Fixing Thai education is not just a matter of money
bamnutsak replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Peel 30% off the top for graft, theft, and kickbacks. It's not the most corrupt ministry; seems like everyone feasts on this one unlike the usual where only a few top dogs get the bulk of the skim. That's why the comparisons with other countries' metrics (money spent/results) are so bad for Thailand. But then this is the goal, so let's give them a Thai "A" as a grade. A Thai "A" is a D+. -
Juvenile violence sparks national police chief’s call for tougher laws
bamnutsak replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
This knee-jerk response, building more prisons, to increased crime rates is to be expected from the Police, and the powers-that-be. That's the only box they can think in. God forbid they improve the education system or the judicial system. -
Nonsensical editorial with a flawed premise, which seems to excuse all previous machinations by the establishment as if that influence has disappeared. Key passage from the linked article... His ousting in the 2006 military coup was the culmination of a power struggle that many argue was less about addressing corruption and more about a calculated move by the establishment to usurp democracy and subvert the will of the people. His subsequent sentence in absentia in 2008 for abuse of power has been widely viewed as an extension of this plot, a means to ensure his permanent exclusion from Thai politics. This has a familiar ring, thinking FutureForward and MoveForward, to it. Thaksin has already been "released" either to his home or a suite in a hospital depending on your gullibility, and as of February 22 he will be free. Not sure what the point is except to say that the Establishment has the power to do anything it wants to maintain its grip on the Kingdom.

There are some dramatic 'before' and 'after' photos. If there is anything positive in this disaster it is that the factory was situated remotely (from inhabitants) in rice fields. The explosion at a fireworks factory in Nathirawat province last July was in a populated area, with fewer deaths but far more injuries. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaZfLkdjC-w

He got off lightly. Not even a slap on the wrist. Does his brother, the current Minister of Education, own shares in this company? -
Prison officials say Thaksin eligible for parole
bamnutsak replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
It is in the sense that this change in stance is being floated to allow the inmate to be released today, without an ankle monitor. Of course, most assume he hasn't been in the hospital for weeks, so this theatre seems even more absurd. Previously it was assumed he had to "serve" six months, meaning he would be released on 22 Feb., 50% of his one-year remaining sentence. But, for some reason, they're deviating from the original "plan". -
They are slipping the May launch date. BREAKING: The 10,000 baht digital wallet handouts scheme will not be ready by May, admits Deputy Finance Minister Julphan Amornvivat on Wednesday. Julphan said a meeting yesterday had to be deferred as the National Anti-Corruption Commission is sending its objection letter, adding meanwhile the Council of State has decided to neither support nor oppose the flagship policy promise of the ruling Pheu Thai Party. He urges people to understand that many needy people will benefit from this half a trillion baht scheme and that the government isn't being stubborn. Khaosod English on FB Seems like this one is dead, but no one has told the corpse yet. Both the Council of State and the NACC have weighed in with the NACC objecting and the CoS neither approving nor rejecting. Someone, like Srettha, is going to have to stick his neck out if he wants this. Even then it's easy to envision the courts issuing a hold, pending a new PM. Then Srettha can be blamed and replaced with Thaksin's choice, which is lately rumored to be Anutin.

Well, that certainly clears everything up. Seems like they are leaning toward liberal interpretations of valid medical conditions. Some medical-only States in the U.S. have limited qualifying medical conditions. In Florida, for example: Qualifying Medical Conditions: Cancer Epilepsy Glaucoma HIV/AIDS Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) Crohn’s disease Parkinson’s disease Multiple sclerosis (MS) Medical conditions of the same kind or class as or comparable to the others listed. A terminal condition diagnosed by a physician other than the qualified physician issuing the physician certification. Chronic nonmalignant pain caused by a qualifying medical condition or that originates from a qualifying medical condition and persists beyond the usual course of that qualifying medical condition. Currently, in Thailand the following are qualifying medical conditions for medical cannabis: Medical cannabis benefits for six conditions include: neuropathic pain, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, intractable epilepsy, spasticity from multiple sclerosis, AIDS-related cachexia, and palliative care conditions

Thai air force to battle surging fine dust pollution crisis
bamnutsak replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Face-palm. from the linked article... In response to the pollution crisis, ACM Phanpakdee stated that the RTAF is utilising every available resource, including water-dumping aircraft, to combat the haze. The RTAF also partners with different agencies and the Second Army Region to minimise forest fires and subsequent pollution. Basler BT-67 In the current fiscal year, the RTAF plans to deploy a Basler BT-67, a utility aircraft with significant service life, for fire prevention and water-drop operations, said ACM Phanpakdee. This aircraft is a retro-fitted DC-3. "Countermeasures"?
