A prime example of an island which long ago targeted upmarket tourists is.....Mauritius. Sure there are some hostels and budget accommodation but it is mainly top end 5 star, and more in the private villas attached to the resorts, luxury hotels and resorts. I have rarely seen backpackers.
Mauritius is very laid back with genuinely friendly people and the local cops will actually be friendly and help you.
A lovely island where I am going to put my feet on the beautiful beaches. Residency for retirees is a cinch and can be granted within three days....yes three days. It is certainly not as lively, lady wise, as Thailand, but it suits me now in my advancing age with my absolutely wonderful Mauritian partner. Mauritian women are like chalk to cheese over the Thai women that many foreigners come into contact with.....genuine Thai wives/partners of course excluded!
My time living on Phuket are over. I just can't cope with all the constant hassle and looking over your shoulder any more. A racist government, total lack of police and legal security and corruption beyond the norm now.
I had such a great time travelling Thailand from corner to corner 35 years ago. A true paradise then. Lot's of you here will remember what a stunning, friendly laid back country it was then. Alas no longer......????
The Mauritian lady I was married to was completely bonkers, as was her entire family.
The area where her family originated, close to flic en flac was far more edgy than
anywhere I have been in Thailand and it was not advisable to go out at night.
There are big drug problems on the island among the young and raging alcoholism
among the older. A lot of men went to Perth in WA and formed gangs and have
brought that culture back home.
Like Thailand, if you lock yourself away in a gated community away from all the
riff raft, then it is indeed a luxurious retreat and the 5 star resorts are incredible.
Also the Chinese influence/control is on the same level as Thailand, they see it
as a strategic post in the Indian Ocean and have poured billions into the place.
It's a great destination for a holiday, lovely for honeymooners, but I personally
couldn't live there.
I'm not saying Thailand is better, my rose tinted specs don't hide everything, but
given the choice I would take Thailand every time.

Just savour the fact that there are no Chinese by the bus load at the moment. But, by Christmas they will be back...maybe in lower overall numbers but still by the bus load!
Are you saying they will get smaller buses?

But but but, a bloke in the pub (or it may have been a post here) said that someone
was arrested, paid 10 grand tea money, got a visit from immigration and was deported
and blacklisted for ten years (after a fortnight in the IDC) just because he put the rubbish
out one night!!

I stuck a bin in the road, to dump all the
plastic waste, me neighbours all use it,
and a lovely old lady comes with a trolley
every couple of days and carts it off. I give
her a glass of whiskey and a chat every time
and everyones happy.
Don't know your position, but if you can, it
might be more of a social solution, rather
than getting the law involved.
What does the old lady do with the waste? I hope she doesn't burn it!!

So you post an excerpt from a Thai site praising Thailands COVID response meant for Thai people, and you did so in reply to my post asking you why nobody talks about Thailands COVID response other than Thai people.
If it's meant for Thai people, why is it written in English?

Do you ever wonder why pretty much nobody talks about Thailand's COVID response other than Thailand and people with vested interests in Thailand?
Well, the 2 Japanese authors of the OP were talking about Thailand's (and South Korean) response
and the source wasn't a Thai news outlet.
Damn I broke my rule.....

Opportunity to boast about not getting a second wave. Possibly if it arrives they will call it Thailand The Hub of third waves.
Not sure who is boasting, Thai visa copy and paste an article written by a
couple of Japanese people showing a graph reflecting infection rates following
the decision to impose restrictions on the general population.
Bash away to your heart's content but try to do so where relevant.

I didn't realise SWA flew to Thailand

Avoid Koh Tao - it's known as death island for foreigners- Google it - run by the drugs mafia with no regard for Thai law. The last place in Thailand, I would even consider visiting.
There it is......
Tens of thousands of people go there every year without incident.
It may well be ruled by gangsters and of course there was that awful
murder and subsequent bungled investigation a few years back, but
to fear going there because you think you'll be murdered is ridiculous.

