  1. Personally, i use a fee free Credit card (Halifax clarity)  and make 2 x 20,000 baht withdrawals per month from Aeon ATM's which only charge 150 baht per withdrawal. My credit card gives me a similar exchange rate to transferwise and the ATM fee is about the same as Transferwise's fee (on a 20,000 baht withdrawal, it works out as 0.75%). And i get my money on demand. I do have Thai bank accounts and deposit some of the baht i get in them to take out when i need more.

I did try Xe.com, who were even cheaper than transferwise, but i got hammered by the Thai bank instead (more than for a swift transfer!).
I'm also clarity so at least no UK fee but getting fed up of the 220 baht hence investigating....

Didn't know Aeon.... Are they in Hua hin?

Interesting.... At 150bht ( per wd of 20000) the 70 baht saving might make it not be worth my while bothering moving money to Thai, id have to run the numbers again

Interesting re K bank no fees and no card too. Less of a security issue. I assume you use a bunch of numbers but there's a branch near me so I'll check it out!

  2. Check out Transferwise if anyone hasn't already advised you too as I haven't read any of the replies to your post yet.

I live here and transfer a lump sum to last me a year, there is no charge from my bank when the money is deposited or upon withdrawal from the ATM as long as I use their ATM in my area.

Transferwise give you the best rate and that's after they take their one time fee.

Check out their website, easy to register, scanned copy of passport, couple of questions to answer and it's as easy as pie as they say.

Just remember, it's harder to shift money out of Thailand, than it is bringing it in, suffice to say, maybe shift 50% now and whatever else you require later, however you will pay a fee to Transferwise each time, alternatively if you send it over once and will be returning at a later date, the money will be there in your account when you return.

Just stick to your monthly budget and your laughing, as for paying 220 baht for each withdrawal from the ATM with a limit of about 20,000 to withdraw per time, that's highway robbery.
Seems like Transferwise is the very popular choice! I will get cracking with them

Wondered if anyone could comment on the other part of my post that referenced Bkk bank fees for wd atm 300 baht y1 then 200 per Yr after that. My instincts tell me their might be a bank who won't charge me any fees and maybe I should open an account with them?

    Any comments on that part?

    Thanks again re Transferwise [emoji106]

  3. Obviously it's a little more trouble to move money into your Thai account, than simply to use your UK ATM card.

However, 220THB per transaction using your UK card, compared with approx 20THB from a Thai account, is a factor of 10x more expensive every time you use an ATM.

If you're very well off it may not be worth the bother, but I'd do it for sure. Financially, it's not as broad as it's long.

    [emoji848]
It's nowhere near as simple as that but thanks anyway

  4. I'm certain many others have had this dilemma!

Trying to weigh up all the pros and cons of getting at my UK cash in Thailand for weekly expenses.

I have an account with BKK bank I just havent 'funded' it yet. For years I have just gone to atm, withdrawn from a UK account( nb but one with no fee applies) and pay the 220 baht ATM fee

Wondering whether to move the cash required for rest of trip (5 months) into my Thai acc and withdraw it for 'free of charge'. Nb Not actually free as Bkk bank charge 300 baht per year for atm card!(are other banks free to wd cash?)

It's not a straightforward calculation as there's an element of loss of interest from UK account.

Sometimes I think its as broad as its long!

    Thoughts and tips please?

    Thanks

  5. Asking for a friend... Who's not very good with money!

Anyone know details, or can send a readable link, re AIS monthly call pack... Eg 400 bht per month all calls/networks etc

My thai lady friend is paying way too much and thinks I'm nuts!

  6. Fingers crossed I will soon be in Hua Hin for quite a few months.

I have a longstanding wrist condition and it may require another steroid injection.

The Orthapedic Doctor at Bangkok Hospital in Hua Hin does not inspire me, in truth, and more importantly he cannot offer an injection using the modern method of Ultrasound guidance( must have had the training). He can only do it 'blind' which is less likely to work and carries a little more risk.

I'm sure I could get one in Bangkok somewhere but does anyone have any knowledge or experience of Ultrasound guided steroid injections performed in Hua Hin?

If not, then assuming the next place is Bangkok any recommendations there?

    Thanks

  7.
*900*1973# 1 Mbps over seven days. 107 baht.
*900*8777# 2 Mbps over seven days 107 baht
Thanks KneeDeep for 7 day codes. My intention is to purchase a 7 day 1mbps pass on touchdown at Swampy and test it.

