Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get a work permit in Thailand??? I am a degree qualified mobile Automation Engineer working in China and Asia. I looked into supplementing my income during the quiet times by teaching or working as an engineer. If you do not work at a static site or have your own company (another pain in the ass to setup - but don't get me started on that one - Off topic) then it is almost impossible, unless you go through the brown envelope route (5000 per month). Typically the bureaucracy in Thailand is designed to supplement the brown envelope brigade. I know this because I have just setup a business for my wife. It's made as difficult as possible so that when you get a random phone offering the easy service for a fee you gladly accept. Luckily my wife and I were extremely stubborn and denied them of this pleasure. As the goal posts kept changing after every one of the 8 or 9 visits to the ampur office.

I get offered emergency breakdown work regularly in Thailand but have to turn it down because I can't get a work permit fast enough, and can't risk the immigration money collection system.

I am married to a Thai national and have a multi entry married visa.

    Well said........

Economy is bleeding.. everything  falling apart  but inmigration have nothing else to do.... maybe declare war to neighbor country to make people forget problem at home.. shame on ....

I've been praying they make that fatal mistake of winding up Cambodia again, i'd love to see T72s rolling down Sukhumvit amidst clouds of Thai uniforms and tons of cereal packet medals whistling through the air as the brave lads leg it to the UN or the yanks begging for help from the decadent farangs........

For some reason, I don’t like seeing the Beg packers sitting on the streets selling.

But on the other hand I don’t mind backpackers.

Now days lot of wealthy people like to use backpacks and stay in nice family B&Bs. They also like meeting up with other backpacker who share their experiences and advise where to go next. I’ve met lots of those over the past 30 years. The last one was a Canadian Dr, backpacking,  we went river rafting together and I ask him who took over his Drs rooms while away he said his Sister a Dr as well, and on his return home she would be coming to Thailand and following in his footsteps. The rise in Travels to Thailand was built on backpackers and I don’t think they should be ignored or discourage come.

Yeah you're right, the problem is that Thais have forgotten how poor they were a few years ago and it was the backpackers that blazed the trail for tourism........ Pockets full, you go home now..........

  4. I  can't say i'm surprised with this latest petty garbage coming from the BIB, but it's reminding me of what somebody said to me thirty years ago in a bar in Sukhumvit. This old bloke who was hanging onto the bar leaned towards me and asked if he could give me some advice ?  Fire away old fellah was my reply expecting some drunken drivvle, but oh no, what he came out with was pure gold and it's banging on all our doors right now. He said, " Don't have anything in this country that you can't pick up and run with,  because that day will come "........

Sit down and watch the show, and have your bags ready......

  5. What a shame for Thailand and it's people being governed by a bunch of tin pot action men, the same lot i saw last time running down Suk taking their uniforms off before the mob turned up. Indeed the surrounding countrys must be rubbing their hands watching the small minded mentality that goes berserk over a few hippies but hides when real action turns up......... Very sad, it used to be the land of smiles and fun, now it's just becoming a joke, and not a funny one....... When the cat's away the mice will play...........

    Defamation?

Having the wrong Thai visa for their personal circumstances isn't defamation in any shape or form. Not even close.

Yes but being accused of having insufficient funds and seeking work in Thailand when the accused has evidence to the contrary is....... Charged without evidence and denied travel totally on false charges. Defamation..... Sadly we're dealing with a third world legal system so other methods will be introduced..... As a lawyer colleague of mine explained to me a long time ago, " Thai law is who you know and how much money you've got ".......

I'll just put you on ignore as your English comprehension skills appear too poor for any reasonable levels of discussion.

    Have a nice day.

Hey Mr Brit man, if you can't stand an answer to your post i suggest you refrain from sticking your two penneth worth in....... Comprehension skills ? The guy in question was informed by immigration the he " Travels too much"....... Was that random ?

    It's a form of denial.

"If I don't do anything wrong they'll let me in, therefore you must have done something wrong."

They can't accept immigration are totally random in their refusals, and they are as likely to be rejected as anyone else.

