I'll probably be able to renew my retirement status this December, but if at some point next year I'm faced with the choice of staying in-country indefinitely or leaving and staying out indefinitely or forever, I'll crack and leave.
It looks increasingly like I will face the same dilemma early next year too, and I have a 15 month old daughter to care for. I will have to go to settle my pension claim I think, but it looks like it will be very difficult to return.

Well, I was going to open a thread on this but I found out what happened and I just saw this.
In May my local *Bangkok Bank ATM kept giving me the expired message when it had months to go. I went into the branch (Bangkok suburbs) and they said don't worry come back 3-4 weeks before the expiry date and we will issue a new card. The card would let me make the transaction if I pressed the "continue" button.
Well I went on a long visit to the in-laws in July and found my card will not work at all in the nearest Bangkok Bank branch ATM now (still months before the expiry date on the card) and there was no "continue" option.
I was finally told by them that a new six digit PIN number has been introduced so "old" cards with four digit codes no longer work. They suggested it might still work in another Bank's ATM machine though.
The Up Country *Bangkok Bank branch of course cannot issue me a new ATM card unless I open an account with them, but I can use my book during bank opening times for a small fee (varies by amount withdrawn).
So, is the six digit code an excuse too and just more TIT face saving B/S? Does it happen to Thai customers, although I've seen one or two annoyed after using the ATM, my missus has a new card with a six digit code so I don't know for sure.

The Covid-19 situation means even a visit is off for now...
I have thought about doing this many times in the last 6 years none more than after I have been to VN for a few days holiday.
It is a few years since I last went but I met several local expats who said it is pretty easy. Get a tourist visa stay of 30 days and visit an agent who will "fix things much cheaper than in Thailand" was what I was told.
I have looked for long stay information online before but there doesn't seem to be much. I expect the OP had the same problem only more recently, so in Covid times I doubt anything will be up to date.
With the new Thai regulations I might be forced into leaving Thailand anyway next year so I will follow this thread with interest.

As others have pointed out nothing is ever what it seems or straightforward in Thailand. My point here is what does "short-time" mean in Thai? An hour usually, but this is really open to interpretation by whoever you are dealing with at the time.
Best wishes, G

I beg to differ
I am always cautious when I write something from memory.
After reading your answer I have asked and the reply is:
« Please be advised that if you relocate to another province or another part of your province for a short-time period, you are not required to register a TM30 again. The new immigration rules have been applied to all areas in Thailand on 30 June 2020.In case you have a valid reciept, the reciept still can be used to do all kinds of visa activities until you will be leaving Thailand. »I guess you were ill informedHave a great dayGreat news! I had never heard about this new rule. Trouble is I would bet my overspending Thai wife on the fact very few Immigration Officers have heard about it either.

Did anyone tell Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn about the TM30, or is this another case of speaking without thinking first?
This story was in The Nation on August 5 and posted in Thailand News on the 6 by Webfact:

When I took my motorbike test here in 1983 on a 400 there were disqualifying diseases, the only one I remember for sure was Elephantiasis. I think epilepsy was another but they should give this plenty of thought before deciding instead of the usual foot in mouth afterwards.

The Nation has to be about the silliest excuse for a news outlet in Thailand's history of many
25 - 30+ years ago it was respected, but now I agree with you.

Do all these offers include doing your TM30 every day?

Everyone knows about the bribery and corruption, but now we have blackmail and probably the murder of a witness. As this plays out between the Hi-Sos, the police and the politicians we can all sit and watch in Amazement...

Year after year, police chief after police chief, new PM after new PM this continues. We all know what needs to be done and we all know why it never is.
Mai pen rai and RIP.

Yuthasak Supasorn must be both a genius and a clairvoyant, amazing!

To my knowledge over the last 30+ years this is normal practice in Thailand. The less customers they have the more things cost.

Sheer stupidity trying to cover corruption and incompetence!
That is so close to the truth. Thais are prolific liars but they are hopeless at it as they can't tell the same story twice.

Boss was tested for alcohol ten hours after the incident
So how much did he drink in 10 hours if he was still over the limit, but only just (20%)?

Excellent. Note the vertical tilt of the 'shooters' mirror will tilt upwards for his eyes to see the road behind. That means a reflection from the car headlight behind him will also tilt up towards the camera. Too bright for a handgun. I also zoomed the picture of the two bikes where clearly 2 headlights reflect off the road forward and to the right at an angle straight to the camera.
So, it's clear!
The first police assailant in the car used his headlight to cause a bright reflection covering the real muzzle flash of the second police assailant on the left bike, who shot precisely at the time a Red Bull Company assailant tried to topple the target's bike from the rear. Startled by the forward bike's sudden jerk, he too went down where he lay still using his phone to quickly transfer the money from his bank because the police got the target first. The rest of the evidence was edited out by the Army who control the cameras.
Its a lot clearer without the "Watch Later" on Youtube.
I don't think the shot came from the other side, it looks to me it was close range from a second motorbike on the same side and the CCTV has been tampered with: time stamp missing and brightness flares as second bike vanishes.
-
On a big screen between 9 and 13 seconds you can see a second headlight very close to the left hand headlight that becomes the motorbike that crashes. At 16 seconds the background lighting mysteriously brightens and the second headlight disappears, What must be a dead or unconscious body falls off at 17 seconds and remains in the nearside lane as the bike veers into the central barrier. The time is not recorded on the clip, I am using the Youtube timer.
I wonder if the autopsy showed a bullet wound to the left temple?

Call it what you want and it is legal, but it is racism.
If this guy had been black there would be world wide protests.
Until double pricing stops at government facilities like National Parks Thailand can be said to have a systemic racist society.

Wishful thinking, I hope this idiot remains in the doldrums where he belongs. The Immigration didn't know what new laws they would get from day to day. He might have made some improvements to office efficiency but he did nothing for tourists or long stayers unless you had pots of money.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.

So, who had the authority to drop the charges, who made the decision and why does nobody seem to know about it?
Was it Big Joke again?

There is only one alternative to "no double standards" and that is bribery and corruption.
Apparently the RTP motto is: Another day another dollar.

My ATM card is Chip & Pin but 4 digit and only three or maybe four years old and any change should should take place with the expiry date. The Branch in Bangkok should have changed it in May otherwise.
Yes I know that which is why I pointed out the Isan branch was a Bangkok Bank. What you say doesn't help as once my passbook is full I will have to go back to Bangkok to get a new one (and an ATM card). We had intended to stay here until "normality" returns to the world.
