  1. You could form a 51/49 partnership with your wife and get a work permit.

The partnership would need 1 million baht registered capital and have 2 Thai employees (4 at some work permit offices). You wife can be one of the employees.

This guide from the BOI has a lot of useful info about company formation and etc, attachicon.gifBusinessGuide 2014.pdf

    Thanks Joe,

I have no problem doing it with my wife on 51/49, as we've been together for more than 10 years and have two beautiful children, there are no trust issues what so ever, but regarding the 1 million registered capital, does this mean you must deposit 1 million baht into a company account before you start?

The one million baht is the size of the partnership when you register it. You pay more to have a higher registered capital company..

It dose not have to be in the bank.

I've read on a couple of websites that, to support a work permit for a foreigner, you must open a company with 2 million baht registered capital, does anyone know if this is right.

  2. A WP does not require a degree, unless it is a requirement of th job itself. (You can't be a doctor if you didn't finish medical school).

The requirement for some teachers to have a degree comes from the teachers council, thus labour and immigration require it too. But for teaching at a language school etc as you seem to intend to do the regulations of the teachers council do no not apply, thus no need for a degree.

    thanks Mario

  3. Hi NiceLee

You can set up a company with your wife and obtain a work permit on the basis of your marriage visa. Like the poster above says you do need 4 (2 in areas) Thai staff to support the foreign work permit. As regards the company you need 3 shareholders: you can hold 49% and you can then have 2 Thais holding the other 51% in whatever proportion you decide. You can also be the sole Director. I work as a Legal Advisor at a law company in Pattaya, having previously been a Solicitor in England for 15 years. If you want more information please feel free to pm me privately to discuss details.

well you cant say things like this as I was banned for a few days for Spam.

I suggest the original poster sit down with pen and paper and do the math

    How much will this cost

    What is the return

can you pay the tax and social for all

    your wage

    wifes wage

    accounting fees

    work permit costs

    visa fees

    on going costs

can you run your business for 1 year without making any profit?

the list goes on and on

    there are many hidden costs

and many unexpected visitors will come for their cut

    beware

I would like to know more about the costs

  5. Hi All,

I've been living in Thailand for 2 years, I have a Non-O extension based on marriage, I'm thinking of opening a company or getting my wife to open a company and teaching English privately, as the demand seems to be quite high. I'm from the UK, I don't have a degree. Can anyone advise me on where I should start.

Also I don't know much at all about having a company here or the work permit situation.

    Thanks in advance.

    thread here - http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/528676-60-day-extension-based-on-marriage/

if you are going to have to go the Savanneket, in my mind its better to go now while they are still doing the multi entry non 'O' , maybe things will change in the future, a non 'O' will give you 17 months here including a 60 day extension on your final entry

Are they planning on stopping the service at Savanneket?

  7. Hi all,

I've been in Thailand for 2 years, I've done extensions based on my marriage twice already, but I'm now under the 400k in the bank due to buying a rice harvester, my extension expires in February, will I be able to get any further extension at the Immigration office, I've heard that they do a 1 or 2 month extension, if so are you limited to how many times you can do this and what are the requirements, I was hoping to be able to do this a couple times before having to go to Savanneket.

    Thanks everyone

You may be able to change reason of extension without leaving the country, depends by the local office.

Normal cost is Bt 25,000 for a year.

You need to do extend every 90 days for Bt 1,900. After one year, will need to leave country and obtain a new ED visa.

25,000 for an ED visa, that seems rather expensive

  9. Hi all,

I'm thinking about enrolling in a course here in Thailand, I currently have a Non O extension based on marriage.

If I enroll then should I change my visa to a ED visa, I would like to know some details about the ED visa

Can I change my non O extension to an ED visa without leaving the country, How much does the ED visa cost and do I have to do border runs.

    Regards to you all

  10. Hi all,

A question to you regarding your views on the best material or techniques you have come across whilst learning thai.

I am still at an intermediate level( I think), but so far for me, I started with the Benjawan Poomsan Becker books, which I feel was the main factor for me to learn to read thai, they offered a good basic vocab and basic sentence structure.

Now I am using Thaipod101, I am quite enjoying the material and I am in the middle of the intermediate level, I feel they offer different ways of saying things, which can be confusing, lots more vocab, lots of sentences and it has a good technique of reminding you of phrases that you learn't in previous lessons, but on the negative side it does have mistakes, which my wife say's certain words you would not use like the way they are showing, or some of the phrases are a bit over the top because they would say a certain phrase using about 50 words when my wife would say the same thing using about 10 words. I plan on sticking with it to the end.

