Maybe I can get some answers to this.

On average, in a bar, what is the difference in price between a pint of beer and a pint of orange juice?

IMO The orange juice should be about half of the beer.

what kind of bar? Go Go? Karaoke? Bar Beer? Pub? Night Club?

Anybody who lets a tuk-tuk driver take him to a karaoke bar in Thailand at 2:00am and then whines because he got ripped off is either a newbie or dense. .

Indeed. And then writes about as if it's something we are not aware of or is the OP asking for sympathy?

I am not talking about the entire bar industry in Thailand, I am talking about the propensity for foreigners to get scammed in karaoke bars in CM, which is the topic of the thread after all. You can generalize and deflect by attacking all you like, you, are, simply, wrong.

Actually you were referencing the night life industry in general by your condemnation of sex workers and drinkers. Read what you wrote.

And Pattaya is beautiful , clean sea , walks along the beach at night , nice family orientated bars .

High class people from all over the World visit Pattaya to sample such delights

Thank goodness is not like you describe.  Why do you think people want to live in a tedious, anodyne family friendly resort going for walks by the sea? Millions don't. Not everybody shares your tame views .

I think they used to call these places ‘clip joints’ - not sure if that term is used so much these days .

Being charged thousands for cheap Champagne etc - if you did not pay- baseball bats!

So if you choose to spend your time drinking and exploiting the poor vulnerable local population in the underbelly of bars and sex workers - be prepared to be ripped off - good-  a bit of payback .

Anybody who thinks Thai bar girls are vunerable is deluded. Nor are they in the habit of ripping people off. Its rare.

It appears that you condoning people being drugged and scammed in Karaokes and charging it off as a risk of going to a lady bar, then deflect the statement as a moral judgement based on some prior prejudice.   This simply is not the chase with CM Karaokes as this scam has played out for years and is well documented. Stating a fact is hardly a moral judgement.

99% of people who consort with sex workers while drinking do NOT get drugged and ripped off. You are wrong. It is not a fact. It is your delusion and sanctimony. A silly false generalisation.

From all of the stories I have heard, no fareng should EVER go to any Karaoke bar in Thailand, unless they are accompanied by a Thai, who is a trusted friend. Never. Ever. These stories are rampant. These are clip joints. Often, when you refuse to pay the stated amount it can get very ugly. Not worth it. Even when the cops get involved, you still get clipped. Do not patronize these filthy scum joints. Unless you know the place, and/or know the owner, best to avoid. Going to a random joint like this, at 2am, on the advice of a taxi driver? A recipe for disaster, and naivety at it's zenith.

There is nothing wrong with Chiang Mai. It is a great town. But never pick random spots like that.

CM is a dump ...end of.

'Sex workers and booze go hand in hand' I take your word on it as you appear to be extreemly well versed in this highly regarded occupation.

So what? You should try it yourself and speak with more authority on the subject. There are many ocupations worse than sex work. Being a smug moralist is one such occupation.

Well known scam in Chiang Mai. Should have done your homework mate. Not that I support this karaokescumbagclubs, they should have been burned down to the ground each and everyone of them.

But then again - indulging with prostitutes and alcohol can be a mean mix.

Sex workers and booze usually go hand in hand. You are giving a moral judgement reflecting your own prejudices not an accurate assessment.

Another ignorant visitor with a story of many flaws which does not make sense. The national closing time is 12 midnight, but many places extend that to 2, 3 or 4 am. Just Chiang Mai enforces that with quite some rigor, closing bars if they serve a drink after midnight and get caught. Suggest you give CM a miss, us locals will be quite happy with that.

A local? You are not Thai and do not speak for Thai people in CM. The rules are enforced by an unelected military force and police. The Thais in CM are miserable

    My rule

If a tip is not expected i sometimes give one. If it is expected i never give one

How do you know what is expected ? Can you read minds? What do you do when a service charge is included.? Do you apply your rule in all countries or just Thailand? Surely tipping is based on quality of service and the likelihood of you frequenting the place again. Your rule just seems contrary, meaningless.

If you were 75, a widower, not excited about chatting up a widow at the bingo parlor, don't want to remarry, and still appreciate beauty. I'd say you could see the positive side, as would the happy young lady setting the price. Also many arguments support the occupation in many countries. Freedom of choice and all that.

Absolutely.  A good response to know nothing, right wing evangelicals and or rabid feminists.

It’s the same the world over - the traditional bars ( brothels in Thailand ) where if you were a bit horny and wished to meet up with a like minded person are closing down .

Many punters have woken up to the fact that you pay more for a drink in a seedy bar in Bangkok than a swish 5* hotel - it’s greed .

So a few clicks and ( hopefully ) some gorgeous young lady , hunky young man, lady boy etc will arrive shortly.

Quite refreshing that many have commented negatively on the OP’s idea of a Thai experience- there is really no positive side to prostitution.

Sex workers in Thailand have very positive lives of wealth  freedom, independence, choices of both long-term and short term partners and relationships, the opportunity to have a non village experience.etc. It's a life of liberation for most of them. Anybody who thinks differently has no experience but is just judging based on homebound hypocritical moral values. Not reality.  Sex workers in Thailand generate enormous wealth and economic and social benefits. The term prostitute is only used by damaged hurt people to make them feel better about themselves.

What I don't understand is why anybody frequents these places.

Plenty of other things to do in life.

The naive poster gives a very misleading impression and stretches the concept of ripp off. He only has to buy the drinks for the people he chooses. If he can't say no..that is not a rip off just him not knowing the game. A fool and his money are soon parted. The art off The game is to have fun and not get bitter. If he is a tight fisted budget back packer type then go go bars might be beyond his means. But to answer your question about why people go to such places: sometimes they are great fun and you end up with a great girl for a few hours, the night, for a few weeks,  for years. But if you self victimised as a loser who gets ripped off then that is what you will be. It will define your experience.

Yes , Chiang mai doesnt want attract the drink all nighters until the sun comes up and sleep all dayer crowd , better they stay in Pattaya

I doubt it is a municipal decision, certainly not from a democratically elected local government. I suspect you are projecting your own feelings about Pattaya. I am certain you do not speak for the people of Chiang Mai. At any level, at any CM council meeting- is there a record of Pattaya ever being discussed? I reiterate: Pattaya's freedom is the envy of every local government in Thailand because it creates massive wealth and massive employment.

In Thailand no tipping is required thanks god for that not having to go thru this awkward phase every time you finish a meal or check in and out from a hotel, of course that there are mainly tourists that spoil this for everyone else, but if you must give, anywhere from 2% to 5% is advised...

In Thailand tipping is the norm.

You must be mistaken , its been midnight closing since curfews were lifted in 2014 .

Before that bars were open until the last person left

I'll check with my Pal.  Maybe Loy Kratong..Maybe the year or mourning. Either way after 11pm CM seemed like a city under occupation.  Anyway midnight is far too early for me. When I was there in 1990 it seemed more fun.

You were probably better off posting this in the Chiang mai forum

By posting it in this forum you only get guys such as Johnny the disability pensioner from Sydney posting negative replies because he has nothing to do in his council flat
