  1. Some help please. I am sort of forced to visit BKK for three days of meetings. Although having property in Chaeng Wattana I decided to stay nearer my meeting areas and have booked the Novotel Ploenchit.

    Help please.

I will arrive Swampy at about 3 pm on the 27th, due to a heavy case I could see the airport link being a bit of an issue, so I would like to know

A). Is a taxi from Swampy to Ploenchit manageable

B). My meetings are at Makassan and Wireless Rd, any issues around there and any transportation issues.

    C) what's the situation in the close proximity to the hotel.

    Many thanks

  2. I am married to a Chinese national, we reside in Dongguan, my wife is from Kunming. I know from experience that if she wishes to apply for a visa to anywhere, she has to go to the relevant embassy nearest to her home town.

As it happens, as stated there is a Thai embassy in Kunming, but if she wanted a UK visa or say an American she would have to go to Chengdu. So things are not that straight forward.

  3. Give up. She deserves better.

No wonder you have problems with western women. If you talk anything like you write, you wouldn't get a second date.

    .....

Clearly you are not a Western woman.

I am, and the way he writes struck me as thoughtful and honest, which to most women is appealing, not off-putting.

I am also a western woman & found the OP post to be quite pathectic, "sex twice a week" lol poor excuse for a male if you want my opinion

Yes unfortunately I would appreciate you opinion, are you suggesting that you want sex non stop ? If so I guess you are not married,! No I won't say more, it would be wrong

  4. Uk state pension is more like 140 a week but don;t get you happy face on as you will NOT get any increments and the government will stop 60 pound per week because you have chosen to live in Thailand

Forget Thailand as there are lots of other nice places where you will get your full pension and increments

    just look out

Try the Philippines for example, I have had my military pension paid to a HK account , but using a Manila address. I am not an expert but my pension through a philippine address is index linked. Strange as it sounds!

  5. Look,

There is clearly a few folks here who have NEVER seen nor thrown a fragmentation grenade (what it is REALLY called in the US military) - it is CLEARLY this type of grenade.

ANYONE who has served, even cooks, know better - those who claim otherwise probably cannot even tell you what a DD214 is (until they google it). White stripe - yellow stripe? Trick from the sunlight? Colorblindness? IRRELEVANT! i could paint a grenade to look like a tennis ball - it would do NOTHING to dampen or enhance the effects!

It is true there is a 5 second fuse on frag grenades (standard). But when 20 guys are huddled behind shields, in a chaotic area - they are lucky 1 cop spotted it!

Again, don't believe the idiots in this thread who bad mouth the cop and his efforts to try to kick away the grenade. They clearly have played too much counterstrike and never served their country - don't confuse their opinion as fact.

sorry but you are so far from the truth it is not funny, as I stated previously look at the white marking, this means it is a PRACTICE/UNFILLED grenade, not a frag grenade, any army trained person would be aware of this, the fact you do not even understand what the colour codes means or are for shows us all that you have never been trained with any explosive/live ammo in the forces as it is all colour coded so every man knows what they are handling, every single piece. You are simply googling crap and repeating it, you are definitely part of those few folks.

Totally agree and accept what you are trying to point out to the uninitiated , yes a white marked grenade does mean a training implement , and yes I am ex UK military and these color codings are standard within NATO. However would you agree that this was in fact not a training implement whilst having the force it did have ?

To be honest I don't give two shites about who threw it or did it have a nice lavender scent. Fact is it nearly maimed a serving officer, who in my opinion made a split decision to act to save his colleagues and take the pain himself. And that to me is heroic. End of

  6. Queue the usual 'Thailand, hub of...' posts and other crap.

I have safely driven maybe three quarters of a million miles in Los between 1977 and now. There's probably some who have done even more.

Sure it would be very risky for someone who had never, driven in LOS to get behind the wheel of a car at Suvarnabhumi and drive to (say) Pai on the pre-Songkran weekend... but who on earth does that?

There's loads of stats on what kills the most foreigners in Thailand but I don't recall it being driving related. Even if we look at the very high risk motorcycle accident victim, outside the tourists spots, you don't see a lot of foreigners on 2-wheels.