I feel that the more I study the better I become at learning thai, but still cannot completely understand the dramas on TV or the news, or when someone wants to go into detail in a conversation, I feel I can make myself understood by using the vocab that I have, which sometimes the structure I use may not be correct.

If anybody has any reviews or opinions on there experiences or mine, I would like to here them

  11. Hello,

I have been looking at the criteria for permanent residence, as regards to criminal convictions does anyone know I can find out if I have anything on my record.

When I was in my early 20s I did get a caution from the police for fighting in a nightclub, I also received, what they call a bindover for one year, which is a good behaviour bond, which was also for fighting. This was over 15 years ago, I'm that they may have disappeared.

  12. Hi all, thanks for your comments,

I suppose when it comes to issues such as this Thailand is a very different place.

Anyway we offererd the school 10,000 and to my surprise they were grateful and didn't ask for more, we made it clear that this was a donation to the cause and feel the school is responsible for the care of all the children during the school hours and if a similar occurrence happens again, we will remove our children from the school. Fingers crossed for all the children that there are no more accidents and no more broken bones.

  13. Thanks all, for your replies.

We attended the meeting, there was me and my wife, the grandparents of the injured boy, nearly every teacher in the school and a rep from the insurances company.

After listening to the advise here, I said nothing and told my wife to be considerate regarding the boy but try to say as little as possible and not to accept liability.

The Grandparents gave there case of the trauma they have been through, which is completely understandable, they went on to say that they are ready to go to the newspapers and take the matter further, but would prefer to be able to come to a conclusion now to maintain a good relationship with all parties. They then directed their focus to my wife as regards to compensation, my wife agreed they should be compensated, but we believe it is the responsibility of the school to compensate them. The insurance rep basically stated that they would cover the medical expenses, which I believe was not a lot.

The grandparents requested 30,000 Bt to end the issue now, once they left, me and my wife sat down with the director of the school and they have asked if there is any way we can help towards the 30,000. they agree that it is there responsibilty but that our child was involved and the normal thai way would be that we would contribute to the compensation.

We have not yet decided if we will help or not, we spoke to a solicitor and to my surprise he agreed that we the parents and the school should come to an agreement, and that the last thing anybody wants is for this matter to go to court. If we were in England I would say no way, but I'm not. Furthermore what makes it more difficult is that, its not a lot of money considering the injury. If this was in England they would get a lot more.

So, now I'm thinking shall we give, if so how much, discussing with my wife, she thinks that we should not pay, but in order to maintain healthy relations it might not be such a bad idea, she suggested to me 5,000 and suggested well if we are gonna help then we should go to 10,000.

    please give your input again.

  14. In the UK, they cannot request compensation from the parents, baring in mind it was accidental, they could still seek compensation from the school through the courts, if it was a malicious act then they could seek prosecution, but the child would be a minor and cannot be prosecuted.

  15. Especially if this is a private school, many school enrollment agreements at least in the USA contain waiver of liability and hold harmless clauses unless negligence can be proven.

Yes, it is a private school, I think negligence can be proved, the kids could tell the story of what they were doing. this plank of wood they were able to obtain was 2 1/2 meters long 12 inch width and around 1 inch thick, shouldn't have been in the school and there was no playground monitor but here in thailand you see health and safety issue everywhere.

  16. Hello,

I was looking for a Law forum to put this in but there doesn't seem to be one.

about two months ago my son was at school, playing with some friends, they had a plank of wood and were using it as a seesaw over some climbing apparatus, one boy was at one end and my son jumped on the other end, the other boy who is quite a bit smaller than my son, fell off and broke his arm.

I am aware that the school assisted the family with medical cost and have been involved in the situation, but have recently learned that his injury could be quite serious and the doctor would need three months to diagnose, which would probably be in another month or so.

The school have contacted us to arrange a meeting with us the school and the injured boys parents, they also mentioned that they think the boys parents may be looking for compensation, but have not made clear who would be liable to pay this compensation.

Me and my wife believe that we should not be liable because our son was in the care of the school and they should not have been allowed to play a game like this, also I believe that the plank of would should not have been made available to them and he did not intentionally hurt the boy, he is a has kind nature and are 100% certain he would not intentionally hurt the boy.

    Any opinions would be appreciated
