I guess it's me but I don't understand why every one wants to get married, quickly or not. It's 2019 guys.

Lucky me - neither my lady or myself have any interest in getting married.
We're both divorced and don't want to ruin a perfectly good relationship.

I have made provision for her in my will and that covers off the only concern both of us have. She is the best thing that's ever happened to me.

    um, visa.......

I was bored one Sunday in 2015 afternoon in the UK, and went on Thai friendly. Met many gold diggers (as expected) and one that caught my eye, not a great deal younger than me , 14 years, school teacher, divorced (abusive Thai hi-so husband) , not a great looker, but ok to me (same me I may add). Met her for a month. Got on well, married after 3 weeks in that month. Now live in Thailand together for 4 years and have one daughter. She's a great cook, cleans the house twice a day. Works if we are ever short of cash. She likes same stuff as me, silly stuff like collecting toys and tv like stranger things and LOTR/hobbit (yeah, daft of thai soap also, but give her a little leeway !!). Some will say mad to marry after 3 weeks, but this lady is the most suitable lady I have ever met in my life.

So yes, it does happen sometimes. If you are lucky.

How for the tricky part in years ahead of actually getting her past uk immigration !

My gf and I found each other on ThaiCupid, and we have a similar experience to you.

When we met she was working at a law firn in BKK and I was in Pattaya. So we met a few times for dinners etc and communicated on Line, messenger etc for a few months. I was to fly back to Oz for 6 weeks to finalise the sale of my property and and move my furniture. After 3 days back in home I signed my house over via power of attorney to a friend and flew back to Thailand.

She comes from a middle class family but like your wife her everyday life is about saving money and not wasting needlessly. She works and gives me money towards rent/utilities/food and pulls her weight. She's funny, has the same personality as I do (which is rare cos I'm a lunatic) and my family love her. We've been together over a year now and will be getting married in the new year.

Which scam?? It's just a checkpoint! If you have the required documents, it's just a 1 minute stop, then you get a "thank you" and you are back on your way.

I bet there is more in the story that was is posted in the OP. And don't tell me that he found nobody to translate his ticket at the Pattaya Police Station ! :whistling:

I get an apology as well every now and then

Do a bit more reading on this strategy in other threads on the forum. Sure you might make a few bucks on the money back in Oz, but you have peace of mind letting the money sit in a Thai bank. You only have to have one cock up transferring funds in one month and they can deny your extension of stay. That could be as simple as a wrongly coded transfer. Interest rates are that low in Oz you won't be getting much from any bank. No doubt the share market can give a better return and other schemes even more'. When I think about this I ask myself that as I get older do I want more hassles or less? More risk or less?

If you managed to get 10% return on the 40k dollars that's 4k a year or about 80 bucks a week or roughly 1600 baht. Take of any fees and/ or taxes and it might be say 1200 baht a week. Don't forget to subtract the small interest the Thai deposit is paying you and you might end up 1000 baht a week in front. That's IF you can get 10%. Do the numbers at a more realistic 5% (which is a more realistic number but still non bank with risk).

Is it really worth the hassle for a carton of grog and a couple of packets of smoke a week?

Good luck whichever way you decide to go.

The best I’ve found for transfers is TransferWise and the charge $25 per xfer for equivalent 70000 baht. So there’s another 500thb a month
By your rough calcs that’s back to under 1000 a week

Plus the added risk of a cock up over the 800K in the bank method

Yes riding slower is generally safer. I have to admit that after upgrading from a 650 to a 900cc bike I sometimes finding myself going way too fast and I force myself into slowing down.

If you want to ride fast, you have to pick your places carefully, no side sois, good view of the traffic ahead. Instead of riding super fast, I instead enjoy the superior acceleration that a big bike has.

Regarding tinted windows, we have it on the truck because my wife feel safer when she drives it alone, which she does 6 months per year when I am overseas working.

Safer? Just tell her to just lock the doors

When we are given huge cost numbers attributed to farang deadbeats, please lets look at actual costs, not huge profit margins. Yes, the cost of medicines paid by the hospital, and disposables, such as panty liners, plus wear and tear on equipment, etc. can be put in the real cost column. But don't add a huge doctor's fee, simply because he checked your pulse during his eight-hour shift. Certainly hospitals deserve to be reimbursed for costs -- just make sure, however, these are costs that, unpaid, would affect their bottom line. But don't scream "deadbeat farang" when the majority of the "cost" is padding that could be relegated to the "mandatory pro bono" column in the cost accounting ledger.

Yes, there's a problem; but it ain't as big as advertised!

While I understand your point of view the bill forwarded to the patient is the bill, like it or not. Actual costs never come into the equation unfortunately.
If you owe 200K you owe 200K. I don’t see a way around it

I agree with your comments re health insurance industry will benefit most, poor insurance for high fees.

Maybe that good idea 50k to 100k in trust account totally locked till leaving country.

What about dome of policies with excesses that amount also needs to be available to pay, unlikely insurance will settle a claim if excess not paid.

It already know fact majority of debts left are tourists and neighbouring country visitors not people on retirement and marriage visas.

    ????????????

Oh my. Imagine the stink from those that 'Don't trust thai banks' at having to put 100K in a locked account

Which "back home" service do you use, and what does it cost?

I m from Oz so I use a Telstra pre-paid sim. I top it up twice a year for $10 when it informs me via email & text they’ll disconnect the number if no further action is taken. All incoming texts are free.
I changed from a post paid account and kept the same number I have had for over 15 years.
It has worked flawlessly for 2 years now on my bank account and my share account.

    i am from the USA.

I have a T-Mobile SIM card. T-Mobile roams on AIS here  in Thailand.

I went with T-Mobile because of super cheap rates of $3 a month for prepaid account.

It is imperative to keep a REAL USA cellphone number. Not a google number or virtual numbers.

and I keep the SIM card and phone locked in a safe so I don't lose it.

    Good luck.

I have an iPhone XS Max with an e-sim from True and a physical sim from back home. No swapping around or losing the sim and I get OTP’s instantly on my phone. Very handy

  10. Self insuring expecting a 40-50K bill. I went through 30K on my Kor Ror Bro just having my lacerated finger cleaned and rebandaged daily over a couple of weeks. I also spent just over 6 days in a ward on an IV with antibiotics, no specialist care just vitals checks twice a day, with pneumonia. That bill? Just shy of 200K.
So many say they’ll self insure but unless you have 3-5mil sitting in a seperate account you are most definitely covered for ‘disaster’ IMO
