  1. Dont know who told you this, it is true you can work on a non-O, but you must also have a work permit to do any type of work, does not matter if you are getting paid or not. Also, wanting to work in construction is prohibited work.

it does not matter what your wife can or cant not do in the UK, this is Thailand with different rules. Ex-pats are prohibited from doing many types of jobs. Farming, construction work are on the list. For teaching you can do this, but there must be a company that can hire you and to provide the work permit. As stated the company need to have registered capital of minimum 2 million baht and have 4 Thai employees. I don't know where mjnaus got the info on only needing 2 never heard of this. i have owned and operated two companies here in Thailand and have always had to have minimum 4 employees. Yes, they will let you slide for a little while on the employees when first starting, but not to the extent of 2 years, 6 months but don't expect that to be any longer.

Please do your home work on this and check with ministry of labor about the rules for work permit, don't take what I'm telling you and what anyone else tells you to be the 100% truth. The consequences for working without a work permit is fines and jail time and possible deportation. your wife and other Thai's may tell you this is their country they know what is needed, again don't listen and find out for yourself, many Thais believe they know when they don't. Just trying to give you helpful advise.

I do like the idea of the computer shop they always look busy, but there are regulations on this to as for the hours being open and students etc. So again please make sure you know everything yourself and don't rely on others to provide the information. The Thai saying " mai pen rai" does not work when the govt is looking to crack down on things. Be careful with the farming, you get someone upset with you and they report you are doing farming work does not matter if it's in your wife's name or not, you will have problems.

    Good Luck to you!!!

    Thanks for the heads up,

this is the reason why I posted, as I am suspicios of people in the village getting jealous, so I need to know what I can and cant do according to the rules of my visa.

Sounds like I'll be a house husband until I become a citizen, Im sure I will be able to go and hunt frogs at night as I need to eat, surely they cant prohibit this, LOL.

Still cannot get my head round, not being allowed to get a job, this is ridicules, the fact that I am the man of the house I have two children to feed and a wife to keep happy and according to the rules of the visa I am the supporting person, sorry but this is an unenlightened rule and out and out stupidity. I will definatley be getting legal advice regarding this (watch this space).

  2. Thanks for the Imput,

I know what I will do know, I will apply for a Non O single entry which will be valid for 90 days, then before this expires I will get this extended at the Immigration for a full year(with no border runs just address reporting every 90 days) doing it this way I wont do any border runs.

    Thanks everyone

  3. You can not work without a work permit. Who told you that? You may or may not be able to obtain a work permit from a non immigrant O visa (some office will issue and some will not) but you can not work without that work permit and that is tied to a specific job.

    Sounds Strange,

so if I extend my visa for the next 3-5 years, Im not allowed to work on the farm or from home, strange law, my wife came to England and is allowed to work on a spouse visa, this dosent quite add up, Sounds like I will just have to work without pay.

  4. You must find a job that will support issue of a work permit and most of what you have mentioned would not qualify. Working for yourself would require a 2 million baht company (although not all in cash) set up and for work permit issue believe at least 4 Thai on payroll and even then job description would have to fit as most manual labor type jobs can not be done. Each work permit is specific for the job and location.

So are you saying, On a Non O visa I am not allowed to Work?

  5. You can't "legally" do that on an O visa, but many teachers teach privately despite such laws. I have never had any trouble doing private tutoring, but just be aware of it things hit the fan, which would be a next to 0% chance.

If you have a Thai wife type O visa you can work legally - I've done so for years. However, you cannot work legally with a type O retirement visa.

This is the responses I was hoping to hear, thanks for clearing this up otherstuff.

  6. Thanks for the replies,

I am expecting to go down the route of an extension based on marriage, but I would like to make some income during this time rather than just use my savings, we are thinking firstly of making a internet shop from our house, private tuition for computer lessons and teaching basic English work on my rubber farms and I would possibly like to do some labouring for a local builders.

This is the reason I am asking for info regarding a work permit. Any further Input would be great.

    Thanks Lee

  7. Hi All,

I am going to live in Thailand on a Non O visa this year, in my wifes village. I am well known as I have been going there for a long time and made friends there, in conversations, friends have made remarks such as "would I teach their kids English or they would book lessons with me for the children".

I am not a qualified teacher nor do I have a TEFL, but I have taught my own children to speak, read and write English, my son lived in Thailand for the first 4 years of his life before he came to England and adopted the English language after 6 months, it was hard work but valuable Experience.

Can I teach basic English on a private basis within the village? or are there laws to prohibit me from doing this.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Regards Lee

  8. You can apply within the final 30 days of your permision to stay.

Once successful you report to Immigration every 90 days.

