Elderly rice farmer dies in field blaze in Udon Thani
richard_smith237 replied to webfact's topic in Isaan News
You are educated & understand this… The farmer isn’t - takes ‘burning short cuts’ because he’s allowed to & it saves costs he may not otherwise be able to meet. The governments all over Asia are accountable for the pollution when they ‘allow’ their citizens to repeatedly behave this way. It’s the very same of polluting industries not being penalised. It’s the same for allowing those horrific fume belching busses & old polluting lorries (with common brake failure).. Its the same when they never do anything about the clocked pickup trucks belching fumes. This issue of pollution in Asia is multifaceted - one farmers death will not change this no matter how satisfied some posters are to hear of a poor man who burnt his field dying a result. -

100% agree - there a plenty of posters on this thread virtue signalling an element of schadenfreude, that sits very negatively & highlights an absence of deeper consideration towards these issue. In the haste of many to jump on the environmental bandwagon they ignore or forget their own contribution which presents a stench of hypocrisy to accompany the schadenfreude - ultimately their comments betray their absence of critical thought. Burning fields is wrong - but there’s a lot more to it than one man, a few farmers, or even a majority of a nations farmers - this is a continental issue & one on which fiscal policy & international trade has a huge impact. -

A rather binary outlook which, as I mentioned simplifies & dumbs down a complex issue into a singular myopic view point. -

I have never been married. Missus then - but it’s obvious where your continued bigotry comes from & you’ve been called out for your anti-Brit obsession numerous times on this forum by numerous posters. Had anyone else posted this story it could be taken at face value - you dug & searched for anything anti-Brit to fit an agenda - you don’t care about those children, otherwise you’d be highlighting other examples too… you only care that this was a disgusting Brit who perfectly fit your agenda. -
It is disgusting, but is also an indicator of ‘socio-educational-economics’…. The educated do no eat like this… (for the most part)…. But those who Thai’s would classify as being placed lower on their ‘pecking order totem pole’ may more readily observed Witt poor dining habits - much like anywhere else really. Some Westerners have clearly never been taught how to eat.

😶🌫️ if you don’t know that are you one of those who also eat with your mouth open ???

While I whole heartedly agree with the sentiment expressed that this behaviour is abhorrent the Op [Goat] has only one interest in mind here. His posting history makes it more than clear his sole interest is not in the welfare of these girls, but in the slurring of anyone & anything British. By his own omission - he [Goat] doesn’t like Brits because his Wife left hime for a Brit, he has since become extremely bitter & bigoted towards Brits. In this case he has scoured the internet looking for a negative story to fit his rhetoric, struck gold & found a horrific story the horrible nature of which everyone agrees with…. Yet the motives for posting this story is purely anti-British bigotry. As such, I find using this story as a platform to push his anti-British agenda both manipulative & disgusting - a true measure of the character of this bitter character [Goat]. -
Your question seems to be - Could HM Passport Office refuse to issue you with a renewed passport as an overseas citizen because of an overstay - thats a possibility.... (but not an answer I know) But if they do refuse your existing Passport remains valid until expiry (and in your posession), so its still possible to fly out of Thailand, deal with the overstay at the airport and accept the ban etc. The risk is someone from VFS checks the stamps and reports you (VFS is who the British Embassy outsource their Passport renewal to). Follow on question: Are you attempting to 'renew' your passport under the assumption that this will clear an overstay ? - it won't Immigration have digital records and will tie any new passport into existing records through biometrics. Options: 1) Pay through the nose to an agent to clear the Overstay (risky and I don't even know if this is possible but guess it is if you find the right agent). 2) Take the hit, fly out, pay the fine, accept the ban, return legally (any new passport will still be tied to the old one and information linked)

As usual my Thai wife Ergo, you ??... I wonder if the eating 5x in 2 hours would have existed if they were paying for the food themselves ? Anyway, it was probably inexpensive and they were in holiday mode and wanted to try a number of different things hence the numerous stops... I recall being in Chiang Mai and going to a 'well recommended' Khao Soi restaurant with friends - we weren't even hungry, but it 'just had to be tried'..... (and it was excellent too !!)...

Its not acceptable.... Yet much of South East Asia (developing areas) do this... From Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia... and they are all competing with each other to export cheaper rice crops... This 'cheaper' solution is not carried in in Western nations because taxes are collected, agreements are made, subsidies are provided... and laws are strictly enforced across the area (i.e. the EU etc)... I don't see anyone agreeing with burning of the fields - I do see some taking enjoyment that this has cost someone their life, I see others who recognise the tragedy of some dying while cutting the same corners many every other farmer in Asia do. Environmental Heath / clean air is a massive, no one argues that.... but it is also the Governments that are 'letting this exist'... almost enabling the behavior. -

This is an oversimplified and dumbed down outlook matched with a superiority complex which highlights no true understanding of the issue at hand... -
Just curious - who was paying for all this food ?

No need to bring Trump into it.... Op mentioned its the Wife's money, so its up to her how much she spends, Op isn't spending a baht, but wants to be sure or understand that his wife is not being taken advantage of somehow... thats admirable....

Nonsense Agreed... it reads like a mongers outlook to Sin-Sod... The reality is each sitation is so very different from another and takes a little understanding of the social dynamics, socio-economics, education levels etc and even where you are located etc. One of my Wife's friends received millions of Baht in Sin-Sod - mine was nowhere near that, but money was returned anyway. Wedding costs totalled about 1.2 Million Baht and we received that amount in envelope money (it was a large wedding with a lot of guests most of whom neither my Wife no I had met before - lots of friends of the 'In-Laws' - they all left fairly early on and about 200 friends enjoyed the after party with band and DJ's until about 2am)...

Correct... So they were experienced... She [the Amphur Officer] seemed extremely fastidious which may have made her slower, and of course, I have no frame of reference as to how quick the process should be as that was the first and only time I've been through the process.... Although she took a shine to my Mother In Law (who was our Witness) and they were having a little chat through the process. It would be interesting for new people about to go through the process to know how long it's taken for others. - Yellow Book: about 2 hours) / Pink ID: about 10 mins - And the slowest part was getting the Translation of the Embassy Verified Copy of my Passport approved by the MFA, which had been carried out a couple of weeks before hand.
-
Perhaps... but it was very long winded with a lot of paper work, nothing was done on a computer that I recall... Just lots of paper being filled out, then filed. She got stuck into it and got on with the process and appeared to work efficiently - there was just a lot to do - the officer was very polite and friendly, she just put up some resistance at the beginning. The Pink ID too mere minutes (max 10) as you highlighted, but that was after the two hours (about) that it took to process and issue the Yellow Book. Numbering suggests 400 non-Thai's issued with a Pink ID before me. IMO - they knew how much hassle it is to process the Yellow Book hence the initial heel dragging. I suspect a lot of Amphur officers try to find a way to avoid going through the process, they get paid the same if they do this stuff or not. We had a similar issue at a different Amphur office when my Wife and I processed our Marriage - One officer was quite rude (she was an absolute stinker) and outright refused.... we walked out and were officially married within the hour at a different Amphur office without issue - some officers are plain lazy.

This is true - especially shorts !!!.... Last time I renewed my licence the grumpy old bat at the DLT testing centre told me to get out because I was wearing shorts (I had some on standby in the car). I told her, no problem, I have trousers in the car... But what about the 3 Thai guys in the game group wearing shorts ?????? !!!.... Suddenly my shorts were no longer an issue but she wasn't pleased when I popped out and returned 5mins later having changed into trousers anyway !!!...
