Chan Bike Shop 119/3 Laonadee Road, Nai Mueang, Mueang, KhonKaen 40000 089-153-1594 They are a Probike agent; I bought my latest Trek from the local (Chanthaburi) Probike agent, been excellent for nationwide sale prices (my bike 25% was discount last Songkran), range of accessories, tires - if they don't have item in stock longest wait I've had is two days
  21. 2004, good times but I prefer to be looking ahead But, since you asked. Win? That would have been nice. My most memorable win was a seven race points trail running series in NZ I never finished higher than 3rd or lower than 7th, consistency enough to win the series title on points. Later I was a full-time competitor for eight months, self-funded and no regrets, a fantastic experience in both countries. 2024 I'm 2-3kg heavier than my 2004 weight. But much more than 2kmh slower. 44km on the bike following a friend's 18yr son yesterday put me in my place speed-wise. Always active in sport it's been the one 'constant' in my life - I was introduced to my wife at a surf lifesaving competition, great common interest, neither of us compete in 2024, rather we participate. Tomorrow 5.30am we're in a fun run event, #5 of a series of six, final one on the 18th. I'm part way through a 1000km February cycle challenge. Sea kayaking with daughter #2 this morning. 2004 training was before and after work, as an hourly rate contractor I had flexibility around hours of work and as most clients were UK the time difference from nz meant often working irregular hours. My most recent contract role 2022 was similar, 32hr/wk was ideal.
  22. While they're still alive? There have been just three executions in 20 years +; two in 2009, one in 2018.
  23. 2004. Contract recruitment in NZ, gave flexibility for my more important ocean swimming and triathlon pursuits in NZ/Aust. Life/work balance.
  24. Weight limits; may be a few owners/riders who shouldn't be carrying a pillion: From the 2023 Honda Click 160 manual: Maximum weight capacity 129 kg (284 lb): Including rider, passenger, all luggage, and accessories. That's not much. Comparison, other bike we have, a 2013 Yamaha Fino 115, manual states: The total weight of the operator, passenger, accessories and cargo must not exceed the maximum load limit 163kg (359lb)
  25. We have two Lenovo tablets purchased 2017, 10" and 7". Still going strong, the 10" needed a new battery last year cost 400b for supply and fit, and 200b for replacement charger port at same time. It's had more use, took it with me when I was regularly working offshore rather than the bulk of the laptop.
