  1. Another thing that a lot complain about is the bureaucracy and the problems encountered when trying to sort visa extensions, work permits and stuff...

The same people have probably never had to deal with government offices to get permission to stay or permits to work in their own country.

Most English men have no idea about visas and the like...

Any dealings with government offices in the UK and you suffer the same ignorance and lack of care. The same apparent stupidity and lack of logic. The same good cop, bad cop antics.

But if you worked for a good company all your life, you would never know.

  2. i always feel better once i have let it go in a ranting tirade.much like Hitler and chewing the edge of the carpet is great therapy,as is standing on the edge of a cliff,or even clearing out the freezer, and spending a night in it,the key is do not let it affect you mentally.

Roflmfao! If my missus finds me in the freezer, chewing carpet and ranting like Hitler, I'm gonna have a hard time convincing her that I'm not effected mentally... ?

  3. The driving in thailand is pretty good compared to the driving I'm used to now here in Saudi.

I learnt fast here, if you don't adapt and learnt to drive their way, you end up getting in the way.

If everyone drives the wrong way down the wrong side of a duel carriage way. You have to learn to adapt and change your way, because if you stand firm, and go the right way into the flow of people coming the wrong way, you have a Headon collision that you caused because you were adamant that you were right.

And Idiots on phones is a world wide epidemic.

  4. Why should anyone "give allowances" to anyone because of their laziness to educate themself?

Education for most thais is from experience of life, necessity, and hard work, trying to feed their family, forraging and making money from nothing. You think they are lazy because they don't sit on their <deleted> reading books on how to drive politely?

  5. Back in March I was in Thailand on Visa exempt.

I tried to open a bank account in pattaya, but every branch of every bank said I needed a certificate of residence. I didn't even enquire about residency certificates because I was on visa exempt and so assumed I wasn't eligible.

The following week I managed to open an account with bangkok bank in Det Udom. After a couple of days discussions with head office, they allowed me to take a guarantor from the village and my wife's tabien baan instead of residency certificate.

Next day I saw the new Yamaha R3 at the local dealer. They assured me that I could buy and register it in my name just with my passport and the wife's tabien ban... I bought one... Very nice.

A few weeks after I came back to Saudi, my wife's parents got a letter from whoever does the vehicle registrations, refusing registration in my name, saying I need a residency certificate...

So my question is how do I get one and what do I need?

I am planning on moving to Thailand in 1 month time on single non-im O visa. Plan is to live with the in-laws at first.

  6. Is there a reliable list anywhere for import tax and restrictions?

how reliable are couriers and postal service?

Living here in Saudi there's a company here that ship for a good price, but ocaisionally things get damaged, get lost or they refuse to ship after receiving. Returning anything is not worth even thinking about, so I'm already used to the potentially high cost, but sometimes needs must.

  7. Calling someone a foreigner is a pretty board generalisation about anyone not thai. It's hardly the same as attacking someone for being of a specific race.

As with the majority of the worlds population. Thai people have no real concept of racism so she would not get your point when you try to give here a taste of her own medicine... she would just see a stereotypicaly mentally unstable falang which is kinda reinforcing her view

  8. Think having a falang dad would mean she is very likely to have dealings with the west later in life. And knowing western thinking, it wouldn't help her being called Porn...

my lawyer was called Siriporn, pronounced Silly Porn... which I must admit made me chuckle at first meeting

  9. I used to think I needed real books. Ebooks just aren't the same...

Install kindle app on a mobile with a screen size of iPhone or bigger and it's very readable.

You can carry your whole library in your pocket and read it at any time or place.

You can read it in the dark. Set the paper colour black with white ink works great.

You can buy and read books almost instantly.

OK I can't share my ebooks. But I can't easily share the books I have boxed in my dad's loft back in the UK! :0)

  10. i think part of the problem is that many farangs find themselves in isolation. Their wife being the only english speaker in the village and they often pretend to understand just to keep the peace... so forums like this are the only place to vent frustrations...

I think another part of the problem is that we take a lot for granted in our own countries.

We have seen a steady inflation of costs and a steady decline in almost everything else... and what we don't appreciate is that although we have seen a decline in our own countries, they are still a long way off what we get in a developing country.

We leave the home country to get more for our money. But we never really get more for our money. We get a different balance for our money. Some things good and some things bad.

In a developing country everything is a challenge. Everything.

    It's about survival.

Should the government put the welfare of it's poverty stricken nationals before the welfare of a wealthy foreigner. Of course it should.

If the balance of benefits no longer outweighs the balance of annoyances, then it's time to move on, but that is a very hard decision to make.

Another problem is that you have a lot of time to sit around thinking and festering

  11. Thanks guys.

All things considered. I think getting a single Non O based on marriage from Riyadh followed by 1 year extension would be my cheapest option.

Possible stumbling block is Looking on their website, they mention I need to show them a return ticket and an exit re-entry visa for Saudi....

I won't have either... lol I'll give em a ring see what they say.

Failing that I'll come visa exempt and then pop to Savanakhet for a single entry.

With regards to the airline not letting me board, I flew 1-way from Saudi to Bangkok last year no problem so hopefully I'll be OK this time. I'll use same airline.

    Thanks again guys!

  12. Is there a minimum length of time that I would need to stay in Laos? Can I go for a coffee and come back or do I need to stay a night or two?

It sounds fun to do... but I think it'll be a pain in reality...

Could I get single entry based on marriage from Savanakhet and then get a one year extention of that? Thus avoiding the border runs?

Is it possible that no proof of funds needed in Riyadh also? If I applied and was refused would it cause me a problem later?

Last thought, do I need copy of wife's house book?
