  1. ah, this ain't hot...

    Ruck up!

    Warm with alot of humidity.

Sitting in my house w/o the a/c on, no fan and my azz is a sweating bad...but comfy

Sounds like you might have some internal heat issues going on..

Drink alot of fluids, water not alcohol.

Yep, cold shower and sit in front of the fan

Ice bag under your arms, armpit area also and on the neck...

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate...until your urine is clear or very light yellow..NO alcohol, it dehydrates ya...

and if it gets worse, ( feeling bad ) consider getting more electrolytes on board. ( gatorbarf type stuff)

John, the desert rat from Arizona, where it gets to 120 and it's really hot.

I agree, light yellow, but I've found short cut...... Chang Draft in a frozen mug, gives you that ' o so good burning sensation' in the pipe all the way down and it comes out light yellow.

My deepest thank you for the Rx Doc

  2. As I sit here with a icebag on my head, looking as though I have been on a all night drunk, I would like to ask, does anyone other than myself think that it is hotter this year [past 2 - 3 weeks] than it has been in years past?

The days seem a few degrees hotter and definitely the nights. Wake up in the morning and am wet with persperation...

Used to always sleep with at least a sheet for cover, but now want no cover at all.

Is there any website that record daily high temps on a day by day by the year basis.

    It just feels hotter.

  3. All responses seem sane and logical, and would appear to all be possibilities.

But here is another that may be possible. If, and only if you have a automatic transmission in your car, which I don't think was mentioned. There is a neutral limiter switch on the tranny. Sometimes you get the click, click, if thus switch is bad or going bad. If you bump your tranny shift stick from drive to neutral or any other position, it may not connect properly, If when you tried to start after getting the click, click and then moved or accidentlly bumped the gear shift, it may have connected and allowed you to start.

Again if you have an automatic transmission.

But I would look under the hood to see first the battery post connection to be loose or corroded. If you ever do see this corrosion, and do not have a proper cleaner, a baking soda, water solution will help wonders.

Just some thoughts from an old tinker-er

Hope you have by now solved the problem

  4. I found out why restaurants keep the condiments in a basket and bring them to your table when your food comes. Apparantly if the restaurants leave the condiments sitting out they all get stolen.

Who the hel_l steals half a bottle of ketchup?!

    He who has only 1/4th a bottle/

  5. Understand from a tuk tuk driver, that there was, in CM, a fatality . A 19yr old male on a motorcycle got knocked off his bike by a forceful bucket of water to the face, a 4 wheeler following him couldn't stop or didn't see him in time and drove over him and he bike.

    tis the season.

Prayers for all who are out there having such a good time.

Must be the high shopping season for the Grim Reaper

  6. I would rate them as in the top 3 Mass. schools in CM

I have known students, who have gone there and they all express nothing but the finiest of terms for the school.

While I cannot tell you specifically what they do when they go back home, it must be worth while as I have seen several of them come back for additional levels of training.

Most of these schools , [in my opinion] are nothing but PR sessions. give a little of the basics and have a graduation ceremony, give a diploma and out the door you go.

What most impressed me about this school , TMS, is that a couple months ago there was a guy here from Spain who had already gotten to Level 5, whatever that means. His class was taken to the Uni Hosp here to view and study a cadaver.

This really impressed me. I didn't think any of them went to that extent.

I would say you could not go wrong with them .

  7. Somewhere in the earlier posts, it was mentioned something as to governments and people from that stated country.

Most Americans traveling today do take heat over their nationality. But I have found that after venting frustration with the American led government, most 'ventors' deflate then , and mostly, get on very good with the very same American. This is probably human nature and its no different with people from Burma or most anywhere else.

I'll say this ,, I have no love or patience for the Burmese Govt. but almost to a one, the people in Thailand , that are from Burma are very nice people. I think most people feel that way. It is when a certain group of people take on the actions in mirroring the errors of their respective govts and starts forcing this on people that the trouble begins. I have been around this town for 20 some years and have never seen a sign saying No Burmese. I can only assume that they do not offend other people or establishments with their ways. And if you do not agree with something they do or say, well then they seem say , ok you have your ways, I have mine and go about their business. Not so with some of the posters on this forum present and past. It appears that certain posters are not satisified for you to have a differing opinion, they will dog you and dog you and insist that you change your opinion to theirs......... People like that are easily disliked ... Wonder Why

  8. Strangely enough, about a brazillion years Iago took 2 years of French while at Uni.

Today I would be lucky to count to ten in French.

I guess I just don't have the tongue for it :o

Again strangely, in my business life of some 40 years since uni, I never got to a situation where the French language was needed, but many, many places and times where it would have been much better had I taken Spanish.

