  1. Another airhead here (CPLetc.) It is the. Captains call. Handling pilot would call for checklist. The aircraft ain't going to drop out of the sky with a suspected gear malfunction. They were fuelled up, no immediate threat to life, cargo or airframe. After immediate checklist actions and referral (possibly) to POH (Pilot Operating Handbook) and conference between both pilots, and poss. Chf Engineer on the ground, the Captain would have made the call to make a precautionary landing at the take off alternate, fuel

dumped. He most likely would have declared a PAN rather than Mayday, and taken control from the FO (First Officer) if he was the handling Pilot. Training clicks in very rapidly, raised heart rates in cockpit, ground facilities long alerted. Job done.

There you go folks, from an experienced person. End of

  2. Hmm, this response is difficult, understanding that I am having a beer waiting for the Liverpool game. Let's try however. What do women think of such things a Viagra? Well from my perspective not a lot, and although I have a loving wanted wife, I am 65, she is twenty years younger. Yes she is educated, yes she is a Chinese business lady, and yes she is conservative AND Chinese as previously stated.

She has asked me not to indulge with the little blue pill as it's not natural and health damaging, but she like millions or maybe billions of women world wide probable thinks that her partner, husband, taking such is not capable of allowing his body to perform naturally and reacting to her supposed charms ! In other words needs stimulation to perform with her. Surely this insults the loved one and is sure to create issues which includes lack of confidence from the woman.

Of course taking a hooker for the night, and paying her off after your Viagra induced wham bang thank you ma'am is a different ball game if you don't stray.

There are more than two sides to every story.

  3. My sympathies to all his friends and family. I don't know Raymond or his restaurant but I'm somewhat saddened to see so many posters saying that now he has passed away they won't patronise his business. Surely if he had a good, well-run business it was also because he had good people in his employ - maybe family members, friends, locals. I would have thought his business needs supporting now more than ever. A good businessman will have a good succession plan in place and good people ready and able to step in.

Totally agree, no business is a one man band, staff are more important but it is so sad that people are so shallow, hopefully the restaurant will go on with the same standards

  4. I think the question should be, which supplier will show it. Right now it's a legal case and it's not guaranteed to be shown in Thailand.

On a side issue, I saw here on TV the latest channel line up from True, apart from them losing the EPL I cannot see why they get such bad PR. Today I watched the Bradley fight, no one else seemed to be showing it. I watch a host of other sports and decent channels on True. Of course they are a business, and what they offer should be accepted and paid for, not bitched about. So all this Truevisions knocking seems to be getting quieter, and dare I say it cancelled punters going back to reconnect with tails between their legs.

  5. So you were making 41,000 and that was low end??? That is quite shocking for me... From the forums Ive read about working as a teacher in China.... Most people are quite happy with 12,000... And Ive never actually read of anyone making over 25,000, that would be EXTREMELY well qualified. This is why I was in the belief that 12,000 was quite good.... A lot of people I see post salaries of around 9,000 or 10,000 and are happy. I'll have to do more research for sure!

I can assure you of the figures mentioned, but as I stated as an engineer. And a then 55 year old with years of experience. The Chinese wanted my experience, they even have a "foreign expert" category for visas to get around any niggling difficulties.

Let's take another look at the salary offered, which you seem to accept,, 12000 RMB at today's rate is 1944 USD, 1160 GBP or 62000 baht. So keeping to the USD conversation and taking on average 30 days in a month, that gives you spending power of say USD 65 a day. Taking your possible expenditure into account, plus salaries taxes etc, I honestly believe life will not be as easy as you are hoping. As others have said, it seems there may be room for you to moonlight, however, your work permit/ visa will be tied in to your full time employer. You can also trust me when I say the Chinese police are a different ball game from their Thai brothers.

  6. I do not know Shenzhen but I have taught in China - grade 10 English immersion. There are Canadian curriculum schools using English Immersion in China which pay very high wages compared to Chinese teachers. You must have a degree and a Canadian teaching certificate.

The students are great. They work till 10 at night studying which makes the job quite easy. The students will love you if you respect them. The night life is beyond compare and Chinese women want you as much as Thai women. The exchange rate is not as good but 12000 RMB is a good salary but not the best. You will have no trouble living on that salary. You will have many opportunities to subsidise your income with additional teaching jobs. I worked 4 hours/day for $ 18000 RMB/month.

The downside is the hard resources are scarce - no teacher stores. The schools seem to have little for paper or art resources. Photocopying is good but centralised. The Chinese government takes ownership of children in High School and parents cannot excuse their children easily. If there is a holiday you will have to teach Saturday and even Sunday to make up for it. The other downside was the Chinese 'assistants" teaching a shadow Chinese curriculum that they denied doing and thus overloading the children. 10 of my 12 students are now at very good established Universities in Canada so it did not hurt them significantly.