According to my calculator, that averages out at 56.3 miles per day, now that's not too impressive a statistic is it.

  7. Never had an hotel in Thailand where I needed to pay for parking.

At Pullman Khon Kaen e.g. you need to have your ticket stamped when checking out.

I think the point being made is that the car was parked in the Amari car park after the poster had checked out. That's a different ball game

  8. Yesterday evening, I started a post with reference to foreigners involving themselves in local politics, it was not intended to be a wind up nor, was it intended to be confrontational. In fact within quite a short time the topic received a number of replies, the majority of which tended to agree with my observations, it also received a number of "likes".

Then without any warning, the duty Mod came along, stating the Post was in the wrong forum and abruptly closed it.

Could it please be explained to me why my Post was closed, when it would have been very easy for the said mod to move it to the correct forum. The actions taken were, in my opinion very heavy handed.

  9. Yes I think you should be worried, even if it is not HIV, you don't need your house or it's occupants being put I to a health risk situation. Kudos to you wife for being so kind hearted and wishing to help, but less tunnel vision is needed, in my humble opinion.

  10. It's obvious that many posters here watch Hollywood movies. We can talk movies, or we can talk reality. In reality this man actually endangered his own man. The rule is to stay low and do not break the ranks. He did the opposite and actually increased the number of casualties. I don't doubt he had the best intentions. However he acted recklessly and exposed his colleagues to shrapnel by breaking the ranks. In reality he is actually responsible for higher number of casualties. Brave act - yes, hero - no. Back to your Hollywood movies.wai2.gif

It's obvious you never spent 1 day in the military. Armchair QB.

I have, and more than 1 day - 10 years. That cop made the right decision - other than falling onto the grenade. The shields would have stopped nothing and it was too close for everyone to get up and jump back 3 meters. People were going to get hurt no matter what -

pffft! what am I saying?!?! The grenade was a peaceful one cause we all know the protesters are all peaceful.

    Never mind.

If he had left it there then it probably wouldn't have gone off.

Fall on it? You have been watching too many American war films my friend!!

They could easily have jumped back 3 metres as that grenade was doing nothing until he set it off by kicking it away - If Thaksin had not loaded the hierarchy with his relations and police friends then they might have received proper training from real police!!

He is not a hero in my book, just a poorly trained policeman, that's all.

So now you are suggesting the grenade was booby trapped ! Laughable, as already stated on here, a grenade has a timer of seconds before detonating after the pin is removed and the grenade becomes live.

Kindly complete your day one of military training before getting too advanced with your worthless theories.

I seemed to have missed the bit where I stated that it was booby trapped - please tell me the post number.

You stated quite clearly that if he had not of kicked it, the grenade would probably have not exploded, which I took to mean he disturbed it and it went off, which is what I understood you have said. So a dormant explosive such as an IED only activates when it is disturbed, another name for booby trapped. The more obvious possibility is that as he was about to kick or did actually kick, was the exact time that the primer activated causing the grenade to explode. So in this case it would have absolutely nothing to do with a kick.

  12. We moved in to a house that had been empty for some years and had rats and gecko's on the ceiling, the snakes are under the house.

I don't think the snakes will easily go up and they don't make a lot of noise too, so don't worry I would say.

We got rid of the rats easy, the gecko's are still there and the snakes I also see now and then, although I don't think it's as many as before. We do have 2 small dogs and a cat roaming the garden so the snakes will be less enthusiastic about their habitat.

You obviously live in a very desirable residence. You have two small dogs and a cat and the snakes will be less enthusiastic? Dream on, at this very moment the snakes are probably writing their menu.

  13. Stupid question, I know... But, Suthep was not arrested at the meeting?

i dont think would dare, gerry adams, and martin mcguiness strolled about n.ireland pretty freely if you recall, presuming your english ofcourse,if not i apologise.wai2.gif

Totally different tactics in NI and well thought out. You can take the likes of Adams and Mcguiness off the streets very easily, but that does not ease the issue, it compounds it, as their supporters rally to protect.

