No pop up bars, normal bars. Not going to tell though otherwise they will be swamped with tourist in no time and after that the will be shutdown too.

So if they are so private it proves my point. The real ,open, night life has been closed down. It's not just tourists who used the pip up bars but THAI people,  regulars visitors and people who lived in Thailand.  Affordable good fun andbreal! I can't bear snobs who dislike tourist and think they are better than other people. Like I said BKk is a bore these days..So there's a few private bars only you know about...which you can't reveal. Pathetic time wasting. I had hoped you had some credible advice to offer. You don't

Sukhumvit is just a tiny part of BKK.

They are doing the same social cleansing in KSR and many other places. Dreadful. But at least you allow the fact of ruination of Lower Suk. Please tell me where there are pop up bars and restaurants open til 4 am as there used to be on Lower Suk. I really want to know.

The last of the soldiers left about a year ago , havent seen a soldier since .

In that regard, Pattaya is in exactly the same position as CM , both under the same Government .

I have no idea what the will of the people is , as its not a topic that is widely disused anywhere and neither do you know what the will of the people is , so, stop pretending you do (speaking to a few of your friends doesnt give a comprehensive opinion)

I refer to prostitutes as prostitutes, because that is what they are .

Why dont you refer to prostitutes as prostitutes ?

Does the term bargirls make you think to yourself that they are not prostitutes ?

The term prostitute tends to be deliberately degrogatory enabling the user to feel morally superior.  Sex worker seems more polite. The use of the term prostitute is a form of woman hate dictated by a patriarchal controlling view. Men who use such crude terms are threatened by all independent women not just sex workers.  They are usually morally dubious with something to hide. You seem to have lived in Thailand and learned nothing of value but reinforcement of your prejudices. . We all sell our bodies.  I don't buy into your spite.  I'm glad the army have left. CM. Although the army has moved into Pattaya it still has a different municipal structure to other cities and more independence. Let's hope it stays that way and that CM returns to it's erstwhile incarnation instead the tired sterile dump it has become.  After free elections...if you believe in.such things. There is one thing I'd like to ask you: Is your name Sanemax related to women's hygiene products? Or hadn't you noticed.

What "independence" does Pattaya have , that the rest of the Country doesnt have ?

The local authorities in CM have actively been trying to dissuade the  drinkers and whoremongers from visiting CM , its only the people who profit from them (bar owners, prostitutes, tuk-tuk drivers) who oppose the changes , the 95% of the rest of the population are in favour of the changes

The municipal structure of Pattaya, historically, had been more independent with less central government control and more autonomy with regards to a wide range of laws. The night life business supports a whole host of other related businesses, Food and Beverage,  Hospitality,  Hotels   restaurants,  bars,  guest houses, laundrys, transportation including taxis, shops, clothing outlets  building construction etc. These all generate wealth at many diffent levels. That is why Pattaya is so  successful and wealthy.  There has been no real municipal drive by an elected local government against anybody in CM. That's just your fantasy. It's a garrison town occupied by men with guns and uniforms against the will of the people. May I ask: do you get a sense of self validification by referring to the girls as prostitutes? Feel it puts you on the moral high ground?  Makes you feel superior?  Stops the pain, doubt and regret?  Good luck.

Its quite odd then, that every other local Government chooses to not be like Pattaya

They do not choose. They are not allowed to have the degree of independence that Pattaya has. You live in a fantasy land of your own projected values.

Nonsense, you can still drink very late, still is a lot of street life and police presence is only in a couple of places. Never had to take a piss test or had a shakedown. I do live in BKK.

Where can you drink late? The pop up bars and restaurants from Soi 3 to 21 have swept away.  They used to set up early evening and rock till 3 or 4am. That has gone. The police presence is Plain clothed as well as uniform.  So you have never had to do a piss test. Big deal. Others have and risk of false positives are high. Lower Suk is a depressing shell of what it used to which was a fabulous cornucopia of the wierd and the wonderful. It was so much fun. Now it's like an empty night club...no use to anyone. It has all.the attraction of a broken, used condom.

How often were you part of a piss test or a shake down? I live in Bangkok since more than 20 years (in lower Sukhumvit) and the police never ever checked me not even asking for a passport. The traffic police stopped me often enough on my bike but that's 99% of the time about money and 100B solves the problem.

I know these drug test exists. But it happens so seldom that it won't affect most of us - ever.

I'm happy you are still having fun in Bangkok. Its just not freewheeling enough for me anymore. And I really hate the expulsion of the traders, hawkers, pop up bars and pop up restaurants.  Lower Suk is just so depressing.  Where is late night Bangkok? Why do restaurants close so early? Why are the go go girls fully dressed? Why is lower Suk filled with Arab families and African pimps ? The destruction of the street life was the last straw for me. Now when I'm passing through Bangkok I don't bother to stay overnight. In the old days I spent most of my holidays there.   Artistic communities and street markets have been destroyed. It's awful now.

I am not going to read nine pages and maybe that was mentioned already:

Pay the bill and after you pay go to the tourist police. They will sort it out for you and you will get the money back -  without hassle.

That is standard advise and it works.

And about this drinks: At least in Soi Cowboy standard drinks are 25ml of the real staff. One problem is that it seems to be difficult to impossible to buy the 25ml optics for the bottles in Thailand. But since bar owners can buy them online this shouldn't be a problem anymore.

As the tourist police have changed their role there is not much point going to them anymore as a poster on another thread pointed out. He ended up in jail. Avoid all police if possible to avoid shake downs.

Everything changes but Bangkok has loads of different nationalities and is way bigger than Pattaya.