If I were to do it again i would make better use of the large format video screen in the classroom and use the internet that it was connected to in order to employ the excellent resources of youtube. Any topic any subject and some very good teachers.

There is unlimited English teaching jobs in China because the Chinese government has mandated that children will take English classes from the age of 5 up. There are many English only schools in China. Many Chinese would love to emigrate and they see this as one way to do it.

Two points here Greg, the first being that YouTube is banned in China and so are VPNs. Of course you can get a VPN but using it to show a Chinese classroom YouTube would not be very bright. The second point is that Shenzhen, as mentioned earlier borders HK and is described as one of the most expensive cities outside of Beijing and Shanghai.

  7. From what Ive heard... 12000 is quite good, and much higher than the general population...

How about the girls? As approachable as the Thai girls?

I am sorry I disagree with you. I actually live in the area and have done for over four years. Your stated figure may be higher than the general low level population, but you are not in that category, you are a foreigner, your tastes are different your life style is different your accommodation requirements are different.

Assuming you have to pay your own accommodation, which will be your home and castle I personally would not share it with three or four others, a simple furnished one bedroom apartment in a relatively comfortable area will set you back possibly 4-5k a month, a beer at a western style bar will probably be anything up to 50rmb a pint, add on to these, visa costs if you have to pay for your own, electric and water etc, I think you will struggle.

Are you a fully certified teacher ? If you are then you do have a limited amount of leverage with your school but I can also tell you that Shenzheen is"home" for many foreign teachers, primarily Filipina. Why don't you do a search for Filipina Teachers in Shenzhen, you might just find a few wee nuggets of information.

As for Chinese girls being approachable, hmmmm, due to the Chinese culture and family strengths, they are relatively conservative they are also seen to be materialistic, but I do feel that on your salary, there may not be too much of an interest in you. And also realise that there are many Chinese girls working in Shenzhen who would be on a higher salary than you. It's interesting to note that Chinese workers are very much migrant labour. They go to the cities where the jobs are available, and I am sure they wouldn't move away from their families for a peanut salary.

When I first started work in China, as an engineer not teacher my salary was 35k a month, with 6k a month allowance for accommodation and free visas, and I was classified as a "low end" foreigner.

  8. Shenzhen is a vibrant city literally bordering Hong Kong. However, and being blunt 12k RMB a month is attractive as pocket money but no where near the requirement if you have to pay your own rent etc.

I know a lot of teachers in China, and their statements on teaching here are almost all the same. Teaching in China is great as the kids want to learn. But ensure that you get the school to comply fully with visa regulations and make sure you get a multi entry so as you can skip across the border at any time you do wish to.

As for nightlife Shenzhen has the lot.so no sweat there.

  9. There we were we last night, soft lighting in the bedroom, air con a comfortable 22c I turned over, pulled her tight into me, touched her erect nipples, then softly ran my hand down to her Venus, she gasped and said, god I love you, but the clothes I bought today are so Isaan I think I want money again tomorrow to buy more Bangkok upmarket clothes. Don't worry whilst I am gone the fields will be taken care of by my brothers !!

Can we sleep now, shopping makes me so tired.

  10. Yes, I also was thinking this already. Thailand is not the LOS (land of smile) any longer. It seems to me like a marketing trick. People are smiling only when they want to get your money but not because they are so friendly. Especially in the main tourism areas like Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket this can be observed. If they detect that you are not a stupid buffalo than they stop smiling.

It isn't? Funny that, I find that once you get away from the girlie bars and the ghettos full of moaning retirees, Thailand is actually a very friendly country. But then I do tend to actually meet and greet Thais, not just sit in a bar and bitch about how much better things were 20 years ago,

But Hanno, were you actually active here 20 years ago, and talking from experience or purely surmising ?

  11. Ahhhhhh......It is so comforting to read so many people here playing with a serious question responding just what they think about the Government, the country, and its people...in ways that do not add nothing positive or useful.

No...we do not have insurance...but..Yes...It is help, a community help that act fast and without bureaucracy...believe it or not....and it roofing free material, if not money. I am asking about Government Program that I know exist for this kind of problems, but we never need it before. If you do not know about...shut up!.... If you know about...or your wife used it before, I will appreciate your info about....By the way...Some people here gave me good info too...not EVERYBODY is here just to talk bad about Thailand...

I know....in your country if you do not pay insurance or you are poor, you are in big trouble....and the Government do not give a sh....about your problems. ...but this is NOT your country...this is Thailand, with some good to talk about....

Oh dear ! Wrong time of the month is it ? Just to enlighten you, storms are actually recognised as acts of / god / nature. Please explain to me and others why tax payers should pick up the tab to help you to recover when you saw fit not to take out insurance, and as a final farewell, from your approach and writing, I would suggest Thailand is not your country of birth neither so glass houses and throwing stones come to mind.

