  1. There are clearly two people who are in the wrong here. Firstly, the so called freind who is gossiping about Tom to all his freinds in the Pub. He should have kept his mouth shut and descretely told Tom when he returned. The second, who is even worse, is the Op who has now spread this gossip on TV so now all of Toms accuantances know about it. It is none of their business and they have no right to know and definitely no right to spread it further. If I were Tom i would ditch the lot of you and get new more loyal freinds.

India is getting fed up with this, so a pre-announced bail would solve the issue of finding acceptance for the family, maybe.
Or, maybe, a good old fashioned honey and milk bath, that is really scary, and should make any criminal think five times before committing a hideous crime.

Nevertheless, imho, the roots are deeper in society and its customs.

It used to be that girls were not preferred since to wed one off a dowry was required.
Now, a shortage of some 22 million Females in 15-64 years olds creates a lot of desperate men.
That is some 6 percent plus the natural relation ship friction makes a very large group,
Say 10 - 15 + percent of males, some 40 -60 million men that cannot find a wife because there aren't enough women.

(This is not intended as an excuse, please see first paragraph, just an observation.)

With they way they treat femakes, I'm sure nobody wants to raise daughters. I'm surprised the mum left a 8 yr old to a cousin. I would not let anyone touch mine without parent's supervision.

Read the OP again. It was not an 8 Year old child it was a baby 8 months old.

200 baht "administration" fee is if you need to have your photos taken.

Anyhoo.... I was on extension of stay before and seriously it was too much hustle for me as I like to leave on short trips out of Thailand anyway a few times a year. I find that multi-o visa works out to be a better deal in the end for me plus my wife really hates taking a day off work and get drilled at immigration.

I had a photo but it was not accepted. Don't know why.

  4. Previously I had been coming to Thailand with a new Multiple Entry Visa based on Retirement because I just happened to be out of the country when my visa expired. However, last year I was still in Thailand so I obtained an extension of stay which cost 1900 baht. I assumed that this extension of stay would include the same terms as my original multi entry visa. However, in January this year I needed to travel to a ceremony abroad for 10 days. On my leaving the country by plane at Suvarnabhumi airport I was told by immigration that I needed a Re entry permit to return and was shuffled off to a different place to get one at a cost of 1000 baht plus 200 baht admin costs. Total cost 1200 baht. My extension of stay expires in the middle of February when I shall renew it at a cost of 1900 baht. Can anyone explain why I need a re entry permit if I leave Thailand for a short holiday? It strikes me that I may be better off timing my travels for when my extension of stay expires and return with a new Multiple Entry Visa. This would be cheaper if I travel often as is my intention.

Who needs all that stuff to make a cup of coffee?  I use coarsely ground beans, boiling water and a tea strainer. Mix the grounds with the water, stir and pass thru the strainer into the cup. Yeah, some few dregs on the bottom but they don't bother me.

    Instant coffee strictly 'EMERGENCY ONLY'.

What a Philistine you are. Do you also warm up the cold leftover coffee the next day?

The best coffee I have ever tasted is filtered using a medium roast Brazilian bean properly ground (hard to find here in Thailand). No milk or sugar just plain black. Filtered using a new filter paper each time I brew. Never, never use these plastic reusable filters.

Hate the Thai made coffee called Amercano which is nothing more than Espresso with added water. Terrible stuff!

But I suppose if you added milk and a pound of sugar lke they serve it here you could drown the taste.

  6. I dont understand how you come to such a high cost. I have just completed my visa extension based on retirement using income of 65000 baht per month. Cost for Income Affidavit from the British embassy was £52 (approx 1450 baht) including postage. Printouts from my uk  online account are free. No translation is required as others have pointed out. I then coupled this with a printout from my Thai online Bank Account again no cost. Total cost 2350 baht.

This is nowhere near the 6000 baht you refer to.

I opened up a sterling account with krongthai bank a while back, but shortly after closed it, it was PITY, you would transfer money from UK bank in sterling and deposit in Thailand in sterling, you could not have an atm card obviously, so it meant to draw money out would be a trek to the main branch of the bank where i had set the account up, then change to BHT which the first exchange seemed quite hefty can't remember now how much, but after that changing to BHT was free, in the end it just was'nt worth the hassle!

Why would anyone in their right mind want to keep stirling. It is falling like a lead zeplin. It is better to convert it to Thai baht and keep it in a normal thai bank account.

In any event a Stirling account will not help with the Euros

  8. Why throw anything recyclable in the rubbish bin. We sort into cardboard boxes in the garage; clear glass, coloured glass, cardboard, paper, aluminium tins, other metal tins, pet bottles, other plastic. Then every couple of months we take it all to the recycle plant and sell it. Don't get much but every little helps as they say at Tesco and it keeps Thailand tidy.

In the normal way, if you hadn't noticed just about every market in Thailand has at least one vendor of chewing tobacco.

If it was a Swede selling then i doubt it was chewing tobacco which is an American habit. It is more likely to be what the Swedes call "Snus" which is a type of snuff placed under the lip. It comes loose or in small pouches. Revolting stuff if you swallow it by accident.

    • a Jack Coke costs in local currency the equivalent of US$ 16,- to US$ 30,-- in a dance club,
    • the mini skirts are not tight and high enough,
    • ....but the worst of all,  nobody even hints for a bribe to get the work done, people respect speed limits and road laws... awful  !!! :cheesy:

How easy is it to kill a tokay gecko?  Hanging about where the brightest lights are, depending of the prevalence of them at the particular estate, I reckon I could kill 5+ a night.

