  2. Seems to me that one could ask some of the same questions about Chiang Mai. A number of five-star resort-type hotels are being built here. I have a hard time seeing where all the high-rollers are going to come from in order to fill these new places.

Ovenman, you were right. There are at least five 5-star properties opening in the next year or so. My old friend is designing their kitchens. But at least Chiang Mai is a sort of aviation hub for the north and has many direct flights to foreign destinations. Chiang Rai International Airport in name is international but there is no commercial flights to any foreign countries. I do hope the government will make it a real international airport soon at least serving the neighboring countries like China (Yunnan) Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia. Till then we can really expect Chiang Rai's economy to take off and hence brings more benefits to the hotel industry. I wondered why AirAsia has not thought of using Chiang Rai airport as their northern hub as it is ideal for them to operate flights to Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Kumming, Hanoi and many other heritage cities.

The road from Chiang Rai to Kumming China is about to open. Will mean tourist$$$$$. :o:D

  3. Hum, I think that's just the beginning. Not only do you lose brownie points for causing conflict openly within the workplace, you've hurt his relationship with his mother too. Everything should have been done through her, really... but then for something like this she would have needed a lot of guts. Be prepared for the consequences and good luck!

Forget about face and all that b/s.What took you so long.If I don't like someone out they go.Been there done that. :o:D:D

yes, in retrospect I should have nipped it in the bud a lot sooner. But you know, the wife's kid yada, yada, yada.

I certainly won't make that mistake again.

I wonder when you will hire him back? Please inform us. :D:D:D

  4. Tobacco causes deaths: 142 Thais die daily from smoking

BANGKOK: -- At least 52,000 Thai people die annually from smoking-related diseases in Thailand--or 142 persons every day, according to Thailand's Action on Smoking and Health Foundation(ASH).

The foundation on Wednesday reported that about 5 million smokers worldwide die every year--or 13,700 daily.

It quoted the World Health Organization as warning that the number of deaths from smoking-related illnesses around the globe will grow to 10 million annually, or 27,000 a day, or 20 deaths per minute during the next 25 years, higher than the combined death toll from AIDS, tuberculosis, highway accidents, suicide and childbirth.

The foundation also said that medical research claims that the majority of smokers who began smoking during their teenage years would die, on average, 22 years prematurely.

Holy Cow George! That sounds a bit on the unreal side. I wonder how that would compare to the number of daily road fatalities?

Of all of my Thai friends (there are many), I only know one Thai man who doesn't smoke. I see very young kids lighting up all the time too. It can't be from a lack of education as the government, in my opinion, is putting out plenty of info. Perhaps it's some sort of peer pressure or something.

At this rate, Thailand should hit ZPG very soon... but what a nasty way to go. :D

I don't smoke but they try to blame everything on smoking.I would think the Bangkok smog is as bad as smoking.we are all going to die so big deal! :o:D:D

  5. I have never been to an orthopedic doctor. In the West I used chiropractors. Do orthopedic doctors use physical therapy too or are they just into surgery to correct back problems?

chiropractors couldn'make it through med school :o:D:D

  6. If they are wrong about the dates, I would guess that these bodies were hidden after the May 1992 unrest in Bangkok. Lots of eye witnesses said many more people were killed during that incident than the Government ever admitted.

    Where are THOSE bodies? :D

You have to be a fool to mess with the Thai Gov.The Muslims (thick headed) are learning the hard way.Cheers to the Thai's. :o:D

  7. I have some cash invested in the UK in a bank at 4.75%. I'm not particularly bothered about making any money with it, its just there in case of emergency really. However, with all the talk of inflation, I'm just worried about its value in real terms being eroded. Is there a better way to invest this money to beat inflation or should taking advantage of the best interest rates available take care of it? I dont really want to invest in anything too risky. Asking too much?

    U.S. treasury I bonds. :o:D

  8. I think it is crap. Overly melodramatic to try and hold viewers attention, and the contestants come across in the most part as self obsessed narcissists.

The again, I think that 99% of television is utter garbage so my low opinion of TA pretty much applies to almost everything on the box.

Just proves they are starving for entertainment in the states. If they had a Nana Plaza they wouldn't

have to watch that crapola. :D:o:D

  10. Why not have a SENIOR topic?

We oldies can share our experiences and have a laugh about the "stupid" things the youngsters are doing and saying :D

Btw I am 63 and retired (in Thailand) since december 2004.

