''One of my wifes accs'' - how many do you have?. reminds me of the ''Eats Shoots and Leaves'' joke. ....Priceless

  2. not sure if i am off-topic: I want to buy stuff at Amazon.UK. For delivery to (a) Thailand and (b) to the UK.  My Canadian Visa card is not accepted by Amazon.UK. If I obtain a Visa card from my Thai bank, will that be accepted by Amazon?

I guess what I am asking is, which country's bank Visa card is accepted by Amazon.UK. ?

You get money order from the post office a per this from the mailing service page I posted a link to.

Thanks, Joe. Translator got the paper submitted yesterday. I will keep your links. I have a feeling they will require a new one each year.  can you refer me to a thread where I can ask if a photcopies of 3 months passbook is needed, in addition to the certified printout by the bank? Thanks.

  4. Update: I downloaded the Application Form. Seems a bit of an odd format: heading reads: ''APPLICATION FOR LEG'' . Other than that, I will fill it in,  and once I have my new Visa extenestion stamp and the translation, I will post it using EMS.

The fee for express service is 400 baht.

Any idea how I should pay the 400 baht. Cashiers cheque ? or could I trust cash, as I will miss the EMS deadline for the weekend.

Man, this is going to be awfully tight - If my wife gets only a 7 days extension. from tomorrow (9th)

I suggest you get the translation form the service and do the certification yourself if possible.

Flow chart of procedure is here. http://www.consular.go.th/main/th/services/6441/71860-ขั้นตอนการรับรองนิติกรณ์เอกสาร---Legalization-Proc.html

It can even be mailed in.

I have heard of people being told before they need 15 days remaining on their permit to stay but I have found nothing written to support that statement.

Brilliant: I am following  your advice, Joe; asked the translator to stamp, date and colour scan a copy back to me. Then I will follow the flow chart.

We will ask IO for a 7 day extension for my wife tomorrow. This should allow me to submit my newly extended Visa, togethr with the application form you described.

  6. 3 weeks ago, I heard (first time) that our local IO requires a newly certified translation of my marriage certificate, for my wife to ''piggyback'' on.my Visa.

Both our Visas expires Feb. 11, 2018,

I submitted Marriage Cert to Canadian Consular Services, in order to get a new stamp certifying that it was a true copy.

Having received it back (in record time, thanks Canadian Embassy); I sent it off to a Bangkok translation service I was recommend to. They have delayed, to the point where they now tell me that they cannot submit their translation for approval by the Dept of Foreign Affairs, because my Visa does not have 15 days remaining on it.

There must be some option for an extension, but I 'd appreciate having a clear understanding of my options, before going to IO tomorrow (Feb 9). This is incredibly upsetting for my wife,  who suffers severely from anxiety attacks since being caught in the tsunami.

As best as I know (20 years living here) I should be able to get my Visa extended. Thet question is,what will they do about my wife?

Thanks very much for every bit of help.

  7. I am having a somewhat similar problem. I just had my Marriage Certificate certified by the Canadian Consular Services.

Now I need the Certificate translated and then have the MFA certify it.

I am being hung up by the service a friend recommended, as they are too busy to answer my email and to give me a price quotation.

Can anyone recommend a translation service near/at the MFA building (other than BHI Media) ?

    Thanks

Most banks already have a "form letter" on file that they just have to load, update with the appropriate details and print. I'd expect that most people would do this at their local branch as you would (normally) be doing your extension at the "local" Immigration office so I'm not sure why you'd go to a different branch of your bank to get the letter but as long as you have your bank book and passport it shouldn't be a problem.

2 things (or more) to note. I've seen a person get sent away (at Immigration) because his letter from the bank was over a week old. They told him no more than 2 days old (but that could be just an IO thing that happened at just that one place). I usually get my letter the day before I plan on going in.

Secondly, make sure you update your bank book either the day you go in or the day before (usually I do it at the same time as I get the bank letter). Last summer the guy ahead of me was sent away by the IO because his bank book showed he'd deposited the correct amount 3 months earlier, but he hadn't updated the book since then. I think the IO was a little suspicious about that and it took her a couple minutes to finally get through to the guy that she wasn't going to process his paperwork until he got that book updated. She finally said something to the guy's Thai wife who then convinced the guy to gather up his paperwork and leave.

Also, from my personal experience, there is zero problem with sticking the money in an account and leaving it there with no transactions at all for a year. Every year I've had to renew the Fixed Term deposit I use for my "extension money". I made sure I renewed it 4+ months in advance of my next extension due date and the only transaction that appears in the bank book is the initial deposit and the balance update (done the same day as the bank letter was issued).
My bank (Bangkok Bank) recently offered a yearly Fixed Term account that automatically renews so I don't have to do the whole BS of opening a new account, transferring the money from the old "fixed term" into the new "fixed term" and getting a new bank book. (I have an album full of old bank books that have 3 transactions in them. The deposit, an update and a transfer. Never could figure out why they had to start a new account each and every time instead of just renewing it.)
Any ways, that should make one small detail a bit easier as I won't have to worry about making sure I renew the term 3+ months in advance every year. Just update the bank book the day before my Extension due date (and get the bank letter of course).
(Yeah yeah, I know all you super rich money traders and market players can think of better things to do with 800k than leave it in a low interest term account in Thailand. Good for you. I could care less and prefer to have the peace of mind of knowing that not only is the cash there, but if I suddenly needed it for some reason it is instantly accessible.)

(Note: The above is all in relation to the Jomtien Immigration office and as we know, results may vary based on location, IOs and other factors).

