  1. Should be no problem since flight from Russia arrives at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and her Bangkok airways flight to Chiang Mai leaves from there also.

As for need to recheck baggage ....probably ...as it is an international flight to a domestic flight so needs to go through customs and rechecked.

1 1/2 hours should (whistling.gif ) be OK ....again depends on if her flight is late from Russia, does her bag come out early, how long is the que at immigration etc.

ya i thought she will have to recheck the bag , so she will go thur passport control then baggage pick up. well is she misses the 10 am she can catch the 1 .15 flight i think

  2. my wife is flying back to chiang mai from russia has her mulit entry ect . my question is after landing dose she go pick up her baggage then go to passport control or go to passport control first .? she has connection flight to chiang mai 1 hr 30 min after she arrives will she have the time to make that flight?and will she have to recheck her baggage on the domestic airline ? everyone dose it different in phuket we did passport control first no need to pick up bag and recheck it . any help would be great

  3. you know most real goverments would not allow this burning and would control it . so the air would meet a safe standard . i know in the us that the deq whould be finning and forcing them to stop burning. and regulate it when and how you are to burn whats up with thai gove do they care about the health of the north ? nso when will they stop the burnning

  4. i total agree i have been going to patong and phuket for 2 seasons now. then i moved to chiang mai wow what a differance, it all about priceing . taxies are cheeper along with every thing . and more to do, it is busy here with travelers, why so much more to offer. weather is good. a bit cool at night but good all day and warm so ya i think the whole island is over priced .but they bring that on them selfes . its called greed. if you want the beach here bbk is an 500 miles away i,24 hrs by air. here great food resturants ect , i mean really 700 bah to patong from air port lol 200 bh for taxies lol you can go any where here for 60 bh for 2 on a red box or 120 for a tuk tuk. and all the ripoffs there. ill trade a good place to live any day over a beach and last time i was there in sept and the beach was so dirty water so bad who would want to go in i saw lots of people not wanting to. and the jet skie guys the beaches are dirty with tons of trash broken bits of would dirty streets so much stuff floating in the water you could feel it hit your legs . so why go there ?? drinks and every thing so high iyts all a ripp of .

The Russians are broke. As are the Americans, the Brits, the Chinese, and most everyone else. (Except for the Nordic nations).

Brits?...I’m not skint and neither are many of the quality Brit tourists I know that visit Lalaland. No Sir, I think there are many and varied reasons why folk are not going there...kop some of NKM’s sermons for the unfortunate low-down. Arh, the good old days... coffee1.gif

"I think there are many and varied reasons why folk are not going there" - it's not tsunamis, bird flu, swine flu, terrorist threats, military coups, volcano eruption, exchange rates, visa laws etc etc.

Phuket no longer offers a value for money holiday, when compared to its competitors.

People are still holidaying, just not to Phuket, any more.

  5. Is this a new issue? Last year I left the US from LA, oneway to Chiang Mai. Didn't have an issue. Same when I went from Thailand to Viet Nam. And when I left Viet Nam. Same when I flew from Thailand to Ecuador. All on oneway tickets. Never had a problem. Is it just my innocent face that tells them I'm not up to no good?

no i have done same i always do one way tickets. to many country's that allow 30 60 or 90 DAY stays w/o visa. never been asked one. last year flew to thailand didnt have. same with this year never been asked. for onward ticket cyprus , egypt germany ect and never been asked to have a return ticket i dont like round trip tickets if i decide to go some where else i can, kinda of like country hopping lol

  6. The 30 day entry you will get can be extended for a further 30 days once you are in country, at the immigration office wherever you will stay. You will not have an issue at immigration at the airport when you arrive. The issue you might have is at the airport in the US when you check in. They can deny boarding if you don't have a visa or onward ticket within 30 days.

well last june my wife and i flew to thailand with no return ticket they didnt care. got 30 and extended 30 and there was no problem. even when i flew to cyprus for a month no one asked. and that was a different air line. same with egypt got 30 day when arrived in both . just call and find out but most ticket desks wont ask or if they do ask just you dont need one. some times its better to just by one way ticket and then buy one when your ready to leave. they dont ask when you get to thailand any way, never had them ever ask

  7. Star Avenue also hosts the new CM branch of Sunrise Tacos. IMO Miguel's is much better, but ST it might be worth visiting for a change of pace.

I took one look and passed. Food didn't look very Mexican. I think they used stock photos in the menu - but I am not sure of course. Run by a couple of young Thai guys. Rent has to be super expensive and the 3 times I have been at Star Avenue the last 2 weeks there has only been one or two tables occupied. I wish them luck.