If 1mbps is OK, which I assume it will be(you use it for general use so it should be) then I'll buy the 6 month one.

So for 6 months at 1mbps.... have I got this right?

Truemove h directly... 640 baht(Is this one capped do you know?)

Truemove via Lazada 370 baht( but capped at 200gb, shouldnt be an issue)
And lazada one will have a seperate sim/number but if I'm using it for data only it shouldnt matter. Plus it will take a up the other sim slot in my device.

I've never used lazada so don't have an account with them. But I know someone who does so that might work

    Thanks again

The codes are Truemove H, since you told that you have a Truemove H SIM. If you prefer code for another network, let me know.

All SIM allow tethering regardless of network. Do not discuss anything with any salesperson as they will simply mislead you.

Take the advice from here, actual users. Don't try to confirm anything with them.

If you are travelling from the UK, perhaps invest in a 4G MiFi. I paid £20 for mine. They are around £35 in Thailand currently.

This one, for an instance; https://www.gumtree.com/p/modems-broadband-networking/unlocked-4g-mifi-perfect-working-order/1314516137

Of course, I don't know your location, so just an illustration.

Equivalent in Thailand, something like this; https://www.lazada.co.th/products/huawei-4g-mobile-hotspot-e5573-unlocked-i113879436-s117713341.html

So if you are there for six months, invest in a MiFi. Don't know about signal strength at your place. Hopefully good.

You can either apply the package to the SIM and then slot it into the MiFi(it then creates a WiFi signal to which you can attach up to ten devices) or slot it the SIM with enough credit into the MiFi and click on an appropriate link.
Applying beforehand is usually the easiest for most.

If you are likely to download and stream films, I would think about a 10 Mbps package. But you'll need to check as to which network achieves 10 Mbps at your particular location, by testing with each network SIM if need be.

I'm not sure why you would need 1 Mbps if you intend to utilise for downloading and streaming.
Also, the fixation with call packages. Totally unnecessary in this day and age. Especially if the SIM is in a MiFi router, you won't be able to use it for calls anyway.

I would look at a minimum of 6 Mbps for home use. Though many here state that 4 Mbps is enough.
I have 10 Mbps, as I have to download large files and don't want to be waiting for hours...

So if you want 24 hr Truemove H codes...

*900*1799# 26.75 baht 1 Mbps There is 2 Mbps for the same price, but no long term pack. *900*8776#
    *900*8910# 31.03 baht 4 Mbps
    *900*1744# 36.38 baht 6 Mbps
    *900*1796# 44.94 baht 10 Mbps

True codes are cool, yes I'm true(I misunderstood your prev message re AIS). I asked for 7 day but I'll assume they don't exist and I should just do dailies until im satisfied re speed(more flexibility that way)

Call packages--I've never done a costing on these and I assumed the right calls pack would be cheaper... are you suggesting these are a false economy? If so, then yeah I'll stick with PAYG. Don't make that many calls anyway so I'll bin that idea.

Tethering--wow! Lesson learnt( I suppose they might just say that as they can't be seen to 'supporting' it? As it might encourage people to just share?)

Streaming TV content and 1 mbps - see next point

WiFi - woke up to message this morning from Condo manager stating my room will have WiFi after all! Therefore I can go back to plan A and trial 1mbps for mobile data (mind you I don't know if this WiFi will be any good.. )

Mi-Fi - will look into anyway for future rooms

    Thanks for everything, top detail!

  9. 31.03 baht for 1 Mbps over 48 hours *900*1752#
    41.73 baht for 4 Mbps over 48 hours *900*1753#
    52.43  baht for 6 Mbps over 48 hours *900*1754#

That will give you ample opportunity to stress test.

Sorry KneeDeep do you have codes handy for 7 days rather than 48hr? 1mb & 4 mb.
Gives me more time to settle in & test.

Assuming these are AIS so I'd need a basic PAYG sim

Also keen to know if I can tether those to my lappy? my condo may not have WiFi and thinking why bother with router and installation if you can just run off the moby? Not that I've ever truly tested that concept! Connected once to it, on a limited data sim and crikey it burned quick! Any downsides? Does it drain your mobile battery like Billy-O? Is service as reliable as wifi?