All well prepaired and taken care off.

Wondering many times how people can retire with 40-50 years? And I not mean mentally but financially. :D

I retired at 46 and never looked back.Party time!!!!!!!!!! :o:D:D

  11. Living longer means making decisions about what to do with that retirement chunk of life. It’s not your father’s retirement anymore! Retirement, by “old” definition, means to withdraw and retreat So whether you are already retired, or just starting to plan for retirement, it becomes obvious many of us have completely reinvented the concept of retirement. I think today retirees are doing more planning than just looking at their financial assessments. Many of us, facing potentially more than twenty years of retirement, seem to be putting a good deal of time into deciding just how we want to spend our retirement.

So just curious ….What is your definition of “Retirement”?……and for those who are already retired, How do you spend your retirement time?

For me “Retirement” is about finally having time to take care myself better so I can be healthier and better able to enjoy my later years and thrusting myself happily into activities that will fulfill my lifelong dreams or looking for new adventures that will further my knowledges and opportunities

    I retired in 89.I have the time,money and health(with insurance) to do anything I want.That's what I do,anything I want. :o:D:D:D:D

  12. Has nobody got anything more profound and intelligent to say on this subject than lame jokes? The rate of execution in Thailand is one of the highest in the world - often after a speedy (unfair?) trial and disproportionally administered to the poor and powerless?

How does this fit in with the Buddhist precept of not taking the life of living beings!

Is there any kind of capital punishment abolishionist pressure group in Thailand?

Life isn't fair criminals die. :o:D:D

  13. What is your opinion concerning the use of Linux vs. Windows? Everytime I check into an internet cafe, they are running Windows, which as you know costs a fortune per copy (if business is legit!), and is vulnerable to viruses and who knows what else.

Would it be conceivable to set up an internet cafe business running Linux-only PCs. Or is there some functionality that Windows can perform that Linux cannot?

Because windows is the best!!!!!!!! :o:D:D

  14. From todays Daily Mail:

If you hate the boss, feel bored and frustrated at work and want a new start but daren't try to find one,you are not alone.

You are suffering from middlescent - a malaise similar to adolescence except that it affects grown ups.

Researchers in the U.S. have given the name to the negative feelings which descend on millions of workers aged from 35 to 54.

Rather like being a teenager, being a middlescent is a frustrating, confusing and exasperating experience. They find themselves leaving work feeling 'burned out, bottlenecked and bored'.

They are also likely to ask themselves questions such as;Have I achieved in life what I expected to achieve?.

One in five is looking for an escape route - but 85% know a career change is difficult if not impossible at their age.

Experts say there is no shortage of middlescents in Britain.

The report suggests a sabbatical can help staff break the routine and rejuvenate.

Sounds like some of us..... Escape route Thailand? I was lucky. My job came to an end when I was 52, big payout and straight on my pension. The wife wanted out after 30 years so everthing came together for a major life change.Amazing how middlescence faded away.

Are you in middlescent? Are you looking for an escape route or have you found one?.

    At 46 I beat the system,told them I was stressed out.Got a big pension.They wouldn't let me keep my gun.Big deal!$$$$$ million Dollar + pension --no taxes.PARTY TIME!!!! :o:D:D

  15. I have 2 US credit cards, a Visa and a MasterCard.

I have always used Visa in Thailand and know it is very widely accepted. However, I want to cancel one of my cards, and the Visa has an annual fee, the MC doesn't, so the MC is a better deal.

Any comments on experiences with MasterCard acceptance in Thailand? Is it as I suspect much less widely accepted in Thailand, or not?

Call the company with a fee and tell them if they don't cancel the fee you will drop them.I did to mine and they dropped the fee. :o:D:D

  16. Their cousins, orang-utans, haven't faired any better in Thailand :D :

    3 more orang-utans reported dead

Three more orang-utans smuggled from Indonesia to a Bangkok zoo were reported yesterday to have died.

The animals, part of a group of about 50 due to be sent back to Borneo shortly, have been held at a research centre in Ratchaburi.

  17. Dr.adam...yep, it would be naive to believe the best doctors for evry speciality works out of Bumrungrad..

as you say, through the medical profession you have heard of many higher quality specialists working out of other hospitals. The point here is that you have heard this "through the medical profession".How does joe public find this out?...well, he can't. He can ask around,hmmm..and it still comes down to someones subjective view...