Did you just get off the boat ? Thailand's just about to commit murder to save face..... I lived nearly thirty years in Thailand and i've witnessed numerous counts of innocent people fitted up by the authorities........ Sadly there's lots of people on TV with very little experience of Thailand passing their half baked western opinions that do not cut it outside of Milton Keynes.....

As I said at the beginning the story was fabricated and had huge holes. Not even a good BSer in my opinion. The engineers I've known have a good eye for details and are never so sloppy.

Mr Gallaher i suggest you go to the heads and empty yourself you seem to be full of it..... As i've previously stated the account is 100% correct, if it wasn't it wouldn't be currently being pursued legally. What i find so incredibly unbelievable is why do you think people should furnish precise details to you ? afterall, what and who are you ? I'm betting that you're the guy that's always sat in the way at the bar reading the paper generally being a pain in the rear end. As for Engineers, the guy in question whom i've known for years as stated in the article has worked on the largest projects in the country as an Engineer....... I wonder if you'll be so kind as to furnish TV with your profession and qualification, or would that be embarassing ?

i actually find the whole story to be an absurdity

it was posted directly after a news article in which a young woman was detained in bkk for having a few missing pages in her passport

the op's description of the detaining cell matching that of the news article

the op is not a child

why would he sign a confession
as for the ba guy well he sounds delightful

why would one buy a flight

if one had worked on several prestigious thailand projects one would assume some contacts

its simply not up to par

then it becomes even more ludicrous at PB Singapore being the obvious port of call for any respectably employed individual in Malaysia.

& now we have a senior member popping up with a bank book and claiming defamation
    it soars way above trolling
its up to par more with a Malaysian movie production rather than a thai one

and of course we have all visited the thai embassy in BKK
only last week i happened to pop in dutch embassy in Amsterdam just to get a bit of medication you understand

and thats what this post requires.............. medicated

Absurdity....... was that the word of the day ?  What would the guy do if he say works in North Malaysia, surely the Thai border would be easier ?  I know that his first border crossing was at Johor Baru so he thought he'd vary his travels, out of luck it would appear..... Ask anyone who's been refused entry into Thailand you always have to pay for your flight out, even when you're dead..... Hey, by the way i think i can hear your mother calling you to come back in......

Yes. The warning is if you qualify for a Non-O visa based on retirement in Thailand and you are living in Thailand, stop being a lazy ass and stop using SETV and METV that the Thai police orders clearly say you don't qualify for.

So let's consider the accusation of having insufficient funds to enter the Kingdom in the light of the recent post of the accuseds bank book ......I also have his work contract from Hong Kong...... All yours Sherlock.....

    For the OP:

    1. Great post - rational, informative.

    2. Imm Officers you dealt with: unfortunately indicative of a broader malaise. Too late now but did you manage to get their names? I find that asking/looking for their names can help. These people frequently suffer from inferiority complexes - hence the overreaction.

    3. Strongly suggest that you give this story to larger media outlets than Thai Visa - especially from your home country, if only as a warning of just how badly things can go wrong...

It was posted precisely for that reason. It's true, it's nasty, and it could happen to anybody. It's not meant to be tried and judged on TV...........Common sense at last......

Who's bank book is this and if not yours why are you posting it and not the OP?

Anyway it proves nothing as there is no name on it.

It gets more and more fishy.

Der, it's a current case not to be tried and judged on TV but in a court of law.  No names, hence the poster is not the individual concerned. It's just been posted here as a tester.......it's working....

If you look at the book you'll see the 7th was the incarceration date and the 11th was the release.......it's kosher........

I agree, if this story was fully genuine and he had done no wrong, he shouldn't be concerned but it does seem that there are some holes in the story.

It should be criminal for them to refuse you entry on not having sufficient funds when you have 20k in your wallet and a Thai bank book with you. Why don't they have another reason for refusal such as "person attempted to enter on incorrect visa type", rather than using the same old insufficient funds as a catch all to deny anyone?

Check the 7th of June, the date of the incident.......

Wrong again, he's not American he's British, and no he didn't write the article he just posted it........