Edit: UG - is this place a branch of the place near Th. Khao San in Bangkok? Maybe I'm thinking of another place in that area.

well i found the salsa kitchen, and has a pretty good food was surprised in fact . being from the states and been to mexico a few times.its not bad where is Miguel's located

  8. well i like that idea wife wants to do the lantern and let it fly i dont know where to get one here in cm to knew here i guess but that sounds good for our first time here. neither one of us speak thai yet lol but will

Pedantry aside (yes, this event is Western New Year, as opposed to Thai New Year in April), I'm going to do the usual:

    1. Park the kids somewhere.
    2. Drive into town, avoiding the most likely spots where cars with Bangkok license plates build the mother of all traffic jams.(Moat between Chiang Mai Gate and Thapae specifically. And Nimmanhaemin / Huay Kaew of course, but I avoid that area at the best of times.)
    3. Bars on Loy Kroh Road, near the moat. With so many people of all ilk and gender around, most will have a real hard time maintaining seediness standards, making for an environment suitable for all. Typical barfly crowd goes in hiding in MM Soi 2.
    4. Before midnight walk to Thapae Gate. Count down to 2015.
    5. Walk on to Zoe / Reggae Area / Kad Boon Yoo. Be impressed by the metric F#&ton of people there. Give up getting a drink and get one from a smaller bar or 7-Eleven.
    6. Walk all the way back. Unless Jesus manifests himself as a tuk tuk driver, miraculously offering to drive us for under 100 baht. Might even get a loom and stay the night, only driving back in the morning. You know, police checkpoints crazy drunk drivers.

In summary though Thapae Gate is good for half an hour and the actual countdown to New Year. Just pick bars or restaurants you like before and after. Shout out for Tiger Kingdom In Town if you don't appreciate Loy Kroh even in this family friendliest of guises, and can get a reservation.

Plan B Bar in case Loy Kroh doesn't work for any reason: Inter Bar on Thapae Rd, near the gate. Because usually not very busy, but hopefully 'just right' on this night. (Also keep other bars in mind that would normally be dead, but could just be in the Goldilocks Zone on NYE.)

All of the above assumes you're not CM Expat Club types, easily fooled by fancy organized hotel events that'll bore you to tears. smile.png

Also assumes you're not 20-somethings out for a proper party, then Spicy/Lucky/Bubble is on the cards after Zoe.

  9. I should think that the best place to celebrate a "Western New Year" would be in a western country.

My wife and I are going to celebrate a real Thai New Year with neighbours. That means a barbecue washed down with copious amounts of Lao Khao and other homebrews.

By midnight we're usually all pissed and hogwild. The fireworks we set off are positively unsafe...

If I wanted to stay safe I would never have left my homecountry.

    Sawadee Phi Mai!

ok i guess if you are going that way let me restate it. LOL whats happen around chia

    ng mai

  11. I'm going to go along with many of the other posters, get a fixed line installed and use WiFi and save your aircard data for when you are out and about., and won't need to be worrying about data capacity allowance (BTW you will see this often referred to my the mobile providers as 'fair use policy')

Now don't take this the wrong way, but you don't seem too tech savvy compared to many of us 'sad tech geeks' who gleefully get close to orgasm at the sight of traceroute results! So my advice would be get whoever you chose as the fixed line provider to setup the WiFi for you in the house and on your laptop.

I use both TOT & 3BB, and 3BB seemed in my instance at least, to be the more user friendly in terms of in house support

well i have 3bb at 15mb lol and skype is so bad cant vid and is so slow its slower than dial up i live in condo that uses a dslphone line that sucks 3bb came out but say all good cant upgrade to fiber i think 3bb sucks ass worst internet service i have ever seen

  13. Since we are on the topic of the baht and exchange rate.... If I have Baht and wanted to exchange to US dollar to balance my cash between the two, can I just go to any of these exchange places on the street and exchange. Do I need a plane ticket ?

no most street exchanges don't do that. or don't have the us green back or wont. better to go to bank and some banks wont either i think its about haveing it on hand bbk will do it .not the mail ones a regular branch

  14. My wife and I are Scots (and of retirement age). We went from Tourist to single entry Non-Imm O in September and a couple of weeks ago got our first annual extensions. The first we did in Vientianne, the second at the local CM office. Both episodes were difficult but not because of any such issues you mention. Just the unavoidable loss of some otherwise productive days of your remaining lives and battling through some mind-blowing bureaucracy.

Did you convert the tourist visa to a Non-Imm O or go to Vientiane for a new Non O Visa?

i did my tr to retirement Non o in phucket was easy in at 8:30am out at 10:30 am as long as you have all the paperwork it easy, did the extention her in CM that was a bit harder time wise, 4:30 AM OUT BY 11:30 lol long day

  15. The process is the same for any nationality. One needs to have all the requirements reuired for an one-year extensions of stay, and at least 15 days remaining of allowed stay. Then it can be asked to come a second time for the conversion, then possibly a third and fourth time for the extension.

For this reason many people prefer to get the non-imm 'O' visa in Laos, Vientane or Savannakhet.

you never said if this was for retirerment . or not i did one not long ago its the same for all . and i did in country a tr to a retirement non Ojust had to have all the paperwork and i did it all my self, not that hard.

  16. now i have read that if you are from the us and have a drivers license you can drive here in Thailand legally for 3 months.i read that on the us state dept web site, just like in romania you can drive for 6 months on a us drivers license.

The reason for a scooter I guess is cost. It is by far the cheapest to rent and also by far gets the best gas mileage. The smaller 100cc scooters get like 100 MPG or 2.8 liters per 100 Kilometers . I drove 100cc scooters pretty far and pushed them probably to max speed in Philippines. You are correct, it probably isn't the most comfortable way to travel but it does work. Those little 100cc scooters can go quite fast also.

I've got good endurance so for some reason I just keep going and love the feel of a 100cc bike going top speed. I am going to do lots of stops also, so will probably only be on the road maybe 5 hours tops a day.

I really am just planning this as I go along at this point. I plan on staying a couple of months so I don't have to rush all of this.
