  1. First thing you have to do is open a brokerage account. Preferably an online account. Interactive brokers is a fairly large company that you might look into dealing with. You can google stock brokers Thailand and I am sure you will find many names there. The company you eventually choose does not have to be in Chiang Mai. Can be in Bangkok or even Singapore.

You can open an on-line account with one of many brokerage firms but you must apply in person and be screened for money laundering before the account is approved. There are many firms in Bangkok and a good percentage of them have one or more branch offices in Chiang Mai such as Kim Eng, CMB, CGS, etc..

If you are thinking of an account in Singapore, keep in mind that many of them have an extremely high minimum required to open an account; some as much as 30 million Thai Bhat and that you must travel there to open the account.

There are some restrictions in Thailand such as: if you are an American and want to buy U.S. shares, you must sign a U.S. tax form that they will hand you. Another restriction for U.S. citizens is that you can not open a GBP account or buy shares traded on the FTSE. Thai shares are O.K. Tax in Thailand is I believe 10% plus whatever the tax is in the country you buy shares, such as Switzerland and many countries in Europe automatically take 35% off the top of dividends so you end up paying 45% tax on dividends.

Okay cool, thanks for the help!

  2. Good thread; heading there in due course.

Actually my Thai wife thinks the food sucks but she thinks If the food is not Thai it is no good. That is the only problem we have when we travel.

Ahh, the ole Thai number one lark. Thankfully, I don't have to put up with that rubbish with mine, she's open to most others' foods. Thai food's alright but a bit one-dimensional. My advice: dump her at the border and pick-up on the way back if you really have to. wink.png

Better yet, you could leave her at home! Surely there must be some cleaning or yard work to finish up!!!! tongue.png You could send pics of you and your new friends enjoying in PP with out her!!

  3. Cigarettes are cheaper, Guinness is cheaper,

what about the Duke's I might consider moving there to escape the in laws

I found the food to be rather expensive in PP.

Its ghetto there - no like, i was actually very happy and relieved once i crossed the border back into Thailand, felt like i was back home again

Even talking to the immigration guy at the Trat border was like music to my ears, so much nicer than Cambodian immigration.

Cambo Immigration were really friendly with me, we even sat in their office drinking beer (they had it in a cooler, packed with ice and very cold), so hospitable! clap2.gif

  4. What would ANchor and Angkor Beers compare with? How about cigars? Are there many casinos? How would a fan room compare with CNX?

What's the soi dog situation like? Do people put beer on ice there? How about the condo market? Thanks folks!

    Okay,

Casinos in CM - Underground, need an introduction and very dangerous, plus they are illegal.

Beer CM - Can get anything imported and expect to pay for it, as it speciality.

Cigarettes and Cigars CM - Konstantin has found out that they're very difficult to find besides the low end stuff, 1-2 stores stock speciality, once again bring your wallet.

Beer on ice CM - yes hey pur beer on ice here, but upon request you can have it straight up.

Companionship CM - Like everywhere in the world you can find varying levels, you can find a lot of information on other sites, remember prostitution is illegal in Thailand, the legal age is 18 but why not hold out for 20.

Condo CM - Condos here are cheap, readily available and never increase in value, reason is they just build more, there's no zoning laws, if there are they are not followed, parking is a problem, traffics getting worst by the day.

    tongue.png Hope this helps out!

  5. I've heard that there is good pizza in Chiang Mai, but I haven't found it in four years here. Why Not? Restaurant on Soi 11 off Nimmanhaemen comes close, but many would probably disagree. At least he's Italian, and doesn't skimp on proper ingredients. A worthy effort, and a good selection of other Italian dishes at reasonable prices.

Okay I'll bite, what restaurant on Soi 11????

  6. There's so many people who like this KSK, but come on when it was built there was not a lot of quality building materials used, maybe they should just knock it down, Cetral Pattana have enough money, they could donate the land and make a park 55555555!

  7. The water appears blue and clean so I don't think its Ob Luang?

Seems there are around 3 places referred to as Grand Canyon of Thailand. Seems the post about near Ob Khan National Park is correct.

It looks great, you can see it from the plane on clear days, but these pics bring it to life!