The way it was done in NI was to use undercover SAS working with the Royal Marines who were the blockbusters, to eat away at the roots of the tree that was Adams snd Mcguiness. In other words take out the roots and the tree will surely die. And notice, the roots were nearly almost in "bandit country such as Armagh, crossmaglen, Londonderry and the likes" where they thought they were safe" they weren't and I know, as I was there.

Now please tell me how the hugely inferior Thai military can even dream of doing such things without embarrassing themselves ??

Then we have the next issue can anyone tell me who the Thai Army answers to ? If it's the government who are their bosses, then it's not sensible to bite the hand that in this case over feeds you, if it's to the royal family, the that's another open question.

  14. Coming to Thailand, and CM for the first time, and renting a bike or a car and navigating this city is a fairly daunting experience.Ok for us that have lived here for a while but the 2 way bicycle ways are just an example that you may not expect. The left turn at some red lights is also not on in my country, then we have red lights where no left hand turn is allowed until they turn green but people still do.

The number of, especially Chinese tourists, wobbling around on motor bikes and bicycles is quite scary many of them are obviously doing it for the first time.

Motor cycles that weave in and out, jockeying for prime positions don't exactly help either, expect it to get worse as the city gradually moves towards grid lock.

The number of, especially Chinese tourists, wobbling around on motor bikes and bicycles is quite scary many of them are obviously doing it for the first time.

Humorous statement considering the number of bicycles and cyclists in China must number billions

Glad you found some humour in my post but let me explain the millions of Chinese that ride bicycles in their own country are NOT the ones travelling overseas they most likely couldn't even afford a deposit on the air fare let alone the associated accom, food costs etc.

The ones coming to CM are middle class and up and they see the way to get around CM is by bicycle/scooter.These are not peasants they are well dressed, and educated, but not experienced in riding a bicycle or scooter.

Good and valid point sparkles, here in Dongguan it's the Bmw's, Jags, Porsches that are the problems, hi so new rich kids plenty of coin but no driving licences or skill, both driving wise and socially.

  15. It's hard to keep all roads blocked when you only have 23 elderly protesters and 200 hired thugs left in your camp laugh.png

Better to have 200 hundred thugs, than the 20,000 thugs that are currently being employed by u no who.

Luk Mhee what are you trying to say, I live on Chaeng Wattana and I a totally innocent citizen as are thousands of others, yet our life style has been ruined by these irresponsible children who have captured us. Personally I'd don't care a <deleted> that the government offices have been closed but I pray that I could get my hands on a decent sniper rifle, from 600m these thugs would have no idea what hit them and from where. If that happened I am sure they would disappear quicker than could be imagined. They are cowards hiding behind numbers. I would like to suggest that all innocent people refuse to pay taxes and whatever to make a point

  16. Just bring out the army already, do the traditional massacre on Ratchadamri or some other key point in central Bangkok and get it over with. Everyone knows this cycle will end that way. it always does.

    No way Briggsy,

    I have another cunning plan..............................................

    original.jpg

Why not have an early Songkran to get rind of "The Mob".

    original.jpg

    Win thumbsup.gif

I would go along with that idea if the leader would come out of hiding.

Instead she sends the court jester.cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Ah a bit of good news at last, the failed high tech fire truck purchases have been released and starting to earn their money. Great

  17. Is it wrong that I feel little sympathy towards the Thai police?

Oh hurtful comment Stradavarius , really hurtful, do you not feel any compassion towards them having to do their job but losing out on the back handers at street corners and under the table money that they believe is their just rewards for doing sod all.

This is hurting them badly, no extra income and on top of that they will be struggling to maintain their fat bellies which will mean a downsize in uniform, paid by tax payers. It's sad to be sure

  18. And who said the protesters don't have weapons. More lies.

    Please calm down.

This is just an isolated incident.

I am sure it is just an accidental discharge.

Not the fault of the protesters.

    I won't happen again.

Suthep's protesters came in peace and with no weapons.

Every violence, every human rights offense, etc., is just a "maipenlai" in Thailand, we all know, and we all "Must Respect" this sick culture! Or be "punished"!

Agreed it was just an accidental discharge, but the weapon must have been a 105 Pack Howitzer