Just the opposite, they are doing the community a favour. Dirty, diseased strays, and there are millions of them, are just a health and safety nuicence as well as noise pests. There is nothing socially positive about these mutts along the roads and round shops. There are better ways of killing them than poison but killing them is what needs to happen, neutering is like trying to empty a sinking boat with a cup. Amusing that people get so worked up about the prospect of millions of dogs being killed, when they eat others that are also killed in their millions, stray dogs are just other animals.
Humans are just animals as well, we just evolved and invented religion
and nuclear bombs.
We function precisely the same way as other mammals, we are born, suckle milk,
go on to other food. Poop and pee , reproduce, get old and die.
We just think we're special because we complicated things in between birth
and death.

Loved enough to give it scraps, but not loved enough to take care of it including VET checkups, healthy dog food (no rice or cooked chicken with bones), and a safe place to live.
Is there a medical reason why dogs can't eat rice?
Every dog (and cat ) I've lived with have eaten chicken bones regularly without incident.
Innate heard tales of the bones splintering and choking them, but never saw it myself.

What is it with these headlines? It would seem Thais are rarely responsible for their own actions. Headline should read " Thai woman caught trying to smuggling ice into Japan". You would think by the OP's headline she was forced into it. She didn't do this for anyone but herself. At any time she could have said "NO"!! The proof is in the pudding, she's going to jail.
Not many drug mules would be capable of arranging pick ups and drop offs.
They can only do it, and get paid, with organisation from gangs.
So in this case it is appropriate to mention the gangsters.
This doesn't negate the fact that smuggling drugs isn't a bad thing.

Could you please point me to where in Makro are the ready made food, Thai dishes and salad bar located?
Not sure about Thailand, but in the UK there is a seemingly random selection of
items whose price is tracked to determine inflation, it would be impossible to
track the prices of every single item sold. Perhaps your specific items are not on
the list.
It seems that oil prices account for a big chunk of the low inflation rate.

Agreed. I would do at B+ blood donation regularly if not for age limitation.
What is the age limit?
Just googled it, under 55 years old for 1st donation (I'm guessing in Thailand)
And 60 is the upper limit.
There are weight and health clauses as well.

Not long back there was a young boy "expert" motorcylist ripping around the Sankhampaeng area of Chiang Mai on a Superbike. He was such an expert that he managed to wipe out two young school girls in Bo Sang.
Cool story bro, but irrelevant to the OP

Hmm from one extreme to the other.
The only thing I agree with is she is not his daughter and some caution should be exercised thus should be obvious.
As for my own daughter, I have never been terribly concerned about it when she was a child and neither was she.
she is older now and because she understands privacy and seeks her own it is a non issue.
If an accident would happen, I would expect or offer an apology and move on.
Your indignation is almost as funny as his ignorance.
You would expect an apology if you exposed yourself to a teenage girl?
You're as bad as the OP.
I spent some time with a bar girl a while back, she was a very open minded lady in some
circumstances, but I had some swimming shorts which got very clingy when wet and the
poor girl was absolutely mortified and rushed to me with a towel to cover the offending
area.
Showing your man bits in public or in front of a teenage girl is a big no no full stop.

Sounds like the president of the USA, I thought Reagan and the 2 Bush's were bad

It's sad that despite his apparent dislike of China, I believe that he admires the
absolute power the government has and uses at times of dissent.

Fun fact
People here like to wear these to try and protect them from a virus, but when they are trimming/cutting grass they don't bother.
Seems like going blind is less of and issue than catching a virus...I bet you have an impressive wardrobe of yellow vests The richer, "hiso" folk probably
don't do a lot of strumming or other manual labour, so not really an issue.

I worked for about 15 years in Europe as a designer of space flight hardware and integration manager of spaceflight and ground-based projects, mainly for European Space Agency science projects.
When I moved to Thailand around 2002, I applied for a vacancy as head of space research, a position that I was well-qualified for. I was rejected out of hand because I wasn't Thai...
Although I no longer work in the space sector (I'm an online science teacher), I still 'dabble'. I've designed and am currently building a Cubesat in my living room (it's a small satellite that's about the size of a Rubik's Cube).
I'll give Thailand a miss with assistance. I now live in Laos ????
Being such a clever clogs, you would have thought you would join, or even
create a Laos visa forum for superior expats express their sadness at living there.