Having said that, and being in a hospitality related business here in CM, for almost 12 years, I have , in the past year to year and a half, had more guests from France than in the previous 10 years combined.

It seems that the French have found CM in greater numbers in the past year or so. Even a couple of French from Burma ?????

  9. It amazes me how racist Thai's can become when talking about Burmese people, especially when some of these Thai's are still in the feudal paddy fields themselves! Its an argument I've had several times with Thai friends, old prejuidces die hard I guess

If you grew up here you might understand. Surrounded by 'enemies' all your life. Similar to what Israelis go through, I suspect. And the govenment and parents and teachers all express these feelings...

Clarify please. Are you comparing the Thai people of today with with that of the Israeli ???

  10. Anyone know about handicapped license plates? When I went to get my drivers license they gave me a hard time and the"once over" several times because of my severe limp...two bad knees needing replaced long overdue. They must have something along the lines of handicapped stickers or something because at Rimping (Limping for me) at Mee chok plaza they have a handicap space...even has fresh paint

Being as you are already familiar with " Limping Meechok Plaza " at that same plaza, right at the front corner, right by the crossroad intersection at the red light, there is a 3 or 4 story clock tower. Go in there and ask. Being this is Thailand, be prepared for the disabled to climb a flight or two of stairs.

Let us know how you make out

    and

boycott Air Asia and Nok Air as unfriendly skies for the disabled

As a disabled Veteran I find when flying airasia the outside wing seats are very refreshing, and the instant flush outside toilets are amazing :D Nignoy

That wing seat toilet sure puts a new meaning on blow dried, or blown away

  11. US$1,000/month - Poor lifestyle

    US$2,000/month - Basic lifestyle

    US$3,000/month - Reasonable lifestyle

    US$4,000/month - Comfortable lifestyle

This is based on my opinion and the lifestyle that I prefer to live. I do not go cheap.

    I second the motion.

Now I know where the term "Cheap Charlies" came from

    :o:D

  12. I'm thinking about retiring soon in Chiang Mai. Is US$1000 per month enough to live off? I have no dependents and in good health. I don't need much but enough to enjoy simple things in life.

    Yes and No

Unless you have something more in the bank account, you won't be able to get a visa.

I got over $600,000 as of now plus small pension(current $1100/month) at 60 and SSA at 62(current $1500/month). I'm kind of young to retire but will get ED. O visa until I turn 50. I just don't want to work anymore but enjoy the simple finer things in life rather than work my ass off until 65 like my father did and die early.

I think we have a bit of mis communication here.

Earlier poster said 600,000 wouldn't be enough..... 600,000 baht, not enough by itself.......600,000 $'s US or most dollars except Zimbabewan , plenty , over kill//// at least until the buffalo owner comes into your life. If you do meet the buffalo owner, then insist on taking the buffalo to Oral Roberts, but no means offer any money for the healing

  14. I don't know about you but i'm sick of foreigners coming to this country and taking advantage of the system, stealing stuff and generally causing problems. If the Burmese chaps want to lear Englasih they should do what we all had to do and do it in a tax paying enviroment. Those Burmese have it too easy if you ask me.

With all due respect to you matey, I'm not sure I can agree with you.

I do hope and suspect that not only are you a newbie to this forum, but to the area as well.

I would suggest that you meet some of the Burmese that are in this country, befriend them and listen [once they get to know you] to some of the true horror stories from back home.

Listen to the stories about they themselves or their male family members being used as forced labor by the state or the army. Many never to be seen again. Talk to more and maybe you will hear stories similar to the entire village being rousted by the army in the early hours of the morning, the entire group being taken to an open area in the village and made to watch as a male village member is beaten, tortured, then shot, only to wound, then being buried alive, in full view of the remainder of the village. Probably makes waterboarding look like a baptism.

Get to know some of the expat element in and out of Northern Thailand that goes in and extracts what remains of villagers after the raping, beating, mulitating of these people who have had the bad fortune to earn the wrath of the Burmese Military. See some of the photos taken by these rescue groups, and then you say "These Burmese have it too easy".

No, I am afraid I cannot agree with you, because I have seen the photos, and spoken first hand with some of those who go to rescue. Do yourself a favor, find some of these people, both those who have gone in and those who have come out. Befriend them, talk to them as not talking down to them, but as another human being. Then revisit your above post, I do hope and pray that your opinion does become enlightened and perhaps even change

Only meant as constructive mate. We all have to live on the planet, and somehow live together.

  15. Again and again, the KEY word is Illegal ....

Breaking the law, to gain benefits cannot be condoned to any extent.

Those of us here in CM, who are here as legal , working expats know the extent we have to go thru to stay. Yes its a hassel and troublesome but we live by the law of the land. We want the goodness and satisfaction [to ourselves] we get from living here, we live by the Thai laws.