    Thanks

  10. My plan A might have to go out of the window!

Just found out my condo probably won't have WiFi

In which case I would look at Plan B.... a mobile data pack for 6months which is strong enough to tether my laptop to, to watch footy golf and dramas. And preferably including say 100 or 200 mins of calls (not essential)

Maybe some of those are mentioned above(nipping out now will tackle later)

I'm certain Tru told me earlier this year that tethering with them was out absolutely of the question!

Any recommendations glady received especially ones I can trial first. Cheers

Ps I assume thats people are doing these days, not bothering with WiFi contract and just having one mobile source especially as temporary (6 months)

  11.
    1. Yes. They can be utilised on an existing Truemove H SIM.

    2. Depends what deal you want. If 1 Mbps for six months, just tap in *900*9959# and it will cost you 642 baht. But....that particular code states valid until 31.10.18 and apparently you will arrive later than that. So you'll need to recheck/remind after the 31st.

    3. If you get a SIM on the same network, you won't be able to port the number. No free calls are included. Usually around 1 baht per minute.
    Thanks again!

Naturally as I'm coming to HH for 6 months I'm interested in saving money on my previous plans ie PAYG calls plus a 1 month data pack(213 incl tax)

So calls and data pack for 6 months would be ideal if tru offer at reasonable price

But I'm happy to split them if lazada (data only) works out cheaper... Or any other combo.... I'm a proper skinflint!

I'll get on the websites tonight, thanks again for the Intel.

  12. The OP has now awoken from his UK slumber!

Disappointed re new sim cards. I currently have a Tru sim card (PAYG) with a number I'd prefer to keep ideally

    Three Q's

    1. Re those USSD's given yesterday , surely those can be punched in on my current set up(no new sim needed)?

    2. If I then want to take up that offer longer term(hopefully 1mbps will be enough I agree ) on those attractive terms, must I go through a lazada type deal requiring a seperate sim? Will assume Tru not offering..

If so that would mean having to take out my UK sim(dual sim phone) which is just a minor ball ache.

    3. Unless of course these cheap data packs also come with calls? In which case that will have a new number which is OK no ideal(possible to change?)

Sorry many questions, normally id call tru but I'm in UK (plus they may not offer these deals 'directly' anyway

    Thanks

  13. What, no freebies?!! [emoji39]

Cool thanks KneeDeep will try 1mbps on arrival

Another job ticked off my list... Only 25 more sleeps! [emoji23]

    31.03 baht for 1 Mbps over 48 hours *900*1752#
    41.73 baht for 4 Mbps over 48 hours *900*1753#
    52.43  baht for 6 Mbps over 48 hours *900*1754#

That will give you ample opportunity to stress test.

  14. Great intel, will sort on arrival cheers KneeDeep

They have various packs covering six months, dependent on the bandwidth you need.
Cheapest is a six month SIM from Lazada for around 370 baht inclusive of postage, which gives you 200 GB of data over six months, capped at 1 Mbps.

Otherwise you can simply add a six or twelve month package to an existing SIM. Not sure if it's a typo, but Truemove H charged the same for a 6 & 12 month 1 Mbps unlimited package, at 642 baht.
4 Mbps for six months is 1498 baht.
If you need more speed, you can take on of their 90 day 6 Mbps or 10Mbps packs for 1070 or 1445.50 respectively.

  15. Never used AIS only tru
I'm used to 22mbps but interestingly do I need that speed? Almost certainly not

But is 1mbps too slow? Maybe I should try it and see. As you say should be OK for basic chat and checking websites. No point in paying for speed you don't need

I would try it for 1 month and if ok then pay for 6 more(I have dual sim)

    Thanks

AIS also has 4 Mbps, 6 Mbps & 10 Mbps packages. Do you have problems with them in your location?

Sent from my Redmi Note 4 using Tapatalk

  16. In UK now, coming soon.... but do tru do one for 6 months?

The 12 month pack is about the same as me doing 6 x 1 month packs hence why I'm interested if they do 6months... If you happen to know or have a link

    Cheers

No need for a rental agreement, but a clarification, I have the same address for almost 10 years.

thanks Sirocco, will assume one gets this 'appointment' upon arrival at Immigration

Not suggesting you are, but clearly 'you' could be just telling them you are still at the original address, because as im reading it, you dont need to actually prove it! Seems odd that you need a new rental agreement if you have moved, logically you should have one for wherever you are at that point, or not at all.

However this is LOS and i will smile and follow the orders!