Lastly - any time you go to Immigration for any reason, make sure you ********** take a shower that morning and wear clean, proper clothing. I swear there are people who go there that haven't bathed/showered in 3-4 days (if you've been in the military and been out "in the field" for a few days, you know what people smell like that haven't bathed/showered for that long), wearing the same clothes they had on at the bar the night before, thinking that Immigration is the same as the local 7-11 or beer bar.

As berybert noted, many people are the main cause of their own problems.

This many sound silly....but this is my suggestion, based on  12 years experience visiting a small IO in my province. If you are in an out-of-the-way province: I recommend that you go visit the office, 4 months ahead of your extension date. Ask for a list ( or write down what the officer tells you he will want). For us, most years , the same fellow thinks up new requirements, because he like to screw with your brain. For us, it has never been as straightforward  as Ubonjoe lists; (i.e. copies of passport, photos, lease or letter of residence proof of 800k baht for 3 months). just a few examles of 'extras': photo inside house with guarantor; photo outside of house with guarantor, plus holding a sign showing the house address; google map, identifying coordinates; signed ID card of guarantor; signed copy of guarantor's Tambien baan; 3 months stamped certified bank statements; a 3 month term deposit can be rejected if it includes the month of February because'' that is a small month'';  if your bank statements do not show regular sources of income being credited, they will want want an explanation/proof of what you live on. I could go on .... Wife and I immigrated and have lived here 20 years, love the rural folk. But one of the things we have learned to live with, is the racism practiced at Immigration. It is time the whole Department should be dragged into the 21st century - or at least, Immigration should have a list of requirements carved in stone, preferably by a Thai version of Moses. :).

My funds from home were delayed and as I was in the middle of making a purchase I withdrew funds from my account which left it thirteen thousand baht short of the 800K minimum for one day as the transfer took place. When I went to complete my Retirement visa she actually smiled when she pointed out on my balance sheet that I was Under the 800 for a day. So we had to start all over again....

Thanks.  I did see the banner for being a Microsoft official retailer, but wasn't sure if that would prevent grey-market goods from being sold anyway.

I have the Surface 3 with an Atom processor and eMMC storage, and it is way too slow for me.  The Chuwi also has a slow processor and eMMC storage.  I like the build and features of the Surface, just need to get one with an i5 processor and a SSD.

Hey, great info. here. i love my Surface fan. but - my screen started to de-laminate at the bottom of the monitor (where it links to the keyboard. it has gotten pretty hot, occasionally, when in sleep mode. or maybe i just shut the cover. = can't remember the circumstances. now, the question is - can i get it repaired and if so where ? I split my time between Surathani a & Phuket.  but i guess an official service centre would be in Bangkok? Surface Pro 4 (2015). M3 6Y30 processor (which may be the source of the overheating?)  thanks....

  13. not sure how finicky other IO locations are - but when i presented my bank cert for 800k to the IO, together with 3 months statements (they do not accept photo copies of the savings book - they want a  3 months print out certified (stamped) by the bank. Also, they wanted to know where my funds were coming from so that, in their words, ''we want to make sure that you bring in enough money to live on''. I agree with anyone urging caution to newbies, even if it sounds a bit unseasonably snarky.

Thank you both for your replies on this. Two quick questions:

1 - When you go to the Immigration office to apply for the 90 day visa, after entering Thailand on a 30 day exempt visa, I believe the form that needs to be submitted to Immigration is the TM.87?

2 - Is a medical certificate required for a retirement visa either when applying for the initial 90 day non-immigrant visa or later when obtaining the 1 year retirement visa?

    Thanks

Jim, despite all the rules and regulations, please remember one critical fact (mentiond already but worth repeating). The Immigration Officer you deal with every year can ask for just about anything he wishes for, including changing his mind from what he/she told you in the previous year. Examples: on Samui, Immigration wants a medical cert. In Nakohn, Immigration refused a 3 month terms deposit of 800,000 baht on the grounds that one of the months (February) was ''too small''; another IO insisted on an updating of the Embassy's certification of a Canadian couple's marriage certificate (needed to obtain a piggy back visa extension application by the wife). It is not a bad idea to visit the IO you intend to use, and ask if they have a writen list of all the documentation they require. Just saying, after 20 years here.

  15. i need help/advice from a Danish expat. One who gave up his/her passport for a non- EU one (Australia in my case). I was born n Denmark, emmigarted to Australia many years ago. I moved to Thailand a few years ago. My Danish Government pensions are based on my work record in Denmark and Australia. My pensions are paid to my bank in Denmark. I use my children's hone address in Australia for post to and from the government (eg the life certificate). It would be easier if I changed my address to Thailand. Some one in Denmark told me that if I moved here I would lose my qualificatin for my pension, because I hold a non-Danish (Australian) passport. I checked Borden.dk.pensions rules; but they are not clear to me. Very worried, as I lost a year's pension due to the LIfe Certificate never received by the Danish Pension office (appealed not allowed). Thanks to anyone who can help me.

Yes, my wife's cousin has a very good garage in Suratthani. We send both our cars to him and I've always been happy with the work and cost. No, he doesn't give us discount :)

PM me your contact details and I'll see if we can come up with a plan. I take no responsibility for any negative outcome though, as you've already seized your motor.

I need a auto accessory shop in Surat or Don Sak, which will instal car seat covers. Got a  quote for 24k, which seems a bit steep, especially if they were to use cheap fabric. Dream Car (doesn't do this work) also looking for a stone deflector for the car hood. tks.