You violate the law and you will deported, and I believe at your own or your friends or family expense.

I see no problem with the program here. In the US catch the illegals, put them in a secured camp and on a publics work program til they build up enough funds to get them a one way ticket home.

  16. probably more to the story that we don't know about. Not to minimize UG's statement about not having better things to do. We aren't in Kansas anymore and we all know that most (not all) police here are nothing more than armed bandits always looking for monetary gain,in any manner they can. I spent my military time as a Military policeman. There the motivation was more of a power-tripping thing. I now have a feeling that anyone who wants to be a policeman SHOULDN"T be allowed to. There are good cops everywhere though and I realize that. With my experience though I found them to be few and far between. Most of the good ones retired in Thailand

Exactly the same feeling re politicians, either here in Thailand, or for Pres of the USA

Do not vote for those who want the job too much

  17. Kuhn 2 Dogs you seem very upset, as would be most people who have lost a good friend. Very, Very upset . He must have been closer than your closest friend.

Let the police do their work. You say he wouldn't have been drinking and he would't have been there with this woman.

Try not be too upset with the lady, or at least woman tour guide, even if it is hard for you to believe he was out all night with her. Whichever way you look at this from whichever side, remember. He1l hath no fury like a woman scorned. Well I'm sure you know what I mean.

Hope your friend rests in piece.

and Blinky, good to see you back ,,,,,,,, again.

  18. What is Chiang Mai doing, turning into another American election type of town?

After what seems like an endless string of weekend closings of bars, I thought that the last of the election had past.

Any body know what the story is with the guy # 13?

He must be crying sour grapes or something.

His is the only sound truck I see out today, but have seen about 3 or 4 of them together, about 5 or 6 times already today.

    Anybody know anything about it

    Gonzo

  19. Knew John pretty good even not seeing him in the past couple years. Really sorry to hear of his passing. Seems like the older we get the more friends we loose, until our number is called.

I do remember that he was quite a good friend of Leung Guy, [Guy Blakely] who used to own the old Flamingo years back. I used to see him quite regularily even after he moved somewhere in Issan to eat his bugs and guts as he used to say. If someone knew how to track down Guy, he may know how and where to contact Johns family. If not maybe the American Consulate has some means

RIP old friend , and save a seat for me.

  20. By way of update to a post I made yesterday

    "Cooking Oil 2005 339 Baht

    Cooking Oil 2008 745 Baht"

as of this morning make the same Cooking Oil 785 Baht

[taste now like North Sea Crude]

    Another Goodie

Same Store, Same Brand, Same Size Rice

    Feb 20th 08 5 K Bag = 105 Baht

    This Morning 5 K Bag = 130 Baht

That seems to be about a 24% increase in 2 weeks

It seems to me that many expats here are moaning due to the rising price of consumables.

Sad that no-one has mentioned the situation of the average Thai citizen who has to wear a 25% and more increase on their staples in less than a year. Wages for the average Thai citizen certainly haven't risen anywhere near this figure.

    Very sad indeed.

Most farangs in the kingdom do feel they are the center of the universe though.

That's why most of them are here..

    Incoming..... :D:o

What are you guys trying to do make a race, creed, color or what have you war out of Slaps Post?

I think we are writing about what we each experience. I am sure a Thai, Greek or even an Aussie, if they are shopping at the same stores of which each of us speak, will experience the same price increases that each of the posters now pay. So we are all getting hit the same.

So we are all getting hit the same you say..

Lets talk about the average Thai wage then.

Where did you learn your math ??

That's just absurd to say Thais are being hit the same as farangs (whatever color they are)..

Anyway, just vote for Hilary, she'll sort everything out.. :D

Lets run this by the superior math majors.

One year ago, the average Thai, earning the average Thai wage , went into or did not got into your average Makro type store.

Accept the same for the average Farang.

This year the average Thai earning the now average Thai wage , goes into the Average Makro type store or if he cannot afford it he does not go in.

Again accept the same for the average Farang.

Accepting also that if you go, today, into a Makro type store, I would say that the customer base would be approx. 90% Thai.

Maybe you would accept the fact that the Thai Baht has greatly strengthened in the past year.

Maybe you would accept that a good portion of the Makro Thai buyer is buying by the pick-up [ute] size purchase to take back to the little Mom & Pop store to resell to the near-by villagers.

It would be my impression that the Thai Baht has strengthened and the majority of the Farang monies have weakened.

As you bring up Hillary, lets talk the US Dollar. It has been hit very hard vs the Baht.

The average Thai has stronger [read more] baht to pay for the higher priced items.

The average Farang , if he be American, has a weaker [read fewer] dollars to buy the higher priced items.

Granted most of the farang monies have not been hit as hard as the US vs Baht, but most have been hit.