The gardener has at least quintupled his salary overnight.  He goes home to his family loaded with cash and they ask where it came from?  He tells the truth and of course nobody believes him and instead assume he has robbed a 7 11 somewhere.

Then when the supply at the estate is drying up, just start on the rest of the province and pretend they came from around the estate.  Eventually he has to call it a day or his paymaster will get suspicious, and then he spends the next 5 years asking other foreigners if they want him to bring them tokay heads on a stick for 500 baht a piece.

I don't know about Tokey but I used to catch Iguana in the West Indies using a length of wire with a fish hook on one end. The other end I attached to something solid, Usually a wooden stake in the ground. Then place a lump of raw meat on the fish hook and leave overnight. In the morning there was invariably a large Iguana caught on the hook.

If they were large (approx 1 m) then we took them for eating with the locals who had taught us this technique. Otherwise we just let them  go.

you can be sure, in Eesan you still find those cozy hotels where you almost get electrocuted during taking a shower

this not so rare occurence counts as one of the adventures of the Eesan . . .

a lot of things have gone for the better, but a lot of things have just stayed the same

Thus said, another obvious fact hit my mind . . . . .

After having seen the the zillionth waterfall and the thousandth cliff and the umpteenth temple, the highlights of the Eesan will soon dissolve & dissapear in the eye of the viewer . . . . .

I don't think you know much about Isaan. Firstly it is not spelt or pronounced Eesan but Isaan. Secondly there is no reason to stay in the sleezy rundown hotels which are mostly used for short time stays. I am a little surprised that you are familiar with them. There are plenty of resort hotels with high standards and of good quality.

If you are bored with the fantastic panorama views, the incredible artwork in many of the temples and the beautiful waterfalls then why not participate in the incredible traditional culture which thankfully is still practiced in Isaan. Having recently enjoyed and participated in the Loi Krathong festival I can thoroughly recommend them. If these things do not interest you then I really think Isaan is not for you. It would be better to go to Pattaya where you can enjoy the pleasures of the flesh and where you can help perpetuate the myth that all the beautiful Isaan women have migrated there.

We are not leaving to shop in the "bargain basement" we are leaving because we are British and want to be governed by our OWN elected government who will carry out the wishes of the British people......not some jumped up "johnnie foreigners" in Europe telling us what is best for OUR country......and paying a ridiculously high price for it....end of

Then it is a shame that your elec ted Government hasn't got a clue what to do or how to do it.

This is a long thread already so not sure if this has been said-

My landlord has successfully used a sonic device in three different houses.

It emits a sound that humans cannot hear, but apparently the rats find the noise very disturbing and they quickly leave.

I have used these sonic devices. They work well almost too well. They also scare away any cats, dogs, birds etc. If you like to see birdlife in your garden then don't use them.

What utter codswallop! Why are other EU countries so much nicer, so egalitarian so civilised. You're blaming the wrong target for the undoubted UK ills.

It disappoints me very much that a lot of contributions to the Brexit debate is dominated by Britain's loss of money and sovereignty. Thatcher's „I want my money back“ comes to my mind. Imagine, all EU members – and especially the paying members - would be dominated by the same idea.

Since WW II and China's Deng Xiaping's reform the world has changed 'a little bit'. Britain, France. Germany, Spain, The Netherlands etc. are dwarfs as single states against the USA, (Russia?) and the new world power China. Wouldn't it be useful to have a mighty bloc as an equivalent instead of stubborn single states? The EU as block has a quality and strength as equivalent to the new world powers, as single powers they are a laughing stock, a pawn in the hands of the powerful.

It's an historic wisdom that unions force some states to swallow bitter pills as an equivalent to a better future. Even if you believe in the bible, the world hasn't been made within one day. Look at the history of the USA. So give the union (EU) a chance to eliminate the flaws, although losing some sovereignty. It's worthwhile.

BTW, Brexit was only the result of the majority of the voters, not the people! Sometimes – and especially in this case – it's better to have a parliament to vote about such a difficult decision. Why? The members of the parliament in general are a little bit more intelligent than the voting sheep. You don't believe it? Make a referendum: Do you want a 50% tax cut? The majority of the voting sheep will answer YES.

That's what happened in Britain; brain and sanity down, temporarily influenced emotion high. All this is now reflected in the Brexit negotiations. And the EU should reward this? Brexiteers, think about what England would do, if Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland would like to leave GB - after a positive referendum. Shaking their hands and open the wallet? I don't believe.

Puck you are so correct. The Brexiteers never analysed their position or the consequences of their vote.Their vote was purely emotional. "We don't want Brussels telling us what to do", "No more foreigners" they said without a thought about if they were refugees or economic migrants.

You are right that it was not a majority vote. Only 37% of the population voted for Brexit.

I fear the breakup of the UK is yet to come. Scotland will be eager to leave as soon as the exit is completed. Then followed by NI who will want to keep their trade as is with Eire. This will destroy the UK as it is today.

You failed to answer my simple question. Please try again.

And yes, UK has benefited significantly by being a member of EU.

Wait no more. EU will take away UK's mighty banking sector as it does no longer belong to the EU economy. We'll take away your car manufacturing jobs as well and bring those jobs back to EU.

    Because, why not?

Strong UK is not a problem for EU. But if UK is a competitor and wishes to gain benefits from EU, well.. we are not in the business of supporting monetarily well off outside countries like UK. Why should we be?

Oilinki, I fear you are right but I hope you are wrong, otherwise all us Brits will be getting very depressed. Give me another Koskenkorva.
