  1. I have a Nissan NV with manual gear and (as I have written before) I love it. Funny to drive, low maintenance cost and few (cheap) repairs.

I was wondering about the ones with automatic gear. Does it work fine and has there been any repairs?.

All the NV's must have done 200,000-300,000 km. by now!?. Could be interesting to know, if the automatic gearbox is still OK.

For the second cycle in a row, I have not been able to get past the first info screen.

    I was using IE.

It worked for me some time ago; maybe last year? But now clearly it's a waste of time.

The system is no longer working. Don't even bother wasting your time with it.

I just tried it (IE10) and it works fine.

(Remember to allow all the "illegal certificates)

it is also annoying to see they don't offer top models on manual gears.

Don't feel bad about that, because you pay a fortune for top models (with original accessories).

You can get all the "after market" accessories you like; in better quality and for half the price.

Case in point: Toyota Yaris models range from 460,000 Baht to 600,000 Baht (Eco, J, E and G). It's the same chassis, engine and CVT gearbox. I bought the J model for my daughter, because she could not live without electric windows!. For the extra 40,000 Baht from the Eco and J model, we got a crappy stereo and wheel caps.

When I see a new car or pickup with full options; I think it's because they got it all on the car loan, and don't have any cash to do it after?.

thanks for all the replys people, this may not sound good.

We have since been to the police station and the aussie man is trying to charge both of us with theft and he has repeatedly said to the police i work here i work here but my wife said no he does not. The police dismissed his claims immediately so it looks like the illegal working thing does not seem to be going anywhere. But just on that no one pays me anything at all, sometimes i just help her cleaning is that still considered working illegally?. anyway, the safes in this guesthouse are key only, and my wife holds the keys so that isnt a good sign. im 100% sure she did not take his money. the police came and looked at the cameras but couldnt find anything, they also blamed a 3 hour blackout on electricity problems. We are now waiting for someone from the embassy to come to the police station. i will post further when i know what is going on

    thanks

Thank you for the update report.

I was Hotel Manager for 2 years in Phuket and have seen a lot; but not all!.

How did the embassy get into the picture?.

Did the police come to the Hotel before you were called to the police station?

  5. If you know, you will have to pay the 1,600 Baht, why not check into a Hotel and spend the night out. 500 Baht for Hotel and 1,100 Baht for dinner. You can even bring your wife!?.

Then go to Immigration 1-2 days later and do the TM30 for your normal address.

It's probably best to keep the receipt from the Hotel, because you don't know, if they do the TM30 reporting.

May i carry my own cans of beer onto the train?  Thus avoiding the enforced 12 hour dry spell.

I think you can do that; but unless you have a private 1. class cabin, it would be offensive.

Personally; I would premix 2-3 (1/2 lt.) Cokes with Bacardi.

Thx to codyB for the hotels.com reference. I checked and found great info for my test of Bangkok hotel. Also like their map reference (superior to the new version of Agoda) and their billing detail.

I really like to know the difference between the old and new Agoda version. I've asked the OP and no answer, so now, when you state the same, I ask you!?.

  8. 3 hours ago, phuketrichard said:

not true, for new hosts Booking.com charges 15% , Agoda 20% ( if old host it was 15%) travel now 15%

THAN if the link came form an affiliate of (booking, agoda)they pay out 6% to the affiliate

on the other hand airbnb ONLY charges the host 3%

for 99% of the hotels online  they can NOT offer a lower price than what it sold to the hotel suppliers ( agoda) as they have a contract stating they wont. SOMETIMES u can get a lower rate not not often.

That is absolutely correct (about Agoda).

I like to know what specifically the OP don't like about the "new" Agoda design?.

I use Agoda regularly and I don't feel there is any difference in functionality.

PS! I normally travel around Thailand; and in the old days, the (Thai) wife had to go alone into the Hotel's and ask for the price. If they saw a Falang, the price would be min. 50% higher!

I think the day train is quite tedious and you basically lose a day. Still interesting, but I think there are advantages to the later Special Express departure (19:40) from Bangkok especially:

    * By the time it gets to the really nice scenery in the North, morning daylight will have arrived meaning you can actually see it.

    * Night trains don't lose you time as you'd probably spend most of that time in a hotel bed anyway.  With the train you save a night in a hotel and gain an experience without losing time for sightseeing activities.

That said it would be worth looking into if the new carriages are on both departures (#1 and #13).  Chances are they'll only be new carriages on the #1 'Nakhorn Ping" Special Express initially so in that case I might lean to that departure after all.

Another thing you could do that will give you the experience and scenery is do a day trip by train from Chiang Mai to Lampang.  (Cm TO Lampang is better because the departure time will be accurate; Lampang to Chiang Mai is just as scenic but it's anyone's guess when that train actually makes it to Lampang.

So for a day trip it's best to take the train to Lampang and then find another way back. You can combine it for example with the Elephant Hospital in between Lampang and Chiang Mai, and there is another elephant sanctuary nearby as well.  That's best arranged with your own transportation though, or book a car + driver from Chiang Mai to meet you in Lampang at the train station. Then you can do a couple temples around Lampang ( those horse drawn carriages may be an old-style way of doing the city temples), then take your driver out to the large temple outside of town and then on to the Elephant hospital and then back to Chiang Mai.

That would make a nice day trip and not too expensive, just the car & driver which will be something like 2500-3000 for the car/van + driver for the day, including fuel.

(Dam I'm getting good at tour stuff. :) )

That's a very good idea; and I can just take my car, and get them in Lampang. Win, win!.

Just curious, why would they want to take the train? That train journey is torture, forget what the time table says it takes 14-16 hour and they get you out of your bunk at 6am like jailers getting you up for the day.

Flights from don muang airport to Chiang Mai can be got for less than 1000 baht now.

They were just going to take the train trip for fun; and I told them, only to do it, if it's the new trains.

They are on holiday and have all the time in the world. Anyway; it looks like the new trains are not starting this month, so no train trip.

Does Payap in Chiang Mai have a hotel /hospitality program (major) offered/taught in English language.?

I was told they did not and want to verify that this is so.

    They have:

    http://ic.payap.ac.th/international-undergraduate/hospitality-industry-management/

and Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai also have:

    http://www.mfu.ac.th/school/management/2015/programmes/bachelor/hospitality

The reason I mention Mae Fah Luang is because I'm planning to send my daughter there instead of Payap. I think it's better!?.

    But she will studying MBA.

PS!. Ignore pgrahmm's replies to this post; he might have been a little bit drunk!?
