  1. I will be spending two days in Savannakhet getting a visa, and was wondering if anyone had a good recommendation for how to go about exchanging currency.

I was there once in the past and I remember just doing it in regular shops and restaurants, but nearly always getting a rate that was very generous to the other party.  I also can't remember if it's better to exchange THB or USD for LAK.

Any suggestions from those knowledgeable and experienced would be appreciated.

One thing that I can remember is not to exchange more than I'll need because it's essentially worthless once I cross back into Thailand.

    Thanks!  ????

Daily News said in their online headline: "The day will never come when I will apologize to foreigners".

I've been told by a reliable source that this is not an accurate translation.

Apparently, he actually said, "I will never apologize to that foreigner". And he's referring to the specific person who refused the face mask.

Apologies if this has already been posted.

  3. And after looking at the application, a few more questions needing clarification:

    Section 1

    a. I'll be checking "Non-Immigrant Visa".  Should I write "One Year, Multi Entry" next to it?

    Section 2

    a.  For Present Address (Lao PDR), I guess I should put my hotel.  Correct?

    Section 4

    a. Purpose of Visit, I'll write "Visit and support my wife".  Is that enough?

    b. Date of arrival in Thailand--Are they referring to the day I'll be entering Thailand after I get the visa?  So, the next day.

    c. Date of previous visit to Thailand--This would be the last Thai immigration entry stamp?

    d. Duration of proposed stay.  Should I put 90 days?

    Section 5

    a. Name, address and telephone number of guarantor in Lao PDR.  I'll have to leave this one blank, I guess.

    b. Name, address and telephone number of guarantor in Thailand.  This will be my wife?

Thanks in advance.  A lot of the above is probably common sense, but I just want to make sure I don't create any problems for myself.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Or you could apply for a 60 day extension to visit your wife. That would allow you to stay until May.

    Sorry I missed this earlier.

Can I go to my local immigration office and apply for a 60 day extension before my O visa expires at the end of March?  If so, that would be great because my schedule just changed slightly.   Does the 60 days begin from the day you apply or the day your visa expires?

I assume the cost on this would be 1900 THB.  Is that right?

  5. I'm on a multi-entry Non-O based on marriage, that expires in about 3 weeks.  I just returned to Thailand through Suvarnabhumi a few days ago which permits me to stay until the end of March.  Due to my schedule this upcoming  spring, it would be very convenient for me to stay in Thailand until mid April and not the end of March. So, I was thinking I would do a border run in 3 weeks to pick up the extra 3 weeks this spring.

If I were to do this, is it possible that I could be denied entry or get something less than 90 days?

I did a land border crossing about 3 months ago, and the IO wrote "land crossing" on my passport next to the stamp.  This is the first time any IO has written this in my passport, so it's the primary reason for my concern regarding this possible upcoming land crossing.  Needless to say, if there was a chance I would get fewer than 90 days or even denied entry, then I wouldn't do the land crossing.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Apologies if the above isn't clear.  I'll happily supply any additional info as required.

On a side note, those of you below 60, get a teaching position, register yourself to the Thai social security, stick the job out for a year and then make regular payments of less than 400 baht a month after U quit the job if you don't like it.!

Is this still possible?  I remember reading about it in the past, but thought it had been phased out for foreigners.

Immigration will only do the residence certificate for the province where you are living.

They will issue one for the house you wife is renting. There is no requirement for the rental agreement to be in your name.

    Thanks for your reply, ubonjoe.

Sometimes I'm not all that bright, so just to clarify:

If only my wife's name is on a rental contract in Phayao, the Phayao immigration office will issue me a residence certificate?

And should I assume that if the Phayao immigration office does issue the residence certificate, then the Phayao Transport Office will accept it?

BTW, I should have mentioned earlier that I'm on a one year, multi-entry non O visa.

    Thanks again.  ????

  8. I need a residence certificate from immigration to renew my driver's license.  Normally this wouldn't be a concern, but here's my situation:

My wife and I are renting a house and she's on the lease but I'm not.  In theory we could change the lease to add my name, but I don't want to bother the landlord if it's not entirely necessary.  For one thing she lives far from here and it would be a headache just dealing with Thai Post/EMS.

However, my wife does own a house in different province than the one we're living in (800 km from present location) and I'm listed on the tabien bahn.

So basically I have two questions:

    1. Will my local immigration office give me a residence certificate for a tabien bahn from another province?
    2. Will the local Transport Dept. renew my license with a residence certificate that is based on a tabien bahn from another province?

    Thanks very much.

  9. Headed for Mukdahan tomorrow, and was surprised by something I saw in this thread.

Can someone who has recently been to the consulate in Savanakhet please confirm if they require a letter from my wife requesting that the consulate grant me a Non- O visa based on marriage, or is that only for other consulates/embassies?

And if it is required, what should be included in the letter?

    Thank you!

  10. Hi,

I recently got a 1 year, multi entry, Non-O visa based on marriage and I have a few questions:

    1. Is it valid for one year from the date I first enter Thailand or the date the visa was issued?
    2. Does this visa allow me to enter and leave Thailand as many times as I want during the visa's validity or is there a limit to the number of entries?
    3. Do I have to leave Thailand at least every 90 days?
    4. Can I wait until the year is almost expired before applying for an extension?
    5. If I can wait until the year is up to apply for the extension, should I put 400,000 baht in a regular Thai bank account in the 10th month?

After reading other threads I think I know the answers to one or two of those questions, but would be more grateful for confirmation.

    Thanks!

  11. Hi,

I imagine this topic has been done before, but I couldn't find a recent thread.

My wife got a 10 year US visa 8 years ago, and since then she changed her first name and also needed to renew her passport.  So, not only isn't the US visa in her most recent passport, but it also has her old first name.  She has the original (and translations of) our marriage certificate and name change form, but she's a little bit worried about what might happen when she arrives at the immigration counter at JFK.

Does anyone have any personal experience with this type of situation?

    Thanks very much!

  12. Are there rules about carrying a loaded handgun in Thailand?  I know in some countries you need a special permit or license to carry a "concealed weapon".  Is this true in Thailand?  What about having a loaded weapon in a car?

Yes, I'm asking because this is apparently what my idiot brother in law is up to these days.