  12. Topics such as this more often than not results in responses that were not asked for nor required. It does appear to me that answers were posted by persons who obviously knew China, others from persons who do not know China, then those from people who would probably have trouble finding China on a map. Please don't misunderstand, I am not knocking anyone, but I do think that if any responder has not lived in China for more than eighteen months then their knowledge of China is still limited.

And let's make it clear, China the PRC of, is hugely different from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and dare I suggest it Geylang.

The shear size of China, with different Provinces, different tribes, cultures and yes even different dialects ensures China is able to throw up challenges for the unwary. It's a country that is very much about "horses for courses" a responder suggested Kunming was very pleasant. I hate the place after living there for a year. Another stated Beijing and Shanghai were not pleasant. But are they any different to other concrete jungles anywhere in the world ?

Would I be happy living in Urumqi in the top north west, definitely not, Harbin ? No thanks Shenyang? No too cold. Yet in any of those mentioned cities you will find nightlife and naughties as you will in any Chinese City, it's just not so blatant as Pattaya for example.

I spend my time commuting between China and Bangkok as we have offices in both, we have a lovely property in Donnguan and it's a city, in a region I like very much. Yes Dongguan is huge, but it's not a city built using height, it is very spread out and generally more low rise than skyscraper. It is very clean, it is very green and being in the South it is semi tropical. Being one of China's "factory cities" it has it's fair share of expats, western styled and owned bars and restaurants, and if it rocks your boat, it is also know as the sex capital of China. But again very discreet.

The cost of living here is comfortable, I don't think I have ever heard of any one complaining about the cost of a beer but that could be because the expats here are different to the majority in Thailand. Most here are working, most for huge companies such as Nike, Puma etc. And on good packages, they don't mind putting their hands into their wallets.

New and second hand cars here are a lot cheaper than Thailand, gasoline is cheaper, fresh food is cheaper, telephones cheaper, electricity and water probably cheaper, however house rentals are probably higher.

Transportation very good, there are three international airports within a two hour drive, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and the HK border crossing only 70kms away. Want a change of scenery or a couple of days away, easy, drive to Shenzhen, park the car, and within two hours I can be in the middle of it all in HK. Fancy an upmarket beach weekend ? Simple a forty minute flight lands me on Hainan Island. Great beaches, sea food and 5 star resorts.

So has the OP made a good decision, depending on where he is looking in China, I think he has. Would I rather be in Dongguan than Pattaya, absolutely, would I rather be in Kunming than the boondocks in Isaan, possibly. Let's not forget the expression " one mans meat is another mans poison"

To the OP I wish you luck but do your homework.

  13. How about Camp Bastion as a target, a final farewell to the outgoing troops ?.

    Wouldn't get close enough!

Why wouldn't it get close enough ? Are you talking fuel wise ? If you are talking camp bastion has air defence, I would suggest you may not be on the ball on this one .Sure they may be able to scramble defensive jets and shoot the 777 down, but even if this happened the effort would be recognised

  14. ...in China love and affection are calculated in money terms...as it seems the Chinese father has money I would certainly ask the daughter how much he will contribute to her further education

Thanks for your input, a very good question.

  15. Let's take Into account that the shipping lanes as well as air routes on the original flight plan, are probably the most busy anywhere in the world, yet only one report of interest was received, that from a kiwi oil platform worker. If this flight had come down where it was supposed to be then I am convinced it would have been spotted almost immediately.

We then hear that all transponders had been deactivated two of them, for just such security reasons, were located in supposedly hard to find places, yet all of them were manually turned off. Conclusion someone obviously knew what they were doing.

When I first heard about this aircraft "loss" and no debris found, my gut feeling told me there was more to this than meets the eye, then came the revelation that the engines performed for up to four hours after the supposed loss giving a range of an extra 2000+ miles. I plotted that distance and it told me that the plane was in range of the lawless part of Pakistan. I.e Taliban country.

If my gut feeling and plotting is correct, then god forbid, we are looking at another possible 9/11, BUT A QUESTION, the plane on its original flight plan could have been used against a host of major cities at that time, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore and even KL springs to mind, let's not forget, if any of these cities were targeted at that time, they would be struck in the very early hours of the morning. Why didn't it happen?

There are only two situations it didn't happen, one, those who supposedly hijacked had a much bigger plan, and secondly they didn't want to sacrifice so many lives most being Chinese. Does this point a question mark towards the Xijiang possibility, who want to follow up their Kunming train station atrocity, who the hell knows ?

Lastly and all forum magicians are eligible to answer, how in the world can such a large aircraft land without being noticed, and secondly, it's very difficult to keep 239 people quiet and out of touch.

Answers on a post card please.
