    and be in Ireland illegally!

    Simply not possible.
Do you see anything about a visa in article 6 right of residence for 3 month?

Article 5 right of entry section 2 sentence 3
Member States shall grant such persons every facility to obtain the necessary visas.

How should that working for a entry visa for crossing the border if there is no border post?

  2. EU directive 2004/38 Article 5 section 2 first sentence.

    2. Family members who are not nationals of a Member State shall only be required to have an entry visa in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 539/2001 or, where appropriate, with national law.

If the irish law say no border control at the border to NI they waive a entry visa for family members.
The stay after crossing the border is covered from the eu directive article 6 anyway.

  3. As long as the brexit is not finalised you are still a eu citizen exercising your right of free movement in Ireland. The family member of a eu citizen need only a visa for crossing the border. If there is no border control there is no border control. It is a good idea to have the marriage certificate by hand in such circumstances.

  4. Ask the embassy what they need for a Legalisation of a marriage certificate for the usage in spain. You need it later in Spain anyway.

After you got it apply for a visa. I don't think they can turn down a marriage certificate which they legalised by their own.

I have a camper van sitting in Spain and our intention to tour Europe for extended periods (4 to 6 months) probably every other year

4 to 6 month is not so good. The max you can get from a schengen visa is 90 days in a 180 days period. If the days are used up the visa validity doesn't help.

From what I hear from migration lawyers the Spanish MFA knows better but at embassy level they still apply the rules incorrectly due to Spain still not having bothered to correct the incorrect incooperation of directive 2004/38 into Spanish law.

There is no such clause in spanish law. There is only a instruction from the spanish MFA from 2011. Someone posted the leaflet sometime ago.

  7. EU law has primacy and the right of free movement is not dependent on any registration in the home country.

From the EU visa handbook part III section 3.7 burden of proof, last sentence:

A Member State may require that the relevant documents are translated, notarised or legalised where the original document is drawn up in a language that is not understood by the authorities of the Member State concerned or if there are doubts as to the authenticity of the document.

A ticket out of the country (a return ticket is not a requirement) within 30 days is a requirement in the ministerial order for visa exempt entries.

The airlines are aware it is requirement. It is shown in the IATA's database that has the requirements for entry to Thailand without a visa.

Is there a fine for airlines defined?
If not you can tell the airline you are flying on your own risk and pay a flight out of Thailand by yourself if necessary.
Some airlines have a declaration form for such cases.

What is going to be a challenge will be the fairly open ended Schengen visa that I want my wife to have for France. I have a boat and want to take it to France this summer. With weather and tides it would mean that a dates we asked for would have to fairly flexible.

Mark other in Field 21 at the application form and write family member EU. (Typo in post 6)
    Field 24 mark multi entries.
    Field 25 90 for 90 days
Field 29 the planed arrival date.
Field 30 add 179 days to the arrival date.
