  1. I don't know how this fits in...but here is my current situation.

I got hired through an agency about 2 months ago to teach in a public high school in BKK.

I already was holding a non-b visa which I had for a long time just to make my stay here easier.

I have a Bachelors Degree and a 120 hour TESOL certification.

The agency has had no end of trouble applying for my teacher's license at the education ministry (havent even started the WP process yet).

First, the education ministry didnt like my TESOL certificate (because I had done the TESOL course inside Thailand). So the TESOL school had to go back to the accrediting institution (in USA) and ask them to issue a new certificate with their name only (removing all references to the course taking place inside Thailand).

The second visit to the education ministry yielded a laundry list of new problems. They doubt my bachelors degree. Demand to see the original diploma. My transcripts also. They want copies of my entire passport (all pages). And they didnt like the photo I submitted (I had my photo taken in one of the King's knit polo shirts) and so I have to get new photo wearing a long sleeve dress shirt and tie.

So far the agency has been going to the ministry themselves. But now that they want to see the original diploma, I insist on going with them (I'm not letting that document out of my sight!).

I asked the agency why this is so hard. They have many teachers and I think many less qualified than me. They are as baffled about this as I am.

  2. hi,

my thai boyfriend hasnt been to a dentist in (guessing) years. now says he thinks he has cavity and wants to go.

i've have gone to Baumungrad but my experience has been okay but not great. plus expensive and wait for appointment.

can someone recommend a dental clinic that...

    1) located in Victory Monument (secondary choices would be Siam Square or Silom)

    2) be good for someone who hasnt gone to dentist much (dont need Dr Hatchet-job to scare him into not going back for 5 years)

    3) can do the full checkup (xrays etc). need to find out all that needs to be done.

    4) won't freak or be skittish that farang boy(me) will be with him... want to know what the treatment plan is..etc.

i saw one clinic in Silom. On the west side of Silom Road, almost across from California Fitness...ground floor, all glass front windows, very modern looking and new... I have to go back and get the name, maybe its good, maybe not?

    any help appreciated.

    thanks

  3. OK...

I have been to Tawan Daeng... and Isaan Tuk Ter (pinklao).

I have also been to Darling 16 (on Petchburi road near soi thonglor).

But I am looking for a new place.

Specifically, I have friends who like morlam, but find Tawan Daen and Isaan Tuk Ter "too crowded/busy".

I am looking for a smaller place, but that is still busy enough to be "sanuk".

I had heard once (from a taxi driver) there was a club near Soi 45 or 50 off of Charoenkrung... but he couldnt remember the specific soi. drat.

    any ideas would be great!

    thanks!

  4. in my experience, the best way to find whey protein... is to go to a small non-chain gym. often the guys that go there, once they know you, can hook you up with legitimate imported products at prices far less than what GNC will rip you off for.

for example, i typically get Optimum Nutrition (import from USA)...10 pound size for about 4000 baht.

  5. I've looked at TOPS (silom complex) and the grocery store in Paragon for cottage cheese.

Both places only have the same one brand. A small yellow container the size of an individual yogurt container.

And there is virtually no nutritional information on the container about fat or protein content.

The size or the brand isn't important to me... but its for a recipe so its important that the product say its nutrition content (ie fat, protein).

    Thanks

  6. Ok I will look for essential oils of ginger or plai...and add those to a basic massage oil.

I dont know about/where Lemongrass House is, but I'd be happy to try it and be biased also ;-) so, where is it?

as for the purpose... nothing sinister or x-rated. my partner is a body builder .... and I'd like to give a massage for the sensual aspects... but also if can get some effects for sore muscles, thats added plus.... thats my thinking anyway.

Ginger will give a very deep warmth, as will Plai - Lavender will also give off a warm feeling when used for massage, whats the purpose?

Lemongrass House have the best massage oils IMO, but I'm biased.

  7. where is a good place to buy massage oil?

specifically, I'd like to find an oil that gives the feeling of heat and/or tingling when its massaged into the skin.

not sure what herbs or essential oils to look for that have these qualities.

    thanks

  8. check out this place.

    its called EMAC.

their website claims to have English, but I cant get the english pages to work.

sorry. anyway, i go here for some of the classes. i dont use the gym, but it looks nice.

the place is quaint and the people friendly.

here is their map to the place. if you cant read thai, it shows the place down a small soi/alley

next to Menorah Hotel on Suriwong. emac is in the red colord building, on the 3rd floor.

  10. well i live near MBK. but i can go anywhere within reason.

i'd be glad to try Marty's. where is it? Asoke/nana is big area.

i do not have a fixed idea about what i want. so i am looking for a tailor who can suggest some ideas. perhaps has some samples.... that sort of thing.

  11. hi

i bought some silk fabric at a market upcountry and had a traditional long skirt made for my mother. (as in พาถง or พาสิ่น )

there was some extra material left over, enough to make a blouse for her.

can anyone suggest a place in BKK that i can take the fabric and measurements to get a blouse (thai style) made?

    thanks much

  13. I hope this is the right place for this post.

Can anyone recommend a school in BKK for learning Japanese?

Something along the lines of a private language school.

I have studied Japanese before (outside Thailand)...between that knowledge and what I know of Thai, the class's "backup" language does not need to be English. The class can be all Japanese, or Japanese (with backup language of Thai).

    Thanks much in advance.

  14. I've studied other languages (eg French) and often those language schools have special workshops or classes specifically for improving pronunciation.

However, I have yet to find something like this for Thai language at a school here in Bangkok.

I've talked to thai language teachers about this and they usually just say "oh just listen to the people around you and try to immitate them".... or something else about as equally impractical (impractical because listening to people around you is unstructured and chaotic... as far as vocabulary, style, and regional accent differences).

So...anyone know a school here in Bangkok that offers a specific syllabus for improving thai pronunciation?

    thanks much

  15. well i met the school.

i think they liked me as they want me to meet the director on monday.

in person, the story is ....

teach 14 periods of computer. mostly how-to with software. like how to use MS-Word, basics of Windows, stuff like that. these are all english versions of the software.

in addition, supplement the computer teaching by teaching a few periods of english to make a standard fulltime schedule for a teacher.

the school is convenient for me (near Saphan Taksin BTS)...

they handle all paperwork. its salary not hourly. four semesters per year with two week break paid between semesters. includes health insurance and so forth.
