You were probably better off posting this in the Chiang mai forum

By posting it in this forum you only get guys such as Johnny the disability pensioner from Sydney posting negative replies because he has nothing to do in his council flat

    Postman Pat from Perth!

Bill padding is the norm in Jomtien and Pattaya. Pay as you go they even try charging for 2. Ask prices first. No wonder the bars are empty.

It certainly is not the norm in Pattaya or Jomtien. It's happened to me once  in 15 years - in WS and the service girl got fired. The main problem is Farang not paying up or underestimating how much booze they have ordered. You don't need to pay as you go along. Just let the staff see you check you bill when it arrives

Haha, they must have seen you coming!

Half drunk at 2 in the morning asking taxi drivers for an illegal boozing den with prostitutes! You forgot to ask the prices so I'm afraid it's really your fault, this happens in Tokyo, London, New York, Rome, Prague etc.......

It doesn't make Chiang Mai a dump because you got duped.

It is a dump but not because a loser got suckered there.?

Can you you try writing that in English, and since when was it illegal to drink after 2am? I’m guessing you’re related to the rip off filth in Chang Mai if you think a gill of 18’000 Baht is “a bit high”, I can just imaging you picking you’re nose and having a feast while you wrote that.

Bars close 11pm CM. Anyway the CM karaoke bars are a well known ripp off. It's common knowledge.

In my bacchanalian days, it wasn't the locals that made Pattaya wild and crazy, it was the 'tourists'. The locals just came along for the ride, all wide-eyed with amazement.

Then it became politically incorrect to even think about that sort of stuff.

Finally, the 'tourist' demographic changed and all hope was lost.

You must tell that to the girls and punters at the Windmill and other establishments.

Jingthing and others who enjoy food from new Chinese/Asian places in town will be happy the next years but western places are going to close pretty soon if the Chinese invasion continues. And that worries me. Still some decent German, French and Italian places around but also several are closing their doors.

Many Chinese visitors like to try western  Indian and Thai food.

  7. Portugal is served by two oceans the Atlantic and the med. Portugal has three distinct climactic zones. It is a very hot country in the summer. The north and even Lisbon is chilly in the winter. The far north has snow and skiing. There is plenty of very cheap rural accommodation and living  in places like the Duro valley etc. City accomodation is naturally more expensive. Although the Algarve coast is expensive for accomodation a few miles inland is cheap. Beer is cheaper tham Thailand. Nightlife is snobby and aimed at young people and can be expensive.  Food is plainish but there is also a lot of seafood. Spanish food is better. There are some charming medieval towns and quaint villages.  It is not as cheap as Thailand, there is no girly scene, it is not as much fun. Spain is more fun with many more festivals and a wilder party atmosphere. Both countries have enlightened drug laws so drug related crime has been reduced but street crime is an issue in Spanish cities. Neither are a substitute for Thailand in terms of P4P, cost of living and cultural extravagance.

Terminal 21 may be just the thing to raise Pattays image , could also be a monumental flop.

I'm not sure how a shopping mall could improve any city. A museum,  or Art gallery or theatre, or opera house I could understand. And that which seeks to attract coach loads of uneducated tourists from main land China can't really elevate a place rather drag it down.

    MAJOR NEW FOOD FIND! :partytime2:

    FOOD STREET

    At the A-1 Hotel

Soi 3 (not far from Beach road)

    North Pattaya

Higher end dim sum (and so much more for surprisingly friendly prices). This is a higher end food food court concept with popular prices. You pay for a card and add a 40 baht card deposit and then you are helped by the staff at the stations. Don't fight it, that's their job. For example, if you want to put 300 on your card, pay 340. You get a refund plus the deposit like any food court system. You order at the various stations and the food is brought to your table. It's a more elegant food court experience.

It's the kind of place that when you first see it looks like it's going to be a tourist trap rip off. But it's not. For example, Drinking water -- 15 baht.

Aside from the DIM SUM (in my view the big, big news part of it) there are various other stations including Chinese BBQ, Pizza/Pasta, Chinese herbal soups, Japanese in different styles, Thai desserts, and of course drinks.

I tried five different types of dim sum. Good stuff! I think easily the best you're going to get in Pattaya at their price point.  The highlight was the green one with chives. BTW, and this is a big deal -- the dim sum is cooked to order fresh for you. That makes a huge difference with the fried items which can be totally disgusting if they sit around.

I did ask but probably would have come anyway -- got dipping sauces including soy sauce, vinegar, and honey. They even brought a hot spicy paste sauce as well. (If they don't and you want it, ask, they're eager to please!)

PP was a bit of a shock for me having spent most of my time in BKK and Pattaya - walking out of Sharkey's Bar at midnight to find myself on a pitch black street didnt thrill me one bit but fortunately my hotel was only a few doors down on St 130. The aptly named City Centre Hotel might not have the best views in the world, but it was my sanctuary for roughly 36 hours of hell when I contracted food poisoning the morning after that first visit to Sharkey's. That's the one thing I'm hoping has improved since 2010 - hygiene standards - but looking at a few blog entries I'm inclined to wonder if that is the case. I did have another nasty night driving the porcelain bowl here in Pattaya a few months back but nothing to compare to the incredible eruptions of black bile that literally had me wondering which end to point at the bowl. I wouldnt have made the airport in a cab without soiling myself, much less got on a plane to BKK - many will laugh, but there were periods in that hotel room when I wondered if I would succumb to whatever nasty bacteria were having a party in my intestines, and that's not a good feeling in a country with such a poor reputation for medical care. Little wonder Sheryl is a walking encyclopaedia or medical knowledge !

(Apologies to those who might have just eaten :D)

Been there.Such dysentery can cause overwhelming mental fatigue and fear

I can't be sure, but if you re-read that post you replied to, this time with your sarcasm detector switched on, you might get a different result.

I assume honesty and sincerity.  Sarcasm is best left to verbal communications. In text the nuances are lost and as such rendered as a straight forward statements without any sub text or hidden meaning. Perhaps next time the writer could write in brackets the word 'sarcasm ' to indicate his communicative intentions.

You may want to try Huang Chao in the Royal Cliff Hotel in Pratumnak Hill.  It won't be cheap but real Peking Duck never is cheap.

    peking duck.jpg

Yeah thats the only place i know. When in london the take away  place charge about six quid for a small portion, pancakes, sauce and greens but I've never had it in pats so don't know the price. I suspect the Royal Cliff in Pattaya only does large portions more suitable for sharing than eating alone.
