  1. A new 7-11 opened in October near us, staff there say the note amount whenever a customer hands over a 500 or 1000. Often a pause as they figure out how to tell me my change amount, for their language practice in English. Admit I have at times made errors in mixing a 1000 in with 100s.
  2. Surveys/polls like this ... unless the voters have been to many/all the countries listed (unlikely) then their vote will be for the one/s they have visited. Hardly a balanced set of statistics.
  3. Private companies get 13, (as per the Labour Protection Act) more only at the discretion of individual employers. Government - nineteen. But lately they've also had 'special' days added eg Friday before Songkran. My former country NZ now gets 12 - one added and two have been 'Mondayised' since I left. Six of them between Dec 25 and Feb 6 makes for a lot of short weeks.
  4. May. From above, there are three business day closures for government offices Monday 6 Friday 10 Wednesday 22 Many private companies - May 22, some the 1st also. Retail and service, hospitality - none of the above The benefits of a public service job.
  5. Used to be a teacher in town with one of these Honda scooters - they also came out in Liverpool colours No football schemes in 2024, latest 2024 Honda Giorno features Donald Duck, suggested retail 67,900
  6. Thai scooter manufacturer Alpha Volantis launched at the Bangkok International Motor Show November 2022, with two models, the Horizon 150 and 300, range has now expanded to have three versions of the 300. The manufacturing plant is located in Chachoengsao, covering an area of 200 rai. Their thirteen dealers are all in the greater Bangkok area; limiting the market.
  7. From the Father Ted tv show, using Father Jack's earwax to make church candles
  8. That didn't take long. The thread I linked goes some way towards explaining why people cease to post here. I could afford any motorbike on the Thai market, but i choose not to, would not suit our purposes. My primary transport is pedal-power, 800-1000km per month. MU-X and a Jazz if required. But this thread was an attempt at scooter conversations (probably doomed as the whining experts arrive).
  9. Saw this thread Just my 10c's worth and I'll make a start on my scooter tales here Until 2008 when living in Phuket I had long-term rentals, then got told of this Yamaha Fino 115cc being sold, Swedish man had bought it for his daughter while she holidayed here, and had been used only 4 months, 3800km, then stored. New battery, and removed a big screen and extra driving lights he'd added. Bought it for 30,000 baht. 2009 had it shipped to Sa Kaeo with Thai Post, lived there a year, many dirt and gravel roads, longest ride was 380km in a day (with pillion!). Moved 200km south to Chanthaburi, sold it in 2013 at 54,000km to a friend who still had it at 94,000km before selling. August 2013 bought another Fino, new 45,000 baht. Now 96,800km and as per picture, well looked after, has had every scheduled oil change and maintenance at Yamaha dealer, no accidents. At that age and mileage has no resale we'll keep it until it stops, daughter now uses it six days a week to/from work until starting uni in June. Biggest single repair expense has been a new fuel pump 2500 baht in November. December 2023 bought the Honda Click 160 ABS. 69,900 baht and so far 3200km. Three weeks ago we did a 180km highway ride, all ok. Considered an ADV 160 but my wife and daughter found it too big to manage. Scooter life is great. Before moving here I'd always had bigger bikes, all the Japanese brands, two Harleys, a Cagiva and two new Triumphs. Now an auto scooter! Such is life... As well as Honda and Yamaha dealers there's also Lambretta and Vespa dealers in the city, Vespas are very popular with the better-off uni students and I see the dealer organises monthly group rides around the province for 150 and 300cc owners. Happy riding.
  10. Lived a year on Soi Yodsane, the feeder road up to Big Buddha. Early morning traffic - not unusual for people to be there for sunrise, great views.
  11. Thanks for your support. I must have had this mental problem a long time, and it's getting worse. Wife and I are both runners but not full marathons, most events begin 5-6am or after sunset, most recent 30 Mar we traveled to Trat for an 8.30pm night run. Still warm, mid 30s. We have two early morning plus one night run coming up. Monday cycled 108km up to Rayong 4hr 9min 10am start, temp varied 40-44C. Just keep moving, fluid intake was 4.4 litres. Not dead just yet.
  12. I wouldn't lose a second's sleep if they nuked the rest of the middle east back into little pieces of sand. A desert reclamation program. Call it a win for humanity.
  13. How would the banks know? I have accounts with Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn. Who would be notifying every bank of my death in case I held an account with them?
  14. I asked about a letter confirming residency December last year for new car & motorcycle licences, and also buying a new vehicle. A simple 'no, go to your embassy' was the response; I'd had a letter in the past for licences, change of policy. That was five months ago - who knows, could have changed again by now. Though the good news was DLT / vehicle registration would accept yellow book/ pink non-Thai ID card for both. Have read that some embassies (incl USA) will no longer issue letters of residence either - go full circle and back to zero.
  15. Don't exaggerate! It's only nine years: December 2015 Or we've entered the multiverse?
  16. As is Friday 12 April a 'special' public holiday to extend the Songkran weekend
  17. Whenever I read of these captures and 'released back into the wild' I'm interested in just how far 'the wild' is away from where they found it. I'd pay the bus fare for it to go a long way away please.
  18. Biked to Prasae in Rayong province yesterday, the park area is currently a large construction site with new walkways, lawns and gardens underway, HTMS Prasae is still accessible across the earthworks
  19. 187cm, 84kg. Here I'm mainly a cyclist, aim for 1000km/mth on a street -tyred mtb. Once a full-time triathlete and ocean swimmer in NZ/Aust, I was 95-100kg; only recreational swimming now. I had 6yrs going to NZ on fixed-term contracts, mostly in Wellington a fantastic location for real hill running, highlight four trips to Queenstown/ Arrowtown mountain trails, longest run was Arrowtown - Macetown return (Motatapu Track) 31km with 22 river crossings in 2022. Ran the cleverly named Big Hill both directions I'd rate as the hardest terrain, one at night, one in May with ice and light snow. Beautiful area with challenging trails. No trails here, all road. Local club trains evenings at the naval airstrip, unexciting doing lengths of the 1050m runway. The cycling is more enjoyable, the running here is sociable, some have had prize money, others lucky prize draws. But always another tshirt!
  20. New Zealand has some beaches where driving is permitted, and each year there's fatalities as a result, often roll-overs at speed. This from Oreti Beach, Invercargill, where police were called due to 'disorderly behaviour' on the beach. NZ Police car was bogged in the incoming tide, abandoned, a write-off
  21. We're the happy running couple; our seventh recent running event last Saturday night, traveled to Trat for a night run. Start 8.30pm 29C and 91% humidity. Still a lot of heat up off the asphalt at night I'd say we were definitely in the 'realfeel' of 34C. Iced drink stops along the course. And an armed Tourist Police man on a mountainbike, in case of heat-treated collapse he could issue a mercy killing. That was our second night run, others have been 4-6am starts. I do my cycling between hours of 10am-3pm, less traffic, dogs asleep. Yesterday 12-2pm 37C and realfeel 43C. Think I've successfully adapted, but not quite ready to wear 100% body cover just yet as our friends do. Water-electrolyte mix at around one litre per hour, and the occasional ice-cream at 7-11 though have to rush that before it melts away. If I ever have thoughts about being too hot, remind myself of too many miserable cold years in New Zealand.
  22. Understood the (NZ) Day brothers remained in custody, having pleaded not guilty, police opposed bail, and they are waiting on a court date which could be months away according to the interview held with one of their wives.
  23. At this point you should have made the tv comedy 'boing' noise and laughed it off with the driver. 'sweating the small things'