    Marriage Requirements

    (6) In case of marriage with a Thai lady, the husband who is an alien must have an average annual income of not less than 40,000 baht per month or a money deposit in a local Thai bank of not less than 400,000 baht for the past 2 months for expenses within a year.

Letter from your Thai Bank showing balance and up to date bank book.

    OR.

Letter from your Embassy showing income. Now may also need proof of income as back up.

    Marriage Certificate

    Marriage Registry entry.

Wife's Tabbien Baan and ID Card.

    Your Passport.

    Copies of everything.

Photos of you and your Wife in and around the house.

A map showing the way to your house.

Passport size photos and 1,900 Baht fee.

Take your Wife to be interviewed.

You will be given a 30 day under consideration stamp.

Go back in a month and get the remainder.

    Thanks Litebeer,

what is the marriage registry entry?

  9. There is no marriage visa, you apply for a one year "Extension of Permission to Stay". Advantage is you don't have to do a border run every 90 days. Apply with 30 days remaining on a current permission to stay. Financial requirements are 400,000 in a Thai bank, or proof of 40,000 Baht per month income.

can I do this straight away when I arrive

  10. Thanks Beechguy,

I am aware that I have to cross the Thai border every 90 days and gain a further 90 days, after visiting the Immigration website I read that I would be able to notify Immigration of my intentions to remain longer than 90 days, does this mean that I would not have cross the border? if so can I do this at the Ubon office?

http://www.immigration.go.th/ click link then has a option of remaining longer than 90 days

    Regards Lee

  11. when you ask about buying a pickup in Thailand, people always ask, do you want cap? I presume this to be a roof with windows for the back section of the car, is that right?

Also, I see a lot of different opions about driving licenses here, which seem to contradict each other. Can you insure/tax a car in thailand on a UK license.

    Regards Lee

  12. If you do not have an extension of stay from the immigration office it is unlikely they will issue such a letter. You can always obtain from your Embassy if that is the case.

    Thanks Lopburi,

What if I have a 1 year Non Imm O Visa would they issue a RC then or it has to be an Extension? and when you say " You can always obtain from your Embassy if that is the case". Do you know what documents are needed, do you need appointment, how long does it take and does it have to be in Bangkok.

  13. Thanks for the input everyone, some interesting options

Could I have some opinions on the following.

I get to Thailand - open a new Thai bank account - deposit into this account 1 million baht direct from my debit card.

I suggest this because on previous visits, when making transactions(ie withdrawing 10,000 baht from ATM), Im charged approxiemently £3 transaction fee and usually recieve a competitve exchange rate.

    Enlightenment required please.

Lee, before leaving the UK set up your HIFX account on their website (very simple to do). On arrival in Thailand open a SAVINGS account at a Thai bank depositing a nominal amount (I bank with Siam Commercial and you will have no problem opening an account with them) but decline any offers to sell you various insurances, you will also receive a debit card for ATM use. Once you have opened your account you can transfer your money using HIFX (it is very easy and there is an online tutorial to make it even easier). Transfer the money online to HIFX using your UK debit card and you will pay no fee to your UK bank, I can`t speak for other Thai banks but Siam commercial will not charge you a receiving fee either. You will receive an exchange rate close to the bank interchange rate (banks buying and selling to each other at preferential exchange rates). If you don`t use an intermediary like HIFX you will receive a much poorer exchange rate and on £20000 the money you lose would have bought you a new Honda Wave or similar runabout. HIFX are currency traders so they don`t need to charge a fee on large amounts like yours, they make their money trading bulk amounts of which yours will make up a tiny percentage. I have used them many times for large transactions and they are safe. They will keep you updated with your transaction details and if you so wish you can also speak to them on the phone. They will also record that your money originated from your UK bank. The larger the transaction the better the rate. You can even watch live exchange rates on their website and at the press of a button transact . You can also instruct them to transact once the baht reaches a specified amount.

    Regards Roj

    Thanks Roj,

Ive looked at the website, could well be the way to go, I will register with them.

  15. I have a full UK driving license, I will be moving to Thailand this year with a Non O visa and will be looking to buy a Isuzu Dmac, do I need a permit to drive or is my UK driving license acceptable.

    Hi Lee,

It's very easy and it doesn't really matter where in Thailand you'll apply. You should come on an international, then change it to a Thai license. Go to any transportation office and apply for it. When you're going there ,right before your UK one expires, you won't have to make a test. If so, you'll make a simple 20 questions theory test. Shouldn't you know the answers, 500 baht would fill them out for you.

The worst that could happen to you is a reaction test, a which color is it test, and a boring one hour movie in Thai about road safety.

You'll receive a one one year first, then a five years license.

Will cost you around 300 baht for a car and about the same amount for a motorcycle. Good luck! jap.gif

    Hi Sirchai,

    Thanks for the Info.

You said right before my UK license expires, my UK license expires in 2046.
