1. There is crime in Chiang Mai as there is in any city but for the most part it is safe, more to the point it is definitely safer now than it was 20 years ago.

    CB

Yeah, there are much more dangerous Western cities, but Chiang Mai definitely has problem areas too. You may have lived here for a long time, but your view seems to be through rose tinted glasses. Try Chiang Mai Land at 3.a.m (especially at weekends), or some of the late night Tai Yai haunts, you'll soon see real violence - and a lot nastier than a couple of drunken Farangs swinging punches, I can assure you. If anything SDH's view is tame, what about guns and open gang warfare? Plenty of it about Farangs just don't get to hear of :D .

Seems Burmese/Tai Yai are often involved in incidents (my Tai Yai friends seem to attract trouble......or maybe I just keep the wrong company :D ). It always amazes me that Thais treat Tai Yai as second (or even third) class citizens, abuse them and use them almost as slaves, deny them basic human rights and then wonder why they run around robbing and fighting! Then they don't have ID cards, and the BIB can't trace them so they get away free. You reap what you sow! Much could be done to address the social issues behind violent crime here, but I guess many of those who could do something are benefiting from the plentiful supply of cheap abusable labour.

Of course, if you stick to the sterile tourist/ex-pat places you'll be reasonably safe (LoiKroh ladyboys aside :o )

Yes I agree with CB, your view is that of someone who watchs from afar and quite possibly through rose tinted glasses! :o

How about the Samuri Gang? :D or the new start up version? :D

How about the Tuk Tuk drivers ganging up on unsuspecting Farang (alone) outside of that dump Spicy? :bah:

How about the Tai Yai guys who get attacked on a regular basis (usually alone) as they have no bank account and carry what little hard earned cash they have iwth them and of course the obligatory moblie. :bah: In these cases the BIB will not offer any assistance. When they're attacked they more than likely will come back with their crew after breing released from the hospital and it's on then, machetes a flying. As for them getting away free that's not always true, if you pay the BIB they can track them down but this costs extra (this service is not included in your municipal tax charge) ;)

Good luck on your late night travels,

    SDH.

  2. Apparently there is a rash of night crimes going on lately.

    What's with recently?

I've been living here for about 3 years and ever since I've been here there's been night time violence.

One friend slashed and stabbed in front of Bossy for a mobile phone. :o

Another jumped and stomped for a motor bike and wallet by the YMCA. :D

5 Myanmar crew went in a Relax karoke and slashed up 4 of the staff with machetes. :D

These are just 3 incedences that happened to people I know, I hear about something almost every night. Be very carefull and travel in groups if possible.

  3. I have experienced curt attitudes in the past from Chiang Mai farangs, and often they make it patently obvious that they don't want to know if other Farangs attempt to attract their attention with a chat, hello or a smile.

I was reading your post and thought to myself, this could be me with the curt attitude! I often can be seen with the belligerent attitude to other Farangs :D the thing is after years of living overseas and about 4-5 of the last of them in Thailand it gets hard on your head :o .

For example has anyones evr noticed that there are no cooks or drivers in the military in Thailand (expats), everyone I've ever talked to that is X-Forces are either Rangers, Special Forces, Black Op's, CIA, SAS etc :D . After hearing this crock o siht for years you become weary of strangers.

However I've never ever given the cold shoulder to someone who asked a polite and direct question like you did, let alone what I consider an assault on them. These are the same kind of guys who wind up with a bottle cracked over their heads in the locals around town. They keep that up and they will certainly find out they are not as bad a_ss as they think they are!

    Keep the faith :D:D ,

    SDH.

  4. Wow frequent flyer cards are BS? I guess then that trip I took in first class for free using air miles from Bkk to London was BS!! :o

good on u mate! :D read one post prior to yours before you get all excited about posting a reply.

Yup read it mate and it still doesn't make any sense! :D

  5. Otherwise you could try Bangkok furniture. Big showroom on Mahidol road - if your heading away from airport plaza towards San Kamphaeng ( the 1317, right ? ) it's on the right a few hundred meters before the river. They did a good job on my place. Speak to Vichian the owner. Not the cheapest but good quality and efficient.