It has changed for the worse. Early closing, elimination of street life and enterprise. It's vacuous and sterile with a heavy police presence. Random piss tests and shake downs are not the sign of a cosmopolitan city and the freedom of movement that goes with it. That's just third world nonsense mainly imposed by an unelected authority.  I used to live in Bangkok but had to leave as the regime gutted it.

i ordered a beer at the corner bar LK Metro when it came the bill said 130 i was a bit urgh but she said you get another, i was only waiting for a chow mein so she nicely gave the second beer with the top on. i love thailand

Two for one. As well as Chow Me in Charlie's the stand next door sells fish and chips and potato scallops. Over the opposites is Touch a pretty good GO Go bar. Nearby is the cheapest Thai restaurant in Pattaya and one of the best steak houses in Thailand. Regarding rip offs. They are rare and only happen to naive, foolish people for whom the experience is a life lesson or they are false positives from people who have a victim complex. Actual scams are rare. You are more likely to find open honesty in Thailand. That is my experience. Some visitors crying ripp off take an anti malaria drug which makes them paranoid, some are village idiots with no city experience and not experienced travellers, some just thoughtless and immature  and just a tiny percentage are really conned. The OP in this thread was not one because he ended up only paying a modest amount. Compared to North Africa, India, Egypt, and a whole host of other countries Thailand is a smooth, easy going, dream.

LK Metro is in Pattaya. You say you love Thailand but Pattaya is not Thailand. More overweight old fat western gits you could ever poke a stick at, is not Thailand.

Pattaya is quintessential Thailand. It's not rural Thailand. But it is the only truly international  cosmopolitan city in Thailand.  The foreign visitor demographics changes and the elderly retired crowd are outnumbered by Chinese and Indian visitors. Next- London isn't England, Paris isn't France.

You came to the wrong place for commiseration dude! Lots of deniers, holier than thous, teetotalers, early birds and selective memories here. Yes...Thailand can be a Tourist Trap ripoff nowadays and has been for the past decade. Been here 25 years, so have a decent reference time frame. Have to be very careful and watch and inquire about everything. Many years ago I dubbed LOS (formerly Land Of Smiles)...Land Of Scams & Snarls.

All that said, it certainly does not happen everywhere...nor all the time. When out of your comfort zones and familiar watering holes...ASK UP FRONT. Even that won't always save you from being gouged and/or encountering a very unpleasant situation. (Think some upstairs bars in Pat Pong).

Anyhoo...y'all got ripped. Chalk it up  to experience and move on. Happens to all of us...or most of us...or at least some of us. Remember the old adage...'fool me once...'

    Cheers?

If he wasn't aware of CM Karoke bar scams he won't be aware of the scams, years ago in Patpong upstairs bars.

It wasnt just me though , it was the whole drinking population out there causing mayhem on the streets.

Anyway cannot talk now, my boy needs attention , asking then names of things in English

You have a rich fantasy life or false memory syndrome. The idea of the whole drinking population causing mayhem in CM is silly and patently an exaggeration.  I wonder if you over inflate your importance in the history of CM night life?

  15. 21 minutes ago, sanemax said:

It really was , I was one of them out there as well .

After a few years of drinking all night and rowdy behavior , I got bored of it and welcomed the changes .

I finally got the teenage mentality out my system and grew up

Yes you sound very mature. Just because you were an anti social  trouble maker does not mean a whole town should change. You seek to deny to others that which you enjoyed.  Many of us drink and party without the immature behaviour you practised. It's your problem not ours.

Absolutely not. The fact that many a poor guy has wasted heaps of money on prostituts and booze, actually much more than needed if ya know what I mean isnt not exactly rocket science. I know that very well myself from experience so absolutely now predudices involved here, just pure knowledge. Ask any sailor will ya...

Bult luckily I have learned ? Hopefully TS has too...?

Not really your business what other people do with their money is it? Whatever your experiences have been? "Many a poor guy has wasted heaps of money". Not wasted if he was having a good time.  Why deny to others or criticise a lifestyle choice you, on your own admittance, once embraced? Sounds a bit hypocritical to me. Just saying.

Good to know about which bars or karaoke joints, have no qualms bitch slapping, or known to give a tourists a sucker punch bill.

If there was a thread, about Thai pubs/karaoke bar ratings/warnings, I'd be searching through it, before weekend roadtrips.

    Eg:

    The Thai Pub Thread

Xcity PubA: Good pub, live music XXbaht for a pint, 3K bfines, no grief, mostly farang, had a great time

Xcity PubB: Good pub, karaoke, XXXbaht for pint, no bar fining, mostly Thai, watch your bills, over charged but sorted it out, great place.

Xcity PubC: Dirty pub, no music, XXbaht for pint, 1.5K bfines, young Thai crowd, a lot of trouble,  credit/ATM card not recommended, many have been scammed.  Good fun but keep your shiet together and use cash

Which city.  What are the names of the places? What time do they close?

The reality is that there used to be hoards of drunken Westerners roaming the streets between 2-6 AM , drinking, shouting , singing , arguing and fighting and these people disturbed everyone else who were trying to sleep .

This is the time when many accidents occurred , along with the injuries from fights and the constant tuk-tuk noise and the police and ambulance sirens throughout the night

No. Your dystopian view is probably a mirror of your own disapproving, anti social nature. CM used to be good fun but it was never as rowdy as you describe. Currently it's, a joyless polluted city known for its elderly farang homosexual boy/gay scene, vegetarian top knotters in pyjama trouser, an authoritarian Immigration office and its depressed population. Bring Back the old days. Make Chiang Mai great again!