It looks like (once you've checked for debris and depth) you can easily take running jumps, wow so cool!

Swimming anywhere is dangerous, it's tragic that these 2 youngsters passed away, however we will be jumping off those cliffs!

  8. No such luck. 7-11 it is I'm afraid.

7-11 sell brand's (LM, Marlboro, etc) but quality this cigarettes in Thai - very bad

im looking shop where i can buy cigarettes good quality

sometime im buy in duty free on the border, but border so far and so im look shop with same quality in CM

for example in Pattaya have shop where can buy original russian cigarettes

Hi Konstantin, on the corner of Canal Road and Huay Keaw road, there's a liquor store (by the police hat, open all day and until 23:00) there that has a tobacco booth inside, they have all kinds of specialty smokes.... I hope this helps! w00t.gif Smoke them up big guy!

  9. Hubby got a suit at Fashion King in the Night Bazaar area -- it's the best looking-suit he's ever had. Frank, the owner, measured him and was the one who made adjustments when Hubby came in to try on the partially finished suit. There was no "seamstress tailor" doing the fitting in the shop -- just the owner.

We expecially like the way that Frank talked with Hubby during the sales process to learn how often he'd wear the suit, where, what he'd be doing when he wore the suit, etc -- he didn't try to oversell, but instead recommended fabric and style that was exactly right.

You have me worried when you say the Frank wanted to know how often and what your husband would be doing when he wore the suit. Sounds to me like one of those paper suits they were selling in North America several years ago.

No far from it -- he wanted to know if Hubby will wear the suit mostly in Thailand or in a colder climate and what type of meetings/events he'll be attending when he wears it. You could wear something more creative if you worked in a creative industry and you need something more conservative if you attend meetings with Thai government and banking officials.

The suit is beautiful and amazingly never seems to need pressing -- he just hangs it out in an area with good air ciruclation for 12 hours and it's good to go again.

Thanks for clearing that up. I really was worried because I intend to go to Fashion King within the next couple of days.

Fashion King made me 8 shirts, fit is perfect, yet my body is not, looks like they know their trade....

  11. If trying to get rid of birds, most Thais use these. Here is one of several sites that offer them to get an idea of pricing. Thailand Airsoft

    SlingShot_L1.jpg

If you hit anything with that chances are you've practiced plenty...

This is the one you need to buy, anyone know where?

  12. Correct me if I am wrong, but word was that a ferry service out of Chiang Saen was in operation that precluded a visa. This was supplied by the casino and the only requirement was to attend the casino?

Is it a fact, if so it would be very convenient, I usually go to the Myanmar casino on the Island, but am looking for a change....

  13. Place where i mostly shop has 4 bays, in 10 years there has always been some vendor selling something in that area, awhile ago was a good one, a old 123 Benz with a disabled badge on parked very close, and blocked the way in to the entrance to the vendors tables, he go out and off he went in his wheelchair, with lots of shouting from the customers and the vendor, Security came and tried to push the car but brake was on....

The disabled man was Thai, thought it was a good one, of course it made no difference as there is always someone selling something in these places.. Isuzu trucks this week.

Terrible isn't it, the sidewalk/disabled parking mafia.....

  14. Hmmmm,

I'm not so sure it's the same, looks like it may be pretty much the coolest place (mall wise) in Northern Thailand, let us see how they all stack up, I know for sure it has to be better than what we had KSK and AP, the Tesco kind of place this is not for sure...clap2.gif

It appears to be fairly high end, that's good because you can't take that money with you!!!

  15. It'll do OK - a big new multiplex and high end shopping in CM's trendiest neighbourhood? The traffic's a bitch but a footbridge would steal a lot of pedestrians from Nimmenhamen and I hear a new condo is on the cards for the old Think Park site opposite (despite the fact that someone already built something new and as yet unused there). The real question is how long will KSK struggle along with competition for many of its tenants stronger than ever before although, come to think about it, it's uniquely down market as malls go - maybe that's its niche!

Yup, KSK is pretty much a dump, I was washing my car there not long ago and took a look at the support pillars, they're showing some visible cracks, so more than likely all or most anyway of the customers from KSK would go to MAYA. I think?

That park, what is it? They moved some cranes in there not long ago??