I'll heck it out for sure....Thanks for the help! :o:D:D

  6. Hi Everyone,

I've got this condo and I need to put in a granite counter top with sink eith a round table attached at the end and a kind of bar behind it. Also I need to buy and get installed some wooden warddrobes and other things.....

Does anyone know of a reputable contractor or designer in Chiang Mai? Preferably with a website?

I saw some stuff done by Archanddesign and it was very nice but I cannot find them.

Thanks for any help in advance :o ,

    SDH.

  7. On my last several arrivals at the Chiangmai airport (this year) after having passed through immigration in the Big Mango these dummies (at CNX airport) pick up your bag / suitcase and say "oh, very heavy"

I fly in through there from overseas about 6-8 times a year...I don't even wait just through the bag on the X-Ray machine, let it go through grab it and walk away. I don't even look at them just grab and walk, not once have they called me back as only a complete :o IDIOT :D would bring contraband in.

They pick it up for the weight looking for excess alcohol, you're alowed one bottle only, this and excess cigarettes is a cash cow and they get to keep the excess.

  8. I plan to spend a few weeks in CNX in January and am

wondering about what seem to be THE hardcore ravers'

place : the Boost club (turn right 2km after Chiang Mai Lang).

Is it still alive and worth a visit ?

    JH. :o

:D Dragonpub from 01:00 to 03:00 then it's off to "V" club or Plim from 03:00 to 06:00, the Dark's okay to but only on Friday or Saturday nights. :D:D:D

  9. That's the ugliest furniture I've seen lately.. :o

so YOU own the factory then? :D:D

Okay thanks everyone for the help, from the posts I think it's a terrible idea and my friends that were going to receive this stuff as gifts can go out and buy some crapola in Canada.....Better for me to send some shiny beads 555555555555!! The friends were here in CM and saw some, then on their return to Vancouver wanted it sent there at my cost of course (ah friendship).

    Thanks,

    SDH

  10. At what stage of disassembly do you want it. Bamboo furniture normally comes assembled otherwise you'll have miles of bamboo.

I wanted it at the stage just prior to slapping it together....What I want to do is stuff a container of the furniture and ship it. I'm thinking that as you pay by the cubic meter a person may want to optimize the container.

    Thanks for your help!!!!! :o

  11. The price of bamboo can't be compared to the price of any wood, yet it's overpriced in furniture, in my opinion.

How right you are...The stuff can be bought for almost free yet the furniture costs a pile :D ??? Wonder why :o ??

I think it's quite possible that their may not be enough factories to produce this stuff or the ones that do are price fixing. I don't have a problem with price fixing it just leaves the door open to entrepreneurship, however I'm not at all interested in building bamboo furniture 555555555.

    Anyway thanks for the help!

  12. Hi All,

I'm looking for a factory that builds high quality Bamboo furniture (good stuff) I've seen the stuff for sale down by the Goodview going towards Rimping Condo (Bears Den) it's really sturdy and has padded cushions. Thing is I need it not put together yet.....So if anyone can help that would be great. :o:D:D

    Thanks!!!!

  13. I'm just trying to decide if this girl is worth 'serious' consideration. If she wasn't Thai, then yes definately. But she is, so...

:o So does that mean if she was from the "Great Country of New Zealand" she would be worthy of sharing your noddle soup...Or maybe you'd have to cough up for a Songteaw ride....

  14. Just curious how many people have had their house, condo, or apartment broken into?

My house got broken into 3 times :D in Chiang Mai, turned out to be some people who worked for me and knew where we were all the time. Screw that crap I moved into a high rise condo with a bunch of security, no problems since!! :o

  15. my favourite club in cmai has to be v club, great crowd great music(funky house/old skool and trance)always busy.

volume 1,warm up,monkey, and fashion house are good too.

    Foxy,

What's the deal with this fashion house? I've never been there and heard even less about it??? :D

What would be the easiest way to get there? Do you know??

Inside Central Kad San Kaew around the back and down basement level.

went a couple of times about a year 1/2 ago, divided into two parts- hip hop, and techno/trance.