I think the ordinary punter is probably going to have to take his chance on one of the big hospitals and see how the doctors shape up. As I said, I tried to get as much info as possible before the op and cross-checked it with someone in the UK.

It seemed to stack up. But any operation has some level of risk..whether I had it in Thailand or the UK.

As for the doctors in private practises being able to charge appropriate to their skill....there is something like that happening in Bumrungrad..I haven't got details..but as I understood the set-up, the doctors charge independently of Bumrungrad, though still under their billing system, and Bumrungrad takes a percentage back out of what they charge.

dr.bone... crikey so I've got a 50% chance of getting through the first year..better get some parachuting in quick....

they are amazingly high failure rates that you quote...and within 7 years I'm back to square one? is there anywhere on the web where this is documented? seems bizarre...

i guess anyone who is back to square one by implication had the op done 8 years ago...my understanding is that these ops have improved markedly over the recent times....so I hope your figures were calculated by using statistics from the early roman empire..

another link for those interested is this

    http://www.alphaklinik.com/Slipped-Disc-with-Stenosis.html

its a klinik(?) in germany specialising in this type of surgery..if you follow the links it will actually show you what happens in the op. It was another of the places I considered going. They are willing to do the op with you still conscious..crikey..."pass me the scalpel, will you please, patient"... :o

Chriopractors couldn't make it to medical school--wannabes :D:D:D

  18. I thought I would share my experiences with medical and dental care in Thailand.

I'm back from Thailand almost 5 weeks now. I am one of the millions of self-employed, uninsured Americans. I have been having problems with my hip and lower back and thought that I had a heart attack a few months back. After spending thousands of dollars on tests with local doctors, a friend who lives in Thailand suggested I go there for a complete examination. I had seen the 60 minutes show on Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok and decided to go there for additional opinions on my problems.

It was very impressive. The doctors there were wonderful. The facilities are state of the art and all for a fraction of the medical and dental cost here. I had the comprehensive checkup and a full orthopedic exam. I also ordered and had ala-karte eye and hearing tests, some skin growths removed and tested.

I found that for my age (58) I am in pretty good shape. The main cause of my problems - 20% overweight and not getting enough exercise, and my tall frame (6' 4-1/2") that puts added stress on my back. They discovered a gall stone during the abdominal ultrasound, and they recommended changing my blood pressure medicine, which turned out to be a very good change. I was so impressed with the fact that I was told that I did not need any of the more radical treatments I had considered. I was not pushed into any kind of treatments which was something I thought might happen. I had been thinking of hip and/or back surgery, angiogram etc. The doctors instead suggested diet and lifestyle changes.

After considering my options I elected to have my gall bladder removed there, rather than risk an emergency happening here in the states that would send me to the "poor house". They did a laproscopic surgery. I was in-patient for only 48 hours and then was back out sightseeing and shopping and walking, climbing stairs and all - like nothing had ever happened. $3,400 total... including a beautiful private room with all the amenities. My sister said her laproscopic gall bladder surgery bill to her insurance in Los Angeles was around $30,000... and she ended up having complications after the surgery from having her abdomen inflated causing her lots of pain. My surgery was problem free.

I was treated like a VIP everywhere. It was quite an experience. All the various doctors I saw had studied and or interned in the states and spoke very good English. They spent so much time with me going over all my tests, xrays and all, that I felt they really cared. The technicians all seemed well trained and the nurses and administrators were like a different breed from my experiences here in the US medical establishment.

Dental work just as good. My teeth have been an embarrassment that has bothered me since I was young... small and with large spaces. I have had many bottom molars removed over the years. My friend recommended a clinic in Bangkok and I had my teeth all fixed while I was there as well. They did 4 veneers, 4 crowns, a root canal and a full lower partial. The clinic was not only beautiful http://www.thantakit.com/ but had all state of the art equipment, staffed by some of the most considerate, gentle and caring personnel imaginable. My dentist went to school at New York University, spoke perfect English and really went out of the way for me. All the work came to $2600 total and my teeth now look and feel great.

I spent around $10,000 for everything - including all the medical and dental work I had done, my airfare, 3 weeks hotel, great food, entertainment and lots of shopping. I had a fantastic time. I bought some new custom suits and a bunch of shirts plus bought my wife all kinds of clothing and beautiful fashionable leather goods at a tiny fraction of what they cost here.

My experience at Bumrungrad and the dental clinic were everything I could possibly have hoped for. I was very satisfied.

What was the name of the dental clinic? :o:D:D
